talking about that same issue. have we reached a point where there are so many guns out there with so many loopholes in the system that it would fuel a black market of gun sales among anyone that would want to get them, regardless of how tough they crack down? >> i think the rate of political polarization is so extreme at the moment that even when the instinct for liberal-minded americans is oh, there's a tragic shooting, we need to make it more difficult for people to get guns in our society, on the other side of the aisle there are loud voices calling for more guns to be owned. each time there is a shooting there is a rush to buy more guns. you have record breaking sells of $500 million last year for smith and wesson and tern and ruger. and that goes to maintaining the
12:31 pm
same laws we have on the books which are quite lax. and the reality of purchasers these day is the market has expanded. in the past the people who bought guns were largely older tended to be white and male. now younger people women as well in increasing numbers and they are using those guns for recreation and target shooting and because a lot of them believe they require those firearms for their protection. >> ben thank you very much for being with us. standing by as we continue to await word from the west coast concerning any breaking news, any develop on the shooting that took place on the west coast. mike viqueira you are ground zero on the debate. is there now a concern in washington, d.c. that there is such a proliferation of guns that no matter what is done on
12:32 pm
capitol hill there would just be a black market where they could buy them off of the black market if they could get them. >> reporter: that has always been the argument of those opposed to gun control. that has been an argument for decades now. i think there's a recognition on the part of the president and policy makers that it's not going to be coming from washington. you look at an event like this, and you might expect one reaction and oftentimes you get another. people have made up their minds largely on this issue. when you see the grim, the grizzly, series of shootings just this year, when you think about everything that has happened from charleston to oregon to san bernardino and to the unspeakable and unthinkable crime that happened in connecticut at the elementary school. if that's not going to change the atmosphere in washington, if that's not going to push the debate in one direction or another, most likely as many people would expect a direction towards more gun laws and among
12:33 pm
the people that would expect that are the people that ben described going to and purchasing more guns because they anticipate that gun laws are going to becoming more strict in the wake of the events, there is a recognition on the part of the president, and he said so, this is going to have to come from voters. at the state and local level first of all, where there is some progress now. it has got to come from voters, state and local governments, passing laws, and look, with 37% of eligible voters showing up to vote for their members of senate or congress every two years, you know, you are going to get the people who vote on these issues who feel the most visceral -- have the most visceral feelings about these issues, and the people that have this closer to the top of the agenda, that is to say a voting issue, are those on the second
12:34 pm
amendment or the opponents of gun-control legislation. so it is yet to be seen whether that dynamic will change whether more people in support of gun restriction show up at the poles to reflect more of a main stream view towards guns, that is yet to be seen, and that is what the president is pleading for. >> mike thank you very much. again, to remind you, we are awaiting that news conference in california to begin. we are being told by that gentlemen that that news conference will begin approximately four minutes from now. we want to get you caught up as to where we stand right now in california. sadness and anger. authorities trying to figure out the motive behind the deadly shooting that occurred at th that - that -- social services center

investigation underway into that mass shooting at a county holiday party. police releasing the identities of the two suspects. we're trying to find out more about why the two suspects began to shoot, began to open fire inside that social services center. 14 people were killed. 17 injured. some of them according to authorities within the last two hours. critically injured. jennifer london is live in san bernardino at this hour. jennifer, you are an l.a. girl. what is the mood there as we await word from the sheriff's department. what do they want to know? what are they asking? >> reporter: well, the general mood here in san bernardino, del, anger, sadness, disbelief, so many people saying they can't believe their city was the scene of mass shooting. they say you see the reports all the time, because unfortunately it is becoming so common, but you never think it is going to happen in your city. and everyone wants to know why.
