coast as the european union try to step up their efforts. total and utter devastation. more than 100 people we now believe have died after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck nepal just to the north of the capital of kathmandu. there is little people could do but to dig through rubble with their bear hands to desperately reach people. injured treated out in the streets. fears and aftershocks fear collapses meaning that this more than likely was the safest place. the monuments and historic buildings. this was the tower in kathmandu before the quake. this was what was left after the tremor reduced it's two

republic. we understand that a number of people who were visiting this died when it collapsed. let's hear now from subina. shrestha who is in kathmandu. >> people describe wave after wave of tremors the army sifting through the rubble looking for signs of life as well as bodies. the number of people killed is rapidly increasing. hundreds of bodies have been recovered. >> people have been trap in the rubble and the ministry is mobilizing it's crane. >> hospital beds have been set up on the streets and in the woods. treatment is basic. nepal is asking india to send mobile medical teams. the worst damage is in old kathmandu. it has narrow-winding lanes many

blocked with rubble making it difficult for rescuers to get in. a 19th century tower has been knocked down. only a touch stump remains. >> people are afraid to go back to their homes. as darkness sets, people have come to these public places and built a shelter. it looks like a storm is coming and people are bracing themselves for a cold and wet night. 2.5million people live in kathmandu valley, their reports whole villages have been destroy. nepal is facing a major disaster and it's asking its neighbors for help. al jazeera kathmandu. >> the charity world vision, depash told me that people have been told it stay indoors

because of the power cuts. >> i'm outside of my house i don't see a light at all and that causes trouble in the current situation. in our situation it's a blackout. we could hear people just moving around, trying to see how they're able to rescue people by themselves. however, we've been alerted by the local media as well not to remain--to remain safe. we just heard the announcement from the local authority not to get into houses including myself family and neighbors just aside the house having a temporary shelter. we're concerned by about the children. some of our friends and staff

the authorities across the states expecting that number to rise in the coming hours and in the coming days. however, in terms of the assessments of how bad the damage is on the indian side of the himalayas we have yet to learn more about that as well. we should say by and large the priority the indian government has set as of this afternoon is really helping nepal and getting as much aid and expertise into nepal as possible. that's where the latest lines lie with the indian government as well. >> how difficult is it because some parts of the kathmandu valley are inaccessible how difficult is it to get the help to those who most need it? >> that's right, there are updates on that front. firstly, as we just came to you last two choppers air india air

force choppers were on route to nepal, they were turned back because of bad weather keeping in mind that helicopters fly lower than the airliners. who an air force aircraft have made it into nepal. the humanitarian aid that they're carrying as well as expertise and sniffer dogs have been handed over to the nepalese ? operations beginning in the morning. we have other things being mobilized. commercial aircraft in india are putting out statement this is evening saying they'll be carrying relief aid as well as accredited members of organizations to help with relief efforts in nepal. however, the main airport in kathmandu does remain closed at this point in time. it's a case of if and when the

airport will open and flights will resume in new delhi and calcutta in the east of india. we heard that railways have sent 100,000 bottles of water by rail to nepal. you can just see the variety and perhaps the extent of the relief operations that are just beginning from the indian side, and we're expecting as per the indian government statement it's throughout the evening that this will be scaled up quite considerably in the hours and days to come. >> what about the weather up there? we mentioned the storm meaning the helicopters could not get through. but people have lost their homes. is it very cold as well as wet? >> well, eternally across northern india summer is setting in. in states it is quite hot. however getting closer to the himalayan range as the temperatures drop we're not hearing much about the extent of the cold perhaps on the indian side. we are hearing that it's hampering indian efforts to get

as much aid and help as possible across to nepal. what would be interesting to know is if, in fact the weather remains quite deterrent in the hours and days to come where the road roots roots in nepal become more of a priority or perhaps become first points because there are major migration roots. given the huge number of nepal nepalese who live in india, and those who live on the other side you might see movement in terms of relatives and others who are looking to go back and forth at this time. in terms of weather on the indian side, not much being talked about here. however, certainly the biggest point of discussion is how that will elect how much india can do in the immediate future when it comes to the relief and recovery that is needed in nepal. >> thank you.

