the u.s. is urging international action to hold iran accountable to saudi arabia accused her on of direct military aggression over a who see rebel missile strike the saudi crown prince says iran supplied the weapon fired from yemen towards riyadh on saturday to harangue says the accusation is contrary to reality the saudis also face accusations of orchestrating the resignation of lebanon's prime minister so in a honda reports from beirut. it has been three days since lebanese prime minister sato had announced his resignation he made his statement in saudi arabia and hasn't returned home since instead he traveled to a saudi ally in the iranian camp for talks on an escalating political crisis back home but the crisis extends beyond lebanon's borders saudi arabia has made clear it wants to curb iranian influence not just here but across the region riyadh is
12:03 am
accusing iran of what it called direct military aggression by providing hutu rebels in yemen with rockets used to target the kingdom saudi officials have also said the very presence of hezbollah in the lebanese government amounts to a declaration of war. with saudi arabia through its stretch want the lebanese government and people to finish off his blog it's an invitation to civil war there's a new front saudi israel and the us against iran. iran has proxies across the middle east in iraq it controls paramilitary forces that are stronger than the state in yemen saudi arabia is in a quagmire unable to defeat the iranian allied hutus in syria it has revolutionary guards and hezbollah troops supporting the government iran has now secured a land core door stretching from to her on through iraq and syria all the way to
12:04 am
lebanon where saudi arabia hopes it can change the balance of power saudi arabia has long criticised hezbollah it is even classified as a terrorist organization but now it is stronger language and threatening action in the words of the state minister for gulf affairs there will be those who will force hezbollah to return to their caves in southern lebanon. curbing hezbollah's influence and power would be easy it is not just an armed group it is a political party with strong popular support but as of late it has expanded its influence beyond lebanon's borders. hezbollah's arms it's this issue of dissent troops to fight alongside syrian president bashar assad's forces have long been issues of concern among some lebanese factions but it has long resisted calls to disarm and to withdraw from syria it's not clear what action saudi arabia will take . riyadh has a number of options to restrain his below but those options will just target as
12:05 am
below and the shia sect will target all the lebanese economic pressure is very possible but i don't believe saudi arabia can pressure has a lot militarily calls for unity are growing louder but lebanon is a deeply divided country in a deeply divided region the political crisis is only worsening and any solution will have to be part of a regional deal said. well the u.s. state department has been giving a briefing on recent developments in saudi arabia where a number of leading figures have been arrested accused of corruption let's get more on this jordan and washington what have you been hearing. well mari of the state department spokesperson heather nauert says that in response to concerns about what is happening now with the members of the saudi royal family who have been arrested in recent days she says that the u.s. hopes that if indeed there are charges against against these people accusing them
12:06 am
of engaging in corrupt business practices or in other actions that may be destabilizing the saudi government that it is the u.s. is hoping that they would be given due process that the legal system would be allowed to proceed in a fair and equitable manner of course she also noted that the u.s. and saudi arabia have long been allies and that basically the relationship is a strong one but it also is significant though is that when she was questioned about whether the u.s. was told that these arrests over the weekend were going to be taking place heather nauert told reporters at the state department no the u.s. was not informed but she said that the u.s. has been communicating with saudi officials who say that they are simply trying to deal with they consider to be a problem of rampant corruption in their government and that they're using the
12:07 am
legal methods to try to resolve the situation. thanks very much for us in jordan with all the latest from washington d.c. well the u.n. has condemned saudi arabia's blockade of yemen as catastrophic and joined international aid groups in calling on riyadh to lift it saudi arabia announced on monday it would close all as a land and sea ports to stop the flow of arms into yemen but the move is also stopping aid from getting an diplomatic editor james space reports. the blockade of yemen means no humanitarian aid is coming into a country that is in desperate need it also means vital commodities are harder to get the cost of food rocketing the price of fuel going up sixty percent in recent days the u.n. has been expressing its deep concern at a news briefing in geneva the situation is catastrophic in yemen it's the worst food crisis we're looking at in the world today seven million people
12:08 am
on the brink of famine millions of people being kept alive by our humanitarian operation sult this is a lifeline that must be continued every single day comments then echoed in new york by the spokesman for the secretary general but it's clear the u.n. is avoiding direct condemnation of saudi arabia does the u.n. believe that by its actions this blockade that saudi is in breach of international humanitarian law i'm not in a position to issue a legal ruling what we do know is that the blockading of ports and airports and land routes. can have a tremendously negative impact on a situation which is already catastrophic the un's humanitarian chief mark lowe called was very guarded in the u.n. committee hearing refusing to talk about the saudi blockade i've said all i want to
12:09 am
say on access and i've been quite careful in they. have used the end of the meeting and could be seen speaking with saudi arabia's ambassador who is almost certainly coming under a great deal of pressure behind the scenes saudi arabia will be under fresh pressure on wednesday sweden has called for an emergency closed door session of the security council to discuss the crisis human rights group that's been focusing on the medical situation in yemen. security council members need to speak out but this is not a time to put secondary national interests first this is not a time to say oh i wonder what will happen to our arms industry oh i wonder what will happen to the president this might set in terms of investigations of potential war crimes this is a time to step up and i would say that the u.n. has a role in pushing that. right i don't want to call it bravery i want to call it human decency for the people of yemen the stakes could not be greater james zero for the
