involved in the air strikes. the saudis say they have only targeted houthis military positions in strategic locations around the country. >> at least four other have joined the campaign. the united arab emirates say they are send fighter jets for this purpose. egypt has also expressed the effort to join the u.s. which is in the middle of nuclear talks has announced support for the action. it's created what the white house called a joint planning with the saudis to coordinate u.s. military and intelligence support. the support of the houthies has triggered fears in saudi arabia and the majority of the nations put it may be trying to spread it's influence. the government has strongly criticized the air strikes. and the houthies say civilians were killed. it is necessary for all action to end as soon as possible and for dialog to resume

toward reaching a solution. we believe that these military actions can only plunge the region further into turmoil and will have no benefit for countries that enter into such actions they have held their president under house arrest until the southern city last month. >> earlier this week, the houthies began to march towards adan in an attempt to remove the president from his last strong hold. it is not clear yet how far the saudis and their allies are going to go there their campaign and whether the air strikes will be followed by a ground invasion. hakeem is the editor and chief of the yemen post, he joins us now live on theline. there have been further coalition air strikes on targets in yemen what more can you tell us about them. >> the attacks started earl
3:05 pm
yes today, yesterday they started at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. the reason why these attacks are happening at night is because yemen did not have the ability to stop these air strikes from starting at night, while during the day they do have the ability. so this shows why the escalation happens in the hours of the day. right now they are doing an interview, i can hear bombings happening by the second. and these attacks are continuing and thatting only specific military targets. as of today there hasn't been an civilian deaths as of right now, i am sorry all the deaths -- are -- >> okay, your signal is breaking up, be you say their attacks are underway right now in saleh? what relation you hear. >> adan is seeing a lot of flashes buzz this is between the houthis militants and the
3:06 pm
promilitants. there's no air strikes right now. mainly not in saleh. these attacked are expected to continue and today the houthis leader gave a speech, warning that if they do not stop these attacks the houthies will not sit quiet even if it means that they will escalate. so right now, they are meeting tomorrow morning and trying to reach a deal or a cease fire between the group of factions to ensure that yemen does not fall. >> can the houthies with stand this saudis andly led intervention? given that they are after all a major fighting force still a minority, and they don't have majority support. >> it is not always whether they can with stand or not, it is whether yemen can with stand as a nation.
3:07 pm
and syria the attacks ensure that bashar al asaad stands the remains but in return, the taj and hundreds of thousands of civilians lost their lives. yemen did not want to make the same mistake as syria and they know they must reach a deal with all the factions or this could be possible with these attacks. because yemenis are not willing to sacrifice more especially after years of tension in the country. >> iran denies that it is given direct support to the hoot byes but do you think that iran will be drawn into this? oh, for sure. yemen if there's no negotiation taking place yemen will be the next proxy war. and reach the new location, and yemen will suffer more than anyone else, the houthiss will also suffer. and now the houthies they will
3:08 pm
fail and lose politically because they will be held responsible for being the reason why no deal was met. and or restart alee generalsy and peace fire deal. >> the u.s. says it is giving the coalition tactical and intelligence support what's the u.s. up to here? on the one hand it is assisting backs militia and the army in the fight against isil in iraq, and now it's backing sunni led coalition against the shia iran backed militia there in yemen. >> it is not a secret that they have capabilities here in yemen. so ensuring that both countries are share intelligent information, can only help sobbed yeah arabia but to what extent will the u.s. help what the u.s. announced is more of a media
3:09 pm
call on the ground of the u.s. air evacuating the forces. and everything the intelligence forces are prosecuted and negotiated by the houthies. months ago so they are issuing is very weak right now, but more of a media campaign rather than on the ground reality. >> bun final question, one way to make up the fact that the president is now in riyadh having been spirited away. how theydy stand behind the war in yemen. and thousand they have not reached a deal, and now inside will be heading to egypt for the air rack summit tomorrow morning but again these two will lead. and saudi arabia will not lose anything, at least for now because the damage and destruction will happen in yemen, be the houthis leader
3:10 pm
has vowed that this war will not -- will go beyond the borders. >> . >> and before i let you go, you can still hear the sounds of those air strikes reverberating around tonight. >> oh yeah, as clear as your voice right now, i have one ear listening to you and the other ear listening to these saturdayly these explosions that are happening right now from both sides. which it's saudi air strikes -- we do expect as the day goes on, as the night goes on, these strikes will only continue. >> good to talk to you many thanks where it a second night of saudi led coalition air strikes is underway.
