returning to the story. john hendren is outside the mine. >> the latest we have is the separatist government says it appeals there's no foul play involved in the explosion. the donetsk people's rub lake says -- republic says it looks like methane gas may be responsible for the explosion that killed about 30 people we believe so far. we know there were 200 or so underground at the time of the explosion. that means half of the people made it out. one man that came out said he saw at least five dead bodies on the way. this is a shaft that is a kilometre deep. they couldn't go in initially. they had to let the noxious gas

out before it could go in. the search would be ongoing, but it could take time because of the depth of the shaft. >> this mine has a history of accidents, doesn't it? >> particularly bad history, in fact. over 100 people were killed in a gas related blast in 2007. 20 others were killed in another blast in 2002. and in one case criminal charges were brought against the mine. it's part of the world where the standards of safety are not quite what they are in other place, and this mine has been singled out for not meeting the standards that have been set in the area. it's an area where there has been shelling. we are told by the donetsk people's republic that there were none at the time. there was shelling that shut the mine and trapped workers in here. sadly, it appears that that is not the case today.

we will not know anything about the final numbers until the rescue workers finish the work. >> the unrest can't make things any easier, do you know what state the emergency services are in? >> well, they have to go through a number of checkpoints. everyone gets the information checked on the way here. that's part of the problem. another part is supplies are short. if some people who are trapped need medications, they are in short supply here. we talked to doctors from medecins sans frontieres today and they said that they have trouble getting some medications, they have to use different. everything becomes much more difficult when an incident like this happens. the same rescue workers are responding to people injured.
