that we can give our family plenty of love until the end of our time on earth. hope our society to trust that pham illial love will help sustain those we care about, and that this love will be passed on to their children, grandchildren and their families beyond. thank you the festival of families continues with pope francis in philadelphia. and our coverage will continue right after this.
9:01 pm
9:02 pm
welcome back to philadelphia, i'm john seigenthaler, joined by sally quinn and patrick horn back as we watch testimonials, as the pope watches and listens to many testimonials and performances at the festival of families. millions of dollars raised to put on this event in philadelphia by the catholic church. among the things that amazed me is to look out into the crowd, and the people have been here for hours and hours and hours. this is a long program. it has gotten chilly. the pope has stayed. i don't see anyone, few people leaving. >> nobody is moving.
9:03 pm
>> they are not going to leave until the pope leaves, because they want every minute they can with him. they are not leaving. people have come from south america and walked across the country. there's no way anyone is going to move until the pope leaves. >> and in the city of philadelphia, tenses of thousands fathered. the programme is a couple of hours long, maybe longer. it's been a long day for many. they started on the trains in philadelphia. they had to have a papal pass, and they have been here all day, many trying to get through the security to see him come by the basilica, when he said mass or independence hall or this event tonight. it really is a special event. and as we saw the picture of a
9:04 pm
mum hugging a child with a jacket around it, it's all about families tonight. >> i have to say, this is a long programme for the pope to sit through, given that he was up so early and had so many other events. i'm surprised that the vatican didn't vet the programme and cut it a little shorter. >> he's had a long day. >> and he has a long day tomorrow. >> he starts in new york. >> right. >> this is amazing that he would sit through six testimonials and all the music and all of that. i'm surprised. >> you notice he's taking notes too. >> it's remarkable. >> he's taking notes and seems alert. not like ginsberg at the state of the union where she fell asleep. >> let's talk about the schedule. tomorrow the pope begins meeting
9:05 pm
with the bishops here in philadelphia. >> that's where he's staying. >> starts at 9am. a little later than this morning. he'll sleep in a little bit. he then visits the prison. it's been important to the pope. he celebrated holy thursday in prison. he's gone to visit prisons. and the u.s. a place in incarcerates visitors. it will not be surprising if he makes comments on prison reforms. he has a while off. a few hours of down time, and returns here to this stage. which will be recon figured in the form of a church, for the concluding mass, for the pap pal visit and the festival of families. they expect a million, 1.5, and a million form. -- tomorrow. >> then what's. >> he gets on a plane.
9:06 pm
he nation concluding remarks, then climbs up the steps to an american airlines 777 aircraft. they fly the italian airline on the way to the country, and fly the host country's or one of the host country's airlines on the way back to the vatican. >> how much planning, how long did it take to plan the event? >> the festival of families. i know that in philadelphia, there's a story in the "new york times" about the promoters and producers that have been involved in the production of this city. their concert. you know... >> the festival, the world meeting of families is like the olympics. >> the last event tomorrow, the archbishop or another bishop will announce the next one, which meets in 2018. they happen every three years. philadelphia knew that they would be the host of that meeting three years ago.
9:07 pm
my guess is they'd come. he'd resign. planning has been three years in the making. he had the u.n. general assembly to work around, bringing that in two. the plans has gone on clearly for a year, at least. probably longer than that. >> yes. and obviously not an easy thing to plan. this gives you an idea, they are all over the area. don't forget that john boehner invited him a numberful times. >> and his predecessor as well. >> by the way... >> and other folks. this is the first that accepted the invitation to speak before a joint session. >> they are changing up the schedule that we saw, and it appears that the pope will speak
9:08 pm
next. we'll watch to see if that happened. there were a couple of musical guests that they may have pushed back to let the pope speak, and maybe get away and get some rest. this may have gone on longer than he expected or everyone else expected. but it has not - the crowd hasn't dissipated, and they continue to watch on those jumbo trons, even though many of them can't get that close to the stage. >> you were asking about the overview of this festival of the families. and i just think that it's catholic with a small c. it seems to have a universal appeal as opposed to being just catholic. >> it looked like the pope was going to speak. it looked like he was sitting down. they decided to have the speech
9:09 pm
now. [ cheering ] >> we can hear cheers from the crowd. >> obviously it looks like this was a bit of a change in the schedule. it's running a bit later than expected. this really is what many of the people in the crowd have been waiting for. >> there's a group behind shouting francisco. and long live the pope. >> translation: dear families. thank you - thank you to those who are willing to give their testimony - thank you to those who gladdened us with your hart.
9:10 pm
with the beauty, which is the path to god. beauty leads us to god. takes us to god. because god also is true. beauty and truth. and witness, given in order to serve, is thoroughly good.
