been in trouble in the saving of lives they paired up with our officers out at the scene and i think their actions in the heroic acts were instrumental in saving several hundred lives associated with this event and then you have our attorney general adam laxalt he's brought forth his office to help us in any future prosecution associated with the case and you have the special agent in charge of the f.b.i. as i mentioned the f.b.i. has been standing next to us from the very first minute and they are providing all the resources available to the federal government to help us in this endeavor and then you have a car county commission chairman steve select he has been instrumental in getting us resources to the first responders far as refreshments and food and support of the tire county commission i have been on the phone the entire night with the mare carolyn goodman and she responded to u.n.c. to check on the patients and she is in the process
4:01 pm
a visiting the other hospitals and showing the support of the city and then obviously we have our congressman ruben cueing he is in town to also show us our support. so any other questions or the members standing before you. well we have to establish what his motivation is person and there's motivating factors associated with terrorism other than distraught person just intending to cause mass casualties before we label with that it'll be a matter of process. no we have not. no we have not we have not located any items within the room or his house at this point. yes ma'am it was a matter of normal practice and whenever we are dynamic entry.
4:02 pm
when. we have information he's been there since the twenty eighth of september. so i have no idea as to whether he remained in the house keepers remunerate the room or not that's just a matter of continue to investigate. all right thank you very much we'll provide you an update probably in the next two hours thank you. so you've been listening to an update from the sheriff of clark county that is for las vegas is located it's a new information coming out of this mass shooting where at least fifty people were killed four hundred injured what he's saying is the gunman sixty four year old stephen paddick apparently had at least ten rifles that is something that they found in the room also they were looking for a female companion of his come to find out according to the sheriff she actually was not even in the city in the state at this time he apparently was using her i.d. they say at this time it appears that she had nothing to do with this but that is
4:03 pm
an angle that they are still investigating and also appears that he has been in that room at mandalay bay since at least september twenty eighth but again they're in the palm unary stages of this they've also executed a search warrant on his home in the skeet in the skeet so yes this is the worst gun related attack in modern history president donald trump took to twitter to offer his warmest condolences to the victims let's go now to. washington and a moment for us politics are the latest. this was the final night of a festival in las vegas when gunfire silenced the music. witnesses say they were in absolute panic and pandemonium we were the furthest v.i.p. stages away from mandalay bay and they were ricocheting everywhere we were saw it was they were firing from somewhere high and they were unloading clip after clip
4:04 pm
after clip after clip. police say the shooter sixty four year old stephen paddick was on the thirty second floor of the mandalay bay hotel across the vegas strip. offices responding to the shooting say they killed we located numerous firearms within the room that he occupied and that's and like i stated earlier it's going to be of long and tedious investigation obviously this is a tragic incident and one that we have never experienced in this valley investigators were quick to tell the public that rumors of multiple shooters at several locations were false this is now the deadliest mass shooting attack in the u.s. culture dirge on al jazeera. joins us live now from the white house kimberly what has been the reaction i got out of the white house to the again the worst mass shooting in modern u.s. history. right well there has been
4:05 pm
a reaction as you point out by the president on social media in the last couple of hours extending his warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the las vegas shooting we also know from the press secretary sarah huckabee sanders that the president was informed of this pretty swiftly and that there was a close consultation because it was unclear exactly what was unfolding in that remains the case in terms of the motive but also just why this would would take place and what would cause somebody to act now i can tell you that we're expecting to hear from the president he will be appearing at the white house for a previously scheduled event at fifteen of course we are expecting that he may say something at that time we've also got release a press release from the department of homeland security we do know that the acting homeland security secretary elaine duke in fact has been monitoring this and she has through the statement indicated that it is not just local officials who are
4:06 pm
