both politically and militarily what they need to do to prepare for a potential escalation of all of this statement came out just after that meeting we had a bit earlier in craig's report about what the president himself had to say but this statement condemning north korea's provocation but it also made the strong point that the president had been briefed about this launch both before and off that it took place and a he on move missile has been launched by south korea in response to it now that missile was launched from the east coast of south korea it was launched and it took off for two hundred fifty kilometers it flew which is the same distance between it and where the north korean missile to go from it didn't get far towards north korea they didn't think the north korean missile was actually in at a country but they were trying to make the point that they have the ability with their own missiles here in south korea to target a launch site immediately after a launch as happened on friday morning in an exercise but also just before one

back to the north korea crisis stephen naggy is a senior associate professor of politics at the international christian university he joins us on skype from tokyo and we appreciate your time so much. let's talk about what what are japan's practical options to actually defend itself in a situation like this. well at this stage it's to pan has a few different options in terms of protecting itself one is a terrestrial base a just system and the second is the sea bass navy ages these are systems that are meant to knock down missiles that have been launched in japan and now they're very sophisticated missile systems and they can hit down up to twenty one missiles at the time the challenge is when we're dealing with an intercontinental intercontinental ballistic missile or intermediate range missile it's dealing with the altitude apogee as well as the speed of the missiles coming in and into japan

and now these are both challenges that we don't know that if the ages system can. effectively protect the japanese the second option is most like the adoption of a fad like system and that that life system is particularly meant to knock down intercontinental ballistic missiles but they haven't been purchased by the japanese yet so i guess you know this is similar to what south korea has yes they haven't purchased them yet but that most likely will be the next option if the north koreans continue to. develop their missile technologies and in particular launch them over japan in their testing process to strengthen their defense to defensive capabilities at this point the talk always seems to come back to that the few countries that deal with north korea somehow tightening restraints on them and that all that don't make a difference do you still think that that is a viable option to to have any type of the fact on north korea. at this stage you

know the north koreans have been under sanctions and they've become progressively heavy over the past twenty or thirty years and they haven't been affected in the celebrating the elements of both missiles and nuclear technologies as we've seen in fact over the past six months since the trumpet ministration was inaugurated since mr trump was voted in we've seen an acceleration in both the number of missiles but also the types of missiles they range in the quality it's clear that sanctions are going to affect the regime they have the ability to harness twenty million north koreans to put to work to use their resources to keep the regime in power and that seems to be their objective to prevent the toppling of the regime either through a decaf the patient attack or surprise attack by the united states or some other means do you think when you mention it trying to ministration in there's been an increase in the state think there's
