argues that sea levels will rise faster almost ten times faster, than climate chains conference just ten years ago. >> it does indeed. pretty scary scenario if that were to come about. there is a little bit of evidence that jim hanson points to in the article. and then he extrapolates greatly in order to come up with the kind of conclusions that he's dealing with. and certainly there's a lot of what he calls nonlinearities, or feed backs involved, it is a run away instead of a steady melt that he's assuming. >> right. >> the key question relies on how reliable some of the current evidence relating to melting ice is, in terms of it being representative of the climate change element. because there's also a natural

variability component. and it's very hard to sort those two components out. >> so from your perspective it's just making jumps that can't -- that shouldn't be made, yet? >> i think he's raised a number of issues which are well worth looking into further. but which you cannot really draw the conclusions that he draws at the moment, with regard to how rapid the climate change will be and how soon it will. but, you know, climate change is happening. it's real. and one of the key points is that we will very likely get there sooner or later. and what jim is saying is that it's sooner. maybe decades instead of a few hundred years or something like that. >> right because if it -- if the report' findings are accurate it would mean that major coastal cities could be uninhabitable in

several decades. >> right but that's a big if. >> a big if. the study's maim argument is cooler fresh water coming from glaciers is forcing warmer water probably a little confusing for those of us who are laymen but is that what you think is the problem that it's going too far and the effect that will have? >> well we've seen some examples. i mean one of the best examples is a major glacier in greensland where the removal of the ice shift, the removal of the ice shelf which acted as a buttress to one of the glaciers there allowed the glacier to flow much more rapidly. so part of interior of greenland began to flow into the ocean

much more rapidly. it slows down but relates to the bottom topography, it doesn't necessarily continue for decades or years. >> last question, the process is unstoppable, what can be done? >> we have a real problem in that we are changing the climate, changing the composition of the atmosphere. i think jim's concerns are very real. i don't think that the arguments that he uses with regard to sea level rising so rapidly are necessarily the most compelling once however. the ones with regard to storms already, hurricanes, there is a typhoon that hit japan today with prodigious amounts of rain. there is already evidence of damage occurring through climate change and we need to do something about it. >> doctor, good to have you with us to give us your perspective