investigating right now what is turning out to be a massive crime scene but also state and federal investigators including the f.b.i. because what's interesting about this is this suspect who we now know from police killed himself he had no prior criminal record other than what is believed to be what they have police are calling a routine traffic stop at this time what the homeland security is saying is that people should always be cautious in public spaces but right now again they're not exactly clear what his motive was and why he decided to fire on a crowd of thousands of people who were enjoying a concert ok there's going to be another press conference at the sheriff mentioned there in a couple of hours we'll check back in on that and check back in with you as well can really help that live for us in washington thanks can relate. catalan is government is claiming victory in sunday's referendum that says ninety percent of those who voted back secession from spain but only forty two percent of catalonia
4:07 pm
five point three million registered voters are believed to have turned out for that referendum that's just under two million people many opposition groups in the region boycotted the vote because they believe the poll to be illegal in line with the spanish government and its estimated spanish police shut down about half of the polling stations are running many people from being able to vote either way. my niece. and the entire world is seeing that on one side we have beilenson shame and on the other a democracy and dignity and this is an easy election to have moreover this is an election that we asked both from the european institutions and from governments of other countries who want desire a call out for us to be able to build a more an open democratic world. being coexistence is a good that we must begin to recover as soon as possible and i say very clearly i'm not going to close any door on if it did it's not my way of doing politics i've always offered an honest sincere dialogue but always within the law and always
4:08 pm
within the democracy frame. john hendren has more from barcelona. spain considered it a crime but catalonian leaders consider the reverend here a triumph they were aiming for a spectacular show of force when it came to turn out what they got was about forty percent that's far less than spectacular but there were extraordinary circumstances leading up to this spain tried to shut down the election it did not happen although the spanish police did certainly dampen turnout there were some brutal confrontations with demonstrators in which the demonstrators came out much for the worse spanish police invaded polling stations took out the ballots which they considered illegal so that reduced the number who were turned out so extraordinary circumstances nevertheless president carlos told me what ever the level of turnout was under spanish law it didn't matter he says that he will go forward with his efforts to declare independence if more and more people said yes in that vote and
4:09 pm
they certainly did by about ninety percent but here on the ground in spain the day after the referendum looks pretty much like the day before for this region or catalonia has a booming economy a booming tourism industry and a lot of people here say that is just the point with or without spain things here. we remain pretty much the same bangladesh and me and more have a great to set up a plan to repatriate more than half a million refugees who fled violence i'm in mars for kind state that was made after me and mars later on sun so chasing a representative to hold talks with thing with us his foreign minister the details of the plan have not been drafted but a group has been appointed to set up the efforts the un has called the exodus of over five hundred thousand one hundred to bangladesh since late august the world's fastest developing refugee emergency in accuses me in march of ethnic cleansing at the lake is the executive director of unicef he joins us from cox's bazaar in
4:10 pm
bangladesh mr like thank you for joining us what have you seen since you have been there. well i visited two refugee camps today and the side seen the extraordinary needs. of the need for water the need for schooling for the children the need for counselling for the children i it's immense i say i visited two cabs in fact it's practically one camp now they were separated by about five kilometers now they are joined together because of this massive influx of people in huge need over sixty percent or so of these check of these refugees are children about a fifth of them are suffering malnourishment i could go on and on with this statistics we in the us and the governments and i think we all should thank the government for allowing them in across their border. but we are overwhelmed by the
4:11 pm
needs and we are working as fast as we can we're increasing our efforts but we have a long way to go and they need all the help we can get to meet those needs i met with children and women just a few hours ago who told me the most horrific stories of the villages being burned of rape the man in families being killed while the women were raped and then allowed to go i could go on and on they then suffered in their efforts to get here by boat very dangerous or across minefields they now are in desperate need and we have to ask the question if they are repatriated. to what will they go will they be allowed to live at all related or will they consider continue to suffer as they have also in that process and mr lake i am it's clear that families have been
4:12 pm
