6:03 pm
stronger and that immigration is that force and will overcome any attempts to impose any over them from powers either inside or outside of our country long live the people of lebanon. live to al-jazeera as in test hide who is in the lebanese capital beirut into has a resignation that came as a shock to many what has been the reaction so far. indeed fall is very shocking day in lebanese politics here many people really get the news that the prime minister has stepped down the job that he's only been in really for around eleven months or so and many people have thought that least up until now that although it was somewhat shaky government that it was working that this thirty member unity cabinet that had been put together after a two and a half year political vacuum in which lebanon was without a president seemed to be working laws were being passed and now here we are the
6:04 pm
reaction has been pretty swift let's start with the president michel on he himself being very careful in his statement he's traveling right now he's in kuwait to him saying that he's not going to make any public statements until mr hariri comes back to lebanon although there are some questions as to whether or not mr hariri will come back to lebanon we do have to remember that he lived in self-imposed exile for around three years after his last government collapse in two thousand and eleven in saudi arabia but in saying that there's been other reaction across the political spectrum of course his own party saying that they support the decision that they did fear for his life although we haven't seen any sort of evidence from any lebanese security forces suggesting that there was a viable threat to mr hariri his life but there has also been sharp criticism as well some questioning why this decision was taken and more importantly why it was announced in saudi arabia others poking fun of mr hariri but it's
6:05 pm
a statement that's coming out of test run from the foreign ministry at least an advisor to the foreign ministry who have described this as a mistake saying that he certainly is not making the decision in the best interests of lebanon but again the overriding sort of sense here folly is shock and we will be hearing from iran in just a moment well it will be going live to. in tehran for reaction from there inches as far as lebanese politics are concerned obviously the political situation has always been very fragile in lebanon it took them forever to put together this government which lasted less than a year so what's next who's going to fill the vacuum. at this stage nobody knows you can imagine that there's a lot of go there's a lot going on behind the scenes that a lot of political horse trading if you will is going on the trying to figure out
6:06 pm
a way who can be put into this position if somebody will be put into this position of prime minister or if we're going to see a nother political vacuum a very long political vacuum and the concern is that if this political vacuum continues what it could mean not only for lebanon but also for the region as well and whether this could result in these very long simmering issues that are that occur here in lebanon of those coming up to the surface of course the war in syria has tracked a lot of attention certainly a key interest for many of the region's nations and of course lebanon as well but those simmering tensions most namely with israel many fear that this could lead to some sort of. issue between hezbollah and israel and that is really the concern at this stage but again it's really just speculation as many are still reeling from this announcement by mr hariri in just type in beirut thank you very
6:07 pm
much for that m.t.s. now another crucial side to this is lebanon's complex system of governance that was created after a fifteen year civil war that ended in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine part of it is divided equally among muslims and christians the most powerful political forces include shia and sunni muslims maronite and greek orthodox christians and members of the druze faith under an early apax lebanon's president must be imagined i question the prime minister a sunni muslim and the speaker of parliament a shia muslim external political alliances add further complications sad hariri and his sunni political movements are backed by saudi arabia while the shia rivals hezbollah. with iran so let's go to iran and speak to al-jazeera zain bazarov a who is in the capital tehran sad really pointing the finger at iran accusing iran of destabilizing lebanese politics and the region what's the reaction in tehran. well following we have not heard from the
6:08 pm
top leadership in iran as yet but we do have some new information for you the level of missiles have been speaking and just in the last few hours the advisor to the speaker of parliament ali larijani has said that the decision did come as a surprise to him are. we he said that the decision by the lebanese prime minister to step down was clearly taken hastily and again reiterated the point from the foreign ministry that it will not be good for the government of the people of lebanon and again renewed calls for any future. political upheaval to be handled through dialogue because for solidarity of the lebanese people that's a message that iran's government has been putting out to all of the flavor spreads enemies to resolve any sort of this bitter conflict of dialogue as a pastry conflict or division and it's really to push the point home that this did
6:09 pm
come as a surprise just on friday. a senior advisor to the supreme leader himself was in beirut for a conference met with the lebanese prime minister and the message that the iranian government put out to its own people and to the world was that with that the relationship with the lebanese government was a positive one as it was a cooperative point and that lebanon enjoyed iran's ongoing political support so certainly this decision is as much of a surprise here into iran as the results were. in tehran thank you very much zain for bringing us reaction from iran there are i bring in abraham fray out to the news great he's a professor of conflict resolution at the doha institute for graduate studies i want to read to you for us a comment here from one of our viewers on facebook who says. who says i think he meaning the former now lebanese prime minister saad hariri was persuaded to resign so much to unpack it right what do you make first of all of the fact that he made this announcement in riyadh and not they went well actually this is not. the nose i
