a family business handed down from generation to generation but when this funeral director retires will his son continue the tradition i don't think he was actually before just like i don't feel like i was actually built for a difficult choice for an al-jazeera producer caught between two worlds well it's really by tending to the dead with a living better an intimate portrait of an industry most encounter only fleetingly al-jazeera correspondent death in the family at this time. palestinian unity fatah and hamas agree to set their differences aside and govern together.
8:01 pm
hello i'm barbara starr you're watching al-jazeera life the from london also coming up on the program the u.s. and israel pull out of the un's culture and education body accusing it of anti is really bias spain's national day marked by a parade of unity in the grid but the mood is more divided in barcelona and free after five years in taliban cards a u.s. canadian couple and their three children are released in pakistan. thank you for joining us rival palestinian political movements fatah and hamas have signed a deal to help reconcile their decade long split negotiators from the groups have been cairo for talks on a deal for a unity government in gaza the palestinian authority will take full administration of control of gaza by december the first that profit border crossing in gaza will
8:02 pm
be handed over to the unity government and it will be operated by the presidential guard of president mahmoud abbas that a shy jeweled for november the first now around three thousand police officers from the palestinian authority will be redeployed to gaza as part of the unity agreement which will also see it take over the civil and security sectors previous sticking points have included control over the arsenal of her masses armed wing as well as the fate of thousands of her masses public servants while no detailed information was given on this a both sides say that all the problems will be sorted out herefore said has more now from ramallah in the occupied west bank. we expected to hear i think more of more of a statement of the precise nature of this agreement some of these details have been coming out in dribs and drabs through the day even we heard from the resistance groups inside who had a news conference they said they weren't entirely ofay with exactly what the terms
8:03 pm
of this agreement were there are some key targets that have been put in place for instance november the first for having full control over the borders under the palestinian authority presidential security guards even there is some potential for problems the rafa crossing is currently undergoing some redevelopment on the egyptian side will it be ready for the palestinian authority security services to fully take over from the number the first will it really happen on the ground it's a real prize for hamas the control of that crossing of course it is part of this agreement also december the first for the unity government will president abbas him self mahmoud abbas travel to gaza there's there was talk of him going within a month and we've heard from another fatah figure saying that that the there isn't really a precise time scale yet people saying that if he does go he won't be a visitor he will have to go as the former president of the gaza strip so on the one hand you can look at it as did the head of the delegation. in cairo saying that
8:04 pm
there are these metrics in place there are time scales and targets and that's why this will work along with the egyptian backing where previous agreements didn't work you could also see those as opportunities for mutual trust to be undermined if those targets aren't met if things don't go according to plan on the ground people here that we've been speaking to over the last few days have been saying that obviously they are in favor of this some people telling us that you know that even psychologically here it's very important for the two sides of this divide to reconcile and to become one palestinian people once again are saying if it fails well we're already at. anyway with no prospect of a peace deal in the offing how much worse can things get as for the politicians here i mean we were speaking to the head of the central committee this actually general the central committee. he's saying that we don't want to go there just to provide services and allow hamas to have its militias and allow it to be governing
8:05 pm
underground while we do the you know the difficult things in terms of addressing the monetary crisis in gaza we want a fully unified national consensus not just on the details in the gaza strip but going forward how we address the occupation how we we address the issues of war and peace let's get more analysis now from al-jazeera senior political analyst one my one following on from what harry force it was saying what sticking points do you foresee that might come to the fore when this reconciliation well of this is we're just at the beginning of a process that's a process that that's ten years too late but be that as it may it's starting or not good note with lots of optimism popular support so it has a certain momentum. but the coming challenges are plentiful it starts with what you do with security in the west bank and gaza what do you do with the
8:06 pm
conciliation what do you do in terms of. the legislative council and its convening in terms of elections in terms of the next. national government and so on so for the national unity government so there's lots and even once they finished all of that barbara not a single inch of palestine would have been liberated so all of that is just for them to run the sewerage all of that is for them to make sure there is electricity water and to make sure that people have you know a minimum not a certain normality under occupation i mean the administration and effectively of the territories i mean it's interesting obviously you talk about the you know the palestinian cause and if we think back to ten years ago i mean one of the main reasons for the split was that the international community didn't recognize hamas who had won an election which then takes me to the question where does this lead any potential possible peace process what's how is israel going going to see this
