being in opposition in order to make sure that germany is equipped for the future that's what we've been elected for ladies and gentleman. and our first task. i notice this new news coverage. we we can tell all the other parties only talk about people but the f.t. was elected for the positions the conscience that's what our voters gave us the confidence for and the first thing that we would do is to. keep our promise. we will initiate an inquiry about the chancellor angela merkel.
8:01 pm
this inquiry will focus on the breaches and the breaches of law of the chancellor that is also what we were elected for. isn't. we are here to stay so letters take take up our mandate with humility and care. and all future m.p.'s be aware of your responsibility. we owe the people who voted for us and we are the country that we will deliver thank you very much. so there we have a press conference by the far right group the f.t.
8:02 pm
feeling victorious they have won a thirteen percent of the vote in this german election clearly delighted saying we are here to stay earlier of course we have from the german chancellor angela merkel who claimed a mandate to form a new government with a new coalition party so let's bring you right up to date with the latest news in from germany so exit polls in germany's elections putting angela merkel and her party on course for a fourth term in office they also show that a far right party winning seats in parliament for the first time since the nazis were defeated in the second world war so those polls show you the figures they project that anglo merkel center right christian democratic union party won a thirty three point three percent of the vote giving them two hundred and twenty seats their main rival and current coalition partner the center left social democrats led by martin schultz got around twenty one percent of the vote or one
8:03 pm
hundred thirty seven seats but as we've been saying the biggest change to germany's political scene is this the far right and anti alternative for germany or a.f.d. party getting thirteen point two percent of the vote translating into eighty seven seats the three other main parties one between nine and ten percent of the vote but could find themselves of course in power as part of a coalition. well s.p.d. says the result is a heavy defeat for them and it will go into opposition rather than remain in a grand coalition with merkel's party the mainstream parties of also ruled out talking to the d. about forming a coalition with well it is the first time in almost six decades that an overtly nationalist party has been able to enter germany's hanumant he was founded just four years ago as an anti euro force its manifesto included a pledge to ban all mosques and criminalize people wearing the veil. right let's get thoughts now correspondent in berlin dominic casey who's been listening in to
8:04 pm
all the events and indeed the speech by the german chancellor angela merkel in the last half an hour or so that's all tell us a little bit of what what i'm going to merkel had to say she acknowledged didn't say the rise of the f.t. . yes she certainly did and she made the very clear point that she felt that her party have to try to enact policies from now on in the next coalition that she will try to form to win back some voters from her party who she believes has deserted have deserted the c.d.u. to go to the a f t a far right party as you say it's worth making the point this is not the first time since the second world war overtly nationalist party has won seats in a form of the german parliament but certainly this is the first time that a far right party has won so many votes and therefore so many seats proportionally in the parliament one thing the anger merkel did not touch on was who she would
8:05 pm
govern with the point to make here is as you say with the social democrats ruling themselves out as potential coalition partners they go into opposition martin schulz the losing lead candidate for the social democrats he said he will not stand down even though he has led his party to one of its worst ever electoral defeats the question now and it's a question that i'm going to michael did not address is who she will govern with everyone here and everyone all the media analysis immediately after this exit poll came out saying well jim a cure is the word on people's lips why because jamaica the colors of the flag of jamaica are the colors of the parties who might emerge as a coalition black for angela merkel's christian democrats yellow gold for the free democratic the liberal party and green obviously for the green party with that is something that will be hammered out through weeks of deliberations negotiations between the parties the question though is what does germany make of this result for the alternative for germany and what whether this is a victory for them of in. treif americal what is the the synopsis as it as it were
8:06 pm
of this result with me to discuss all that is is all i think from rasmussen global a company a firm that operates under the aegis of the former nato secretary general anders fogh rasmussen well mr duncan we have the results it seems as though it's a win for matthew but her policies lost ten percent compared to the last time how do you read this election you know it definitely so she looks at the first side as the clear majority winner but if you look into the details if you look into the results so she actually is the big loser of this election. and this also makes her as a coalition partner quite on the track to have to her new potential coalitions partners because she always managed to ruin them in a way as we have now seen with the s.p.d. and. so in this regard i think she of course will use this as an opportunity off and try to play this from a position of strength as for the same time it will be much more challenging for her to build a coalition in the first place because she's tested deal with two very different
8:07 pm
parties with very different cultures and all to very different party member cultures there's a very left wing in the green party that's a very conservative even close to nationalist wing in the f.d.p. so therefore it's much harder i think for her right now in this fourth and final tour maybe for final term she didn't say so but this is what a lot of people are expecting and at the same time she had not just to build a coalition and to bring this coalition through the next four years at the same time she also has to deal with the question if she's resigning by the end actually who will take up the party and this will be a big challenge actually to bring the c.d.u. back to the forty percent she which she mentioned actually was the the aim in the first place the object of choice one of the policies she referred to directly in her speech was the alternative for germany that i have to say and she sent that then the goal for her party is to try to win back some of the votes is. who've deserted the christian democrats who've gone to the a.f.p.
