rebels to leave the presidential palace a day after they captured it. >> they cannot keep that. they were just on the top of the mountains, and i'm sure they'll be on the run. but now they're besieged. aden is a peninsula and these people are blocked in, the civilians. they're hitting the civilians from the tops of the hills. >> the fight for yemen could be a long one and the number of casualties continue to grow. the u.n. said it is concerned. >> i call on all parties involved it make their obligations under international law. and do their utmost to protect the ordinary women children, and men. reports from humanitarian partners in different parts of the country indicate that some 519 people have been killed. and nearly 1700 injured. >> china has sent one of its naval ships to aden to

12:05 pm
these militias. the outcome of the last few days of fighting, it's efforts are not very clear the results of those efforts. i was down in aden a couple of weeks ago and i talked with those people, they're desperate for quality arms weapons and they're desperate more than anything else for leadership. the man who is supposed to lead this resistence has been captured by the houthies. we know that there are reports that he could be sent back to yemen. so they lack leadership, coordination logistics and under the saudis figure out how they can reach them and give them what they need. it's clear that the houthiesed and saleh loyalists have the
12:06 pm
upper hand in this fight. >> that's one side of what's happening in yemen. the other side is what is happening with the involvement of al-qaeda. we reported yesterday how a prison had been broken in to, and a lot of prisoners freed one of them a senior leader of al-qaeda. tell us what is happening in that region. i understand that a military base may well have been taken over by al-qaeda in that area. >> yes we heard those reports about al-qaeda breaking into a jail and freeing some of their prisoners. but aside from that we don't have more reports about al-qaeda being directly involved in this. we know that there has been a level of coordination between al-qaeda elements or al-qaeda units and in some cases to fight together against the houthies. but in aden itself, we don't see a presence, a visible presence
12:07 pm
of al-qaeda. for the time being the main concern for the houthies and the saleh alliance. they can see on the other side of the coin like al-qaeda, but the main concern is the houthies and asal saleh. >> we'll have more later in the program. we're expecting five or ten minutes from now. we'll be across that. two kenyans and two foreigners have been arrested over the al-shabab attack on garissa university in north of kenya. they named the mastermind of the attack and there is an award for his capture.
12:08 pm
147 people most of them christian students were killed in the attack. many went on friday to help identify the decease. itthe president has been widely criticized for dismissing advice. now we're live from garissa. we'll get on to the scenes and the grief of the relatives in garissa in a moment, if we may but what more of these arrests? >> we heard from security force that four people have been arrested in the port city of ma'am mambassa. we're told they were part of a larger group of attackers who are responsible for this attack at this university in garissa
12:09 pm
and were planning a number of other attacks. this follows the security warning coming from the british and australian governments just over a week ago saying these areas because of these groups. >> what do they know about the man who has a reward out for his capture? >> we don't know what they know about them. they published a picture, of course, we don't know where he is or where they got that information from. but here there has been an extensive cooperation going on today inside the university. they understand that the bodies of the attackers they say there
12:10 pm
were four. they remained in there for a long time. just a few hours ago they saw armored diplomatic vehicles with men inside them. it is said they're full of experts who are heading inside. we need to speak to someone who has been in there and who has seen the bodies of the four attackers, he said he was struck by how young they were. 18, 19 years old. the attackers responsible for this were very young men indeed. >> legal' leave it right there. thank you. >> it was a great and long day the talks in switzerland between the iranians and six world powers. among them, the united states.

12:12 pm
-- >> we go to saudi arabia. we have the saudi coalition spokesman ahmed asiri addressing the media and what has been regular events in yemen. >> our targets are clear and we're working by the grace of god to hit them directly. what i would like to point out at the beginning of the today's briefing is that before i the operation of the strikes under way to achieve all the goals and the targets laid down for the campaign. and this will be demonstrateed today's presentation including the video clips. you have noticed over the past days namely yesterday that you were furious to know the
12:13 pm
development in aden during yesterday's briefing. some inquired why we didn't speak about the fall of the presidential palace in the hands of the houthis. our main concern was the ultimate outcome. we shouldn't respond to each and every action. we should leave the party to operate and negotiate the action. otherwise it would be well planned military campaign. we always depend on preemptive strikes laid down objective goals and targets work on hitting them, and leave it to the enemy or the other party to act in the action. this is exactly what happened the other day.
