5:00 pm
democratic republic of congo at this time on al-jazeera. al-jazeera. ever your. thousands of people lined up to vote in catalonia secession referendum is the police use force to shut down polling stations.
5:01 pm
and forget this is al jazeera live from doha also coming up accusations and insults between president trump and a senior puerto rican official at the u.s. as the u.s. caribbean territory struggles to recover from hurricane maria. a rare admission by secretary of state rex tillerson the u.s. is in direct talks with north korea. and searching for justice one man's case against police in new york is highlighted in a new documentary. as voters continue to go to the polls the spanish government is called catalonia is controversial session referendum illegal and unconstitutional the remarks come several hours after polls opened and scenes of violence by spain's national police towards voters a polling stations government says that more than three hundred people have been injured spain's deputy prime minister says the police response was proportional
5:02 pm
will be speaking to al-jazeera tony berkeley who was in madrid for the latest but first let's speak with. a whole his reporting for us from barcelona right now a couple of hours ago several hours ago col you witnessed that that heavy handedness by police first hand. absolutely adrian but before we get to that i want to show you a scene going on right now at the industrial school in barcelona this is one of the largest voting centers and we were here a little earlier today i want to show you what's happening in the rear entrance of the industrial school here citizens young men organized into the so-called defense committees a building a barricade at the rear entrance of the industrial school in case spanish riot police try to break through here i'm just going to tell you a bit about this barricade it's been thrown together with there are some loudspeakers here really heavy stuff down here. there are some wooden pallets
5:03 pm
and also some concrete brought here and they've thrown this up at the height you can see just over the back that is the main highway that is where they expect the spanish riot police to arrive we did see the police here coming to the front entrance earlier in the day but citizens there simply slammed heavy. and the riot police had to leave that wasn't of course the case in some other of the polling stations around. there we saw citizens again organized in human cordons to try and protect schools in other areas used as voting stations when the spanish police were arriving they were grabbing the manhandling in them and dragging them away now there have been injuries. around three hundred people have been injured we saw one elderly lady with blood streaming down her face another man
5:04 pm
being stretchered away after suffering perhaps some kind of seizure what it seems to me is that here in barcelona it's been the spanish national police that have been used to try and shut down these voting centers in rural areas or catalonia remember catalonia roughly the size of belgium that is where the civil guard. units have been used to remember that those are a military unit with police duties but there certainly have been injuries here and that has led to cattle an authority calling on the spanish government to stop the use of these police reinforcements sent into the zone they're saying that their use has been disproportionate and on acceptable adrian you've been seeing these these police going from polling station to polling station in convoys of trucks right. exactly what seems to me is that these national police the riot police were
5:05 pm
organized into what i call flying squads seven seven truck units sometimes two units would come together there would be fourteen or fifteen trucks and they would go around barcelona trying to shut down voting centers but they wouldn't stop for very long they would stop perhaps for ten or fifteen minutes. and what has happened is that that really hasn't stopped voting it's delayed it to not stop because then there have been layers and layers of contingency plans and so then simply those voting stations they pulled out new ballot boxes more papers and voting has gone ahead here at the industrial college just saying one of barcelona's largest voting centers there are still lines of people those have dropped a little bit right now it's dinner time the lunch time for the spaniards and for cattle and but those show me that once that is over more people will be back remember there are still five hours of voting still to go adrian all right karl
5:06 pm
many thanks indeed ours is called penholder live in barcelona let's take you know the spanish capital madrid al-jazeera study berkeley is the tourney illegal irresponsible unconstitutional the central government there and the drug has called cattle lutie as follows. yes totally in there justifying their actions in fact the deputy prime minister go to a press conference and she congratulated the police she says they acted proportionately completely opposite to what they're saying in the castle and government they believe the measures have been necessary they believe they've been applied correctly and they call the castle argument as you said unconstitutional undemocratic and acting against the rules of law and coming coexistence they've called for the karzai government to step down to scale down their actions and not let let them escalate further they further said that this referendum now is it virtually dead because they dismantle the operators for the referendum and then it's not meeting the democratic requirements so as far as they're concerned the
5:07 pm
referendum has failed that comes with a lot of support i think from people especially here in madrid who are very much in favor of catalonia staying with spain but that's not the view of everybody i'm joined now by ramon walsh he's a spokesperson for a. called coordination twenty five that's a number a group for civil liberties organizations around spain but you are in favor of the referendum or why is that yet we are in favor of the right of the union now because this is the demographic. way we are going to and we have the right to be. bad now we can see that really only and people don't have the right to say and we think that. this is the demographic demographics right now to decide what kind of fish they you want to leave now don't you get only about hearing this pain.