8:08 pm
that i have to in germany the question is what does this this this result for the f.t. what does it mean for german democracy to have potentially one in seven of the parliamentarians and people in the new going to start being a far right party opposed to refugees refugee culture opposed to islam with very tough views on immigration yeah it will definitely change the tone within the bonus because this is a party which claims for themselves they give people on the street a voice and so we can imagine something like we see with donald trump in the us or they will of course they they are seeking for the scandal it's part of they are party tactics they don't deal really with political concept they didn't present any kind of a trinity of party policy concept. or for the future of germany their tactics was just actually to oppose what the established parties presented so therefore it will be interesting to see how the rest of the parties and i think all
8:09 pm
of them all the other five will kind of build a major coalition to oppose and to contain this party and hopefully to get them out for the next time but i think we also have to acknowledge that this is part of german reality that these people are now represented in the in the parliament and it's part of democracy but they have the right to speak to express their views and then they have to deal with a final question and briefly if you will what does this mean for the social democrats they were in coalition these past four years and eight twelve years ago they were in coalition again and each time they've been in coalition with the christian democrats it has cost them at the following election we know mr schultz says he will not step down we know they will go into opposition but with just twenty percent of the votes being won this time around where do they go next i think they have to reinvent them in the opposition so therefore this was the only consequence that a lot of people could see and very consequential that. announced this in the first
8:10 pm
place right after the announcement of the first exit polls. there will i think kind of a reform of the leadership so maybe we will see a much younger leadership in the next two years maybe there's a transformation period the question is the fate of martin short will he be the opposition leader will he just remain party chair this is totally open but it was interesting to see in their first press they meant that they that there was a feeling of self confidence they call themselves the block of the wall for democracy against the our fifty's you can see all parties are referring to the of the of the of the already change the tone and change the logic of the policy of the wooden stock in parliament you. look at thank you very much so you have a situation here in which angela merkel leads the party which will have the most in more seats than any other party in the bundestag but opposite her in the other parts of the and the other side of the chamber will be a loud voice of
8:11 pm
a party who slogans amongst others have been met most back in germany which means merkel must go clearly merkel will not go she will lead the next government whatever political color it has although many people as i say think it will have the colors of the flag of jamaica but she will know that her party has lost ten percent in winning this election and forming a coalition will be difficult but the question will be whether there is the will to create this coalition and obviously we'll be following all the developments that emerge this evening and in the weeks to come as that coalition gets thrashed out as it were back to you first interesting times dominick dunne that came in but in for us thanks so much with me again here in the studio the let's talk about the a f d party the overtly nationalist party far right party whatever you want to call them they oversee a scene of all the headlines of the moment thirteen percent that had twenty percent of the votes going. with then but when we look at what's happened in the last two
8:12 pm
years there are some people who were saying that she's surprised the f.t. didn't actually get more votes this time around i think it's very important to keep things in perspective when analyzing the entry to the bundestag so of course in twenty fifteen you had over a million asylum seekers and refugees come to germany and the f.t. which used to be an anti euro zone bailout policy then became this anti refugee anti immigration party and its rise has been very much accentuated by the fact that you had this huge change in german society so the fact that there are thirteen percent yes you know it's a kick back reaction to what's happened in german society but the other side other side of the coin is that a million refugees and asylum seekers came to germany and they're kind of being integrated into society millions of germans are helping them learning the german language trying to help them get jobs so it's not as bad as some might think given the huge change that has faced germany with the refugee crisis which means the gay f.t. may end up facing
8:13 pm
a battle to stay relevant as the years go all over the next next couple of years it would be interesting to see what impact they're actually going to have within parliament itself absolutely all be very interesting to see if they have any sticking power because what's already become apparent is that all of the other parties have say they will not work with the f.t. and that will certainly be the case all of the other parties were on side with merkel when it came to refugee policy and i think that a lot of the public as well for a lot of the public the a.f.d. is toxic every time there's an a.f.p. rally or a speech you only need to go so far to see all the counter protesters and i think for a lot of german voters who are very aware of their identity in the world you know the fact that the f.t. did win seats in the bundestag will galvanize them to show that the a.f.p. does not speak for germany because inevitably they will know that this will grab headlines around the world and a quick thought about the coalition that anglo-american now has to form it could take a matter of weeks couldst but it's you know you pretty much all set. it's going to make a coalition or it could take