6:10 pm
say the nose is not that is ignition itself but the news is that the resignation was made from riyadh and that's where actually the major emphasis of this whole development that it was made from riyadh so in a way it was surprising because no one expected this at this time but it was not too surprising because the context of the saudi iran conflict is on a scale ation and the last few months right and. has always been a battleground it was sidelined in for some time but now i was seeing that they've been and is brought back to as a battleground for the ones he persuaded to resign as our viewer abdullah asks do the saudis have a hand in this basically well i'm not sure actually i probably might grow to be even further i say i'm not sure that he was persuaded i think there is a possibility that he was instructed because i mean that elation issue between
6:11 pm
prime minister saad hariri and the odds is is very strong there is a verse long lines between the two and at some point when escalation takes place like the way that we have we have seen of the past few months i'm not sure exactly actually after the tums visit that he had summit where everything has been pointing to the same direction to the same source actually of that everything is related to riyadh so at this point if there is a decision and the indicators are passed you once all suggest that there is a decision of escalation right then suddenly they might not have room to see no one right way and that's why you probably were saying he probably was instructed either you will be part of this alliance and proceed this with all of your own your aunt so many comments and questions on this story brame sad every we we know is anti syria and a few years opponent of hezbollah members of which have been accused of directly being involved in the assassination of his father rafik hariri he said. today when
6:12 pm
he made the announcement that there was a threat on his life is this a credible threat of this threat thing has always been there since i mean for the past years and since he was actually staying in paris we have not seen any nor developments that suggest there is a credible third so for that for the for that reason i think it's one of the things that was mentioned in the past and it still is one of the reasons and again i think it's the fact that he made it from riyadh. i mean so just that it's no secret that this is part of a larger strategy that the strategy as to confront iran and saudi arabia is not the secret of a broader than zardari speaks about it openly that there is a strategy to confront iranian meddling in our affairs and that's exactly the same
6:13 pm
wording that he used in his as a gratian. about fears and that's actually where there's nothing new in terms of a credible threat or others but it's part of the larger strategy as we have seen thank you very much for that a brain event re-add from the doe hines tutor of graduate studies thank you now as we heard saad hariri criticize iran and its lebanese ally hezbollah two players who have a massive role in all things are playing out in syria right now they along with russia have helped president bashar assad's forces win big victories against isaw and rebel groups on friday they won back the oil rich city of dera zoar eyesores last major urban stronghold in syria russian jets have since been hitting the surrounding countryside targeting i saw fighters hiding there there also firing on another city called abu command which lies on the border with iraq some of the only territory i saw has nets. hashemite baron now for an update on the situation in
6:14 pm
syria he's in gaza and take on the turkey syria border hashem so a push by the syrian army to regain territory in the east what's the latest first on efforts to retake become oblast city under eyeful control on that border between iraq and syria only russia is replicating the scenario that it did in places like iraq which is basically the moment is confronted with isis the start of a massive campaign of strikes to ensure that the defense lines of i still underlie and then the syrian army which is now moving from the east to the town of may at the end is going to pass its campaign by shelling the positions of i still and then move into the heart of the town because of it just a matter of hours before those confrontations started videos on the ground say that dozens of people were killed or killed. during those strikes however this time is different in a book come out it says that the syrian army is going to call today its military
6:15 pm
operation with the iraqi military which is now in aleppo i said for the time being you sound wish between two armies which are vastly superior in arms and also in weapons the iraqi army in the south and the syrian army in the west and i think the isis is left with very few options they want to continue to fly these absolutely no way the consensus by what about the s.p.f. hashim they still control some very important oil fields in in the east what is going to be their next move as the syrian military advances. they've been advancing from the know all the way to. zoar and they also control some oil fields which are not really that far from. however i don't think this will move further because then they will have to cross the euphrates towards a book and this will be of them in a confrontation against the syrian army they are a syrian army has served very the moment it depletes isolated in
6:16 pm
a book about it is determined to push back towards the north to recapture the house like i was our major strongholds for the and i think the moment for a confrontation between the two the syrian army and the kurds is really imminent. me the turkey syria border thank you very much for that hashem now one look at the colorful patchwork that makes up syria's map gives us an idea of just how complicated the situation remains i saw in black a squeeze to the east now iran says a syrian army which holds the red areas will soon advance on rock a city which u.s. backed fighters seized from my soul last month well i mean i'll bring in maryland and he is the director of policy analysis at the doha institute for graduate affairs so the syrian army they've basically said they will recapture every single territory they lost and this puts them on a collision course with the s.d.f.