3:11 pm
why his government has joined the coalition. >> the coalition had to answer the calls and his government. egypt announced the military and the support and is planning to participate in the air and naval strikes. also an infinity attack if it is necessary. >> let's hear now from a retired jordanian general he says that air strikes will just be the beginning of a much wider campaign. >> this campaign, it may have -- i may build for many many steps. the air raids and continues for days or sometimes weeks weeks
3:12 pm
until it acheers targets. w the air raids i think there is a real need to make a sea siege on the sea ports to pri represent any iranian ships which get to the houthies. i think it will be done and used by performed by the official cause to control some critical spots because there is a real need for using this special course. and after that if there is a need to send boots oven the ground, i think we have to make a new estimation to decide there will sent or not in my opinion i think there will not need initially but no one can be sure. whether they will be sent or not. >> a spokes man for the u.s. secretary general say that the security council supports the legitimacy, but says the council has also warned all
3:13 pm
partiesparties to refrain from actions which may undermine the integrity. and he is reminded all parties of their obligations to ensure the protection of civilians and of all humanitarian and united nations associated personnel as well as the rules and principles of international human rights law, and refugee law the jump state department spoke about it's support for -- the threat that they perceive. on their border. to which they are responding. and we are support i of their efforts to address that.
3:14 pm
>> happening now but the houthies are not engaged in. >> to the state department, al jazeera is there so kimberly, what is the actual extent of the u.s.' role in this coalition of ration. >> some of it, of course, we touched on already but it is very clear and this is outlined by statements that in fact, the capacity in which the u.s. is involved is not direct military action, but instead indirect, in termses of intelligence, support, la gist call support communication support, what is it clear is that intelligence helping to supply some of the information in terms of how to target those precise locations where those air strikes are occurring. but kit also tell you too is that there was testimony on capitol hill where a u.s. army general indicated that it was also very important for the united states to support the saudi led effort to make sure there was a free flow of commerce, in that strait.
3:15 pm
the mendes strait, that is another prime concern for the united states we can see that continuing and so that is something that they are also working very closely with their partners to support. >> all right given then the u.s.' role in this operation what and when did it know about it. >> that is the interesting question. and this is where we get some very conflicting statements from the obama administration, on the one hand, we had the state department telling us today that in fact it was very close consultation with it's saudi and g.c.c. allied and counter parts that the secretary of state john kerry had telephone calls with the counter parts and there were discussions taking place about this. and the events that were taking place or were to take place, in very recent days. yet we had contradicting testimony from that very same u.s. army general, lloyd austin who told us in fact that the united states learned about these air strikes from
3:16 pm
saudi arabia, they learned on the day of, and just before they occurred. this called into question, and whether there's deterruation and concerns about trust. >> thank you in washington, our sister station, al jazeera arab big network. reports on these new air strikes these new saudis andly air strikes that are underway, is targeting which is a main houthis strong hold. eyewitnesses say that the air strikes were followed by -- or that the aircraft flying over were followed by loud blasts we will have much more on the breaking news, from yemen in just a few moments here on al jazeera, stay with us.
3:19 pm
hole low, again. this is al jazeera live. there are reports of new saudi led air strikes. they have targeted houthis positions both in aid and in the capitol. meanwhile, yemen's president has arrived in the saudi capitol, saudi state television says that he will travel on toshake in egypt for an arab league summit meeting on saturday turkey says it may provide report more from bernard smith who is on the line from istanbul.
3:20 pm
what it says offering logistical and technical support, bernard what does it mean. >> well, adrian, which was made this comment in response to a question he is given in an interview earlier today. they haven't clarified what that support would be. the only guess really from here at the moment is that it could involve the turkish air force providing support to the saudi air force as it takes part in it's air strikes but that detail oz that what that support would be, of course, we are a lot further away prosecutor the border with yemen. from yemen so further than providing air support it is difficult to say to elaborate on what that might be. >> where does turkey's role in all of this fit into the bee owe politics oif region? as you say it is on the edge of the region, you can hardly
3:21 pm
call it a part of the middle east, even though it is allied with the countries in the middle east. >> of course. turkey is had the war in syria right on it's border for the last four years so it knows the threat that is -- that can be posed by extremists forces as turkey would call them from across the other side. so it appreciates appreciates what it faces. the relationship has been strained because of the saudi backing for the coupe against egyptian president mohamed morrissey, turkey remain as supporter, but in this common cause for the saudis he has been suspicious of iranian actions against isil in iraq, he has said that iran's attempts to fight isil in iraq is an attempt to increase the influence there.
