been recovered but children and teachers are missing. rescuers worked into the night the woman in red walking out after being asked to identify a body as well as. it's a school in the south of the city a private school where a significant part of the building collapsed unfortunately small children from year one year two of primary school some from the secondary school have died the quake struck at lunchtime on tuesday causing thousands to run to safety. the terror and devastation captured in the moments afterwards. a mexican's assess the wreckage across the capital dozens of buildings have collapsed. and the extent of the disaster is becoming clear homes destroyed flats and businesses badly damaged two million people without electricity and a nation again in mourning after another major earthquake shook the country earlier this month. phone lines are also down and smokers have been warned not to light up

thanks very much. ok let's take a live update on another one of our big stories for you here on al-jazeera hurrican maria just making landfall in the u.s. territory of puerto rico in the caribbean the category four storm is packing winds of up to two hundred fifty kilometers an hour in rio has already caused extensive damage on the islands of what and it's the second maximum strength atlantic storm of the season. swept through the caribbean on the same track earlier this month and agalloch is our correspondent joining us live from san juan in puerto rico andy i'm going to talk slowly and loudly cause it looks like it's really really noisy where you are what are you seeing and what are you hearing. right peter it's a pretty terrifying situation here in san juan the entire team that was woken up at about four thirty in the morning the whole hotel was shaking it felt like we're not

out to sea but let me just show you some of the pictures here in san juan as hurricane maria makes its way across this island if you look at that apartment building just that of course we saw all those the windows there the glass windows getting blown out actually they were sucked out and that's one of the most terrifying things about a storm like this is the sound and the fury the sound of breaking glass the sound of sheets of metal as that ripped up the tops of buildings and strewn across this city power looks like it is out at the moment we still have power at the hotel but you can see some one visibility is low but there are no lights here and this is going to go on for hours and hours remember the eye of the storm made landfall south east of us on the coastline down there so there is some distance between us and the eye of the storm but this is pretty terrifying in the hotel that guests have been evacuated to a lower floor there is no doubt on the streets here but i can tell you i fear for

the people of puerto rico right now i fear for the people of the u.s. virgin islands who were hit by hurricane maria in the early hours of the morning and there are some gusts of wind here one just picking up right now and i couldn't tell you how strong we are but i think you can probably see that kind of damage that is being wrought on puerto rico right now more than five hundred shelters were opened in the past few days people are taking this seriously i think they really have to because i can't think of anything but catastrophe is about to befall puerto rico with the sheer strength of hurricane maria that we're seeing here in san juan right now andy is following we're being told exactly the same track as. raised a lot of buildings to the ground it destroyed a lot of structures so the dead body from. is in situ just the. i mean that the hazardous element of surviving this is increased because there are so many things literally lying around on the ground that can get whipped up and can kill people.

well that's the big the big issue here i mean the streets obviously are deserted people are going to shelters but there's flying glass is flying corrugated sheets of metal flying construction poles it's an extremely dangerous situation that's something puerto rico hasn't faced since the 1930's when i got three four storms that hit this island but it really is peter i have to tell you i've covered a lot of storms but this is intense this is going to go on for quite some time possibly into the evening i don't know what we're going to find one says storm has passed but i don't think that it's going to be anything else except for utter devastation. andy thanks very much she'll keep us posted i know but in the meantime thank you. ok the kenyan supreme court handing down his judgment pretty much in real time today about the an old presidential election correspondent stephanie decker joins us live now from nairobi steph what's the judge or the judges what are

a similar tectonic position to the most recent earthquake but it is several hundred kilometers away so although it's similar it's not directly related to mexico city mexico is well known for earthquakes they've had huge earthquakes before there was a big one back in ninety five how prepared are they the mexicans are really quite well prepared as you said there was a very large earthquake a magnitude eight back in one thousand nine hundred five which unfortunate killed a lot of people and subsequent to that the mexican authorities have been making sure that they are prepared for when the next large earthquake will strike because mexico city's particularly vulnerable to earthquakes it's built on an old lake bed. sediments in that lake bed actually amplify the earthquake waves so

the city itself gets intensified shaking in an earthquake the original tremor we're told with this earthquake was quite prolonged is that significant in terms of damage. yes or no the the tremor i believe last is about eighty seconds or so far more important is the depth of the earthquake this earthquake was some fifty kilometers below the surface if it had been shallower then the shaking would have been far more significant and we would be looking at potentially far more in the way of casualties when you talk about far more in the way of casualties just just explain for us any particular problems to do with this quake in this area given what you've just been telling us about mexico city and what lies underneath it.

well the earthquake back in ninety nine eighty five was a i shall or earthquake and although. that earthquake was about thirty times more powerful than the nys one as well so we have both a large earthquake and a shallow earthquake the shallower the earthquake the more surface waves of the generated and not causes far more shaking of a particular area they said the lake sediments. quite waves and we saw back in one thousand nine hundred five that different buildings vibrate at different frequencies and the ones that were between six to eight stories high were particularly violently shaken shaken but then as a consequence that was a lot of damage and a much higher number of deaths around five thousand deaths from that earthquake
