feeling victorious they have won a thirteen percent of the vote in this german election clearly delighted saying we are here to stay earlier of course we have from the german chancellor angela merkel who claimed a mandate to form a new government with a new coalition party so let's bring you right up to date with the latest news in from germany so exit polls in germany's elections putting angela merkel and her party on course for a fourth term in office they also show that a far right party winning seats in parliament for the first time since the nazis were defeated in the second world war so those polls show you the figures they project that anglo merkel center right christian democratic union party won a thirty three point three percent of the vote giving them two hundred and twenty seats their main rival and current coalition partner the center left social democrats led by martin schultz got around twenty one percent of the vote or one

hundred thirty seven seats but as we've been saying the biggest change to germany's political scene is this the far right and anti alternative for germany or a.f.d. party getting thirteen point two percent of the vote translating into eighty seven seats the three other main parties one between nine and ten percent of the vote but could find themselves of course in power as part of a coalition. well s.p.d. says the result is a heavy defeat for them and it will go into opposition rather than remain in a grand coalition with merkel's party the mainstream parties of also ruled out talking to the d. about forming a coalition with well it is the first time in almost six decades that an overtly nationalist party has been able to enter germany's hanumant he was founded just four years ago as an anti euro force its manifesto included a pledge to ban all mosques and criminalize people wearing the veil. right let's get thoughts now correspondent in berlin dominic casey who's been listening in to

all the events and indeed the speech by the german chancellor angela merkel in the last half an hour or so that's all tell us a little bit of what what i'm going to merkel had to say she acknowledged didn't say the rise of the f.t. . yes she certainly did and she made the very clear point that she felt that her party have to try to enact policies from now on in the next coalition that she will try to form to win back some voters from her party who she believes has deserted have deserted the c.d.u. to go to the a f t a far right party as you say it's worth making the point this is not the first time since the second world war overtly nationalist party has won seats in a form of the german parliament but certainly this is the first time that a far right party has won so many votes and therefore so many seats proportionally in the parliament one thing the anger merkel did not touch on was who she would

govern with the point to make here is as you say with the social democrats ruling themselves out as potential coalition partners they go into opposition martin schulz the losing lead candidate for the social democrats he said he will not stand down even though he has led his party to one of its worst ever electoral defeats the question now and it's a question that i'm going to michael did not address is who she will govern with everyone here and everyone all the media analysis immediately after this exit poll came out saying well jim a cure is the word on people's lips why because jamaica the colors of the flag of jamaica are the colors of the parties who might emerge as a coalition black for angela merkel's christian democrats yellow gold for the free democratic the liberal party and green obviously for the green party with that is something that will be hammered out through weeks of deliberations negotiations between the parties the question though is what does germany make of this result for the alternative for germany and what whether this is a victory for them of in. treif americal what is the the synopsis as it as it were

of this result with me to discuss all that is is all i think from rasmussen global a company a firm that operates under the aegis of the former nato secretary general anders fogh rasmussen well mr duncan we have the results it seems as though it's a win for matthew but her policies lost ten percent compared to the last time how do you read this election you know it definitely so she looks at the first side as the clear majority winner but if you look into the details if you look into the results so she actually is the big loser of this election. and this also makes her as a coalition partner quite on the track to have to her new potential coalitions partners because she always managed to ruin them in a way as we have now seen with the s.p.d. and. so in this regard i think she of course will use this as an opportunity off and try to play this from a position of strength as for the same time it will be much more challenging for her to build a coalition in the first place because she's tested deal with two very different

parties with very different cultures and all to very different party member cultures there's a very left wing in the green party that's a very conservative even close to nationalist wing in the f.d.p. so therefore it's much harder i think for her right now in this fourth and final tour maybe for final term she didn't say so but this is what a lot of people are expecting and at the same time she had not just to build a coalition and to bring this coalition through the next four years at the same time she also has to deal with the question if she's resigning by the end actually who will take up the party and this will be a big challenge actually to bring the c.d.u. back to the forty percent she which she mentioned actually was the the aim in the first place the object of choice one of the policies she referred to directly in her speech was the alternative for germany that i have to say and she sent that then the goal for her party is to try to win back some of the votes is. who've deserted the christian democrats who've gone to the a.f.p.