12:14 pm
a number of other groups fighting sporadic fighting. they're fighting only to win the victories. they are infiltrating inside aden, trying to film some footage. this is what happened at some point when they reached the presidential palace yesterday. the popular resistence committees and the loyal we dropped logistic assistance to the economy committee fighters. we've seen the logistics dropped, and by the grace of god this shift of power on the ground. as a result, the houthi militias
12:15 pm
inside the presidential palace and other areas that fell under their control retreated. now we have laid certain siege preventing any logistic or military supplies being provided to them. we are assisted by forces of the yemeni army, and we'll continue to operate until backed total by under our control. those militias are assisted by defectors who are fighting in despair. they're totally in despair. we are in close contact and communication with fighters on
12:16 pm
the ground. the houthis the houthi militias and our operations extend from the borderline of libya to the north, until or up to to aden. those militias are acting and operating in isolation. we do not have a clear military plan. they are not even in contact or connection with one another one group to another. they are isolated, cut-off militias. they'll continue and work to drive them off prevent communication or supplies being provide: yesterday the coalition forces started and this will be demonstrated in order to make things clear. the past few days we have been
12:17 pm
monitoring houthi militias trying to stifle weapons to this particular island. this particular island houses large number of militias, rockets launchers, tanks, including surface to air missile. it is no secret that these weapons are positioned here in order to cripple the movement. over the past days the operation succeeded in destroying large numbers of weapons and ammunitions. this was one of the operations carried oh out yesterday. we'll continue to operate at the same level at the same momentum concerning the airstrikes we
12:18 pm
will address as many of the operations that took place or were carried out yesterday. the majority of these operations were scud missile launchers. many questions were made by these particular type of missiles. we said we're working on that, and this is one of the fixed goals of the campaign. however, the houthi militias are keeping those rockets on the move others are being concealed concealed. inbred's operation managed to destroy a large number of these missiles some were concealed. once received intelligence and established intelligence
12:19 pm
information that this housing target is housing rockets. once it was established we immediately launched the stake. this is one of the depots. you can see the magnitude of the explosion under fire. it is a clear indication that large ammunition was stored. it is no secret that monitoring, assessing, and following up with all these pieces of intelligence information require a great deal of time and a great deal of effort. that's why i said we will continue to operate at the same
12:20 pm
level, the same momentum closing in on the houthi militias and ensuring that the military and fighting capabilities have been weakened. as we said before those militias cannot be totally annihilated. they're moving in small groups, small numbers. that's why we cannot totally exterminate them. however, we are certain that we're able to weaken them and make them almost ineffective. as you can see you can see concealled among trees. i address the issue of the new island with respect to the ground operations, the houthi militias are still carrying out
12:21 pm
desperate attempts up to the borderline of saudi arabia spreading skirmishes, sporadic gun firing. before one hour the yemeni crossing border came under attack. the ground troops there swiftly responded even inside the houthi militias, they're in conflict and also as differences. this is a clear indication that they have lost control, lost their stability. and we'll continue working in this operation. with respect to the operations
12:22 pm
we're still continue to monitor sea ports. monitoring all the ships. entering analyzing all pieces of information and taking action as required. this is the end of the briefing, and i open the floor to questions. >> saudi news agencies. the yemeni state official may have been hijacked by the houthi militias. why aren't you providing any form of support and media at a similar level it is known to
12:23 pm
many that when the houthi militias see the capital of sanaa, they start to seize and take control of all the vital facilities including state constitution state media television right here. otherwise, and that the facility they failed to control they destroyed them. we're working step by step. our main concern is to restore security provide protection to the yemeni cities, and by the grace of god other media out outlets and those other countries who are taking part in the coalition enlightening not only the yemeni public but the world. our main concern is to restore stability and security and provide the necessary protection