12:10 am
united nations. let's get more now everything now in the u.s. response particularly to growing tensions between saudi arabia and iran i'm joined from washington by i am assured from the u.s. think tank the cato institute thanks very much for speaking to us and obviously watching developments inside saudi arabia very closely over the past few days we know that president trump has a strong personal relationship with the saudi leadership and he's certainly not been afraid to tweet his support for their recent actions in the country particularly by the crown prince what impact is that likely to have. i think donald trump's response to this has been very interesting i think in any normal administration normal u.s. administration we would have seen the government take a much more measured stance towards this crisis the same as we saw back when the
12:11 am
culture crisis started with the g.c.c. crisis we have seen donald trump make these very intemperate statements on twitter we've then seen other members of his cabinet or other u.s. officials try and walk them back and take more measured approach and i think to the extent that he's impacting affairs in the gulf trump is pouring gasoline on a fire. so what might his support for the first of all what is what is at the heart of his bond then with with saudi arabia would you say that usually the u.s. would take a more measured a more neutral position why is that not happening now. donald trump appears to have formed a strong personal connection with saudi leadership he had that extremely successful trip to riyadh earlier in the year he's had good personal connections with muhammad bin solomon his son in law jared visited saudi arabia just last week and apparently had excellent meetings with mohamed bin solomon and so like a lot of trumps foreign policy this seems to be driven as much by personalities as
12:12 am
it does by policy likes the saudis therefore he is backing their leadership in this crisis what does that mean for u.s. interests in the region. frankly it's worrying saudi arabia seems to be taking a very assertive aggressive approach not just in domestic politics but towards iran and as we have seen in the last several years we've seen saudi actions in yemen extremely destabilizing their actions in syria have not helped that conflict and no they appear to have their sights set on lebanon none of this is good for regional stability and that's bad for u.s. interests in the long run. but does it also perhaps mean there is a greater alignment between u.s. and saudi interests a lot of debate right now that with sort of a victory over i still in the region there could be a new set of u.s. priorities and that could mean a more confrontational approach with iran. i think
12:13 am
certainly the new administration here in washington and new leadership in saudi arabia share fairly common views on iran donald trump has taken a very confrontational approach to iran decertifying nuclear deal a couple of weeks ago he has said that if congress doesn't take further steps on that he will do something about it and so to a certain extent these saudi policies are right in line with what trump has advocated with what nikki haley his u.n. ambassador has advocated but i think a lot of people even inside trump's cabinet are concerned that this could get out of control and it's not a tall clear if saudi arabia decides to challenge iran in lebanon or elsewhere what the end result would be this could end up like yemen a failed war a humanitarian catastrophe that drags the u.s. further into regional conflicts well i'm ashford thank you very much for sharing your thoughts with us and watching on jazeera still to come on this news hour we're

going to be in harare way zimbabwe's president robert mugabe has fired his deputy clearing the way for his wife to succeed him. sexual harassment scandals ministerial slip ups and stalled bright sick talks what's next for persons in acol government and in sport kenya's first female olympic marathon champion gets her punishment for failing a drugs test. now donald trump passed truck a different tone towards north korea during a visit seoul u.s. president is on the second stop of his tour of asia he's met with south korea's president lungi in and said he's still open to negotiations with the north tony but he reports now from seoul. donald trump arrived in south korea on the second and perhaps most delicate leg of his asia tour it brought him to within forty eight
12:15 am
kilometers of the border with north korea following his war of words with its leader kim jong un there were fears president trump's presence would provoke some sort of response he described north korea as a worldwide threat that requires worldwide action but his tone was more measured than in the past and he called for p.r. nyang to come to the negotiating table he said all available tools will be used short of military action but he also stressed america's military capability as we work together to resolve this problem using all available tools short of military action. the united states stands prepared to defend itself and its allies using the full range of our unmatched military capabilities if need be south korean president moon jae in said the time was too early to talk to the north but promised a bright future if it gave up its nuclear and missile programs. of the united
12:16 am
states has strong sanctions on north korea and i think it will have an effective impact and with china joining the united states it will bring force to the sanctions on north korea with all these international diplomatic policies i think when there are changes being made it will bring north korea back to the negotiating table trump is the first u.s. president in twenty five years to be treated to a state visit with the first since ronald reagan not to visit the demilitarized zone the border with north korea instead he went by helicopter to count humphreys the largest u.s. base in south korea he spoke of the close relationship between the two countries but all that we've built in the decades since our soldiers sacrifice side by side in the struggle for freedom our alliances more important than ever to peace and security on the korean peninsula and across the indoor pacific region.