that i have to in germany the question is what does this this this result for the f.t. what does it mean for german democracy to have potentially one in seven of the parliamentarians and people in the new going to start being a far right party opposed to refugees refugee culture opposed to islam with very tough views on immigration yeah it will definitely change the tone within the bonus because this is a party which claims for themselves they give people on the street a voice and so we can imagine something like we see with donald trump in the us or they will of course they they are seeking for the scandal it's part of they are party tactics they don't deal really with political concept they didn't present any kind of a trinity of party policy concept. or for the future of germany their tactics was just actually to oppose what the established parties presented so therefore it will be interesting to see how the rest of the parties and i think all

of them all the other five will kind of build a major coalition to oppose and to contain this party and hopefully to get them out for the next time but i think we also have to acknowledge that this is part of german reality that these people are now represented in the in the parliament and it's part of democracy but they have the right to speak to express their views and then they have to deal with a final question and briefly if you will what does this mean for the social democrats they were in coalition these past four years and eight twelve years ago they were in coalition again and each time they've been in coalition with the christian democrats it has cost them at the following election we know mr schultz says he will not step down we know they will go into opposition but with just twenty percent of the votes being won this time around where do they go next i think they have to reinvent them in the opposition so therefore this was the only consequence that a lot of people could see and very consequential that. announced this in the first

place right after the announcement of the first exit polls. there will i think kind of a reform of the leadership so maybe we will see a much younger leadership in the next two years maybe there's a transformation period the question is the fate of martin short will he be the opposition leader will he just remain party chair this is totally open but it was interesting to see in their first press they meant that they that there was a feeling of self confidence they call themselves the block of the wall for democracy against the our fifty's you can see all parties are referring to the of the of the of the already change the tone and change the logic of the policy of the wooden stock in parliament you. look at thank you very much so you have a situation here in which angela merkel leads the party which will have the most in more seats than any other party in the bundestag but opposite her in the other parts of the and the other side of the chamber will be a loud voice of

a party who slogans amongst others have been met most back in germany which means merkel must go clearly merkel will not go she will lead the next government whatever political color it has although many people as i say think it will have the colors of the flag of jamaica but she will know that her party has lost ten percent in winning this election and forming a coalition will be difficult but the question will be whether there is the will to create this coalition and obviously we'll be following all the developments that emerge this evening and in the weeks to come as that coalition gets thrashed out as it were back to you first interesting times dominick dunne that came in but in for us thanks so much with me again here in the studio the let's talk about the a f d party the overtly nationalist party far right party whatever you want to call them they oversee a scene of all the headlines of the moment thirteen percent that had twenty percent of the votes going. with then but when we look at what's happened in the last two

years there are some people who were saying that she's surprised the f.t. didn't actually get more votes this time around i think it's very important to keep things in perspective when analyzing the entry to the bundestag so of course in twenty fifteen you had over a million asylum seekers and refugees come to germany and the f.t. which used to be an anti euro zone bailout policy then became this anti refugee anti immigration party and its rise has been very much accentuated by the fact that you had this huge change in german society so the fact that there are thirteen percent yes you know it's a kick back reaction to what's happened in german society but the other side other side of the coin is that a million refugees and asylum seekers came to germany and they're kind of being integrated into society millions of germans are helping them learning the german language trying to help them get jobs so it's not as bad as some might think given the huge change that has faced germany with the refugee crisis which means the gay f.t. may end up facing

a battle to stay relevant as the years go all over the next next couple of years it would be interesting to see what impact they're actually going to have within parliament itself absolutely all be very interesting to see if they have any sticking power because what's already become apparent is that all of the other parties have say they will not work with the f.t. and that will certainly be the case all of the other parties were on side with merkel when it came to refugee policy and i think that a lot of the public as well for a lot of the public the a.f.d. is toxic every time there's an a.f.p. rally or a speech you only need to go so far to see all the counter protesters and i think for a lot of german voters who are very aware of their identity in the world you know the fact that the f.t. did win seats in the bundestag will galvanize them to show that the a.f.p. does not speak for germany because inevitably they will know that this will grab headlines around the world and a quick thought about the coalition that anglo-american now has to form it could take a matter of weeks couldst but it's you know you pretty much all set. it's going to make a coalition or it could take

a matter of months coalition building is the name of the game in germany i think that. both merkel and the s.p.d. did not want to go into another grand coalition because the s.p.d. in particular want to be the voice of opposition so the jamaica coalition is something that's already been bandied around for the last few weeks when you're looking at the polls so it isn't actually a huge surprise and in fact it might be merkel's preferred option rather than going into a grand coalition with the s.p.d. again good to see an animal in the coming hours and i have plenty. now iran has joined turkey in putting on a show of force near its border with iraq ahead of monday's historic kurdish referendum on independence from iraq iran's revolutionary guard began a military exercise in its own northwestern kurdish region on the eve of that. it is also closed its airspace to all flights in and out of iraq because at the request of the government in baghdad iran turkey and iraq have warned of
