saudi arabia has fired another warning shot at iran accusing it of direct military aggression through who see rebels in yemen crown prince mohammed bin solomon was referring to the missile fired riyadh from yemen on saturday saudi arabia pointing the finger at teheran for supplying the weapon to iran for its part has dismissed the accusation as quote contrary to reality meanwhile what appears to be the saudi orchestrated resignation of lebanon's prime minister has thrown the country into political turmoil as a whole day begins our coverage from beirut. it has been three days since lebanese prime minister sato had announced his shock resignation he made his statement in saudi arabia and hasn't returned home since instead he traveled to abu dhabi a saudi ally in the anti iranian camp for talks on an escalating political crisis back home but the crisis extends beyond lebanon's borders saudi arabia has made clear it wants to curb iranian influence not just here but across the region riyadh

is accusing iran of what it called direct military aggression by providing hutu rebels in yemen with rockets used to target the kingdom saudi officials have also said the very presence of hezbollah in the lebanese government amounts to a declaration of war. saudi arabia through a stretch when the lebanese government and people to finish off his blog it's an invitation to civil war there's a new front saudi israel and the us against iran. iran has proxies across the middle east in iraq it controls paramilitary forces that are stronger than the state in yemen saudi arabia is in a quagmire unable to defeat the iranian allied hutus in syria it has revolutionary guards and hezbollah troops supporting the government iran has now secured a land core door stretching from to her on through iraq and syria all the way to

lebanon where saudi arabia hopes it can change the balance of power. saudi arabia has long criticize hezbollah it is even classified as a terrorist organization but now. stronger language and threatening action in the words of the state minister for gulf affairs there will be those who will force hezbollah to return to their caves in southern lebanon. curbing hezbollah's influence and power won't be easy it is not just an armed group it is a political party with strong popular support but as of late it has extended its influence beyond lebanon's borders. hezbollah's arms it's this is a descent troops to fight alongside syrian president bashar assad's forces have long been issues of concern among some lebanese factions but it has long resisted calls to disarm and to withdraw from syria it's not clear what action saudi arabia will take. riyadh has a number of options to restrain his below but those options will just target has
9:05 pm
been in the shia sect they will target all the lebanese economic pressures very possible but i don't believe saudi arabia can pressure has a lot militarily calls for unity are growing louder but lebanon is a deeply divided country in a deeply divided region the political crisis is only worsening and any solution will have to be part of a regional deal said. beirut. so let's take a closer look at the sources of tension between riyadh and so they saudi arabia and share iran are backing rival science in a range of conflicts across the middle east the two countries have been fighting a proxy war in yemen since. iran back. in control in the capital while saudi forces are fighting to restore ousted president. they too have a long struggle for influence in lebanon last year they arranged and backed hezbollah and to the coalition government leading to
9:06 pm
a cooling of relations with saudi arabia has increasingly taken a leading role in the war. in neighboring syria helping iranian ally president bashar assad in his fight against rebel groups some backed by saudi arabia on top of all this there is iran's growing influence in iraq not least through the powerful shit militias it operates their contribution to saudi arabia sphere but it is increasingly surrounded by states and iranian influence what joined by in block who is a visiting senior fellow at the london school of economics middle east center thanks very much for coming in to al jazeera it does feel like all those sort of proxy groups that we've got used to fighting in the region are unraveling is this a major escalation but it's certainly a verbal escalate escalation from the saudi crown prince to talk about direct military aggression blaming that on iran is of those a very strong words on the other hand from saudi arabia these days we're all
9:07 pm
getting used to how drama this isn't over it's course on the external front not the internal front that we've been looking at in particular but of course the resignation of the lebanese prime minister rafik hariri almost certainly saudi instigation or inspiration is another fascinating element in the in the regional dimension of the story the saudi iranian rivalry is a strategic or it seems to be getting worse it seems to have deteriorated particularly since president trump took office in january of this year people will remember the saudi arabia as a present from first foreign visit he was given a very very warm welcome in riyadh the saudis were delighted that he wasn't president obama who they really disliked largely because of the internationally. organized iranian nuclear deal and that is involvement there and possibly changing the status quo when he did arrive on the scene how much is it now down to three