8:07 pm
as assuming that the the reconciliation actually moves forward. and to be honest i mean the palestinians twenty four years after the failed peace process the basically dead and buried especially in the presence of prime minister netanyahu and president from there's absolutely zero horizon for any diplomatic process with the israelis that meets the minimum requirements of the most moderate palestinians so are the palestinians hamas and fatah the main factions would also have to address what is it that they're gaining out of the peace process and do they want to continue to pursue the same peace process with the same israeli partner quote unquote and the same american sponsor which is on the trumpets probably worse than obama but i guess them being united does strengthen their hand somehow doesn't it it does swing the other hand. and. you know to be a bit more nuanced we should be clear about what is going on here this whole much
8:08 pm
much of the process is about running the autonomous territories in the west bank and gaza that's it so it's about the palestine national authority and the legislative council governing those territories in terms of diplomacy it's the palestine liberation organization the p.l.o. that the rules that are present all palestinians including those in east jerusalem including those in lebanon in jordan in the refugee areas and source of force so the pakistan liberation organization that represents all palestinians is not for the time being under scrutiny in terms of gaza the west bank preparation they want on the long term to reform the p.l.o. in order to include have mass in it but for the time being all the diplomatic agreements will continue to be honored by president abbas as the head of the p.l.o. so i think much of these arrangements do not infringe on that the productive process again the question is for the palestinian is whether they're getting anything at all out of the plus senior political analyst. thank you thank you.
8:09 pm
the united states and israel will pull out of unesco that's the united nations cultural agency that the city by the u.s. state department comes into effect at the end of the center washington says the move comes off the back of what it describes as the need for fundamental reform in the organization and continuing anti israel bias well in the last hour the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has said that he's following suit and has ordered preparations to begin a four israel's withdrawal. well you know school is headquartered in paris from where our correspondent the tasha butler joins us a very busy room behind you it's busy times at unesco of course what official reaction have we had from the u.s. is withdrawal and now israel's as well. and of course it's not good
8:10 pm
news when you have members of an organization which is it was set up to promote peace and unity and consensus saying that they don't want to be any part of it any more now say that they haven't heard directly from israel they've just heard the reports like everyone else but in terms of the united states is of course something that everybody here is talking about there's no great surprise because i don't tom had indicated that he may want to pull out all the u.n. says cultural agency that it would be too critical of one of its closest allies israel and this relationship is before to anyway because it was back in two thousand and eleven that you know scored first recognized i should say that made to the palestinians a full member whole fiasco that infuriated the u.s. they think cuts that funding some eighty million dollars a year huge amounts of money for this agency it really did strike quite to blow but
8:11 pm
as i said to no great surprise perhaps that this new steps being taken the u.s. says that it now looks out at the end of next year and that is something the director general the outgoing director general irina bokova says that she regrets deeply. i express my deep regrets. remember what i said in two thousand and eleven already when the united states a little schizo voting rights and suspended payment to the united states met the poor in a school and unesco my thoughts for the united states in fact if you go back into history we will see not only that the. united states is a founding member of going to school the whole idea. that you can build peace through education science a culture communication. is basically an american idea. and the threshold of this of course is coming as unesco is voting for its next the director
8:12 pm
general of the session that we could be hearing with the any day now. what i can tell you is that voting is a very at least for the seating here in paris and we still do not have the name of the next director general. it seems that the photo i should say was very close you've got three candidates left to make sport of cats out front and egypt so far tonight's results show that the cattery candidate former culture minister ahmed al corey is a slight in front yes twenty two votes just ahead of the second candidate the french as of late or so for the culture minister she's on eighteen votes egyptian candidates in third place so still no direct it generally means that this vote goes on to another day fifth day we called on friday and what happens is you have fifty eight members of the executive who they are the ones that are making the candidate so we have to find out who it will be on friday this week because one where we're
