a gunman has killed at least fifty eight people and injured five hundred fifteen others at a country music festival in las vegas it is the worst mass shooting in modern u.s. history and the country's two hundred seventy third this year alone that is an average of one a day president trump has called it an act of pure evil police say the gunman opened fire from the thirty second floor of the mandalay bay hotel that's on the other side of the las vegas strip from the las vegas village arena where the music festival was taking place it's a distance of several hundred meters. well the shooter has been named a sixty four year old steven product he killed himself as police closed in on him more weapons and ammunition were found during a search of his home near las vegas the second like to los vegas and speaks out as rob reynolds and rob bring us up to date with the latest on the investigation a slew of understand it. well what's going on right now felicity is that the police

and other officials are taking great pains to go over the crime scene which is an enormous area that was the struck by about four hundred bullets it's estimated when the alleged shooter stephen paddick opened fire last night on that country music festival they're looking at evidence there with that they have retrieve bodies from the area and in in a couple of hours they're going to be asking. relatives and friends of the victims to gather at a convention center at the mandalay bay that's the same hotel where the shooter fired from thirty second floor to help identify the dead and to receive grief counseling now this of course is as you mentioned one of the worst mass shootings in recent american history and came totally without warning on

a night when many people were simply enjoying themselves with an evening out of that turned into a nightmare in a second can really help it as more. americans woke up to learn of the deadly las vegas shooting that occurred while they slept. the final night of a three day country music festival in progress when the first bullets were fired concert goers scattered for safety as the gunfire rained down on them from a hotel room thirty two for. savant. and. i had my wife had dropped down to just kind of and i told her to get up and start with this is gone we went back to their room and as soon as we reached the room from the concert venue we just heard constant shootings at first we thought it was fireworks but then it was. las vegas police report they're working with state

and federal investigators to determine what motivated sixty four year old stephen paddick to open fire on the crowd of thousands clued in children and this is an individual that was described as a lone wolf i don't know how it could have been prevented if we didn't have any prior knowledge to this individual it was evident that he had weapons in his room we have determined that there has been employees going to and fro from his room and not in an affair is was noticed the shooting reportedly went on for more than ten minutes it stopped when police breached the hotel room door the gunman then turned his weapon on himself at least ten rifles were found in paddocks room u.s. president donald trump offered grieving victims and their families sympathy and support it was an act of pure evil in moments of tragedy and harm america comes together as one. and it always