12:39 pm
what drove this young couple that are suspected of carrying out this mass shooting, what drove them to do this? that is the question that is on everyone's mind, and we are hoping to learn more at a press conference that is supposed to be started any moment now. but investigators have focused their attention on a home about ten miles to the east of san bernardino. they started investigating this home late yesterday afternoon. a tip lead them to this home, that is where they found the alleged two suspects. they gave them chase. that chase lead them back here to san bernardino, where the -- the two alleged shooters were gunned down by police. one officer by the way was injured. we're told his injuries are not life threatening. back to the house in redland, police have been there late into the evening. we believe they are still there. it is unclear now at this point, del, if the couple that is accused of carrying out this
12:40 pm
shooting, if the couple lived there or what exactly is their connection to this location. >> and this particular couple that we are talking about, leaving behind a 6-month-old child with the grandmother. but i want to talk to you about the loss of innocence for san bernardino. and when we saw those attacks in paris there was anger directed at political leadership. if they are angry in san bernardino, who are they angry at? >> reporter: i can't speak to how the community is feeling as a whole. we do know from hearing from witnesses yesterday and friends and family of loved ones involved in this shooting that yes, people are angry that there doesn't seem to be any traction, movement from washington to curve gun violence. everybody is saying something has to be done, certainly we know the debate is what does that actually look like? but when you talk about a loss of innocents that's absolutely right.
12:41 pm
because people here are saying how could this happen in san bernardino. it's a population of just over 200,000 people largely middle class, working city, about 60 miles east of los angeles. they do have a little bit of a history with gang violence, but they certainly never thought they would witness a mass shooting takes place here in their city. >> jennifer california has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, and yet these two people according to police were armed to the teeth, they had ak-47 long rifles, and semiautomatic handguns, is there a sense that even the laws on the books aren't doing enough to protect the people on the streets? >> reporter: one of the other big questions that we don't know the answer to yet, del is how did they obtain these weapons? because you are right, they had long guns, semi automatic hand guns. they were wearing masks.
12:42 pm
they were armed in protective gear. police describe it as they were dressed in tactical clothing. we do know the atf is trying to trace those weapons and find out just exactly how and where they obtained them. >> reporter: jennifer also in the aftermath of the shootings themselves the town was placed on lockdown the schools were closed. there was some talk that loma linda medical center might have been closed from a bomb threat. what do we know about those things? >> reporter: we know the lockdown for much of the city was lifted late yesterday afternoon -- and i'm going to stop there, because we can see some law enforcement officials walking up to the podium. i believe the press conference is about to begin. >> yes, this is the sheriff from san bernardino, california. >> [ inaudible ] chief police here in san bernardino, i also
12:43 pm
the sheriff and congressman and county support supervisor joining us as well. i want to start off by reiterating how incredibly tragic this is, and we have a lot of family that are clearly devastated by what happened here. and we need to be sensitive to that, and i want to put out to those families out there, that our prayers are with them, and we are here to support them any way we can. some updated numbers. same as yesterday, 14 people are confirmed dead in this incident. the number of wounded as risen from 17 to 21. they are being treated at various local hospitals. we were asked yesterday about the number of officers that responded. we are still compiling the total number of officers that responded here at 11:00 when the initial call went out. rough count right now is about 300 officers from local, county,
12:44 pm
state, and federal agencies that responded for the initial active shooter component of this, and helped deal with the crime scene here. many of those assets also moved and were part of the investigation in the officer-involved shooting that followed. here at the scene at the regional center what we have total is we believe the suspected when they entered fires somewhere between 65 and 75 rounds from their rifles at the scene. we did locate the one pipe -- there were actually three pipe bombs combined into one, that had a remote control car type of device that appears to have not have worked in this case. there were four 223 rifle magazines dropped by the suspects and left in there as evidence that has been recovered. i can confirm that the suspects were wearing the black-style tactical gear that we talked about yesterday.
12:45 pm
they were not wearing ballistic bullet-proof vests. what did they have tactical style vest that held equipment, magazines and ammunition, load bearing gear. the officer-involved shooting that took place, we talked about how that came to be. how we ended up at that point in the investigation and what we were following up on. on the shooting that occurred we have seven police agencies that were involved including our department, the sheriff's department, i think we had 14 of our police officers involved, and then various other agencies that were all part of the task force that had come to assist. we had 23 officers that were actually -- fired their weapons at the suspects. law enforcement fired approximately 380 rounds at the suspects. both were killed at the scene.