12:24 pm
to the yemeni people. later on we'll work on other fields includinged the media. we're concerned that as our voice reach the yemeni people through your cells and media outlets in the region including those countries taking part in the coalition our key goal now is to provide protection and security to the yemeni people. >> well, as we see the questioning continues there in riyadh as part of the daily briefing by the coalition spokesman, talking on behalf of the saudi-led coalition. it is the principle aim of the operations to insure the security and protection of the yemeni people. let's see what we learned in
12:25 pm
terms of the military operation by bringing in justin crump global security and intelligence analyst. they didn't say anything earth shattering or anything that you didn't already know. >> no, what's interesting is some of the things that they're not quite talking about, i think one of the key developments we've seen around aden is the fact that the air-dropped weapons to the forces that the coalition is supporting. i think if you look at the situation of aden in a moment, they're cut off from the western peninsula side of aden. it shows there was no control of the port. that's almost a last resorts to go to try to get supplies. >> if you could control the port you would just land the weapons. you wouldn't drop them haphazardly. >> yes it does suggest a sense of urgency in aden and i think the presidential palace-been recovered but that's very much on the front lines.
12:26 pm
i know the houthis are confident, that they're going to achieve control of aden. >> the houthis have circle military might behind them. >> yes. >> the people who are trying to protect aden at the moment don't seem to, even weapons dropped by the coalition they're not going to be able to drop heavy weapons, it will be rpgs, maybe some rifles and machine guns. is it an unevil battle? >> it's looking that way. at saudi campaign as we saw in the footage today has been a strategic campaign focused on prediction and and of course these targets are easier to hit than small tactical targets on the front lines of the battlefield which calls for air control and things that the
12:27 pm
coalition may not have to have. >> i want to ask you about what i mentioned to our correspondent, in the east of the country, several hundred kilometers from the area. but they have an army base in that area. >> this is a significant development that's being overlooked and yemen mass always been in difficult situations. a few years ago the biggest threat has probably been seen as the southern separatist movement. of course, they're fighting houthis at the moment but they have more in common. a number of the tribes-- >> which is an oil-rich area as well. >> yes and yemen used to be two countries until 1990. a lot of people's living memory there was a war.
12:28 pm
groups like al-qaeda and-- >> they feel like the pressure is off them because everyone is concentrating what is happening in sanaa and aden. >> it used to be said that it was like dancing on the heads of snakes. and you can see multiple threats emerging and multiple threats and this could enable something else. >> just a quick point for now justin. you seem pessimistic about the future of aden. where does the conflict go after there? >> i'll be hospital. the fall of aden. the coalition's short-term objective is the defense of aden. the long-term objective is the houthi power in the country. it is possible that aden will
12:29 pm
fall. that is not a terminal blow to the campaign. they're talking about the blockade the maritime efforts the sense of siege and i think areas to isolate and cut off yemen regardless. it could an set back, but strategiccally they can continue weakening houthies, and they have other options. i would suggest settling in for a long-term game from what we're hearing. >> we'll remind you of what we're seeing from our screens. this is aden, as we understand, street battle there is with weapons being dropped by the saudi-led coalition. those militia tribal people who are loyal to the president abd rabbuh mansur hadi, but the houthi rebels, who have come down to have some control firing on the city from the mountains surrounding aden the
12:30 pm
job is to protect civilians there. go to our website for more. we have more on the iranian story there if you delve deeper you'll find out more about what is happening in yemen. >> white house press secretary tells al jazeera the administration is staying wary a day after making a deal with over tehran's nuclear program. a day of mourning and calls for swift justice after al-shabab storms a kenyan
