houthi fighters among dozens killed in yemen. we'll bring you all the latest on the saudi campaign in just a few minutes. you're watching al jazeera live from london. also coming up with most of the votes counted, nigeria's opposition is claiming victory but the vote could yet go to a second round. with the agreement on ryan's nuclear program just hours away the chances are good
12:01 pm
and a courthouse under siege in turkey while a prosecutor is being held hostage in a highly-charged trial. heavy fighting is continuing across yemen as saudi-led air strikes continue for a sixth day. in the south, nearly two dozen fighters and civilians were killed when coalition jets bombed an army division loyal to former president saleh. eyewitnesses have told al jazeera that cement workers have been killed, injured, and trapped after houthis shelled their factory.
12:02 pm
a great deal of time in yemen. here's a little bit of analysis. we're expecting to hear a briefing from saudi arabia in the next few minutes. given what we've seen so far, six days of air strikes, what are we likely to hear from them? >> basically, two things the intensifying air strikes against houthi and targets and also air bases -- since yesterday,
12:03 pm
saudi-led strikes targeted troop movements in the southern provinces. houthi fighters moving to recapture their city of aden. they're doing their best to prevent that from happening. dislodge from the southern areas because they're still there on the ground and fighting.
12:04 pm
people loyal to him. some of these fighters soldiers loyal to him have been trained by the americans. this is someone even though he was evicted from power in 2011, he still has powerful in yemen. so he uses that loyalty. a lot of houthi fighting is taking place in yemen which is concern to the international community since 2012. and concern of the saudis. they're still able to stage attacks in the southern part of the country and this will continue for quite some time. air strikes are not going to severely undermine the presence of the houthis. they still remain powerful in different parts of the country. >> all right. thank you very much. justin crump is a security
12:05 pm
intelligence consultant. he made some very good points now. the former president saleh maintained soldiers loyal on the ground to him in the south and the houthis are not now able to use that to their advantage. that limits the effectiveness of the air strike >> no one has an appetite for ground war. the saudis and the egyptians -- ground operations are extremely difficult. there are two options. the coalition has two options. something in aden is possible almost as a show of strength. so something to actually put some troops on the ground might help with more precision air
12:06 pm
strikes against particularly tactical targets. providing effective support to ground troops is much harder requiring forward observers reacting very closely with aircraft. >> do you see air strikes intensifying in the coming days and weeks >> >> i think we're actually seeing that today. there's been a pause this afternoon for the first time. more limited opportunities for commercial flights to fly out. obviously a lot of people evacuating the country. there's obviously a lot of pressure now to drive the houthi back from aden. i understand the saudis are claiming to have achieved that at the moment. you have very effective positions around yemen itself. and, again, that's something to do before they think about putting troops in there.
12:07 pm
a lot of effort required. >> given the complex tribal and political alliances you have in yemen and the former president's influence in the country is a big factor in this houthi advance. is that ultimately going to limit -- how far you can go with air strikes >> >> very much so and it's even more complex than that. in 2010 one of the main problems with the southern separatist movement who actually wanted an independent south, the country fought a civil war in 1994 and we're seeing in some ways a repeat of the layout of that situation. so a very strong element in the south. i'm not interested in -- which is one of the options being talked about. they're looking for a six-state federal solution.
12:08 pm
so the immediate crisis i think is focusing effort. i think if the pressure comes off aden things will change more radically as a result of that. >> thank you very much. we're going to stay abreast of any developments with that saudi briefing. i want to get more now on the air strike on monday that hit a camp for displaced people in yemen. now, the u.n. says at least 41 people were injured. it is home to nearly 1,000 familiars. >>reporter: here inside this refugee camp misery was a fact of life in 2009. they fled their homes in the north six years ago for the same reason they have now been caught in the cross fire. a war between the houthis and the government. houthi rebels and saudi arabia are blaming each other. a humanitarian worker says there were many fighters among the
12:09 pm
casualties. >> houthis have moved their weapons and fighters to areas where you have civilians. we do our best to prevent civilian casualties. we reply to a source of fire. >>reporter: doctors without borders says the injuries of the women and children suggest there was an air strike. >> in the camp there are a lot of civilians still. in the camp there are hundreds of women and children and i don't know i could not tell you if there are fighters inside. but for sure most of the people who are there are civilians. >>reporter: the war in the arab world's poorest country is hurting people already suffering. 14.7 million yemenis need humanitarian aid. 10.6 million don't have enough to eat. and only about after of the $596 million in promised humanitarian aid has actually
12:10 pm
been received. the coalition says it's making progress with the air strikes. at least nine provinces including the capital have been hit. coalition forces are also advancing by sea to try to control the ports. witnesses tell al jazeera houthi forces bombed a cement factory killing and injuring dozens of workers. the saudi coalition hopes that with each day they're getting closer to defeating the houthis but they have been fighting for control since 2004 and so far have shown no willingness to join talks to end the violence. the iraqi prime minister says security forces have reached the center of tikrit in their push to retake the city from isil. they are now in control of the government headquarters and the main hospital. shia militia groups are also fighting with the military in
12:11 pm
the latest advance. the briefing on the current saudi military operation campaign. let's just listen to what we're hearing at the moment. >> be in the right position. secondly so we can organize matters according to the military process. all the initiatives, we work on all the initiatives according to the frame we agreed to and according to the organizational procedures. i would like to announce today. yesterday we announced the closure of the airport. now it is operational again. the reason for that was random
12:12 pm
fire now our investigation into these matters -- now the airport is operational. as for the coalition operations we're still following the same operation announced to the state. of course we confirm -- of the forces and surrounding the aden port. as you know -- houthi elements inside the town and they are
12:13 pm
leading to some other -- that's why the coalition forces intensefyied their operations in the last 24 hours. they had planes around aden and the port and have faced all moving forces and now they are flying fresher. operations continue with intensity in -- coalition operations are going and going
12:14 pm
according to propers and all the movement movement. -- procedures and all the movement. all the supplies and logistics. forces following the ousted president saleh are trying to move to aden and are being targeted by the coalition.