broken up as well how prevalent is the issue of children that are separated from their families. well part of the problem is we don't know we know there are thousands of children who are separated unaccompanied children but we the populations hear him moving around so it's very hard to get very good statistics on this because they're not registered and and so it's hard to know who is in which category but clearly there are many unaccompanied children and we're working to try to get them back with their families they should be with families of some sort they should not be put into separate facilities and segregated from the rest of the refugees that will do. these are already very traumatized kids and to separate this that in this way would further traumatize and when they need all the support from human beings that they can get so it's at this point are the numbers increasing at the same taste if they
4:13 pm
were a month ago or has it slowed down as it steadied. it's not a constant flow they're coming in waves because they travel in groups so for the last few days the number has slowed somewhat and we don't know whether that's the beginning of a longer term trend or whether there will be new waves that depends of course on whether the atrocities continue on the other side of the border. ok mr lake is it do you do you have the the resources you need the manpower you need or is this just an over whelming emergency. no we don't we've unicef we've been sending people from our headquarters and our regional offices and from our office in dhaka to serve people in here to try to
4:14 pm
help but we're meeting somewhere or in some areas like water. and education maybe ten percent of the children so far we have plans to ramp up of course we need resources to help to do that if i could say so these children and these women who i met with they all need our help now but we also have to look to the future and these children are already suffering from a loss of their right now their childhood we have to give them a future and if we don't this is going to become an intergenerational problem that the region is going to have to live with for a long long time so now is the time to reduce the violence on the other side of the border and urgently to help these children now. well said anthony lake with unicef mr like thank you. plenty more ahead of the news hour including a malaysia two women accused of murdering the north korean leader's a strange half brother go on trial. on how many struggled to reunite shows how long

the ricos road to recovery will be. and the sport n.f.l. players continue to defy u.s. president donald trump details coming up in sport but peter. have arrived in the gaza strip as part of efforts to mend ties with rival palestinian factions hamas the palestinian authority's prime minister. leading the delegation it's his first visit to the strip since two thousand and fifteen has struggled with months of electricity electricity shortages address the need for unity to combat the israeli occupation of the palestinian territories. now it's time to stand together and to work the only beneficiary of a long division is the occupation in that context i would like to say the decision
4:16 pm
by hamas to respond to the initiative by palestinian president mahmoud abbas dissolve in gaza's administrative committees is an important step upon which we will build we are confident that mutual understanding and positive will will prevail we look forward to working with old political factions. harry fawcett. for us so. what do we expect for the meetings what's going to come what's happening . well at the moment the meetings preliminary ones between mr huhne dollar and ismail haniyeh the political leader of hamas as well as the leaders of palestinian factions here we understand that a senior fatah representative here in gaza has opened up his house to host these meetings. and if the sort of the the warmth of the welcome that has been put on for the palestinian authority government is any sign then things are off to
4:17 pm
a pretty positive start there were hundreds of largely young people waiting for the arrival of this delegation at the erez crossing they were straining to hear they were climbing on top of roofs and on top of structures to to get a glimpse of what was about to happen and as part of his speech rami on dollar also said that there would be a specific focus on trying to improve the lives of young people because there is sixty percent youth unemployment here at the moment they have suffered perhaps more than anyone during the last ten years of power to palestinian political split and israeli and egyptian blockade the test will be now that hamas has removed itself from the immediate responsibility of trying to improve those lives can the palestinian authority step into the breach and make good on some of the promises that it's been making harry remind us of what some of the obstacles have been before why this is failed in the past. well certainly there have been other
4:18 pm
attempts during these these last ten years to try and get a unity government up and running again in two thousand and eleven there was the cairo agreement which really just crumbled away after a few weeks similarly in two thousand and fourteen there was a unity government sworn in but it never actually got to grips with running the gaza strip itself and some of the problems that will be up for discussion and off a negotiation during the course of this will be. for example who exactly runs the egyptian border the security on the border hamas and egypt have just recently done a deal on that now will the palestinian authority expect to assume sole responsibility there how the internal security of the gaza strip is run will they allow hamas officials and security staff to carry on being that the people on the ground or to what extent can they bring back the many thousands of palestinian authority workers who have been on the sidelines sitting at home getting paid by
