become more popular. >> you can find out plenty more on our website. the israeli police tackling palestinians in jerusalem. plenty on the website. why not take a look. our headlines coming up in just a sec. >> after two widely watched republican debates, the democrats going at it. did you watch? 11 million tuning in to see the candidates in the democratic presidential view and talking about the issues, foreign, domestic and cosmic. what the exchange met for the five candidates on stage.
6:31 pm
what happened in vegas. it's the "inside story." >> welcome to "inside story." most americans, most voters, domestic democrats didn't watch last night's debate. but afters an important forum for those on the stage and maybe for one not even in the race. there was wide agreement and tone on others and the post mortems didn't find a time dooming or simplifying the five. we go through the five points over the two and a half hours of talk. >> it is time to start the debate, are you all ready?
6:32 pm
>> the first fireworks on the subject of guns when the former secretary of state taking aim on vermont's senator of gun control. >> is bernie sanders tough enough on guns? >> no. we are losing 90 people a day from gun violence. it is time for the country to stand up against the nra. >> kwlin ton playing defense on the matters as same-sex marriage and trade. >> i have been consistent over my life and always fought for the same values and principles, but most human beings, i do absorb new information. >> then sanders' turn to explain how a dem krasic socialist can be elected. >> we are going to win by explaining what it is. >> when explaining why u.s.
6:33 pm
should be like countries offering free healthcare and paid family leave. >> we are not denmark. we are the united states of america and it is our job to reign in the access of the capitalism. >> when clinton pressinged about the use of a private email system, sanders leading to her defense. >> i have say something that is not great politics, but i think that the secretary the right and that is that the american people are sick and tired of hearing about the damn emails. >> thank you, me too, me too. >> as for the three candidates, tuesday night was a chance to get on the map. former senator jim webb complained about not being called on. >> let's start by trying to get in on the conversation. >> before making the case for the white house. >> coming from the position what i have come from, from a
6:34 pm
military family, with my brother a marine and my son a marine, i am the most qualified person up here to be the commander and chief. >> chaffee seemed to stumble over his record. >> i just arrived and my dad arrived in office -- >> you didn't know what you were voting for? >> i just arrived to the senate. we get a takeover. >> o'malley criticized for iraq and times call for a change. >> i respect what secretary clinton and her husband has done for the country but we need new leadership for the country. >> they are moving forward to
6:35 pm
des moines, iowa. >> to examine and explain, we are joined by angela, principle and ceo of impact strategies, john from the brookings institution, a fellow and managing editor, and john, president of communications and director of government affairs and former spokesman from dennis hahser. angela, how do you explain the difference between the 23 million tuning in to see the republican debate and 11 people tuning in last night? >> i think we can go no further than donald trump's tweet about the debate, saying all of the contestants did a good job, mean it is a reality show. those of us that are political nerd types and others that like to be entertained for reality
6:36 pm
television tuned in for that reason. there are questions about donald trump could be accountable for the ratings and at least half, so if you take away that half, the democratic debate would be on pace with the republican debate. >> john, interesting exercise for a republican to watch last night? >> it was, and it wasn't. it is interesting to see sanders and clinton going after it. it is showing the weakness of the field, you yearned for someone like joe biden to get it to make it more interesting. clinton is head and shoulders above the others in the debate. everyone else looked small in come parson. >> what do you make of what you saw? >> the difference in turnout,
6:37 pm
attendance, audiences is really marked up to who was watching. for the democrats, most are tuning in to learn about the candidates and republicans tuning in to learning about the candidates and others because it is entertaining. >> did any of the candidates, do themselves the kind of good they hope, it is widely agreed nobody did fatal damage, if you are polling at 1 %, you are still 1%, they did lift the statute? >> i don't know that there will be an immediate shift in clinton's polling numbers, but i will say this is the kind of hope that her supporters needed to see, they needed to see this type of hilly -- hillary going
6:38 pm
to toe to toe and defend the changes as she evolves and explaining them, and the challenges, not supporting the trade agreement because she has seen it and we know it is not available to be viewed right now. they are not fatal mistakes and what she did solidified the base and if anything, it may create a little more of a caution to joe biden entering the race. >> john, let's talk about bernie sanders for a moment, because there are said to be aspects of his platform that are just unknown to the americans and they have not seen him make the argument until last night. >> what they saw was an
6:39 pm
individual deeply believing in the policy specifics and a set of values and what they didn't see a man that is ready to be the president of the united states. he's sloppy and a deer in the head lights and very effective senator from vermont but not ready for commander and chief. >> if you have not had a good decade, watching bernie sanders going after wall street, the bankers might you have felt a little lift? >> that is a good question. he laid out the problems of the americans, they are not being taken care, screwed by the big guy, but he didn't lay out solutions that seem to be workable. i think that is how he didn't seem presidential. we know what the problems are but we don't know what the
6:40 pm
solutions are. hillary dominated in this. to your point, angela, that is keeping joe biden out of the race. >> ahead here, whether you are still considering your options there is big contrast and did last night boost the democratic party and was it a disappointment for the republicans hoping for a stumbling flagging front runner. what happened in vegas. it's the "inside story."