8:13 pm
not vote is forced through whoever it is they will be facing some very tricky and turbulent times you'd imagine going ahead here you know sco maybe will be somebody to create to persuade the united states to reverse that decision there's still time for us to move to a year but it was said to be somebody who's going to have to know how to kill divisions with the with the latest that unesco headquarters in paris natasha thank you. the pakistani army has rescued a family held captive by the haqqani network an armed organization aligned to the afghan taliban the army says that canadian joshua boyle his american wife caitlin coleman and their three children were saved in a probable district along the pakistan afghanistan border after a tip off by u.s. intelligence agencies they were kidnapped in afghanistan in two thousand and twelve while they were backpacking. well president on com has been talking about the rescue michaud mission and says it shows that pakistan is altering requests to do
8:14 pm
more for regional security and i want to thank the pakistani government you want to thank pakistan they they were very hard on this and i believe they're starting to respect the united states again it's very important i think a lot of country right now a lot of countries are starting to respect the united states of america once again we hope to see this type of cooperation and teamwork in helping secure the release of remaining hostages and in our future joint counterterrorism operations you're watching lots more to come on the program including a double blow for kenyan opposition supporters ahead of a controversial election or even we'll bring all the details on that plus. i'm kristen salumi in manhattan where the chinese artist ai wei wei has painted one of his latest cultures gold coming out i'll tell you which famous new yorker he's
8:15 pm
trying to reach. hello there are still a few showers around turkey in the caucasus and caspian sea but generally speaking the clouds been taken in that direction and that's where the shoutin are on their way however given that we've seen the change of season we know now to watch out for dropping temperatures and a change in the seasonal winds and they were paid already temperature wise was to hover around the middle twenty's to tehran middle thirty's in iraq low twenty's running down to israel in particular truce was forecast to twenty two degrees but look at the winds because they have picked up recently is now blowing it blows out of iraq and depending on exactly directions on the dusty oh clear slightly dusty road it runs down through kuwait and qatar and down towards u.a.e. and then it turns into the empty quarter it will be around for
8:16 pm
a while now so it means. tend to be in the middle thirty's rather thing else but turns around again and picks up we still got forty one forecast from mecca and you see the increase in the amount of class. going back to somalia but it is a result of the monsoon disappearing the southwest monsoon coming back again and being crowded amman and maybe saudi arabia. largely because the height above sea level is just twenty five.

respect america again. spain has celebrated its national day with a massive military show of unity while the pressure remains on the catalan leader the say whether he has declared independence or not military parades flyovers and marches to place dread with smaller demonstrations in barcelona reports. that the last fortnight hadn't been dramatic enough the spectacle of national day provided the finishing touch madrid laid it on thick the whole military display the flags of the region's uses an opportunity to say to the council just look how united we nobody will to independence the crowd of course loyal supporters of king and country. today we celebrate the day of spain which is the day of all spanish people but there's a group of us spaniards who are bent on breaking up our shared country. they should
8:19 pm
understand that we belong to one country which is not just a republic which the arpu. before. for the first time in thirty years the national police were invited to rapturous applause. the government said the decision to honor them came after the barcelona attack you know just this is of course the same national police which own referendum day tear gassed on fire rubber bullets at spanish citizens in catalonia. six of them are incredibly provocative it would read wanted to rub the caps alarms noses in the does this is how you do it the first year in barcelona the pro independence faction held its own protest march it was tiny compared to madrid they're on the back foot now the splits in the movement being exploited by the national governments but how they hated the spanish national police being celebrated by madrid. i mean it's shocking as the national police are
8:20 pm
occupying forces it's as if they sent in the tanks we don't want them here they're not our police force from a government that does not represent us. and as if to demonstrate how divided catalonia remains there was a simple ten years approach spanish wryly the police had to make sure they were at some distance from each other and one occasionally failed and the prospect of them pro-capital on demonstrators made it entirely clear what they thought of one another. so much it knows it has the catalan president in a trap now whichever way he decides on the independence question he risks losing part of his base on this day it felt like the dream was in a triumphant mood. recently al-jazeera in madrid. baghdad has denied accusations that it's planning an imminent attack on the autonomous kurdish region of iraq kurdish authorities closed roads overnight saying that they received a warning from the iraqi military of