4:19 pm
the p.a. but not paid as much recently during the recent restrictions and then there is the whole question of hamas as a military wing the brigades hamas is saying that that was never discussions. over that in the fate of that were never on the table in these egypt brokered talks but there are but that has been a problem in the past who exactly has control of that very powerful military and indeed politically influential body and will it be able to be subsumed entirely under the authority of a new unity government those issues perhaps being postponed for now while they hand over ministerial power in the various ministries but they will be things that they'll have to try and solve at some stage in the future harry. harry thank you. in an investigation has revealed that the egyptian government broken international embargo on trading weapons with north korea. has more. this
4:20 pm
north korean vessel flying a cambodian flag was intercepted by u.s. intelligence agencies near. the ship was carrying a cargo of all but hidden underneath were thirty thousand rocket propelled grenades egypt initially denied it had anything to do with the seas cargo but a panel of united nations investigators say the grenades were destined for the egyptian army. human and u.s. experts say north korea has built a vast network of overseas clients to evade international sanctions the cash starved country is selling cheap weapons to a long list of clients in africa latin america and asia the u.s. is concerned revenue from the arms trade could help more korea pursue its nuclear weapons program the arms cargo destined for egypt was later destroyed but in
4:21 pm
response the trump administration froze two hundred ninety million dollars of aid to egypt and is calling on its allies to comply with the tough sanctions imposed on north korea after a string of recent missile a nuclear attack. but for the time being north korea seems determined to find ways to bypass those sanctions. growth is the former head of the verification and security policy coronation at the international atomic energy agency he joins us from vienna and we appreciate it is this a surprise to you. i don't think it's a surprise we all know that for many years north korea has been exporting small arms and other conventional weapons as a way of earning hard currency in foreign exchange and to get around un sanctions what do we know particular about at least what was found this time these days
4:22 pm
r.p.g. what does what does this say about what their supply is well it seems that this ship was intercepted in august of last year the jisshu in the us carrying this twenty four thousand rocket propelled grenades and six thousand components for a total of thirty thousand and these were exported through a company called up pan systems pyongyang or pan systems being young which apparently is an arm of the d.p. r. k. intelligence service and it has been created to find customers and to supply small arms and munitions to that customers in africa and the middle east so countries that want to impose sanctions on north korea are these the kinds of challenges they face the fact that there are still countries that are willing to do business with them. well in most cases these are arms merchants and not governments even though your report said the egyptian government i believe it was the middleman ok unarmed spirituous or who had
4:23 pm
a contract with the egyptian military the egyptian military owns about a hundred and eighty thousand r.p.g. a rocket launchers so getting thirty thousand practice grenades these were not useful weapons but they were for practice it's not a surprise and there are in many countries there are illegally set up or camouflaged arms export merchants who have gone practice with their defense ministries and then they put a false flag of origin on the equipment supplied to the military and in most cases the government or the military customer thinks that the purchase is legitimate but the arms merchant has done the camouflage and the subterfuge how they criticize for north korea. apparently this particular shipment was about twenty three million dollars so that would be an important. for north korea given that i think anomic sanctions that have been imposed against this but i should also add that the five permanent members of the security council themselves are the world's largest. and

particularly through regions of conflicts which are the middle east so we need to be careful about casting stones and there's a lot of hypocrisy in this business. your government and arms merchants americans of death as they're usually called ok trade profe thank you very much for your insight appreciate it. iraq's former leader saddam hussein used chemical weapons against the kurds a lodger province in one nine hundred eighty eight the attack is often cited as the argument for kurdish autonomy but its fight that painful history the province turned out in last week's secession referendum was low it's trial strafford now reports. almost thirty years ago during the final days of the iran iraq war the people of this town were victims are going to trial city that shocked the world. almost sixteen thousand nine hundred eighty eight iranian soldiers were in the area when iraqi warplanes dropped chemical weapons in and around the kurdish town.
