i'm going to give you just a short synopsis of our updates and then we have other individuals here standing behind me they're going to make some comments reference or other issues associated with the today's events. so. there's two things were attempting to achieve one is we have to finish processing the scenes we had three separate scenes we are working now actually it will be four at this point so we have the thirty second floor of the room at the mandalay bay we have the event location the house and the ski and then now we have swat standing by getting ready to hit the house and northern nevada. at this point we did that in the last briefing i was unable to tell you what we retrieved from the house and the skeet we retrieved in the excess and how many farms was an excess of eighteen additional firearms
1:03 am
some explosives and several thousand rounds of ammo along with some electronic devices that we are evaluating at this point. i mention this what is about to breach the house up in northern nevada and then i'm going to give you an update on the casualty numbers we are currently standing at five twenty seven for individuals injured and individuals that have died or passed away fifty nine. so what we're doing at this point we have several people calling about personal items located at the stadium we are not done processing that scene yet and once we are done processing the scene we will make arrangements for people that attended the stadium they believe they have personal items there to respond to the area and we will help you retrieve your items. at this point i want to bring greg cassell forward from the county fire department and he will give you an update on the

1:05 am
a combination of police department fire department the coroner's office and other local entities working together to provide the services for the families and for the coming that are coming into town or that are still here trying to handle what has happened with their loved ones they're providing all kinds of services as the sheriff said many places have stepped up to provide flights housing food transportation and many other things that's it's a wonderful thing for a community have come forward and done this facility is located in the south all the convention center as to and it's pretty much taking up the entire south hall there's also a donation drop off area that's been set up to facilitate people want to drop off nonperishable goods over there at that site water and so forth those and the entrance to that is off of sierra vista right just west of this convention center area command metro building at brown and sierra vista. so i'd like to take an opportunity right now to thank the men and women of the fire departments the clark county fire department obviously very near and dear to my heart. and that was great

kessel fire chief there we were hearing that news conference earlier we heard from the sheriff joseph lombardo of car county which is where les vegas is just giving an update about the last vegas shoots and we'll be dipping in and all that one thing we did find out is that when the house all of the gunmen was searched unless keith which is near les vegas eighteen additional firearms were found so we will be keeping an eye on that news conference but while we're doing that let's go to rob reynolds who is in less vegas now for us rob i guess he has will be coming out in the next few hours or so what do you think the main points of the investigation will be what do you think the main focuses of officers a vest against this. well of course there will be
1:07 am
a. powerful. urge to find a motive for this attack and whether with the amount of planning that went into it whether anyone else was involved although they have said that stephen paddick the deceased gunman was acting as a lone wolf still want to check very carefully to see if he had it he associates who might have known anything who might perhaps facilitated his purchase. of firearms and note also barbara that she from the bartow mentioned that they found explosive devices at his house and miss kate that's about a little over one hundred kilometers from. this city of las vegas other questions will be for i think the the broader. phrasing of this incident how to keep people safe in the future if you have venues like these that are open and relatively unguarded how can you prevent so. one who has
1:08 am
access to this stream li powerful military grade board minutes from taking advantage of those facts i think also there will be a public. inquiry or in poll in the court of public opinion if you will about the definition of terrorism whether this act constitutes terrorism and police are not calling it such but whereas other acts such as the pulse nightclub attack in in orlando last year do constitute terrorism so there's that question of labeling and of course that raises questions of questions of of race and religion and very complex and sensitive a series of questions that go along with it and i'll think i think that the police will face some questions as to whether anyone saw anything going on with
1:09 am
this man who a man's this tremendous armory of weapons in his home and was able to sneak one more than ten guns some would say a nineteen or so guns into this public hotel of that nobody saw anything going on nobody saw anything amiss was he that much of a mastermind it doesn't seem like he's anything he was an extraordinary really adept man so these are some of the questions i think that are going to be coming out either immediately or in the future barbara from rannells with the latest from les vegas rob thank you and for more on the last vegas shooting was joined by john matthews farm out assen in texas he's the executive director of the community safety institute and a former police officer sir thank you so much for joining us here on al-jazeera so we just had some more details come out from that news conference based on the available information that we've had now and really in the past twelve hours or so
1:10 am
what kind of image what has stood out for you about the this shooter in las vegas. well this is an absolutely horrific event and to me would stands out is the planning the preparation that he read it the room three days in advance the room that overlooked the event he could see the fences being constructed he could see where people were coming going in and out he could see the interest eager is the main exits where people were using so there was a ton of planning apparently set up not one but two shooting platforms that means that he looked at his hotel room and said you know i can set up a kill zone a year but if i go out this window i can set up a larger kill zone expanding the number of targets that he had down there so a lot of planning a lot of preparation and moving the guns of the ammo up into the hotel room so he could prepare for it and even to the point i heard of putting up cameras so he knew
1:11 am
when the police were about to get him lots of planning lots of preparation this is obviously premeditated hotels in the last vegas trip are absolutely huge i mean there casinos their morals and then their hotels as well but this it's still not surprise you that he was able to bring all of those rifles up to his room no you know i travel a lot i'm in hotels a lot and really once you check in i could go to my car ten times and bring a different bag up no one would ever suspect anything especially if i put it in a regular looking suitcase you know we don't have checkpoints we don't have baggage dominators we're not looking for that and certainly not looking for someone to carry hundred thousands arounds of ammunition up to their room so no it's fairly easy not just in vegas but in most of the tales that i've ever been to to carry whatever you want to the room and i mean from all we have so far which in a way isn't much what have you made of the profile of the shooter and is there such
1:12 am
a thing as a stereotypical mass shooter. yeah i really don't think there is we've had mass shooters of every different type those that have had mental health issues we've had mass shooters that were terrorist we've had measures that after the school shootings in the ninety's that simply said we wanted a higher body count i mean it could be something very complex going on with this individual he could be an injustice collector as we call it he feels that life is done in wrong and society has done him wrong he could simply be a lone wolf somebody that did not make a mark and said listen i'm going to go out of this life and no one to get to know i lived i have to do something big i have to do something that people are never going to forget in he wants to be infamous so i don't think there's really a profile that we can attach to this right now i think what we want to do is learn the lessons from it see what we can teach the concert goers the crowd goers the citizens so what they can do to protect themselves and i'm sure this is no surprise
1:13 am
to you but most people outside the u.s. see a definite correlation between american quite relax the gun laws and the fact that unfortunately these shootings are more common in the u.s. than in than in other countries what do you make of that correlation seeing as of course the gun debate is going to reemerge as it always does after these mass shootings in the u.s. well barbara i can tell you after the mass shootings we always talk about guns but the last several times i've been on television have been the manchester attack which was explosives i've been on after knife attacks car bombs truck bombs or just running people over and i think we need to understand that there are evil people in this world there are people that want to do evil deeds and they're going to get their hands on the weapons that they think they can use to inflict as much damage as possible and i think we've seen that all across the globe john matthews executive director from the community safety institute joining us from texas sir
