4:08 am
oerupt. i understand the situation in the town is a bit calmer today but the protests are continuing. police roadblocks are being set up in the road to the town. they were in favor of a new railway line passing through their town. they weren't against it. they wanted this infrastructure. but then the local media reported a few days ago that the government had decided to reroute this rail link through another town which happens to be the birth place of chinese leader duncan dunn choo ping.
4:09 am
>> a lot of these protests are over environmental issues. for instance, a few months ago people power succeeded in preventing a chemical plant being built near a residential area. there are also protests against corruption. but you don't get protests against the government calling for the downfall of the communist party. the chinese people know there is a red line they cannot cross. so the government allows these protests like the one permitted here so they act as a safety valve for people to let off system. but occasionally as we have seen those protests can spin out of control. >> adrian brown reporting from beijing. the u.s. government says it's deeply concerned by an egyptian court's decision to sentence mohamed morsi to death. morsi was convicted of a
4:10 am
jailbreak during the 2011 revolution and it was inconsistent with law. rob matheson reports. >> morsi found guilty of breaking out of jail and sentenced to death. calls the court's decision politically motivated. it says executing morsi would be murder and the international community should stop it. the response around the world is mixed but some countries say action should be taken. >> european union western countries don't you ban the death penalty? since you have banned the death penalty why do you standstill? why do you stand silent? impose sanctions on them, why don't you impose sanctions on egypt? >> morsi is imprisoned, in 2011,

>> you're watching al jazeera. here are the headlines. regional political liters and yemeni officials are meeting at riyadh but the yemeni officials are not attending. five day humanitarian truce is due to expire later on sunday. at least three people have been killed in a suicide attack in afghanistan's capital taliban said it planned the bombing. thousands of refugees are believed to be stranded in the andeman sea. thailand malaysia and indonesia have all turned back boats.
4:17 am
they will be discussing the crisis. crossing over to riyadh in saudi arabia bringing in hashem ahelbarra, where the meeting is taking place between regional leaders, international leaders in attendance as well and yemeni political factions. what are we expecting to see over the next couple of hours? >> well, this is basically going to be a crucialt key meeting, in the saudi arabian capital riyadh. there are numbers from the sunni party, socialist party presidents abd rabbu mansour hadi, basically trying to form a front, forces loyal to abd rabbu
4:18 am
mansour hadi. that road map is going to be the base us for any future agreement of the country. international community is looking forward to a political settlement, i was talking to the u.s. ambassador in yemen, to the different people joining the talks and they say they are looking forward to the ceasefire to be extended to deliver immediate assistance to thousands of yemenis trapped inside the country. but they are looking forward to all factions have a settlement. the only problem the houthis have chosen not to take part in the summit, the coalition against them and they would prefer to go to different places which are neutral. >> so the question is hashem whatever comes out of the summit what chance is there for implementation when the houthis as well as any sources loyal to the former president are not in
4:19 am
attendance is what you're saying. >> reporter: that is exactly the challenge. on the ground you have houthis in control of the grounds like ibb, and districts in the southern cities of aden. but the general sentiment amongst people here for the first time we have members of the general congress party party of the former president ali abdullah saleh and perhaps we will see new changes on the ground many people loyal to ali abdullah saleh joining the letting government. this is definitely a meeting that will give significant boost to abd rabbu mansour hadi, forced out of the country he is now in compile in exile in saudi arabia.
4:20 am
he says you have to stand behind me as president i'm the ultimate legitimate authority in yemen. >> on the right side of the tv screen, that is there yemeni president, abd rabbu mansour hadi. all right we've just lost the live image hashem we are back with you. i was just saying hadi just walked into the hall, so we're expecting the conference to kick off in the next five, ten minutes or so. as we know there has been a ceasefire thats been in place for the past custom of days and expires later on sunday evening. >> reporter: absolutely and this is thing. now, the international community is willing to see the ceasefire
4:21 am
extended. i think there are talks now otry to convince the saudi-led coalition and different forces on the ground to get a chance for diplomacy. that can only happen if you have a ceasefire. that's going to be pretty much helpful so this is the united nations top envoy to yemen is here and will take part in the conference. we are getting also information that the united nations has been approaching different factions the houthis and people loyal to the government of the possibility the move to a place like geneva, to put an end to the conflict. there are different factions who are willing to go there. they say we are not willing to go to geneva just to go to geneva. we need pooh road map and agree on the elements. go back to the capital sanaa and
4:22 am
start a genuine transitional period. i think this is the biggest roadblock for this. the houthis launched a coup, hadi said, against my letting legitimate government. otherwise be side lined from the government of yemen. >> abd rabbu mansour hadi is in the hall in riyadh, we expect that conference that hashem was just telling us about to kick off. also in the lal was hall was the yemeni vipt. is there confidence that he can bring something new and different to the table?
4:23 am
the u.n. has tried in the past. >> reporter: the u.n. has tried in the past and many political factions in yemen have somehow in a way lost faith in the international community and in the u.n. in particular. gcc is pretty much involved in this political process the gcc envoy is here at the conference and the gcc secretary general is here. they would like to send a message to the international community, to play a significant role in coming up with a political settlement because you are talking about countries that neighbor yemen and particularly saudi arabia. saudi arabia says i'm concerned because further instability in yemen means more security concerns for oil-rich kingdom. so i think the united nations chief top envoy will have this
4:24 am
problem, convince the different factions in yemen that he's willing to achieve what has eluded his predecessor jamal ben omar. >> we'll leave it there, hashem ahelbarra, hashem, thank you. we're moving on to other news. u.s. special forces say they've killed an i.s.i.l. commander in a raid inside syria. abu saef was targeted in syria it will kimberly halkett has more from washington. >> the white house is telling al jazeera that it was president obama who ordered this attack in the effort to capture and
4:25 am
ultimately kill saef. we understand there was some ground or hand to hand combat that took place that resulted in the death of anu saef but the capture a young yazidi girl has been rescued and sent to her family. the united states pouring over reams of data, computers seized as well as hard drives, hard disks, they are being analyzed in terms of trying to understand who anu saef was he was in charge of oil and gas revenues. a very major source of revenue for i.s.i.l. pointing out that it did not consult syrian authorities saying that in fact the u.s. views that the actions of syria
4:26 am
have in some ways contributed to the rise of i.s.i.l. and as a result it cannot be a partner in the u.s. effort to combat i.s.i.l. the u.s. defending its actions saying they are in coordinates however with u.s. and international law. >> just to brake bring you some breaking news coming to us at al jazeera out of egypt. authorities have handing six men, convicted of carrying out attacks in the name of egypt leading what's being referred to as a jihadist movement which has pledged loyalty to the islamic state group, this is i.s.i.l according to police there. once again saying that six men who have been convicted of carrying out attacks have been handing. it is not immediately clear however where they were executed. we'll get you more information on that story when we have it. moving on to burundi.