4:25 pm
it's estimated that up to five thousand people were killed in the chemical attacks . now you think that the people that have suffered such an appalling atrocity would be fully behind the referendum on eventual secession from iraq but the province of had one of the lowest turnouts in the vote. there were no flags will sign celebrating the referendum here there was a less than fifty five percent turnout in her lap just sixteen percent of those who did vote said no to the eventual future independence from iraq. she recently lost eight members of his family in the chemical attacks three decades ago he says the kurdish regional government has let down that the people have little trust of the government because of corruption and there is fierce competition between parties to maximize their gains life for every day people here is going backwards.
4:26 pm
in recent years there's been growing opposition in protests in this area over delays of government salaries. the federal government in baghdad stopped paying the seventeen percent from the budget in two thousand and fifteen because it accused the kurdish government of not sharing its oil revenue people here say any oil money the government in iraq bill has made has not been fairly distributed throughout the region. there is a difference between the rest of chaos economically speaking the government and our bill has been neglected in the people of the law services and infrastructure life is hard here there is a lot of support for opposition more than ninety two percent of those who voted said yes in the referendum but there are a lot of people in this province even ones who suffered so horrifically under the saddam regime who disagree. that al-jazeera northern iraq. let's
4:27 pm
turn to other now with steph thank you which out today we're going to be looking at north america we've got some pretty active weather at the moment let's take a look at the satellite picture then because you can see this area of cloud working its way towards the northeast it really does pull itself together as it does so giving more intense downpours as it gradually marches its way towards the great lakes and that system also because back around into the western parts of canada and it certainly has been giving some of us to some very heavy rain some places reporting over fifty millimeters of rain and at the moment it is rain rather than snow but that could be about to change because the temperatures behind that system a dropping so calgary during the day on monday probably no higher than around two degrees best from a temperature chart you could certainly make out where the warmer weather is that will work its way up from the south and that's because it's being dragged out ahead of that weather system and all that warm air is being fed stow slowly in northwards so the temperatures for many of us here are actually quite a bit above average washington d.c.
4:28 pm
is normally around nineteen degrees at this time of year will get to around twenty three seventy three in fahrenheit but it's chicago where the temperatures really are a long way above average at this time of year we normally be around sixteen we're right up at twenty eight and that system is only slowly edging its way eastward so for the eastern parts there's plenty of sunshine for a good few days yet. still ahead on al-jazeera stranded more than one hundred thousand passengers are scrambling to find a way home at the u.k. base monarch airlines cancels its flights. on his biggest sports team plays behind closed doors peter will tell you why and score. on counting the cost of the world's fastest growing startup created a new labor market but cannot business model clear the regulation roadblocks ahead plus the fact is a play as well priced. enter

al-jazeera let's recap the top stories this hour. and las vegas has left fifty people dead more than four hundred injured police say sixty four year old stephen paddick opened fire from the thirty second floor at the mandalay bay hotel a concert goers below you discovered dead and his room by officers more than ten weapons were found with him. regional government says ninety percent of voters went in favor of secession from spain in sunday's referendum that's despite an unexpectedly low turnout at least eight hundred forty four people were injured across the region spanish police moved to shut down some of those polling stations . senior leaders have arrived in the gaza strip as part of efforts to mend ties with rival palestinian factions hamas the palestinian authority's prime minister
4:31 pm
romney is leading the delegation it's his first visit to the strip since two thousand and fifteen. made use of as a hamas official and was a political advisor to the former palestinian prime minister ismail haniya and he joins us from gaza thank you very much so. we're feeling about this this is a big deal to have gotten to this moment are you optimistic yes. joy for most of the palestinian and it sounds like everybody. in gaza people lined up. thousands of them. to say that was quite a reception he received. i can't hear you but i do believe today is very important day people sound like they are happy

because. expecting something to have been tomorrow's going to be the cabinet meeting and the people waiting to hear what really sings that the government they promised to do tomorrow for the sake of solving the problem. that is and making the people to get out from a miserable life and hoping that it's going to be. something that the people expecting to see starting from tomorrow. promising that the government. in the press conference today mr rahman hundred. many things and the people waiting tomorrow to hear after the cabinet what are really the things that is going to fulfill all his the promises or we start again to go back to all the. rhetoric that we used to say against each other i hope tomorrow is going to be