6:17 pm
forces which are backed by the americans of course this is going to be the next big battle now not that i saw is out of the picture are they going to be confronting each other and many of us actually expect that the next main conflict in syria is going to be based on ethnic backgrounds rather than sectarian one over the past few years you have been seeing actually iran allies and saudi arabia allies are fighting this experience or somehow in syria right to the actually we are seeing a different and different kind of war that is going to take place in my opinion over the next maybe a few months but. and kurds this time between arabs supported by iran russia on the one hand and the current supported by and by the united states on the other hand we have already seen i mean this is maybe the final push for the. titanic crease for the control of eastern syria because the united states have been trying over the past few months actually to deny iran the sort of core
6:18 pm
a door that links syria and iraq together whereas iran is doing its best in order to have this geographic connection between the two countries that would give it actually an access granted access from iran iraq syria to lebanon to the military now if that happens could we see the americans and russians being dragged into the syrian conflict further could we see them getting directly involved or is there reluctance and perhaps we'll see them negotiate a political settlement because they don't want to get involved this is a war by proxy that has been like this for the past few years actually where the russians are backing the syrian regime and the united states backing fears the syrian opposition factions and then the syria democratic forces the backbone of which are the kurds so here are the americans and it will be been very much the best in the relationship between president putin on the one hand and the administration of president from on the other hand if i if the if the relationship the tree with between the two the two men and this is
6:19 pm
a it was widely expected because a given the investigation in the united states over the russia alleged role in the elections of last year if the situation deteriorates further between the two countries are going to see this war by proxy escalated between the two big superpower in syria now producer raise an end trysting an important question earlier today that we often forget to ask if the russians marwan hadn't entered this war with the conflict in syria be over already i mean would would bashar assad be gone if the russians hadn't entered this goal i think i think most probably because. in two thousand and fifteen in the summer of two thousand and fifteen bashar al assad himself actually he admitted almost admitted defeat in this conflict and he said that he would not be able to actually defend every single city of syrian territories this is actually when he lost it leapt when he last used to sure when he lost he was bought of hamas in the south in the nato and other syrian government areas and so i think without the russians of what i think the iranians
6:20 pm
they brought the russians into syria because they couldn't actually stay in their support for the syrian regime probably without that support without that backing probably the syrian regime wouldn't have existed today very interesting always good to get your insight on the situation in syria and thank you very much for joining us on the news great now an interesting opinion piece that's been trending on al-jazeera dot com how one the war. torn a middle east researcher and writer based in the u.s. says while assad has made military gains he is not the president of syria is the president of all to pride syria a very interesting perspective read it on al-jazeera dot com and don't forget you can send your questions and comments for us on this story and others we're covering on the news great to our correspondents our guests as well you can do so on facebook live facebook dot com slash a.j. news great on twitter at a.j. english is our handle don't forget to use the hash tag news great you can also whatsapp us the number is on your screen there shortly plus sign seven for five a

one triple one for nine there it is now time for a look at the day's other news now on al-jazeera here is the clark in london barbara starr in london sorry. probably thank you the post catalan leader kallis pushed them all to is calling for a united political front ahead of the same snap election to continue the push for independence a european arrest warrant has been issued for bush the mountain four of his colleagues who fled to belgium after the clarence a session from spain they face charges of rebellion sedition and misuse of public funds for pursuing the referendum which the man said on friday that he was considering standing in the election from brussels catalans in barcelona meanwhile have criticized the spanish government. to pick someone up on a risk that is not politics politics is talking discussing the wristing someone it seems to me is a little bit like a fascist government that's something that doesn't make any sense in these times in

europe we all need to talk and discuss that's what we live in a democracy. it's very bad because the dictatorship is supposed to be over in this country and now we are in a free democracy in the twenty first century it is sad that this is going on with the president of the catalan government protesters have rallied in london in opposition to the one hundredth anniversary of the balfour declaration the controversial declaration was issued by britain's cabinet in one thousand nine hundred seventeen and marked a turning point in the effort to create the state of israel so in a year ago was at the rally. this week the british government has commemorated the signing of the power for decoration a hundred years ago and asked which said it was proud of parts on the other side of that first day on saturday in london outside the u.s. embassy is another voice which runs counter to that and last of those who are