3:22 pm
so he sees iran playing a similar role, and that is why he has come out in support of the saudis on this one. >> turkey will hardly be one with to be dragged into a conflict that may escalate. >> no, it is not turkey already has enough trouble with managing it's own border with syria it has -- it tries to strengthen that border to stop foreign fighters crossing for example it knows the risks already posed by conflict spilling over so it hasn't shown any enthusiasm at all of getting involved in the conflict, in that conflict certainly on it's own and it has tried to manage that border without getting directly involved in what is happening. burr yes in a response though to a question from a journalist in an interview today, he was fully behind
3:23 pm
saudi arare yeah's attempts -- air strikes and said that he could provide logistical support all the though without elaborating on that what that would be. >> has spoken today with u.s. president barack obama about the crisis in yemen and the on going nuclear talks with iran about cooperation in the fight against the islamic state in iraq. and syria imbra him is a political afires analyst. what do you think the u.s. is up to here? as i put it to a short time ago, on one hand it is assisted iran backed militia and the fight against isil in iraq and now here it is backing a saudi coalition in yemen against a shia iran
3:24 pm
backed militia. >> you know, i think the u.s. administration foreign policy is a complete disaster when it comes to the middle east. the use of force to go back to the iraqi invasion, i think this is what created the whole dissaudisner the whole middle east and then the military, it is not helpful, it is only playing into the hands of militias and terrorist groups. this is what is happening we have been telling the u.s. government to basically stop using drones support yemen dend mas hold the forminger president accountable, with developments with education with building a strong institutions and none of that
3:25 pm
was address sod they were basically as you can tell, when you see from the news, about a week ago u.s. counter terrorism weapons that are sent in the past two years for about 500 million disappeared. and that's create add great concern for almost everyone ink colluding the yemen. and so at this point i think that i am sorry on the one hand you have -- the saudi coalition saying that the aim of this operation is to help the people dispose of the houthis threat, but to what extent are we looking here in a proxy war between saudi arabia and iran? saudi arabia and the gulf maying saying keep your nose out of our business. >> look, i think the houthis ma will asia is a threat to
3:26 pm
yet men these before it is a threat to the international community. if you see what they have done in places like outside saleh and they have targeted almost everybody. they blew up houses and mosques against people who basically peacefully opposing them. they gone to places like -- they were headed to the south using force and violence and that's not what the yemen want, it is not what they were looking to do i think the high schoolties militia and -- it is important to note, that when we say the houthis militia part of it is the former brethren, he is a big part of what is going on right now. and so they were committing crimes. they were headed toward the south, and they were imposing their own political agenda, based on using force and violence, it is -- completely clear and the past few days
3:27 pm
the houthies were clearly saying they will invade saudi they will attack, they will attack places and so it is very clear. >>ic bra him. >> they are creating a state to begin with. >> i have to stop you thank you, many thanks in new york. win other story, french investigators have begun to hunt through the wreckage of the flight that crashed into the french alps, it now appears that the coy pilot crashed it deliberately. the other pilot is believed to have been locked out. al jazeera reports. >> a search team and forensic experts make use of the remaining hours of daylight to comb the vast crash site analysis of the black box recovers from the site on tuesday has revealed the plane's final moments. listening to voice recordings from the plane pros it cooers say the pilot was locked out during the flights final

moments. the co-pilot apparently conscious, was at the controls and deliberately put the plane into a steep descent. just before it crashes passengers are heard screaming. >> the most likely interpretation we can make at this point is that the co-pilot deliberately refused to open the cabin door he then activated the button that trigger as severe loss of altitude. we don't know why he activated this button but can be interretted as a deliver rate attempt. >> lit salt lake known, he was a je manage citizen police say he has no terrorist background. they are shocked. >> .

>> the place and situations to enter the court. >> they can open the cockpit door but not they started retrieving body parts a t the flights victims and dna testing is underway. >> they help to speed up the grim process of identifications. >> they were deliberately killed is disstress. this tragedy has been held throughout parliament. to remember the 150 victims and the country's leader later has these words. >> this news effects me the same way as most people, it is

beyond imagination. we don't know the whole background yet, therefore it is important the investigation is conducted. every aspect must be thoroughly investigated. >> the town in western germany was particularly hard hit by the tragedy. 16 children were on the plane. to know their deaths were deliberate, will be even more distressing. at al jazeera. well, a feeling is not a fact. our country is almost unique in people believing that global warming is not a human cause. >> robert kennedy, jr., a lifelong advocate of the environmental movement thanks in part to memories of his dad prior to his father's assassination in 1968. >> my father considered this part of our heritage and our
