politicians take familiar positions after the massacre. a day after the massacre in california, we are learning about the people involved. the killers, a young couple with a 6-month-old daughter, the victims - 14 dead, more than 20 wounded. and the officers who arrived at the scene. tonight san bernardino is holding a memorial in the minor league baseball stadium. al jazeera's jennifer london is in san bernardino with the latest. a lot of discussion today about what the motive was. >> that's right. not a lot of answers. the facebook saying it's too early to speculate on the motive, stopping short of saying it was an act of terrorism. they say they will collect the

evidence, follow it and wait to draw conclusions. there are details emerging from the investigation showing that the young married couple was on a mission, and police say they may have wanted to carry out more attacks. [ sirens ] >> reporter: investigators are focussing on the crime scene at the inland regional center and the home in redlands california rented by suspects fenway pasyek and tashfe, n malic. both wore tactical gear, rifles and 1600 rounds of ammunition. >> the two handguns were purchased by him. the rifles were not. they are components we are following up. all four guns were legally purchased. >> investigators say 27-year-old

farook was an american born citizen, he was in touch with extremists on social mediaia. malik was on a visa. neither had a previous criminal record. police confirmed that in the home they rented, more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition were found. nearly a dozen pipe bombs and hundreds of tools they say could have been used to construct explosives. police say they believe the pair was ready to c carry out anothe attack. >> based on what we have seen and how they were equipped. there needed to be planning social media material has been flown to washington for analysis. >> the digital media is important. we are trying to determine the motive, we don't know the motive.

relating to coverage. we are seeing bags of ammunition. it is the black suf that they rented and used as the get away car. it is riddled with bullets. it was inside the car. where the two suspects died. >> jennifer london in san bernardino. we are learning the names of the 14 killed in the shooting. and who they were. they include a father of six children, a woman that fled iran to escape the persecution of christians, and a young woman who joined the san bernardino health department. >> police are trained to handle shootings, but the event are something nobody can ever truly prepare for. the first officer on the scene, lieutenant mike madden made the point. he gave a chilling point of what he found. we had every belief at that time that people had actively been

shot in the building. my goal was to assemble an entry team and enter into the building. the mind-set and training became indoctrinated in us after the columbine incident. that was the goal. we were on it, we wanted to stop further innocent people from being injured and possibly killed. there's three officers arrived. there's an approximate 2 minutes time laps from the time i got there. of the four initial responding officers. and the four of his went around the south side of the building. as we made our way around to the east side, it was immediately evident that the reports that we were getting were 100% true. they were victims who were clearly obviously deceased

outside of the conference room. and i relaid that information to the other responding officers. and again requested assistance. as we entered into the conference room, the situation was surreal. it was something that i don't think again we prepare for. and we talk about sensory overload. they try to throw everything at you, preparing you for dealing with that. what you are seeing, hearing, melling, and it was all that and more. the executive director of the los angeles council of america-islamic relations condep demed the a -- condemned the attacks almost immediately after the attacks. i asked why he addressed the situation so soon. >> no one should feel

responsible because they look like the suspects or have the same ethnic or religious background. we should be gel gent enough to know that every bern is responsible for his or her own crimes. whether ifs the incident or the one in san bernardino. the reality is that we live in a ward that is influenced by islamaphobes. as americans muslims, they felt it was a need to reach out to the fellow americans, letting them know that all of us are morning because of incident. there's not a problem that pits muslims or christians or jews, this is a problem putting civilized tolerant irrational people, whether they are muslim, christians, jew's atheist against those that are rational bigoted or violent.