12:46 pm
the suspects were believed to have fired about 76 rival rounds at the officers. >> reporter: how in? >> 76 is the number we have right now. however, on their person, on their body and in the vehicle, they had over 1400, 223-caliber rounds that were available to them and over 200, 9-millimeter rounds as well. we talked about yesterday, they had the two, 223-assault-style weapons. >> reporter: 1400 on the -- >> 1400, 223 wounds. 200, 9-millimeter rounds on their person or immediately in the vehicle and available to them. we had two officers that were injured in that incident. one was a san bernardino police officer that sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg. he was taken to a local hospital
12:47 pm
last night. he is probably going to be released this morning if he has not already been released. i did visit with him in the hospital, he is in good spirits. we also as of this morning learned that there was a second deputy that was injured, sustained some cuts to his leg that we believe probably came from broken glass or shrapnel. the house in redlands that became part of the focus of the investigation. i will confirm that the search that took place revealed 12 pipe bomb type devices in that house or in the garage, and hundreds of tools, many of which could be used to construct ied's or pipe bombs, and in addition they had other material to have produced some additional bombs as well. there were another 2,000, 9-millimeter rounds found at the
12:48 pm
house, over 2500, 223-rounds, and -- 2500 and several hundred, 22-long rifle rounds that were found there. so with that, i'm here to talk about the specifics of the investigation. and what we discovered evidence wise. >> do you believe they were planning another attack? >> we don't know. clearly they were equipped and could have continued to do another attack. we intercepted them before that happened obviously. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> so the investigation is still going on, and i don't think we're prepared to talk about other people that we might be looking for. we are confident that the two people involved in the shooting here, are the two dead suspects he had at the scene, and we have no credible information to indicate there is an immediate threat to anybody in the area or region. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]?
12:49 pm
>> brian? >> reporter: the remote control car with the pipe bomb can you elaborate what that was. >> i'm not an expert on it. it's my understanding is that it was somehow three pipe bombs attached to this remote control car, and it was designed that the remote control device would trigger to set that device off. it was found in a bag that was there at the scene. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> i'm going to let the fbi address those questions. >> reporter: sir -- >> the go-pro is not confirmed. we do not have any information the suspects had any go-pros or any cameras of any sort on them. >> reporter: based on your interviews with all of your eyewitnesss, can you tell us what happened in the room, and do you still believe there was some dispute and they left and came back? >> we have people in the room that have indicated that the
12:50 pm
suspect was in the room during the early part of this meeting or party type event. it was a county public health christmas holiday-type gathering luncheon is what it was. he was part of that. he was there early on. and he left. we did have some initial information that he left under some kind of duress, or as if he was angry. he also has somebody else say he just kind of disappeared. we don't know where he went. so we don't know enough about that yet. >> reporter: do you have any motive? >> we still don't have a motive. >> reporter: were they targeting anyone in particular? >> the building this took place in, i'm sure you all have aerial views of what it is. this took place in the southern-most building on the property. the doors they entered were located on the east side. so they entered from that parking lot through the east
12:51 pm
doors, directly into the room. those doors were unlocked. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> well, they sprayed the room with bullets so i don't know if there was any one person that they targeted. they killed 14 people there. >> reporter: any idea of [ inaudible ] argument left and any idea [ inaudible ]? >> i meant to follow up on that question, and i failed to ask that today. yesterday we had information that it was anywhere from ten minutes to 30 minutes. i'll try to tie that up later in the day. >> reporter: it is hard to believe all of this was spontaneous. >> we said yesterday that there appears to be a degree of planning that went into this. nobody just gets upset at a party, goes home and puts together that kind of scheme or plan to do that. so there was some planning that went into this. >> reporter: please, sir, is there any indication of how long they have been stockpiling [ inaudible ] based on [ inaudible ]?