8:14 pm
a matter of months coalition building is the name of the game in germany i think that. both merkel and the s.p.d. did not want to go into another grand coalition because the s.p.d. in particular want to be the voice of opposition so the jamaica coalition is something that's already been bandied around for the last few weeks when you're looking at the polls so it isn't actually a huge surprise and in fact it might be merkel's preferred option rather than going into a grand coalition with the s.p.d. again good to see an animal in the coming hours and i have plenty. now iran has joined turkey in putting on a show of force near its border with iraq ahead of monday's historic kurdish referendum on independence from iraq iran's revolutionary guard began a military exercise in its own northwestern kurdish region on the eve of that. it is also closed its airspace to all flights in and out of iraq because at the request of the government in baghdad iran turkey and iraq have warned of
8:15 pm
consequences if the referendum goes ahead or the president of iraq's kurdish regional government massoud barzani says officials in baghdad haven't lived up to the promises they made to the kurds. they have been continuing in threatening and humiliate you know people the state that we agreed on should have been a state based on citizenship federalism pluralism multiculturalism and democracy but unfortunately the state we have right now in iraq is a theocratic sectarian state. and iraq's prime minister had this message for kurdish voters. i want to speak clearly with our dear kurdish people most of the problems in your region are local and not coming from baghdad the call of secession will only make the crisis of economic and financial difficulties get bigger resulting from the corruption and bad management i want to direct the kurdish people and ask those responsible where has the money from oil revenues gone
8:16 pm
with us is also the kurdish regional government to cancel the referendum fearing it could fuel regional tensions and distract from the battle against isis when also says it could destabilize iraq. has more from the capital of their ox kurdish region. he has dedicated his life to the kurdish flag making a living out of it even after spending two years in. jail but since he started his business twenty one years ago it's never been so good his products are selling like hotcakes. flags from all countries raised at the u.n. except ours it's enough our children died in the war against i so now they send us the shia paramilitary forces to scare us we are mountain people we're not afraid of saddam hussein and now we're not afraid of the molecule. is plastered with kurdish colors there's

a spike in national ever since the referendum for self-determination was announced . also proud of their president muscled barzani who stands firm despite international pressure to postpone the referendum the majority of the five million registered voters are expected to say yes the vote is also taking place in the. currently under control of the kurdish forces but one of the biggest challenges is that most of the people from those areas and now scattered around the kurdish region many of them living in camps. here there is none of the joy celebrations seen just a short drive away. is more worried about the fate of her son she hasn't heard from him since he was captured by i still about a year ago from the town of sin. we already lost our homes our town our neighbors the life we've known for thirty or forty years we will say yes but who knows if we'll get our rights we from the disputed areas lost at sea we want

someone who will be able to stare us to safety an estimated three hundred thousand displaced iraqis will vote in one thousand camps across the region their ballots will go through a special procedure. for example this is the ballot. yes then it's put into an envelope this envelope will go into another with a name and ration card number. if the name is on the registering we will count and if not we will throw it away. but this is a historic moment once they have been waiting for for a lifetime even if for many this referendum is the last step before declaring independence but that doesn't meet. demonstrators calling for castle and independence have gathered in hundreds of towns across the region in defiance of the spanish government's attempts to block monday's referendum spanish police have arrested castle on officials and electoral materials and thousands of

fastest and most urgent refugee emergency in the world you know the figures but let me repeat them we estimate that four hundred then almost four hundred and thirty thousand refugees from myanmar or from northern iraq and state have poor into bangladesh in the past few week violence to stop because it is that violence that has caused the flight of the people violence has to stop or shock is turning to anger among ranger refugees pouring in. some according from. on the border inside this bag is a twelve year old girl she's being carried to the camp by her cousins after crossing the border. mean more soldiers slit her brother's throat they

8:26 pm