nations who are all involved by various. to greece in that region to calm things down to try and make sure this doesn't stop building into something will well of course words don't necessarily automatically translate into into war georgia will be quite high level but doesn't always magically become conflict i mean it's hard to see who would actually benefit from a conflict hizbollah in lebanon is very much in the sights of the israelis but the imbalance between those two plays is enormous his bond is important because it's been particularly emboldened by its success in backing president assad in syria and contributed a lot to his survival in syria is probably the most important recent battleground in which the saudis and the iranians have been on on on opposite sides so i think the automatic risk of military action but the who's the rebels who are fighting the
9:09 pm
saudi led coalition did fire a long range ballistic missile that hit riyadh it that's not something that you can just wish your way somebody supplied them with that missile the saudis accuse the iranians it's probably more likely to have come from his buddah but the the the direction is clear that confrontation is getting worse i mean these two countries don't have diplomatic relations either let's not forget that they were severed in one thousand nine hundred twenty sixteen over the the hanging of a shia cleric and in saudi arabia it's quite a dangerous situation but. do people actually want to turn that into come but i wouldn't assume automatically that that is the case and just for people watching saudi arabia at the moment looking inward looking all over from the saudis a country fighting on currently being aggressive on not just home obviously with
9:10 pm
what's going on politically inside the country is the capital blockade that the probably the leading player it and then as you mentioned there's syria there's hezbollah all these different areas and this play was very thin then here i mean what is the thought process really behind all this aggression well i think that i think it's all a by a fundamental rivalry between these two powerful countries which have to be regional leaders now iran is a much bigger country. population terms saudi arabia is undergoing great change the saudis have never shown any appetite for military adventures they've always preferred that other people do that for no it's true with the coalition they're leading against yemen that's a different story but that's very much in their own yard i think that they are encouraged by president trumps really barely closer to towards iran in particular but i think that perhaps i'm speculating here the hope of the others the americans

9:16 pm
most delicate leg of his asia tour it brought him to within forty eight kilometers of the border with north korea following his war of words with its leader kim jong there were fears president trumps presence would provoke some sort of response he described north korea as a worldwide threat that requires worldwide action but his tone was more measured than in the past and he called for pyongyang to come to the negotiating table he said all available tools would be used short of military action but he also stressed america's military capability as we work together to resolve this problem using all available tools short of military action. the united states stands prepared to defend itself and its allies using the full range of our unmatched military capabilities if need be south korean president moon jay in said the time
9:17 pm
was too early to talk to the north but promised a bright future if it gave up its nuclear and missile programs. of the united states has strong sanctions on north korea and i think it will have an effective impact and with china joining the united states it will bring force to the sanctions on north korea with all these international diplomatic policies i think when there are changes being made it will bring north korea back to the negotiating table trump is the first u.s. president in twenty five years to be treated to a state visit with the first since ronald reagan not to visit the demilitarized zone the border with north korea instead he went by helicopter to count home for his the largest u.s. base in south korea he later spoke of the close relationship between the two countries but all that we've built in the decades since our soldiers sacrifice side by side in the struggle for freedom our alliances more important than ever to peace and security on the korean peninsula and across the indoor pacific region.

thousands of pro trump supporters lined the streets of seoul all those who oppose the u.s. president were kept corralled behind police buses south korea's liberal government is pulling out all the stops to make this visit a success they know they can afford to alienate the president and the united states their defense against north korea depends on a good relationship have a joint news conference trump announced that south korea was to buy billions of dollars worth of military equipment from the u.s. which would help offset the trade deficit between the two countries and a five year old free trade agreement will be renegotiated trampin. first lady melania were greeted by children and a korean pop star at the blue house and later what's known as a friendship walk through the gardens with president lula and his wife the day ended with a defiant threat from north korea reaffirming its resolve to strengthen its nuclear

