today. again, you will not hear anyone from this law enforcement operation use his name. i continue to believe that those media and community members who publicize his name will only glorify his horrific actions, and eventually this will only serve to inspire future shooters. at this time, i would like to introduce atf assistant special agent in charge salinas, nunez. >> good morning. i wanted to provide information on the weapons we have in custody is to far. so far we have recovered 13 weapons. out of those 13 weapons, we currently have in custody six were recovered at the school, seven were recovered at the

1:37 pm
authority have recovered, including 14 weapons six found at the school. our allen schauffler has been listening to this. he is standing by in roseburg. what else did we learn from this news conference today, allen? >> reporter: boy, you nailed the one thing that was really sort of startling to us here today. and that the extent of the armament that this gentlemen had. we had heard three or four weapons were recovered at the school. it turned out that six were recovered at the school. seven we recovered in his house with considerable amount of ammunition. they didn't exactly quantify how much. also, confirming that a flak jacket was found at the school near the shooter. so this was a gentlemen who were considerably better armed -- or potentially better armed than we
1:38 pm
knew just a couple of minutes ago. and they are in the process of tracking each of the weapons, and they do believe at this time, that everyone was purchased legally. some by the shooter, some not. some possibly by family members. and we heard a call go out indicating this investigation is still very new and raw, asking anyone who has video, pictures or information that can help, to call 1-800-call-fbi. so 1-800-call-fbi if you have any information, pictures or video. but jonathan, mostly, as the sheriff described these families living through a nightmare right now, and hoping that they can share more information about these individuals sometime later in the day, when the oregon state medical examiner clears that information. right now the sheriff saying
1:39 pm
we're not going to release any names before that happens. >> still a lot of unknowns now. not just the victim, but also the suspect. the sheriff does not want to release that information. you interviewed the sheriff earlier today, help us better understand why he is being so forceful on this topic. >> reporter: well, i think ho laid it out pretty well in that news conference. his's firm opinion that naming someone glorifies them. he believes part of the reason this young man did this is he wanted to be famous. and this sheriff is saying that that name is not going to give his name out. that name will come out, the medical examiner will release it at some point, but this sheriff adamant that that's not what he
1:40 pm
wants to do at this point, and he's not going to. no matter how many times we shout questions at him, he is not going to use that name. >> and with that name comes the answers to a possible motive and hopefully something like this could be prevented in the future. we did learn that he had 14 weapons. six found at the school, seven found at his home, and that they had all been bought within the last three years, and all bought legally, although some were also bought by a family member. so as they try to piece together where these weapons came from, this is going to play into the national debate about gun control. >> oh, they absolutely will, and people might have noticed a bit of a discrepancy. they mentioned 13 weapons and 14 weapons. one of those weapons which he had purchased he had somehow
1:41 pm
traded back or exchanged back, so they physically found 13 weapons totally. but this will absolutely fire up the gun debate nationally. we saw president obama lighting that kindling yesterday, in a very personal emotional way. douglas county is a very rural place. gun ownership is at a very high percentage here. you won't hear a lot of folks in this area pushing for tighter gun control, but it will spark a debate in this town and around the country. >> i want to replace what the atf special agent in this charge said about this. because this will come up a lot in the future. >> so far we have recovered 13 weapons. out of those 13 weapons we currently have in custody six were recovered at the school, seven were recovered at the

1:43 pm
many people there? >> reporter: it has been very hard. just looking at the faces of the relatives waiting at the fairground yesterday, for information about loved ones. it has been very, very difficult here. there is 21,000 or so people in this city. it's just not that big. so just about everybody in town will know somebody at the school or know somebody who does. so it will be something that effects this very small community in a very big way. roseburg is 85 miles south to the next major population center. it's 80 miles north to the next major population center. so it's somewhat isolated and these folks are going to have a hard time. they do seem to be very tough, as one lady told me last night at the vigil, this is who we

today, they show a big slow down in hiring. not good news. >> no, it was disappointing across the board, jonathan. signalling weakness in economies overseas like china are washing up on our shows. the jobs figures for august and july were also both revised downward, and that pulled the average number created this year below the 200,000 mark. so clearly the u.s. jobs engine is slowing down. the unemployment rate held steady at 5.1% while more people left the work force. a big pocket of weakness. manufacturing lost 9,000 jobs. you can chalk that up in part to a strong u.s. dollar, making u.s. goods more expensive
1:48 pm
abroad. and u.s. oil plays are less profitable. american paychecks also failed to gain traction. when you take a step back and look at all of these pockets weakness, poor jobs creation, slowing exports, plunging commodity prices, they all lead back to china. china was a big driver of global growth after the 2008 financial meltdown, but as it slows, so does the world, and clearly the u.s. is not immune. >> and we're deeply tied to china whether we like it or not. >> we are. not in terms of how much we necessarily export to china, but all of the ways in which the weakness filters back to any u.s.
1:49 pm
another item is cheap chinese goods coming into the u.s., and they are even cheaper now, and those goods compete with domestically made goods and can force prices down more. >> you say the feds will likely not raise the interest rate until next year. >> yes, if you raise the rates too soon, you could derail the economy. and because the u.s. has the large largest economy on the planet, if you take a look at that, if he the u.s. economy derails, it can derail the global economy as well. the fed held off on raising interest rates, citing weakness in the global economy. after that a majority of policy

makers still felt they would raise rates before the end of this year, but now we get another weak jobs report, and we could very well see the fed holding off until next year. >> you think that's now the possibility. >> it definitely puts that possibility into the mix. a lot of economists will still be looking for december for them to raise rates. but we have to get another week of data, and policy makers are meeting in october. they will release a statement and of course every word of those statements are parsed against some clue as to what the fed thinking. >> always the big question. thank you patty. we do have developing news we have to get out of the bah a bahamas. the u.s. coast guard is searching for a missing ship that was traveling to san juan

from jacksonville, florida. it is thought to be caught up in hurricane joaquin. here in the u.s. emergencies have been declared in five states ahead of the storm, but the latest track could have it going out to sea. nicole mitchell has more on that. >> reporter: yes, still a potent storm and still slowly moving through the bahamas. that has been good news for the united states, but definitely causing major problems for this island nation. so we have a number of warnings up for this region, but as i said some good news for the united states. the steering is now looking more and more like it will bring it out to sea. these are some of the different computer model runs of where the

storm could go. only a couple of outliers still bring it to the united states. most are bringing it more away from the u.s. coastline. so the official track is going to bring it off to sea, something we'll have to monitor. we still could have some of the moisture making it to u.s. land. that could be interesting, because we have been dealing with this system along the coastline. i mentioned the developing low-pressure system. that's into the southeast. so the next couple of days will have very wet here. flooding rain. i'm more concerned about the flooding from this than the potential from joaquin, but places like north and south carolina, today we could get easily five, six inches of rain widespread. but some places could get over a foot of rain and the ground is already saturated so that could continue to cause problems. in the meantime. with the front going through, it