has. emergency responders expect the number of casualties to continue to climb as police continue to investigate what motivated the gunman to act and what's now being labeled the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history that's right rob isn't it people right now trying to find out much more about the gunman himself. and there's not that much to be known at this point the felicity stephen paddick was a retired accountant or assessor of some kind he lived not far from las vegas in a town called mosquito nevada he and the parent lee enjoyed coming to las vegas to gamble from time to time also a fan of country music but no one who knew him said that he exhibited any signs of violence any mental disorder or any kind of ideology the islamic state eisel
9:07 pm
claimed in the hours following the shooting that he paddick was acting on their behalf claiming that he had been converted to islam a short couple of months ago but the f.b.i. here in las vegas has dismissed that saying there's no sign that the paddock had any links to any international organizations of that type and even his family members were completely dumbfounded here is one of stephen haddocks rather speaking in orlando florida. there's just nothing he's on the public record he did stuff he went to college he had a job. and you know we own some apartments we sold some apart we i mean there's there's nothing there was no. nothing that's what's so. i mean. i mean i can't even make something up
9:08 pm
there's just. there's nothing. you can hear the be willed or meant in that man's voice the brother of steven patrick patrick of course now dead so his motives cannot be ascertained from his own testimony police will be very interested in speaking to his what has been described as his female companion marilou john lee who is. it was not with him here in las vegas it is reported to be or abroad possibly in the philippines that may be a good source of information for police as they try to figure out the why of this seemingly on comprehensible in comprehensible act listening in las vegas thank you take you from los vegas to washington d.c. and speaks all white house correspondent kimberly how that can be sawyer in your reports that president trump described it as an axe of evil tell us more about the reaction in the u.s.
9:09 pm
capitol well already there has been as there often is following shootings in the united states a very polarized debate that is now getting under way with respect to gun control and the need for and against stricter gun control laws i can tell you that certainly this is something as a white house press briefing is set to get under way that the press secretary sara sanders is likely to face in terms of reaction well there certainly has been widespread grief from lawmakers who are issuing their statements there are also now are these questions being raised about the need for for tougher gun laws something that does vary from state to state of course congress has been regulating guns particularly since one nine hundred thirty four but it's up to the individual states and just how strict those gun laws can be i can tell you though those weighing in certainly include at least one former lawmaker gabby giffords who was shot in the head eighteen times in twenty eleven she has become
9:10 pm
a vocal advocate for stricter gun laws along with her husband former astronaut mark kelly. background checks for all gun sales you know is a good first step gun trafficking you know really taking a hard look at what kind of lethal weapon should we allow people to get easy access to i mean we don't have all the details in the shooting today but it was pretty clear that he used some kind of automatic weapon maybe multiple automatic weapons to do this i mean these weapons are designed to kill a lot of people very quickly the nation's counting on you. well certainly there are others on the other side of the debate here in the united states that would argue very strongly that guns save lives there was in fact a shooting at a church in the united states in the u.s. state of tennessee about a week ago that wasn't well publicized because there wasn't
9:11 pm
a massive loss of life as we're seeing in las vegas that many argue was prevented because one of the ushers was carrying a weapon and was able to apprehend the suspect in that case but certainly this debate is going to way john felicity i can tell you that what has been ruled out is rob reynolds also reported as any sort of connection to international terror but of course there are still a lot of questions to be answered in terms of motive and certainly that gun control debate continues to way john as we expect the white house press briefing and reporters will be answering or rather asking some very tough questions the senate will committee how close out the white house thank you well of all of the state where this attack happened has some of the most relaxed gunnels in the united states from all this so we're joined from durham north carolina by david chang he's director of the triangle center on terrorism and homeland security thanks so much for being with us on the program and let's deal with the gun debate first of all the debate's going to be had all over again is that
9:12 pm
a debate that's likely to make any difference though to the tightening of guns in the u.s. . well i think it can if you look internationally countries that have more restrictive gun laws actually have fewer gun homicides there are a variety of things that can be done and i think we really have to ask ourselves with respect to these kinds of weapons this huge volume of firepower why any citizen would need that level to protect themselves we have a right to in our constitution the supreme court recognize a right to defend yourself but not to be solo armed militia as this individual was but you to feel that if anything was going to lead to a tightening all of us gun laws it would have been the killing of those children in sandy hook back in two thousand and twelve obama was trying to push for the os it didn't happen under president trump even more unlikely to happen.
9:13 pm
well this is just a choice that us society has to make we have to decide whether we want to have some laws that are reasonable and limit the extent of gun prevalence in our country or live with these kinds of incidents that will happen on occasion we really can't have it both ways we can have a populace that has access to this level of firepower and then expect that these things aren't going to happen to my mind this was a disaster waiting to happen it was not a surprise to me at all and if we don't do something we'll continue to have these predictably again in the future we don't know when where we don't know what the motivation of the individual will be and none of that really matters what matters is how they executed the killing of so many and injury of so many people and that's what we have to focus on the other debate that we've seen quite a lot of on social media following this here i think the talk is whether or not the
9:14 pm
top should be described as terrorism as a terrorist attack what do you think what should be the definition of a terrorist attack. well this certainly was a terrorizing act but terrorism is violence motivated by some sort of political purpose and we just saw known enough at this stage about this particular individual's motivation to determine whether it was terrorism under that you know commonplace definition you know i was looking at nevada state statutes as an act of terrorism means any act that involves the use or attempted use of sabotage question of violence which is intended to cause great bodily harm or death to the general population doesn't talk about political. motives in the states not to nevada well we have a lot of laws on the books in the fifty states in the united states are federal
9:15 pm
laws so there's a question about what the legal definition is and then there's the question about you know those of us who study this particular phenomenon the phenomenon of terrorism has always been considered some form of political violence that's how we distinguish it between things like crime or things like. you know a psychopathic. mass murder so you know i think we can get caught up on these definitions and they really just don't have that much meaning maybe it'll be prosecuted under that statute of course he's dead but people in the future but the question really isn't you know whether this was terrorism or not the question is you know how do we stop these horrible killings and that change our society in very negative ways and of course cause tremendous harm to all the victims and families really interesting to talk to you david chance joining us there from. carolina thanks for your time thank you. a still ahead on this news from london the

with the current constitution so we should change it. carlos. the president of catalonia has said that he's going to declare independence or that he's going to ask the parliament here to the local parliament is that legal or not i mean from the point of. the constitution again it is not legal but the thing is that three weeks ago with the three weeks ago or one month ago already yes they. parliament. in bridge in breach of the constitutional. right now so what are spain's options you've got prime minister mariano rajoy. what are his options now can he take over this province if declares independence what are always options well i think that the best option would be have. an open

let's take you to tony he's in the spanish capital madrid force that feels like a bit of a stalemate rights now tony with the both sides waiting to see what the other one will do. yes i mean after the yesterday's frantic happenings it's been a very quiet day but it's a lot of talks have been going on behind closed doors as we understand it none of it between the castle and government or the spanish government mr hoyer the prime minister has been meeting the leaders of the main three parties in spain presumably to work out some kind of strategy and to see where they can go from here but the point from the constitutional lawyer there the spanish justice minister did warn today that if there was a unilateral declaration of independence that could trigger the invoking article one five five and that means madrid would take over direct direct rule of catalonia so that would be really upping the stakes are
9:25 pm
a great deal and nobody wants that who knows but the dialogue issue is one that while european countries have been saying it's an internal matter everybody has been stressing that dialogue is very important and that's something that's been totally absent in the lead up to this whole referendum there's been no talking in fact is bad blood between castle and government and mr roy but they are fragmented here also they have everyone has a different opinion even members of his own party want to see perhaps an election so he will then get a direct mandate from the from the people the opposition party but there must want to have a motion of no confidence in mr roy and get him sacked but that's unlikely to happen because the socialist party is backing him up so we're having a lot of to ing and fro ing if that unilateral declaration happens and of course that raises the threshold even higher and who knows what happens then tony but even the latest there in the spanish capital thank you tony. now people in english speaking areas of cameroon say the government is continuing its crackdown on
