on that story and everything else that we have been covering on the program on our website the address on your screen right now, www.aljazeera.com. our top story there that attack on the turkish town near the syrian border. >> the cuban embassy open for business for the first time in over 50 years. the u.n. security council has endorsed the iran nuclear program. >> is he a war hero because he was captured? i like people who were not captured. >> donald trump stands by his

message that mccain was no hero. now the senator is sending a message to trump. >> this is al jazeera america live from new york city. i'm randall pinkston. for the first time in five decades the cuban flag is flying over that country's embassy in washington, d.c. the embassy reopened just a few hours ago as did the embassy in washington, d.c. the embassy in havana did not as much fanfare as there was in washington. no ceremony, no flag raising that's because many cubans are unsure how restoring relations will effect them. >> cubans are excited about normalization. with that announcement by president obama and raul castro
12:32 pm
back in december of last year with their intentions to normalize relations people saying there was a sense of exhilaration in havana and people had tears streaming down their faces. six months on there is cautious optimism when you ask people how they feel, and whooping 97% of cubans in a survey conducted by the "washington post," 97% of cubans support normalization but how is this going to impact ordinary people? it depends on what industry you're in. if you're in the tourism industry you're going to see an impact of influx of americans coming in. but if you're a cuban with no miami connection it's harder to get a sense of what kind of impact it would have on that group of cubans. >> that is melissa chan in havana. now let's go to libby casey outside of the cuban embassy in washington. tell us what you saw.
12:33 pm
>> the cuban flag was raised for the first time in five decades. certainly symbolic. and also there it has been significant in terms of policies behind that. the u.s. officially has an embassy in havana and cuba has an embassy here. this basically creates more of a dealershippic relationships and gives those who work here at the embassy much more of a presence and gives them basically full diplomatic antis. we saw the flag go up, a lot of pomp and circumstance going on with that. we heard the national anthem of cuba play, and we saw hundreds of people gather to hear the foreign minister of cuba speak. the first time someone of that
12:34 pm
stature has been on u.s. soil in decades, something that the state department in and of itself is. >> i there were some demonstrators there. what was their message? >> frankly a lot of demonstrators out here were pro-cuba, and were in favor of the u.s. lifting its embargo. rolling back sanctions ending with what they're calling the blockade. we heard cries of long live cuba long live raul, and long live fidel even. not nextly a message that the u.s. supports but there was a feeling of celebration here. there were a couple of protesters pushing back what was happening today. we saw one or two signs protesting human rights abuses on behalf of the cuban government. one man was arrested. he had smattered himself in some symbolic display of red powder or paint that looked like blood.
12:35 pm
he was taken away because he tried to get too close to the cuban embassy as guests were being let in. >> were there any presidential officials at the opening? >> we did not see secretary of state john kerry here but we did have the deputy secretary roberta jackson who was involved getting together the negotiations over the last month to reach this opening. of the embassy. we also saw members of congress on hand like senator patrick leahy, democrat from vermont. he has been a proponent of legislation that would lift sanctions against cuba. president obama, while he has some authority as commander in chief to normalize relations there are still some things he cannot do. one of them is to fully lift the embargo. that would take acts of congress. while members of congress are pushing to see that happen, there is enough push back by folks like marco rubio that
12:36 pm
they're going to try to get in the way of that, randall. for now it's a day for the obama administration to celebrate this success. >> and the meeting between secretary of state counsel kerry and his cuban counterpart later this afternoon. the united nations security council approved nuclear deal with iran another historic moment. president obama praising that a short time ago saying it will usher in a new era of relations. the deal sets off a path for iran to build a peaceful nuclear energy program without building weapons, and it sets the framework for lifting economic sanctions. paul beben is live at the united nations. paul, the united states congress still has to vote on the deal, but the u.n.'s approval could be a game changer. >> absolutely, randall. while the u.n. approval makes
12:37 pm
this international law it goes into effect officially in 90 days sometime in mid-october. the united nations giving their approval today. you heard a lot of people at capitol hill both republicans and democrats, but especially republicans are not happy with this. and they say the deal leapfrogs congress, and that's not the way they want it to play out. but this caps years of negotiations as recently as a week ago there were sticking points but now the work begins. in december there is a major landmark that will be the first report from the international atomic agency. they'll let the world know if iran is complying with the deal. but in the meantime, the obama administration is praising the deal. the president is speaking earlier this morning. let's take a listen.
12:38 pm
>> this is by far our strongest approach to insure that iran does not get a nuclear weapon. there is broad international consensus around this issue not just among the international community, but also among experts. my assumption is that israel will pay attention to that broad-based consensus. >> here this morning at the u.n. we heard from the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. samantha power saying that this deal in no way means that the u.s. is not holding iran accountable for other bad actions in the region for destabilizing its neighbors. then we heard from iran's ambassador. he pushed back right at samantha powers saying that iran is committed to peaceful nuclear power and non-proliferation. and all nations should only have
12:39 pm
non-proliferation programs. >> it does not see peace in the region as considers piece as extension of itself. >> we alert our friends and neighbors not to fall into the trap. >> randall one of the fiercest critics of this deal has been israel. this morning benjamin netanyahu speaking to the knessett saying that this deal is in no way the last word and that u.s. and israel still have other options. secretary of defense ashton carter is in israel today. he's traveling to saudi arabia tomorrow assuring u.s. allies in the region that there is more that the u.s. can do to reassure them during this time as the deal is put into place. but as you pointed out a shiftic