power rhetoric but no action so far so good the trumps first day in south korea to the al-jazeera so. well for more on this let's go to scott snyder in washington he's head of the program on u.s. korea policy at the council on foreign relations thanks very much for joining here joining us here on al-jazeera so a couple more conciliatory tone we're hearing but is this really a change in president chums actually cheered to the whole situation or was this just because he's now surrounded by south koreans who want to hear that will consider it your time well certainly the main thing that the south koreans had been hoping for is that president trump would stay on script. it appears in his first day in seoul that he has done that he delivered i think the most clear support for the broader administration strategy of course of diplomacy toward north korea but i think we've heard from the president himself so far we've always had
9:20 pm
from north korea that one of the reasons it is so pro nuclear weapons is because the americans on the south koreans have had these military exercises across the border close do you think there's a risk of that the president comes to visit will exacerbate north korea rather than actually bring him bring them to the table. we have in the past seen demonstrations by the north koreans in terms of short range missile tests that have greeted presidential visits so far we haven't seen any of that instead we saw a hint at openness for dialogue and i hope that the north koreans take note of that and that in fact it's possible to establish some greater dialogue and really crisis communication channels the challenge of actually negotiating a solution to this impasse is going to be enormous and it's going to take a long time but we need better channels of crisis communication north koreans
9:21 pm
always said they would just really want to be respected at the top table less than as you describe it is there a chance that can happen or do you think that the americans and the south koreans will always push back on them wanting to be that. this is a really complicated question because essentially what north korea is seeking right now is to even the playing field on the nuclear front and i don't think that the united states is ready to exception or three as a nuclear power as john young so desires but is it possible for the u.s. and north korea to have a dialogue and to manage current tensions as long as north korea stops short of directly threatening the united states i think the answer to that question should be yes and of course the president heading off to china what do you think will be top of the agenda or are we still thinking it's going to be appealing and. you know i do expect that president trump is going to push president xi pretty hard on steps
9:22 pm
that china can take in order to pressure north korea present if she is really at the top of his powers following the party congress has consolidated his rule and so one would think that he is in a position to deliver whether or not he wants to do what president trump wants him to do i think remains to be seen and then there's also the challenge of unfair trade and a huge trade deficit the u.s. has with china that president trump all so wants to try to close alongside his effort to convince president xi to cooperate on north korea or if the president spoken about china during his campaign all that put aside now do you think relations with china will be very friendly very warm i think the president xi will be a good host to president trump and we'll see a lot of positive optics but i'm not very optimistic about the longer term

relationship at this time because i think there are so many obstacles especially on the economic fronts that are being generated by china's increasing trend towards a kind of protectionist approach and areas where the u.s. perceives that the economic playing field is simply not level at this time many thanks for your thoughts cos neither they're speaking to us from washington. i saw it carried out an attack on a t.v. station in kabul which killed two people gunmen stormed the building after an explosion capital at least twenty of us were injured the attack is widely being seen as an assault on media freedom in afghanistan. to restore electricity food and water services to the man asylum detention center in papua new guinea has been rejected by its supremes court six hundred refugees are refusing to leave the formal australian run facility despite it being closed last week they say

armed groups have abused access to humanitarian aid. limited access to you let me give you a limited medicine. i mean basically it's. this is what is. excess is used as a people and that's one reason why fifteen hundred eight workers from around the world are in turkey delegates are gathered here from one hundred ninety countries to try and figure out the best ways to tackle the challenges that humanitarian workers face and how best to carry out humanitarian work in parts of the this first week of threats in the face not just of the state but non-state actors from across the globe. besides safety there's the constant risk of being manipulated by the different sides in the conflict it's hard question that you are asking but it is also a question which is more than one hundred fifty years old when the i.c.r.c. was founded this was exactly the debate in the nineteenth century the criticism

that we would create an organization which would probably war instead of abolishing war and i think today we are more aware in the situations that you described that. we can't escape the humanitarian imperative of helping people survive in the most difficult circumstances. with an increasingly polarized world an expanding conflict aid workers say their job of making daily tough decisions keeps getting harder. solid job a delta zero and dalia the former catalan president carlos preached a man has made his first public appearance in brussels since spain issued an arrest warrant for him he joined an event held by a group of catalan mayors who travel to belgium to show their support for him and for other form of members of his cabinet which demand addressed the crowd saying

catalonia was fast becoming and alarmingly in europe. we mustn't forget that catalonia is the only part of the european union where the government democratically elected by the people is not actually allowed to govern and it's the only part of the european union where the president of that government is not actually allowed to be the president. supporters and opponents of secession for catalonia have held rallies in brussels that's where they sacked catalan president and four former ministers are hoping to avoid extradition to spain some are calling for european union help in resolving the crisis as nadine barber reports. well one of the catalonia related events happening here in brussels on tuesday was the arrival of around two hundred pro independence mayors from the region they said that they were here to show their strong support for colors put it among the deposed president of the region and his four former colleagues who were
