the incident happened almost three hours ago close to the west side highway in lower manhattan. i definitely saw the car damage i heard i heard a loud bang the car was totalled at that point the guy coming trip was injured. when i heard. there was a big. he's got a gun and everything is running. rockaway park and i called the police well at a news conference a little earlier mayor bill de blasio described today as a painful day from new york let me be clear to based on the information we have at this moment this was an act of terror and a particularly cowardly act of terror. aimed at innocent civilians aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them we at this moment based on the information we have we know of eight innocent people who have

lost their lives and over a dozen more injured. legislators gabrielle is on the joins us live now from the scene so gabriel in that news conference about half an hour ago a lot did come out with found that eight people have now died six died at the scene and two on the way to hospital around thirteen injured we got a bit of a chronology but we still don't really know anything about the perpetrator himself we know he's a twenty nine year old man or why he might have done this. yeah no motive whatsoever released by the police on what drove this twenty nine year old still unidentified male to drive this rented truck down the westside highway bicycle path according to police this incident took place a little after three p.m. here in new york city the suspect this twenty nine year old male appearing to police drove his truck down this bike path that is significant because that's one
1:04 am
of the most well used bike and running pass in all of the new york city he drove it about a block or two according to police ramming through people there and pedestrians that were on that bike path before exit ing back onto the street and at that point he hit a school bus shortly after that is when police say the suspect got out of the truck and started running through the streets and you might be so being some cell phone video of that right now suspect run through the streets of brandished two weapons according to police and that is when some other police officers arrived on the scene and started firing their weapons shot the suspect the suspect went down and they immediately took him into custody he was shot in the abdomen police say and he is now at a hospital police say that. at eleven people or maybe even a few more were seriously injured aside from the eight that died there in serious

but non-life threatening conditions i can tell you in the immediate aftermath out as this shooting transpired it was absolute chaos here in lower manhattan near the tri beca neighborhood of new york city as as soon as the word got out that there was this shooting it was a huge police presence not only regular police but anti terror police as well that all descended here in this area and media at lee to contain this situation this happened just about four or five blocks north of the world. trade center site where nine eleven happened this is it's an area that has a lot of office buildings it is also a high density for tourists as well but clearly indications that this could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for the officers that took this this man down in the immediate aftermath of this i will say that the governor of new york did say that while this is a terrorist incident or they're investigating it as such there is no indications of
1:06 am
any wider threat yeah he did say that the news conference a little earlier as we were mentioning this happened in broad daylight it was afternoon three p.m. a very busy time and people you know leaving work early schoolchildren leaving school now we can see dusk is forming there will be night soon and this is a very busy evening in new york across the united states because it's halloween so what kind of security precautions have you seen around the city right now and what have the n.y.p.d. said that they will do just i guess to reassure people even though they did mention they don't think that he that the attacker was part of a wider group. yeah it is following night here in the united states and that means that a lot of people are leaving work a little bit earlier this evening so at three three thirty right as this incident was taking place there were more people on the streets and there might have
1:07 am
normally been on a on a normal day there is actually a hollowing parade happening here actually in this very neighborhood near where the shooting took place this evening that's going to start in about an hour or so you know you see people behind me as might see some with costumes and some children out on the streets as well police say that that hollowing parade will go on as planned but they say they will there will be extensive police presence more than double of what their normally would be already new york city has a huge police presence on nights such as this when there are events going on such as this but now police say that there will be an even stronger presence at key areas of the city in and out of bridges and tunnels as well as of events taking place here in the city for hollowing so the governor mayor and also the police chief basically saying don't be alarmed there are going to be extensive heavily armed police all over the city but basically carry on with their day as new yorkers
1:08 am
normally would and as you can see we're only a few blocks from where the incident took place three to be exact and he's you can see there's still a lot of people milling about going on with their evening here in the city people going to events getting off work going home so it's kind of speaks to the resilience of this city that's had to deal with such was situation such as this past i think it was the mayor bill de blasio said you're in that news conference that new yorkers will just be new yorkers and that's how they will handle this said that rielle is on the with the latest there from the scene for a moment. lawyers for social media giants facebook twitter and google have been testifying at a congressional hearing in washington d.c. it's part of the investigation into whether russia used the social media to influence last year's u.s. election the three companies have revealed that they found more evidence of russian

solution that they suggest has to take their shareholders and their interest and growth in mind so one suggestion that they've kept making over and over is to be able to police themselves using machine learning and artificial intelligence and i think that you know the the hearings show how how many holes there are in that approach there are some things that you know only humans might be able to detect and perhaps they weren't even looking for the right things if if the goal is to have as many advertisers as possible reach as many people as possible that's what made it such an effective tool for for people who wanted to interfere. or meanwhile u.s. president donald trump has this miss the importance of a former campaign aide indicted in the russian inquiry branding him a liar on twitter it was revealed on monday that george bush papadopoulos has pleaded guilty to lying to the f.b.i. about his russian contacts the president once described the thirty year old as an