12:52 pm
>> i don't think we are far enough into the investigation to really be able to definitively say what the pattern has been, or what they have been doing over the last several months or years. that's a part we're still working on, though. >> reporter: any idea of a grudge against his coworkers? >> not that i'm aware of, but i think we'll probably have a comment from his employer to talk about those issues. >> reporter: if he was no longer a employee at the center, why was he invited back? >> it was my understanding he was still an employee of the count country. >> reporter: where did the guns come from? >> the two handguns were legally purchased by him. the rifles were not. we're following up on them. all four guns were legally purchased. >> reporter: [ inaudible ] did he have a record? >> there is no criminal record
12:53 pm
that we're aware of. >> reporter: we were told that [ inaudible ] license plate [ inaudible ] any idea on how it was acquired? >> it was a black ford execution, the big -- expedition, i'm sorry. it was a rental car. he rented it three or four days ago. it was due to be returned yesterday. that's why it had utah plates. >> reporter: [ inaudible ] travel overseas is there any indication that something -- >> i'll let the fbi discuss that. those are things that they are working on. >> reporter: chief have you been able to identify [ inaudible ]? >> so our plan today is we're going to do a morning press conference. the sheriff in the coroner's office is going to start releasing the names of the victims. we have been working to make notifications. so we will start to put those names out fairly soon, we'll
12:54 pm
probably try to get the pictures out and move the media closer to the scene, and then we'll do a press conference later on. but throughout the course of the day we anticipate to start releasing the names of the victims. >> reporter: were they all county employees? >> we don't know if they all were, several of them, we believe are. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> i read an article by one of the reporters in the press -- i'm sorry "the sun," this morning, and she talked about the resiliency of this community. and san bernardino has been beaten up with the bankruptcy, and economically this community has been hit hard, but this is a resilient community. we will survive this. we have had an enormous ground swell of support from our neighboring communities and well wishes that have come in from all over the place. this is a candlelight vigil, i
12:55 pm
believe at the stadium. and i think you'll see a tremendous amount of support. as far as the officers, from everything i have seen they are extraordinarily well, i'm incredibly proud of the way our folks responded, not only the initial response here, and the help that we got from our partners, but the way they engaged in that officer-involved shooting, that was nothing short of heroic. >> reporter: were your officers wearing body cams? >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> i think there is questions on whether they were california legal or not. we do not know at this point. but the four guns were purchased appeared to be legal purchase and appeared to be registered. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> none of our officers were
12:56 pm
wearing body cams. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> i know they had a 6-month-old child i don't know where she is. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> i don't think we have restrictions on the volumes of ammunition. >> reporter: anything on the ammunition [ inaudible ]? >> offhand i'm not specific aware of anything illegal. >> reporter: [ inaudible ] what you [ inaudible ] and who lived there? >> so the suspect and -- both suspects were listed on the rental agreement for the property. as i said yesterday i don't know that we can definitively say they were living there or elsewhere. the house became a focus of the investigation based on information we had from witnesses who identified him, and it was follow-up we had done connected to that person that took us to that house, lead us
12:57 pm
to that vehicle, which lead in the pursuit and shooting that happened. obviously once we were involved in that, the house became a primary focus. we cleared the house safely and that's when we discovered the other pipe bombs and i think some other computer evidence, cell phones things like that have been recovered from there. >> reporter: anything come out of that search that helped you? >> i think there are a number of things that we have obtained that have helped us. >> reporter: [ inaudible ] how many people were going in and out of that house other than the two people that lived there. >> reporter: we have heard the rumors that you heard. but we're still trying to a verify that. keep in mind, information is likely to change. i want to be as accurate as we
12:58 pm
possibly ask -- can, and a lot of that type of information ends up being hearsay, and i would like to avoid that. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> so there has been a number of electronic items from thumb drives to computers and cell phones that have been taken, i don't know that we have completed analysis yet. real quickly dave from the fbi has a few comments. >> reporter: chief was there any surveillance at the building? >> it is my understanding there was no specific surveillance that was inside the room where the shooting took place. we are in possession of surveillance evidence in the area, and we're still going over that. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> morning i'm the assist important director of the fbi in this charge in los angeles. i want to focus on two points, first off our hearts and prayers
12:59 pm
are with the families of the victims of this very heinous act. secondly, i ask you to be patient. we are trying to give you little bits as we can. as you can tell by this investigation and even the media response today, this is not your average investigation. we have multiple scenes, many victims, and it will take time. there are a tremendous number of assets and resources being applied to this investigation. my focus as a fact finder who works for an organization that is really fixated on facts is i would rather be slower and correct with the information that comes out to you than fast and incorrect. the integrity of this investigation is paramount as far as we're concerned absent other than taking care of the victims. we are employing a number of federal resources.
1:00 pm
we are continuing to work closely with our partners here. these resources are being applied for a number of reasons. i'll give you an example. we flew in a team from washington to do some reenactment, reconstruction of the crime scene, we have continued collecting evidence, and are continuing to collect evidence at the multiple scenes. we are going to fly evidence back to washington, d.c. today on a plane because we want expeditious analysis of that evidence. as far as the digital media that was asked about earlier, it is incredibly important, because we are trying to determine the motive. we do not yet know the motive. [ changing captioners ] irresponsible of me, and it would be way foo