against the legacy of the south ration earlier i spoke with dr stuff about rootie a promising activist who said that the u.k. was wrong in a crowd of this like i say it's very important because balfour declaration was colonial project. it used the jewish people for their colonial purposes against the palestinian people it was a crime that led to several other crimes including the ethnic cleansing of palestine and it's a crime that is still going down it's not finished the crime is being conducted today in west bank in gaza and resolve them and we want it to be stopped. by the british government is proud of having helping to create the state of israel a little more so that's another series of. hundreds of thousands of palestinians who are all my hope bridging the diaspora of about million he and while there is

japan remain solid and japan and the prime minister are there. on board with regard to north korea and we've got to china a recent poll in japan found nearly half of those asked about the leaders relationship said it was only good for the u.s. . japan is always wary of the united states reaction when talking about trauma i'm a bit afraid of what lies ahead the silence continued to fly towards us but the united states doesn't do anything so suddenly that it probably isn't wavering in who he is but i'm doubtful of whether he's really thinking about the interests of the united states all the rest of the weld hawkish in dealing with north korea has kept the issue of the abduction of japanese citizens by north korea alive monday trouble visit some families of those who have been abducted over eighteen thousand police officers will be on the streets of tokyo during president trumps a visit one of the largest ever security personnel mobilizations and for the very

the end. of this year and the stories trending on our website al jazeera dot com the stories you're looking at at number one not surprisingly is lebanon's prime minister's resignation side every week stepping down less than a year after taking office after his government came to office i cited a radiant meddling in lebanon's politics and the regional politics and it's a story that many of you are commenting on on the news grid today a loss of comments mom was sick and die here on twitter saying this auction only seems to further divide the countries of the middle east into two sides not great for regional stability that may not bring in. our senior political analyst to further unpack this for us a resignation as we say that came as a surprise to
6:32 pm
a lot of people and one of the recurrent questions my one from our viewers is why did he do it in saudi arabia in riyadh and not beirut. well if you take his word for it it's because he felt that his life was threatened and hence staying in lebanon making that kind of announcement would be a threat to his life credible threat credible threat maybe because the other you trust the prime minister of lebanon the former prime minister about you don't some people would say that his big smiles from one ear to the other ear sitting down with the iranian official n.b.a. what yesterday did not bode well for a man in danger but it could also be that he was charming his hosts in order to escape saudi arabia and make this speech because he does feel threatened or maybe he heard some things from their individual or from his partner in the lebanese government system now having said that i think what really tells us more about why
6:33 pm
he's doing it in riyadh is what he said in riyadh because it wasn't just a question of resignation to speak of out of riyadh about hezbollah's threat his own partners in government and cutting the arms of iran in the region that's exactly what the saudis are saying that's what the deputy foreign minister of saudi arabia just tweeted right meaning it's really coordinated in terms of putting lebannon in the context of regional competition one of our viewers here early on on facebook says it's all part of the plot to attack iran to agree that that would that will they go as far as that well look i mean i because i've heard the arguments this afternoon about the proxy wars with. iran you and i have discussed it over the last few months and years the proxy between saudi arabia and iran iran and riyadh fighting it out in lebanon and yemen and syria and iraq and so on and so forth. i think the important thing is the timing right and why the timing
6:34 pm
meaning is on the one hand so you're a bit feeling so defensive because of the iranian expansion of the influence that it is taking on the offensive as best defense. acting in yemen acting in the gulf qatar unsold so forth and now acting in lebanon or on the other hand is iran that has really expanded its influence into iraq and syria wants to cement its victories by making sure that lebannon becomes part and parcel of its influence and that hizbollah that paid a high price in syria would be will accommodated in the future of lebanon speaking of syria lebanon has managed to shield itself from the war in syria yes there are a lot of syrian refugees in lebanon but they haven't been affected as much as some would say by a war in syria is that going to change now with this unstable political situation there's no doubt that the entire region is in