>> san bernardino residents have been used to negative headlines about their city, it was known as the largest city to file for bankruptcy until detroit. we report on the city's struggles, and how it is coping with the latest tragedy: . >> this is a tough town. the people are sadly familiar with violence, with street violence. gun play and bodies in the street. of course, what happened in the attack on wednesday raises a whole thing to a new level of trauma that's been inflicted on the community. once a middle class enclave, it's the poorest city of its size in california, a city that declared municipal bankruptcy. the pastor tells us 44% of residents are on some form of public assistance. a lot of hurting people, frustrated people, hopeless

people, and a lot of people that have been in generational poverty. he's been a pastor here for 20 years in a community accustomed to street violence, generated by drugs, gangs and the stresses of policy. >> there's traj anies that don't always get televised. so, i mean, it's feeling unsafe. but you have to survive. >> wednesday massacre had a jolt. >> we'll have to learn a paradigm. not to get jaded or depressed. to stay optimistic. >> everyone has hatred or whatever prejudices. for the way you speak, for what you believe. i think it's time for us to cast the things aside. and look at each other for what we are. >> for the staff at the loema

linda medical center, where many of the victims were treated, it's not quite business as usual, but it's not a challenge. >> we have had struggles with gun violence, we struggled with gang violence. this year we had eight shootings, not more than half a mile from the institution. >> but this was a mass killing, a planned coordinated attack on innocence, echos of paris, beirut, sandy hook. in a southern californian community under pressure. they have been beaten up with bankruptcy, and economically it has been hit hard. >> we will survive this. >> god loves us, we should love others. if someone shared that with the shooters, and if they had bought into it maybe yesterday would not have happened. >> antonio, i talked with mike

morrell, the state senator that represents the area. he says that people here are stunned by what happened on wednesday, very subdued and drawing a lot of strength from all the well-wishers coming into the company around the world. >> as san bernardino struggles to comprehend what happened residents are sharing their stories. melissa chan talked to some. >> reporter: the day after, stunned and dazed residents of san bernardino. including some that saw the drama play out too close to home. this man and his wife were driving back to their neighbourhood when the attack happened. >> she called me. i'm coming home. i'm turning at the intersection, and everything unfolds on the phone, in front of me. >> his wife worked two blocks away from the initial attack,

and matter the gun fire. she got home to hear more gunfirp. the house was half a block from where the shooters stopped the get away s.u.v. . >> i don't see how someone can commit this time of crime. they had a 6-month-old baby. >> the wounded were sent to hospital. family members started to step forward to speak to journalists. >> i think she'll be fine. the pain is the main problem. and an ugly scar. she'll have it fixed. she will be fine. so are the other families. >> her daughter 22 years old was shot in the stomach. this man's son survived. >> it sounds terrible to have your son shot five times, it's a blessing, a blessing because

a new review of the embattled secret service calls it an agency in crisis. the report from the house oversight and government reform committee says scandals damaged the agency, those include a prostitution scandal and breaches of the white house fence. president obama has confidence in the agency's director. south africa's supreme court convicted olympic sprinter oscar pistorius of murder. the double amputee star was on parole after killing his girlfriend reeva steenkamp in 2013. a judge sentenced pistorius to inculpable homicide. prosecutors appealed the decision arguing fistorius should have been convicted of murder. reeva steenkamp's mother called is a victory not only for her

domestic issues could be the starting factor. south carolina's senator said the stand on abortion alienates female voters. >> it will be about the nominee of the republican party telling a woman she was raped. you have to carry the child of a rapist. and said donald trump's harsh words on hispanics are destroying chances to win back the white house. >> there was an issue not brought up apt the forum, even in the aftermath of the attack. none of candidates mentioned gun or gun control congress is set to send president obama the first beel to repeal the affordable care act. the senate passed a bill to unfund the health care law and unfund planned parenthood.

arkansas is trying to keep the countries that supply lethal injection drugs secret. a judge ordered them to turn over the names by noon tomorrow. the attorney-general filed an emergency motion to stop the order pending an appeal. the county court judge who issued the ruling said drug suppliers do not have a right to be free from criticism. protestors in miles per hour -- minneapolis. officers removed tents and tables and arrested some protesters for refusing to follow police orders. the demonstration began after demar clark was shot and killed by a police officer last month changes to the u.s.
