and it's. on al-jazeera. in the hashtag when news coverage of looking for an easy solution we delved deeper for and challenge the status quo and join me in the hot sun for a new season of love from this time. with friends of al-jazeera that because we have extensive network people would come to us and actually shared information with the al-jazeera team into. fifty a day than five hundred fifteen injured after a gunman attacks a last vegas music festival it's the worst mass shooting in modern u.s. history it was an act of pure evil.
10:01 pm
hello i'm barbara starr you're watching al-jazeera live from london also coming up on the program. defiance on the streets but in the political sphere the movements towards mediation between spain and catalonia over secession huge crowds greet the palestinian prime minister in gaza as he brings a message of reconciliation and the british government launches a massive operation to repatriate tens of thousands of passengers stranded by the collapse of monarch airlines. thank you for joining us a gunman has killed at least fifty eight people and injured more than five hundred others at a country music festival in las vegas it's the worst mass shooting in modern u.s. history and the country's to her. dread and seventy third this year alone president
10:02 pm
trump has called it an act of pure evil police say sixty four year old stephen paddick opened fire from the thirty second floor of the mandalay bay hotel that's on the other side of the last vegas strip from the last vegas village arena where the music festival was taking place a distance of several hundred meters. the gunman shot himself dead as police closed in on him more weapons and ammunition were found during a search of his home near las vegas kimberly how kate has the latest. americans woke up to learn of the deadly las vegas shooting that occurred while they slept. the final night of a three day country music festival in progress when the first bullets were fired the concert goers scattered for safety as the gunfire rained down on them from a hotel room thirty two floors above. all sun.
10:03 pm
and. i had my wife had dropped down to just kind of and i told her to get up and start with this is gone we went back to their room and as soon as we reached the room from the concert venue we just heard constant shootings at first we thought it was fireworks but then it was. las vegas police report they're working with state and federal investigators to determine what motivated sixty four year old stephen paddick to open fire on the crowd of thousands including children and this is an individual who is described as a lone wolf i don't know how it could have been prevented if we didn't have any prior knowledge to this individual it wasn't evident that he had weapons in his room we have determined that there has been employees going to and fro from his room and not in an affair is was noticed the shooting reportedly went on for more than ten minutes it stopped when police breached the hotel room door the gunman
10:04 pm
then turned his weapon on himself at least ten rifles were found in patrick's room u.s. president donald trump offered grieving victims and their families sympathy and support it was an act of pure evil in moments of tragedy and horror. america comes together as one. and it always has. emergency responders expect the number of casualties to continue to climb as police continue to investigate what motivated the gunman to act and what's now being labeled the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. kimberly halkett reporting there will be talking to kimberly in just a moment first though we can cross to rob reynolds who is in last vegas set for us at rob i guess a city sort of recovering from the initial shock of what happened tell us a little bit about what's going on there now. i think it's
10:05 pm
a city barber that is still very much in shock you know las vegas is a party town it's where people from all over the world europe asia the united states the middle east come to enjoy themselves campbell take in a show of hands today it is a very somber mood you can see behind me a police cars blocking off the famous las vegas strip there are tourists in a very sort of subdued mood walking around just staring at the mandalay bay hotel where the shooter fired down on that defenseless crowd so it is extremely tough a day for las vegas and at the moment police are gathering evidence from the concert venue they've. gathered up the remains of the people who died
10:06 pm
you know there are five hundred fifteen people who are being treated for their injuries in addition to those fifty eight who were fatally wounded and today the loved ones of and family members friends of the. people who were killed are being asked to go to a convention center. at mandalay bay to help identify the bodies and also to receive a grief counseling and other assistance from for festivals i mean obviously absolutely heartbreaking to even think about having to do that but i guess the numbers that one going out on that now rob even those might change and they might go out but i suppose there's a lot of people that are very confused and just don't know where their loved ones are right now. that's right in the police and authorities are putting out toll free numbers for people to call you know there were twenty thousand people attending this conference and
10:07 pm
a lot of people got separated we're of children being separated from parents of people just being grabbed by strangers and told to run so even some of the neon billboards here on the strip are advertising those toll free numbers for people to call try and get reunited with their loved ones and of course the big question is no motive what drove or impelled or possibly. motivated this man stephen paddick. to do this all accounts he was retiring he would unremarkable person he exhibited no signs of any mental instability we're told police say they had no record even his. close relatives like his brother in florida said that the this is something completely out of the blue had no explanation for it now of course paddock is dead so we'll never know what from his own testimony what may have happened but police will
10:08 pm
certainly want to interview his female companion woman named marilou donley she is believed to be in the philippines right now and certainly she may hold the key to some may hold some partial answers to the all of these questions reynolds of the latest there from las vegas from thank you. and now we can go to the white house speak to our correspondent there kimberly halkett kimberly we already as we saw earlier in the program had reaction from the president he called it an act of pure evil and in the past half hour or so we also saw a minute of silence at the white house. right a very somber mood here at the white house as we saw the president along with the first lady malani a trump the vice president and the second lady karen pentz all on the south portico of the white house in front of staff that are congregated there to observe a moment of silence for the victims the number of casualties still climbing in las