the standoff could turn into some kind of conflict people in japan know that given their proximity to the korean peninsula and also that close alliance with the united states it's almost inconceivable that they will be able to stay out of any conflict and people here do look with increasing alarm at the kind of personal rhetoric and war of words that's going on between kim jong un of north korea and president trump of the us. as adults we should use peaceful means such as diplomacy to settle this matter. if you continue to provoke each other it's a problem that could escalate into something horrible what concerns people here especially is now talk by north korea setting off some sort of nuclear device over the pacific ocean a presumably being launched on a missile that would have to fly over the top of japan in recent weeks japan has already experienced two missiles being fired over its territory having
8:27 pm
a missile now carrying a nuclear warhead takes things to a whole new and very dangerous level on a clearer view to u.s. president donald trump more than a dozen national football league players have knelt during the national anthem at a much london some n.f.l. players happy refusing to stand in protest at social and racial injustice in the u.s. . well you're trying tweeted more criticism all the n.f.l. players who protest during them calling on fans to consider boycotting the n.f.l. if teams don't discipline the players many players have chose to ignore those warnings. we're joined by their teammates linking arms in a sign of unity and solidarity let's take you live now to washington d.c. and speak to our correspondent there kimberly how can believe this work i saw a crisis i guess in n.f.l. but it's certainly an argument a deep seated argument goes on. that's right and it's continuing even this hour
8:28 pm
as the latest round of american style football games began here in the united states we're hearing reports that at least four different teams dozens of players protesting a show of solidarity against the president's comments resisting his calls for them to stand during the national anthem exercising their right on the field to freedom of speech in a variety of ways kneeling some raising their face this is really extended to be a bit of a movement if you will the president sort of injecting himself into the ongoing controversy over race in the united states using his bully pulpit if you will and certainly seeing the pushback as a result in fact well the president's treasury secretary steve on the sunday chat shows tried to defend the president saying that the national football league has rules and well they ministration supports freedom of speech certainly shouldn't be exercised in the administration's view on the field that because of those rules it
8:29 pm
should be done off the field the players association pushing back defending the players saying these players really do a lot more than just sell shoes and you know sort of play a good game for people to enjoy but they're leaders of the community pillars of the community and they have a right to inject themselves in the debate over what they see is predominant racial injustice in the united states i guess could really what is going to be interesting to see is whether football fans all of them football fans respond to donald trump appeal to boycott those games or not i mean whether they're going to continue cutting outs in numbers for the games or whether they will actually respond to the president. well the interesting fact about all of this is that the players predominantly are african-american two thirds up to seventy percent some say and up to this point have been kind of boycotting the games as a show of solidarity standing up with those players who were pushing back but now that donald trump has said and called for
8:30 pm
a boycott they say on social media in fact they're going to do just the opposite there certainly is a lot of support for those players that choose to exercise their free speech we've seen this not just on the football field we've also seen in the arena of basketball prominent basketball stars like le bron james speaking out on social media criticizing the comments by the president and also to on saturday we saw the first baseball player taking a knee in a stand with his fellow players across teams for so certainly this is become a movement the united states that even extends to music star stevie wonder taking not one knee but two before his concert saturday night new york saying that what this country needs right now is prayer and that's why he was praying for the future of the divisions that exist in the united states or it could be how could live in washington thank you.

undermined of the top stories on al-jazeera the german chancellor angela merkel appears to have easily won a fourth term in power as polls suggest her party won a third of votes in the parliamentary election merkel's current coalition partners the social democrats led by martin shorts are expected to win around twenty percent of the vote a historic low for the sense of their party they've said they will leave merkel's coalition government and go into opposition. meanwhile the anti islam and anti immigrant a.f.d. is on track to become the country's third largest political force the first major parliamentary victory for a far right party in nearly sixty years the mainstream parties have ruled out talking to the f.t. about forming a coalition his manifesto included a pledge to ban all mosques and criminalize people wearing the veil or merkel has vowed to win back votes from the f.t. . vision we don't have to beat around the bush of course we hope for a better result that is clear however we mustn't forget we've had
