climate talks in paris. in syria these are the main developments so far hundreds of fighters are leaving the devastated city of homs with their families as part of a cease-fire deal between the opposition and the government. trying to find an united position to negotiate an end to the fighting in the united states the secretary of defense has afternooned those same sunni arab states to do more to combat the armed group calling itself isil. >> turkey must do more to control it's often porous border. saudi arabia and the gulf states join the air part of the

coalition in the early days but only the air part. and in this past week i personally reached out to my counterparts in 40 countries around the world, in the coalition and asked them to contribute more. in many cases contribute much more to enhancing the fight against isil. >> well, the leaders are meeting in riyadh with syria high on the agenda. king salman said that his country remained committed to finding a solution in syria and representatives also meeting in riyadh for separate talks. >> regarding the crisis, in order to help in finding a political solution according to the geneva accord. the international community has a joint responsibility in

fighting terrorism and extrem extremism, we will continue our efforts with coordination and cooperation with our sisterlily countries and friendly countries because our islam rejects terrorism and extremism. >> let's speak now to rosalind jordan. she joins us live now from washington, d.c. what are they telling you about their expectations in riyadh? >> well, the obama administration has been concerned for some time about the fact that airstrikes have been carried out by the u.s. themselves not by the other members of the coalition and certainly not by the members of the gcc in any appreciable numbers since this time about a year ago. and so they're very concerned about the perception especially with the rising concerns about
2:04 pm
the potential for civilian death in these airstrikes that this could be perceived as an u.s.-only operation, and not one that is being taken out by the members of the coalition in which 65 countries are taking part. so this is really a chance to try to convince the members of the gcc and other middle east countries that the fight against isil is not just one for the u.s. but for the entire global community and certainly for those countries in the region particularly since isil has tried to use some parts of the sunni tenants to justify its existence and it's behavior. the idea by calling out, as it were, the gcc before the senate armed services committee is to really bring home the point that this is a fight where every country really has a stake and really ought to be putting more

energy into trying to combat isil. >> and how significant are these comments from ash carter that countries in the gulf need to be doing more to combat isil? >> they are significant, maryam. that's because the u.s. has been concerned that even though the situation in yemen is a troubling situation, the efforts of the president mr. hadi to try to stay in power and to try to push back against the houthis, whom the u.s. believes are being supported by iran, they believe that the saudi-led coalition has essentially been distracted by the situation and yemen has been putting more of its energies into one country's civil war for lack of a better phrase, rather than dealing with this regional threat, one that threatens to become a very global threat. so it's really an effort to try to basically have the debate on the public stage and not just

have it through diplomatic channels. >> roslind jordan, washington, d.c. thank you very much. joining us now is chairman of the london school of democraticseconomics, this is a critical time for countries meeting in riyadh, roslind was mentioning lebanon, you have iraq, yemen and isil at the forefront of western leaders. what are you watching for from this meeting? >> most important is yemen. as you know, saudi arabia has been leading a coalition for the last nine months. against the houthi in yemen. this particular war is a war of attrition. no majored break through begins the houthi. more than 6,000 people have been killed. the country's infrastructure has been destroyed. people are on the verge of starvation, and al-qaida in the peninsula has expanded, it is building an impasse. it has taken all the cities.