9:11 pm
it makes us good persons, because god is goodness. he takes us to god. all that is true, all that is beautiful leads us to god. [ cheering and applause ] because god is good. god is beautiful. god is true. >> thank you all. those who've offered their witness and for the presence of all of you, that is a great witness. a real witness that it's worth being a family.
9:12 pm
society is strong, solid. edified. beauty, goodness and truth. once a child asked me you know kids ask difficult questions. he asked me father r what did god do before creating the
9:13 pm
world. i assure you i found real difficulties answering the question. i will say now what i will say to you. before creating the world, god loved. because god is love. >> and so much love. the father, son, and holy spirit. it was so overflowing i don't
9:14 pm
know if this is very logical but you'll understand, it was so big this love that god could not be egoistic. it had to be pored out of him. so as to share that love with those out of himself. and then god created the world. god made this marvellous world in which he lived. >> sometimes we are a bit confused. we are destroying it. >> the most beautiful thing that god did, said the bible was the
9:15 pm
family. he created man, he created woman. and he gave them everything. he gave them the world. so that this may grow. multiplied. cultivate the land. multiply and grow. all that love that he made in creation, he gave it and share itted and bestowed it upon a family -- and shared it and bestowed it upon a family. let us go back further.
9:16 pm
all the love that god has in himself, all the beauty that he has, he gives it to the family. when it is able to openize arms. and receive all that love. of course, it's not quite earthy paradise. there are still problems. men and women through the
9:17 pm
astuteness of the devil have learnt, unfortunately, how to divide themselves. all that love that god gave, almost was lost in a little period of time. the first crime. first instance of fatric. >> de. a brother kills another brother, and war. beauty and truth of the god. and destruction and war.
9:18 pm
we walk ahead. to choose. to decide which part we want to take forward. let's go back. when a man and his wife, god did not abandon them.
9:19 pm
so great was his love that he began to walk with his people until the right moment came. and he made a high expression of love. his own second. and where did he send his son? to a palace, to a city, to company - no. he sent him to a family. god sent him amid a family, in a family. and he could do this because it was a family that this a truly open heart. the doors of the heart opened.
9:20 pm
he couldn't believe it. how can this happen. but when they explained it to her, he finds himself in a surprising situation that he doesn't understand. and he accepts, obeys and in obedience love is born. he loved that man, mary and joseph. there is a family to which jesus is born.
9:21 pm
>> god plans that our hearts be open. it comes out from him. do you know what he likes most. to knock on the doors ever families. and to find families who love each other. families who bring up their children to grow and help them move forward, to develop society, a truth, goodness and
9:22 pm
beauty. [ clapping ] >> we are celebrating the feast of the family. families have a citizenship which is difficult sign. the identity card that they have is given to them by god. so that within the heart of the family, truth, goodness and beauty can truly grow. some of you might say, of course, father, you speak like that because you're not married.
9:23 pm
families have the difficulties. families - we quarrel. sometimes plates can fly. and children bring headaches, some are known as mother-in-laws. but in families, there's always might.
9:24 pm
because the love of god, the son of god opened also that part. but just as there are problems in families, we have to remember that there is a light and the resurrection afterwards. because the son of god greeted that part. forgive me but i have to say that the family is like a factory of hope. it's a factory of resurrection. god opened this part, this possibility. and children.
9:25 pm
yes, they bring their challenges. and we we are the cause of work and worry. sometimes i see some and they look tired. a one-month-old child, baby, and i ask them "do you sleep?", and they said i couldn't sleep because they were crying all night. in the family there are, indeed difficulties. but those difficulties are
9:26 pm
overcome with love. hatred is not capable of dealing with any difficulty and overcoming any difficulty. division of hearts cannot overcome any difficulty. only love. only love is able to overcome. love is about celebration. love is joy. love is moving forward. i don't speak too much.
9:27 pm
but i would like to offer two points about the family. to take special care. some things that we really do have to take care of. >> the children, and grandparents. and grandparents. children when young or older. they are future and strength that emphasis us ford. we place our hope in them.
9:28 pm
grandparentless. are the living memory of the family. they passed on the faith. they transmitted the faith to us. to look after grandparents, to look after children. it is the expression of love. it promises the future of people that doesn't know how to look after their children, and the people that nose not how to look
9:29 pm
after grandparents. is the people that has no future. because it doesn't have strength or the memory to go forward. [ clapping ] >> harmony is beautiful. but there's experts involved, and there are problems. in families there are enymical relationships. husbands, wives quarrel. can end up badly separated.
9:30 pm
never let the day end. without making peace. in a family you can't finish the day off not being in peace. may god bless you and give you hope. they look after families, they protect the families, because it is the family. that our future is at play. thank you god bless you all and please pray for me. [ cheering and applause ]