4:33 pm
another day that keep to the joy joy nice of the joy of the people so what are what do you think are realistic expectations for the very beginning of this process . at least we have a new show we end the division and we are going to discuss to put everything on the table having to solve all the problems that we've been suffering in the last ten years. with the egyptian as the interlocutor they are going to help to solve what could consider anything. reconsolidation or and over. the whole process so i do believe that with the egyptian as interlocutor is going to sit side by side with everybody from gaza that make sure that all the things move and that is standing the things they have been discussed in
4:34 pm
a month ago it's all is going to be implemented the way they have discussed so you you think that egypt can make a difference in this process i do believe only this time because the confidence that we have built with the egyptian this time there might be able to handle the things that we that we both trusted the egyptian to be. honest broker to the whole process so that egyptian if there is any problem from any side they be they will be able to handle this and make sure that everybody is following the steps based on national. process that we signed in two thousand why she said it is a momentous day and we'll have to see how this all plays out thank you very much. so saddam's have attacked a police station in the syrian capital damascus at least eleven people were killed
4:35 pm
in the blast syrian state television says civilians and policemen are among the dead monitoring group the syrian observatory for human rights says a car bomb went off near the police station before two suicide bombers blew themselves up swinging in task is monitoring the story from beirut in neighboring lebanon so what else have you been able what it will also be learned and yes. that's right show what we know is that in the last hour a very major attack in the southern part of the capital damascus we understand that a car bomb laden with explosives went off outside the dun police station again in the south of the city following that two suicide bombers who also were strapped with explosives detonated their belts and they to cause significant damage to this police station as you rightly point out we understand that at least eleven people have been killed although we're hearing that number could be much higher some putting that death toll up to around seventeen we also hear that many people have
4:36 pm
been injured as well but again as we've been saying the syrian government has already come out to say that they are calling this a terrorist attack that they will be resolved in fighting this terror but again as we've been saying a fairly significant attack on this police station in the south of the city and has how common is this type of attack in damascus. yeah that's a very good question we have to remember this is the seat of power for the syrian president bashar al assad this is a city which has extraordinary security surrounding its of course because of this very long war that syria is in the grips of but we haven't seen an attack of this scale in damascus frankly for a very long time however this specific police station has been targeted in the past before in fact in december of two thousand and sixteen a nine year old girl who was strapped in
4:37 pm
a suicide vest set off that device at this police station killing and injuring a number of people so as we've been saying we understand that this course is a very serious security lapse by the security or rather by the syrian regime who of course have extraordinary security precautions in place but questions no doubt are being asked that how this police the police station could now be the target of two major attacks less than a year apart ok and live for us in beirut covering that that suicide bombing in damascus thank you yes president has called critics of his response to disaster hit puerto rico politically motivated and great power is still down those are running low some families remain separated nearly two weeks after hurricane maria devastated the u.s. territory teresa both followed two sisters on a journey to find their missing father. shadi anti health failed have not heard

a major blow to britain's aviation industry with it potentially the loss of two thousand jobs largely here in the united kingdom i should mention the vast numbers of people one hundred ten thousand people currently stranded overseas that now need to be brought back here to the u.k. what's being described by britain's transport minister as the largest peace time we pump creation in terms of the reasons there wide and far ranging according to k p m g the company has been brought in to liquidate moloch they blamed it on everything from brakes at the slump in the pound the soaring increase in aviation fuel to an incredible amount of competition in the market particularly in the mediterranean the company itself has blamed the results of attacks that have targeted tourists in places like tunisia egypt and turkey for putting people off leading to this huge loss of profits and now the closure of monuc stores ok maybe barker my price gap