10:09 pm
vegas the president taking on the role as we often see presidents do it times like this is the comforter in chief certainly donald trump doing that as he prepared and spoke to americans who were waking up to this news many not realizing what had happened until they turned on their radios and televisions this morning in fact not only saying this was an act of evil but also the it's a time for the united states to come together as one as citizens in their grief and so certainly the president trying to unite the country the flag at half staff over the white house is still americans still can't believe there's such shock and disbelief at the large number of dead that number again still climbing but also to reaction from members of congress who say right now including the house speaker that this evil tragedy horrifies us all and we are united in our morning and in our shock and kimberly as you say that the president trying to unite the country right
10:10 pm
now but if there's one thing that the united states is the vide it over it's gun control law and even though the details are still very sketchy about what actually pushed even patrick to act the way he did and how we managed to get his guns and ammunition that gun debate has been reignited hasn't it. certainly has and it's very hard to understand living outside the united states why it is that americans care so deeply at least some about retaining that right to bear arms that is unique to the u.s. constitution certainly there are those who are already pointing out that there are many cases where gun save lives that are simply not reported because of the large loss of life but again as we see these tragedies there are those calls for stricter gun laws as well from others on the other side of the debate on the liberal side of the political spectrum certainly there is that call that has been going on at the white house brass press briefing where we had sarah huckabee sanders speaking and
10:11 pm
defending the fact that the united states believes that this is not the time to be having this policy discussion with regard to stricter gun control i think one of the things that we don't want to do is. try to create laws that won't. create stop these types of things from happening i think if you look to chicago where you had over four thousand victims of gun related crimes last year they have the strictest gun laws in the country that certainly hasn't helped to there so i think we have to when that time comes for those conversations to take place then i think we need to look at things that may actually have the real impact. still this debate will wage on and certainly i can tell you right now the president will undoubtedly weigh in and has had shifting views on guns in before he was a candidate for president of the united states compared to where he is now but the again the press secretary saying this is something not to be discussed at the
10:12 pm
moment for now it is about the president comforting so many victims of so many tragedies on tuesday he will be traveling to puerto rico for the victims of hurricanes there on wednesday he heads to las vegas where he will be meeting with the families and the first responders coping with the loss of their loved ones well kimberly we will of course be following all developments on the story in the hours and days to come for the moment though kimberly how it at the white house thank you now catalonia is leader has called for international mediation over his region's attempt to break away from spain almost nine hundred people were injured when riot police tried to stop sunday's referendum regional officials are saying ninety percent of voters chose secession from spain despite another expectedly low turnout catalan leader catalyst for the moment says the e.u. could step in as mediator but has accused brussels of being timid and lacking courage well the results of the referendum have left those catalans who don't want
10:13 pm
to see the region leave spain worried about what will happen next called pinholes be meeting some of them. with the referendum result overwhelmingly in favor of catalonia breaking away those who want spain to remain united becoming fearful of either going to. what they've done is divide scotland society of divided families and marriages. to explore the fault lines i had to meet cattle an artist porsche. says. getting ready for war no stranger to controversy with his politically charged photos but he says rising intolerance is forcing him for wants to keep his anti secession opinions to himself if you not with them you're with franco that's how radicalized they go. it is a scourge and it's going to get worse i think the fracture that this election
10:14 pm
course it's a reversible as long as we have the same players ruling the country. believes repression of the catalan language and culture on the general franco's dictatorship which ended in the mid one nine hundred seventy s. may have fueled the independent spirit yet that doesn't change his mind i'm not here to rebuild my grandfather i got my own life i'm looking to the future i love people from madrid i got better friends in madrid so everything that my father grandfather was telling me it doesn't match my reality that's what it is i'm not going to really bench times of change a law across town i head to a social club for men like retired farm worker danielle cab on year zero he migrated here from the neighboring arab gone region in the one nine hundred fifty s. but feel strong loyalty to the rest of the country. catalonia is vibrant economy has
10:15 pm
drawn several million workers from poorer corners of spain and abroad. they will never have independent catalonia is a province of spain and always will be that's how it should be the people behind this referendum must be half crazy they'll never achieve it. but that's why i'm leaders i determined to try my best that seems destined to deepen between neighbors and friends call panel al-jazeera barcelona spain. still to come on the program cameroon's government continues its crackdown on independence protestors after soldiers shot dead eight people on sunday and two women plead not guilty as they go on trial in malaysia for the airport murder of kim jong half brother.