5:08 pm
all their peoples how in this state. their right to these. has been. because. we didn't decide what kind of woman we have. between markey on republic you know we have her more on t.v. good for him. and now we've got them to the side of the ring is the fairest but if they don't take the old people would you accept that if you allow catalonia to have its independence and break away that maybe other regions for example the basque region maybe the bilirakis islands turnaround for example they all might want to go dane the same route and you'd end up with a fragmented spain. yeah but. you know united spain only helps them to do you know there are soldiers for their corruption to oppress people yes thanks to the kind of government and if they were in that people want to separate this thing yes it's the right. but. now
5:09 pm
it's only helpful for them to have. to a part of the people and to repeat i'm all the people what do you think this stand by catalonia will do for the rest of spain and for other organizations like yours that believes the has to be change in spain yet now what you're doing is a happy thing for all the people because this. will reduce the riemann some seventy eight remain we call it like this. started to break down so we have a happy moment for all the people and especially for the telling young people need to know where to meet the. what about the way the police and the government have acted in terms of using the force they have been in barcelona is that surprised you . know we are not surprised this is the way they that they do the things usually in get there and they were talking about this all of them on.
5:10 pm
bringing. to get the union from outside but here when we go by parliament they do this and they did the same. thing in the march they did the same always the only answer is their oppression is the only answer that they have thank you so much so there we have it you have many views in spain and there's a lot of cracks in the society here that's been opened up by what's happening in catalonia we'll have to see what happens in the coming days but perhaps spain will never be the same again after this but tony many thanks to tony bertie there live in madrid. the french military has shot and killed a man who stabbed other people at a train station in the southern coastal city of la say police have cordoned off the area around the south shot station france of course still on high alert following a wave of attacks that began at the start of twenty fifteen targeting several cities across the country the latest now from as a serious attacks about those on the line in paris natasha what more do we know.

5:17 pm
for us now from boston over. at this polling place in the center of barcelona thousands of people have lined up all day long waiting for the opportunity to vote and when the voting machines were packed they waited until another web site was set up so that four workers could verify each voter but held side of the downtown area in barcelona not everybody is in favor of secession we talked to some of them and this is what they had to say he said i knew i lived here for sixty years of course they love catalonia it's where my children are where my family lives but there's no reason why we have problems with this obsession just. if i am capital and yeah and i don't think like the secessionist do that i'm from the outside but then when i go to my family home then i'm also from the outside so where am i from and what identity do i have here so firstly i'm from the town of high and then

with north korea one hour from mike hanna in washington. this is the first public of knowledge meant by the trumpet ministration that it has been in direct contact with north korea the secretary of state saying that there are two if not three avenues that it is using for communication he also made clear that it is not through china in other words the u.s. is using avenues of communication unilaterally separate from china this is very significant because it indicates that the secretary of state is still believes that there is a diplomatic resolution possible to this ongoing crisis this despite the hostile words that have been exchanged by the president of the u.s. and of the leader of north korea in recent months it's also an indication of the growing warmth in the relationship between china and the u.s. in the past china has a deal of houston of not fully implementing the sanctions that had been passed
5:20 pm
against north korea in the u.n. security council and indeed the sanctions that have been unilaterally imposed by the united states but in recent months there has been a significant policy shift china has been implementing these sanctions as shown by the fact that it's instructed its banks to no longer do business with north korea it is restricting the import of oil into north korea so this is something very significant in terms of the u.s. stated policy of getting china to bring greater pressure to bear on north korea in an attempt to resolve this crisis but also what is happening is that it does not only pertain to north korea the relationship between the u.s. and china is growing stronger through this ongoing crisis in wider areas such as trade. the head of the world food programme has visited ranger refugee camps in bangladesh aid agencies are trying to help the more than half a million who fled