12:15 pm
all the positions where they have their antiaircraft defense units and some of them are targets for the second time to prevent them from launching these missiles. supply vehicles are being target targeted. we have to identify them first. we have some popular committees on the ground to monitor these movements. and then we handle the matter.
12:16 pm
notice the vehicles moving the supplies which have been target targeted. also military vehicles in aden. these targets in areas of the northern of aden city it's isolated movements. you would like to remind and connect this issue that there were some people who were there before the operation started.
12:17 pm
and operations started from the popular committees and from outside to the coalition to prevent them from receiving their supplies and logistics. notice that there's some gathering of some militias trying to make some checks on the road. we receive information and then our plane deals with these gatherings at checkpoints.
12:18 pm
vehicle, another vehicle. now as you notice our operations are targeted control all the movements of aden city to confirm that there's no danger on the town at the moment. notice that all these vehicles are military vehicles some civilian vehicles but used for military purposes. some of the buildings where they have civilians left have been targeted. explosion. the operation continues at the same level by
12:19 pm
the saudi military through movement all through the borders. during the naval operations as i mentioned previously the taking their positions to cover all these areas there, sea ports. we're going to give you the english version but we're going to give you an idea now that in
12:20 pm
the coalition we continue chasing the same targets through the area and we continue targeting the ballisticcy missiles and movements. it prevented the logistic supplies to these militias even the ones inside the town. we continue to target their movements. same operations were in the northern part of yemen.
12:21 pm
there was another exit heading towards the saudi border. the locations where the militia controls and the equipment taken from the army to prevent them from losing the army equipment. now they are moving towards -- under pressure. that's why they have to move to these two towns and attempt to enter them. and they will have to try to have safe haven there. but we already destroyed some military vehicles. the coalition welcomes all efforts with regards to help the
12:22 pm
refugees and the people overcome all resistance. but we ask the organizations and the countries that are willing to -- to do that through the diplomatic channels so we can coordinate these efforts along with the military. there will be no errors or any misunderstandings misunderstandings. last night, we declared that the airport was closed for a limited
12:23 pm
time and now it is open operational. there is some random firing. the security forces investigated this matter and now things are back to normal. now i will take questions. was there any reinforcement for soldiers or equipment near the borders of yemen or has equipment been moved there?
12:24 pm
in the area we don't have any movement. we have what's enough to manage anything. the movement between the camps is normal. near the borders, there are no
12:25 pm
extra forces but if we need it we have enough forces in other areas to handle the situation and security. so now everything is gone and we have enough forces now. it has been said that houthis have been training in areas like islands outside yemen. they are training the houthi there is. our operations covers all yemeni republic and its air sprays. the air space of yemen is under control of the coalition.
12:26 pm
we have it all under control and if there's an area that exists outside the yemeni territories, they are going to be outside operations. this will have influence, will it influence the situation if there are -- in the battle outside the battle.
12:27 pm
all right. so just to recap. we've been listening to a spokesman for the saudi-led coalition that's been conducting air strikes in yemen for six days now. we know that they have been
12:28 pm
conducting strikes pretty much across the country including in the north. that was mentioned just now. the military action is continuing with intensity in northern yemen and he specifically mentioned the houthi strong hold in the north. we know that saudi forces and yemeni houthi fighters have exchanged artillery and rocket fire at aborders. that took place on tuesday in really some of the worst clashes we've seen along the border with yemen and saudi arabia. saudi helicopters have also been sighted flying overhead and they describe the fighting in that area as the worst. certainly during the course of the six-day saudi-led military operation in the country. perhaps worth mentioning that we
12:29 pm
heard that the brigadier general was trying to address the issue of civilian casualties and the risk of further civilian casualties in the country and he was arguing there that the houthis have set up positions in civilian areas which meant that coalition war planes effectively conducted air strikes on those areas. let's continue to listen in. >> the houthi militias are under pressure as i mentioned. they moved the battle inside the cities. that's where there will be some victims. that's their main aim if you follow the media. the coalition work precisely, as you saw, with great precision. there was a vehicle which was targeted after we were sure that this is a houthi vehicle.
12:30 pm
now, the air force is in the air attacking. the operations that are happening now are not coming from outside the cities. it is run by the militias that were already in the cities. and work is underway to control the matter.