dr. brian bapti head of seismology telling me that the aftershocks are likely to last for a few weeks. >> the rule of thumb of aftershocks is that the largest aftershocks are generally one order of magnitude than the main shock, which means we might get earthquakes up to 6.8 which are big earthquakes in their right. we've already seen a magnitude of 6.6 earthquake. we could see that over time although the number will reduce with time, and those can cause severe problems, particularly if the buildings are already damaged, and it can hamper the relief effort. >> now syrian activists say that rebel fighters have taken control of a strategic city in the country's northwest.

it is in the idleb province that there have been days of fighting there. the group is targeting of the towns nearby. four people were killed when three car bombs went off in iraq close to the border with jordan. it was at the border crossing in the western part of the country. the victims are said to be all members of iraq's security forces. it's almost a month since iraqi government forces drove isil out of tikrit. many people who did live there are still to go back fearing sectarian attacks. some members of what we call the popular mobilization forces committed these acts. >> i'm from tikrit, i tell the people and the families to return. we are your brothers. the conditions are good and your

neighbors are returning. >> in yemen saudi-led coalition airstrikes have been targeting houthi positions in the southern port city of aden. the rebels along with forces loyal to ali abdullah saleh have been trying it push their way through a district northwest of aden.. controlling aden. on the outskirts of aden battles continue to control the area. local resistence fighters were able to push back the houthies. pokara. tremors were felt in india where 34 died. tibet and china also affected. the polls just closed in togo's presidential election where the current president is the clear favorite to win a third term. about 3.5 million voters choosing between five candidates. the president has been president since 2005. the election was delayed after ten days after an electronic voting system was abandoned because they didn't think it would work properly.

>> they cast their vote earlier. the whole place went wild of a theafter opposition vote came to make his selection. there are only two countries where there are no presidential term limits. that is here and in gambia. that is why there is a lot of focus on this election. late last year then president was forced out of office in burkina faso when he tried to change the constitution so he could run a third term. that was the protest that pushed him out. we're watching also from a local

perspective. they'll compare their results with the official results. if there are any discrepancies this is something that is going to be highly lighted quite quickly. and it will be up to the head of the electoral commission to deal with this. >> burindi's ruling party say that they can run for a third election in june. offer the country's opposition said that the decision violates the terms of burindi's constitution. ifit states that the president can only serve two terms. pakistani human rights activists have been shot dead. he was attacked by gunmen in karachi after hosting a talk on forced disappearances in the province where security forces are fighting separatists.

>> she's doing what she liked campaigning for human rights. she set up the second floor in karachi in 2007 and frequently hosts human rights events. >> i think its critical in any city but especially a city that sees so much conflict, to have some unity spaces where people with get together around shared interests. >> but her fight to improve the lives of others may have cost her her own. this is now a crime scene. she had just left the building when she was shot at close range by two gunmen on a motorbike. her mother was also injured in the attack and is in critical condition in the hospital. >> she was leaving her event. two gunmen came up on a motorcycle and shot her. the daughter was killed and her mother was injured.

also desperate to leave. those we talk to say that life is difficult and staying in ethiopia is not an option. these are some of the childhood friends who saw them off two months ago. they hoped to follow soon. an even as they grieve they have not abandoned that plan. >> i know they are all dangerous. it beats being stuck here. i know life will be better when i go. >> they attempted the journey but he never got to his destination. they were turned back at the libyan border. he said that smugglers failed to agree on a payment for the border police. >> the smugglers are brutal. they don't care about anyone. they only care about money. they treated us badly. they beat us. >> ethiopia has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. still it's a poor country. many people are unemployed.

chile that 43 years of lying dormant is just a cat nap in the life of an active volcano. it erupted late sunday, now many who were forced to evacuate were allowed to go back to check on their homes and clear roads and roofs as best they could. >> i came to remove the ash from the roof so it won't collapse. we're nervous and don't know when we'll be able to return home. >> a state of emergency remains in affect in the towns and cities near the volcano. >> the volcano is very unstable and it could erupt again. it is still in eruption, but it could mean larger lava flows and explosions that could put people's lives at risk.