6:42 pm
>> we're offering something on our menu that no-one else is offering. >> let us be clear that the greed and recklessness and illegal behavior of wall street and fraud is a business model helped to destroy this economy and the lives of millions of people. you do not, congress does vent regulate wall street, wall street regulates congress and we have to break that and please do the right thing. >> you are watching "inside story." if republicans hoping for a
6:43 pm
hillary clinton looking less like a nominee, what happened in vegas, john, angela and john are still with me. john, am i right in guessing that operatives were watching from every campaign and taking notes and seeing the lines and war game against these five candidates? >> i think they were. you are seeing them tweeting and getting the shots in as much as they could and hillary clinton could be vulnerable and pushed more to the left by sanders. if a line coming out from the debate, it is about the emails. republicans put too much faith in the emails to new york her out. what else came out is sanders
6:44 pm
being a socialist and hillary defending being an capitalist. all the nonsense in congress, they better understand she's formable. >> john, is it useful to watch it an event like last night's if you are running in the republican primaries now? >> absolutely. john is a hundred percent right, what the republicans candidates you in hillary clinton is a candidate that had the worst summer, but in the last two weeks a lot of success, between mc carthy's comments and strong debate. what happened last night was the reality two things they are scared to death of, the first is donald trump and the second is new hillary clinton. >> was the winner last night the democratic party? >> i think that the democratic
6:45 pm
party won. we can attribute the win to o'malley in the closing. no derogatory remarks about women, not finding a pathway to citizenship and you about the issues that the every day people care about, not the damn emails, that speaks volumes. there is nothing like not just getting a reality show like with the republican debates, but hearing substance and where there are differences in the substance. >> there wasn't that much difference on a lot of specifics there might be differences, emphasis, tone, but the goal was the same and the ideas were the same about guns, about bringing up the least paid americans and so on.
6:46 pm
>> sure, but i think for me what is different that everyone has had their own journey. a governor that touted being a life long democratic because he was the only life long democrat on the stage. hillary clinton was a republican at some point and she's had an interesting evolution. when bill was in the white house would never work in today's democratic party. there are differences in how they got there. >> i would say they had a good debate, but there is a lack of excitement from the night. you saw the poll ratings from the people watching, not much excitement going into it or coming out of it. not like a boy new exciting candidate. they have hillary clinton and she's the same ole, same ole.
6:47 pm
there is not the excitement there. >> john, suspect it conflict that drives some of the ratings and lack of the conflict in the democratic field and that means people that otherwise might have tuned didn't. >> conflict is a huge part of politics and entertainment and politics is entertainment in the country. you are right, very little sun light between and among the candidates last night and that is a good thing fsh the democrats. you see a stage of contenders and the house of representatives a group of people that can't elect a speaker and with the democrats they are putting out a vision for america. >> along with the assumption of watched by the republican
6:48 pm
6:50 pm
>> well, i recall very well being on a debate stage about 25 times with then senator obama, debating this very issue. after the election he asked me to become the secretary of state, he valued my judgment and i spent a lot of time with him. and in the situation room, going over some very difficult issues. >> welcome back to "inside story."