6:35 pm
a sort of cake or some sort it's really explosive. and i think the way things are happening in lebanon going back. as i said since it's not mutually exclusive that both the iranians and the saudis are on the offensive now on various regional issues i think the question of refugees and and i'm not connecting the two it's all right also the question of instability displacement as well as the question of insecurity instability terror the question of war and peace the question of economic stability of the likes of lebanon on the question of regime instability in various little countries in the region i think all of that is on the test at this point at this point in time unfortunately the way things have been done today and the way that the way things have escalated and the way they are taking this kind of a regional dimensional if you will a scale asian means that it's we're up to no good in lebanon and in the region in

general interesting and worrying times no doubt thank you very much marwan bashar at marwan retire on twitter if you want to follow him he's got some very interesting thoughts to tweet as always thank you for joining us on the news great . now we are going to zimbabwe now where a tweet has landed a woman in jail asocial media producer and a ship that is here to tell us why thank you folly a u.s. citizen has been arrested in zimbabwe charged with attempting to overthrow the government after allegedly insulting president robert mugabe on social media now her name is martha o'donovan and she's the project officer of the gumba t.v. it's known for political satire and comedy shows which tackle certain political and social issues in zimbabwe and across the continent now she was taken into custody on friday in a dawn raid at her home in harare that arrest her organization believes was illegal . and you know their cues you know. undermine. the president.
6:37 pm
by posting a tweet and my. news connection. from austin to. now she's accused of a couple of things here posting this tweets under an alias calling president mugabe a selfish and sick man the government is also accusing her of using the gum but network to try and subvert a constitutionally elected government donovan has called these accusations baseless and malicious now this is the first arrest in zimbabwe based on a tweet since mugabe created a ministry of cyber security last month this ministry is meant to protect the public from things like cyber attacks and revenge pornography but civil society groups warn that the new ministry would be used to crackdown on human rights groups in the lead up to next year's elections now last year zimbabwe saw its largest anti

government's protests in a decade which were largely fueled by social media post something that was pretty new for the country pastor evan face treason charges over the movement that he started which used to hash tag this flag other popular hashtags and online movements have sprung up since then as zimbabwe's social media landscape has become more dynamic that's something that martha o'donovan often speaks about. and so it actually made a point that i'm right now and specially at this time that zimbabwe and twitter and social media really could no longer be disregarded if you go online you're complaining about something or if you're calling out a politician on something they have to respond to you and it really did change the game for young people to be able to express on social media and this way now if convicted o'donovan could face more than twenty years behind bars a similar predicament that's faced by others like the activists stand for wads of who was arrested last month for referring to president mugabe as dead man walking these social media rest of certainly rattled the online community there are many
6:39 pm
people are talking about this on twitter as a media posted a copy of her arrest warrant saying that this shows that none of us are safe and since friday donovan supporters have used a hash tag free martha to call for her release especially since the account that she's accused of using garri has been tweeting ever since she was taken into custody so if you're in zimbabwe we'd love to hear your thoughts on this story you can tweet me directly i'm at enter chapelle or just use the hash tag a.j. news grid all right andrew thank you very much for that we're going to speak now some more about the situation in zimbabwe to our next guest on the news grades he is joining us via ken i believe canterbury sorry in the u.k. alex my guys i was in bob when annoying former advisor to zimbabwe's prime minister morgan chang thank you so much for joining us on the news great what do you make of this case against this american woman and what could be the bigger plan here from
6:40 pm
this in baghban government. well first of all it's very deep in us chart it follows a line of taxis of a similar nature that we have seen over the past two years. against opposition activists and opposition members and rivers and attitudes of civil society who are generally accused of insulting or undermining to also tell the president it's an assault on freedom of speech but the bigger plan here is that the zimbabwean government is trying to demonstrate to the people of zimbabwe that there will be striking very hard on social media there's recently created a cyber security ministry which is basically designed to police social media and this is the first case we share they're using bash to demonstrate that they're serious about yeah the fact alex that the person is an american
6:41 pm
