♪ this is al jazeera. hello. you are watching the al jazeera newshour live from london. coming up in the next 60 minutes. celebrations in ankara as results show turkey's ruling akp party has regained its majority. more refugees make the perlus journey to agrees as at least 11 asylum seekers drown. >> russia mourns those who died when their plane crashed in
1:01 pm
egypt. aviation officials say it broke up in the air. how machines are threatening the jobs of white collar workers in the united states. >> we will have all of the day's sport including england make a strong start to the third test against pakistan as they fight to level the series. turkey's ruling akp party has reclaimed majority after unexpectedly winning an outright election victory. with more than 90% counted, it's won 316 seats with 49.48% of the vote. it needed 276 to governor by itself. turkey's main opposition party secured 25% of the vote.
1:02 pm
this translates into 133 seats. you have the nationalist mhp party which had 11.97% of support. >> comes in at 42 seats in the parliament. then, of course, the pro-kurdish htp party claimed 10.35% of the preliminary poll. it's imports to note if it drops below the ten percent threshold. if below that, no parliament seats at all. this is the scene at akp party headquarters. supporters were learning of the results thas they came in. it was a rerun defendant party lost its one party mandate due to a strong showing by the pro-kurdish hdp.
1:03 pm
a small group of protest orders began throwing stones in southeast urn turkey. these pictures a little earlier. fired tear gas to clear the area. there has been increasing tension between the states and rebels from the kurdistan workers' party we will hear from momar asala. jamal is also outside akp party headquarters in arrangeara. this date from bernard smith. wilt keep a close eye on if they get over the 10 percent threshold. no one expected them to do it in june. they did, 13% of the vote. it gave them 18 mps in parliament. they have taken a bit of a hit, it looks like this second time around. the polls suggested they might
1:04 pm
have had similar results. we are looking at a 10.4% share of the vote for the htp. it is really important. if they manage to hang on to that, then at least they maintain representation in parliament. they will have their neat numbers down to about 57 against the 80 that they had in june. but they dropped below 10 percent. anything just below 10 percent and they don't get one mp in parliament. to give you an idea of what that means, 4,300,000 people. more than that so far have voted for the hdp. if the hdp doesn't get into parliament, that means no parliamentae representation for more than 4 million people. that's why there is an extraordinarily high threshold in turkey, for getting parliament army representation is so controversial. it would cause, i think, considerable problems in this part of the country if the hdp didn't manage to get into parliament. >> jamal joins us live from akp
1:05 pm
party headquarters in arrangean describe for us the mood there. >> it's a bit of an understatement. the people here are surprised as much as they are overjoyed because they never expected this result, this much of a victory for their party. just about an hour ago, there were only a few dozens people. now, they are in the hundreds if not several thousand who have gathered here the speakers are pro-akp party. some raps and other music, you can see. the flags haven't stopped waving for quite awhile despite cold weather. waiting for prime minister to come here. we understand he is just about where he was and he will be
1:06 pm
coming to the capitol to address the crowd here it's interesting. the last time i was here covering these elections around five months ago when the akp party supporters were also here but this time negativinegativet it was a new experience for them using the parliamentary majority that game them ability to form a single party government. now, they are on the ascendance. they appear to be drawn by this victory to continue in what was a 13-year spell ruling the country in all forms in terms of the executive powers belonging to the president, erdoan. the majority p whether the local councils of governors belonging to the akp party, once again
1:07 pm
here thank you, jamal live in the turkish capital where we could see the prime minister getting ready to address supporters right there at party headquarters getting ready for his victory speech as these results show that the akp party have an outright victory in this election. they have won enough seats to be able to govern alone. in istanbul, omar, what can you tell us about reaction there to these results to the prospect that now looks confirmed of an act party victory. >> an absolutely victory. i think it took everyone by
1:08 pm
surprise the senior member of the republican people's party, the main opposition party here in turkey. how surprised were you by the results? >> i am not surprised. those are not the official amount of the polls. i have some suspicions about the things, so we don't know. we don't have the special computing technology but interestingly, we will learn all of the things in an hour. this is the shocking part why is it shocking? >> in one hour, we have learned a lot of things. more than half of the polls were open and announced interestingly one of the party members wrote to it.
1:09 pm
so she announced 1 hour ago, almost 35 persons votes were registered supreme electoral counsel in turkey the initially results are quiet similar to the results we have. >> not similar. >> or the official results? >> we had two and a half hours they learned something about officially but now it's a little bit fitting. >> too early to celebrate for the akp party, you mean? >> people besides and then we should say something about it. >> okay. so let's say the results -- >> to talk about something let me ask you this question if the results, the current results are confirmed what would be the reaction from this? >> we have to wait today tonight
1:10 pm
or tomorrow's morning, our leaders will announce something. we shall wait. something about it let me ask you another question. critics of the opposition say you are divided and week and that's why you were not able to defeat we have to be a little bit silent. you know that. we were in a bad period. there was some bombing in akara. people were silent. so it was hard and contro versal period after june. it's a little bit risky period
1:11 pm
because of this thank you very much. a 7ier member of the republican people's party here in istanbul. now, the main opposition is always try to blame the akp party for consolidating the group on power. they say they have made now it's time perhaps for them to change their policies and try to accept the new reality did and also within the turkish opposition, maybe there is time to think of new strategies and perhaps move on with the new realities after this election. back to you in london. >> omar thank you very much. live for us there in istanbul in turkey we can see people on the streets in celebration.
1:12 pm
what a contrast perhaps compared to what we were just hearing there from omar. he was speaking to a member of the opposition in turkey. she was expressing some skepticism over this result. it shows an outright election victory. they perhaps weren't expecting such a strong showing in this election. nevertheless, this is what we appeared to have here a sense of skepticism from the opposition about this vote, that there may have been irregularities, questioning, whether it may have been free and fair in how it was conducted. perhaps those calls will grow louder. definitely a contrast when you think about that compared to scenes of celebration there in conia and the same in ankara as well. we will continue to bring you reaction to this election in turkey, the second general election in 5 months.