6:51 pm
i'm ray. if you are joe biden, what is your next move and watching the democratic debate. the vice president watched at the official resident in washington and what can you conclude from the shape of the race and is there room in it for you. we are a mile and a half from the vice president's house. john, what did joe biden see last night and what should it tell him? >> joe biden saw a party fairly happy with the choices laid out in front of them. what we are seeing is the same type of strategy when running in 1988 and running for president in 2008, that is the strategy of a candidate that will never become the president. he needs to stay out. >> john, you like biden's chances or prospects at one time and plausibility as a candidate.
6:52 pm
>> biden is the natural heir, the actual third term of the president. hillary clinton, it is interesting, she's been trying to get away from the obama legacy and trying to run as her own candidate and in this debate, she wanted to be the third term of the president, so for biden especially, and president obama, maybe she be a good heir to the throne to support and if i'm joe biden maybe there is not room for me. the more hillary goes astray, the more there is a role for him. right now, it is not seeming that way. >> if she's found her footing in the last couple of weeks, joe biden is not in? >> i think joe biden won't go in, there is no room at the inn for him? >> i think this is going to come
6:53 pm
down to the benghazi hearing and she testifies. >> that is coming up next week. >> yes, it is coming up. the reason i think that is because she's a formidable debater. in 2008 she won every debate. and when you think about what happens when she's on the defense, the last benghazi hearing before i believe the senate saying what difference does it make at this point and everyone understands the frustration, but for whatever reason i don't feel that the american public gives her the room to be frustrated in public. we saw it at the press conference. if she comes out poised and clear like last night, i don't think there is a space. if not, there is the opening. to john's point. if she backs awie from the third
6:54 pm
term legacy there is a number of people having president obama run again. >> it doesn't have much to do with where joe biden and hillary clinton differ and seeing the country forward and the policies getting us there. you are talking affect, who is having a bad month or a stretch of months rather than, well, is there a place for joe biden so say here is my america and differing from hilly clinton's. >> it is overstatement to say a lot of people that voted for barack obama are looking for a clone. there are plenty of democrats and progressives that are fed up with president, dealing with congress and trade deals and they feel they are unsatisfied with the vote they cast once or twice for him, so i don't know
6:55 pm
how vice president biden really threads the needle in the right way to look like anything more appealing than president obama has been or anything more appealing than hillary clinton. >> functionally, is there a drop dead date where it becomes really hard to get in? >> my opinion is getting in before this first debate. there is a philosophical difference. joe biden is a little more liberal, than hillary that likeses to attract to the midding especially on the corporate stuff and defending capitalism more than bernie sanders. joe is more with bern bernie sanders on a lot of things. the time has passed. >> thank you all the guests.
6:56 pm
john, angela at impact strategies, and former staffer at the congressional black ruckus. john from the fixed glove and author of presidential pork, white house influence over the distribution of federal grants. i will be back in a moment on the final thought on republicans, democrats and the debates show you. stay with us. it is "inside story." send us your thoughts. or visit our facebook page and tell us if last night's debate had a bearing on who you think should be the president. we'd love to hear it.
6:58 pm
6:59 pm
martin o'malley, jim webb and lincoln chaffee. when you compare to the last republican forum, the range of differences, there is not a lot of difference between o'malley and clinton and former maryland governor and senator sanders. with the control of state legislatures and chambers of commerces the republicans are much more divided in style and in emphasis, in goals. the coming debates may help the public and g.o.p. voters figure out which side they are and are they institutionalists or vying to leave the government and believing it hurts more than it
7:00 pm
helps. that's the "inside story." >> this is aljazeera america. live from new york, i'm tony harris. middle east mission, secretary kerry is heading to the middle east to try to calm relations between the israelis and palestinians. preparing a homegrown attack. the justice department's plan to deal with the real threat. and paying for firearms used to shoot police officers.