12:17 am
thousands of pro trump supporters lined the streets of seoul all those who oppose the u.s. president were kept corralled behind police buses south korea's liberal government is pulling out all the stops to make this visit a success they know they can afford to alienate president of the united states their defense against north korea depends on a good relationship have a joint news conference trump announced that south korea was to buy billions of dollars worth of military equipment from the u.s. which would help offset the trade deficit between the two countries and a five year old free trade agreement will be renegotiated trampin. first lady were greeted by children and a korean pop star at the blue house and later had what's known as a friendship walk through the gardens with president moon and his wife the day ended with a defiant threat from north korea reaffirming its resolve to strengthen its nuclear power rhetoric but no action so far so good the transfer stay in south korea tony berkeley al-jazeera seoul. well the next stop on trans tour of asia is china
12:18 am
as talks at present she jingping are expected to see trying pressing for a tougher line on north korea but it could be a difficult meeting as adrian brown reports from beijing. when richard nixon became the first u.s. president to visit china forty five years ago chairman mao was in charge the cultural revolution was still on a man now china's president was nineteen years old and working on a farm today she jingping is the dominant force in chinese politics he says he wants china to be center stage in the world not since smiles as a u.s. president had to deal with the chinese leader as powerful as she. overall. trump is getting less attention than present and he doesn't like that because he is sort of he's leading the discussion on climate change and he's participate actively
12:19 am
in the free trade discussion so about for trying he doesn't have anything like that . last conference fortunately she can definitely he definitely does it'll be tensions over north korea and chinese trade practices that will be the dominant themes but china is still expected to confirm several trade deals for which trump will be able to claim credit says one analyst she will play him like a fiddle he will he will be very polite he will be obsequious and he will basically pushed up around make him pay attention to what he thinks he needs to pay attention to and everything will be smiles and handshakes and trouble go away getting nothing from the visit at first glance they appear to very different leaders but they do have some things in common both are populist politicians both take big political risks she doing pain has a china dream from wants to make america great again and curiously they are born
12:20 am
just a day apart although in different years with the exception of gerald ford every visiting u.s. president has gone to the great wall but it's not on trump's itinerary given his love of walls it could have provided a memorable headline adrian brown al-jazeera beijing. patricia kim is an expert on u.s. china relations and east asian security at the council on foreign relations she joins us now from washington thanks very much for speaking to us and so these are two interesting characters what are your expectations for this meeting how would you describe the personal relationship between president trump and president xi. sure marion will thank you for having me i would say that president trump initially began with a very hardline stance on china bashing it for not doing enough in terms of trade and north korea but ever since the two leaders summit at mar a lago president trump has emphasized repeatedly that he has
12:21 am
a very warm and personal relationship with president xi and i think ultimately both leaders understand that they need to have a stable relationship to accomplish their respective goals for the for the united states this is first and foremost securing china's cooperation on north korea and for president xi this is ensuring that there aren't any bumps in the u.s. china relationship that can get in the way of achieving his dream of making china great again as you say we've seen a shift in president language it's gone from tough talk to slattery is he likely to get anything tangible from president xi houses that. right so you know president trump's number one priority when he arrives in beijing tomorrow will be to get president xi to agree to commit to enforcing any existing sanctions on north korea as well as progressively increasing sanctions until north korea comes to the table now there is
12:22 am
a strong debate within china among the political elites on whether china's policy of prioritizing stability on the korean peninsula as opposed to denuclearization is really in china's interests now we don't know exactly where president xi will come down on this debate but that's ultimately what will matter and president trump will need to work on that but how difficult is that going to be because we have seen the americans working very hard in recent months trying to persuade the chinese to do more trying to convince them to apply more pressure on north korea it hasn't worked . right so i don't know if i would say it hasn't worked i think as i mentioned you know there is an increasing debate in china whether the status quo policy is really in china's interests i think you know president trump is going to have to continue to stress that allowing north korea to continue its behavior is alternately going to push the ridge the region in a into
12:23 am
a place that is not in china's interests for instance by pushing south korea and japan to acquire greater military capabilities maybe even to pursue their own nuclear weapons also i think it's going to require ultimately some sort of grand bargain or a deal between the united states and china along with south korea and other regional partners that assures china that if it joins in with the united states on a pressure campaign against north korea if the regime happens to co-ops as an unintended result any restructuring on the korean peninsula will not cut against china's strategic interests patricia came in washington d.c. thank you. well now i still says it carried out an attack on a t.v. station in the afghan capital kabul in which two people were killed gunmen stormed the building off an explosion in the capital at least twenty others were injured the attack is widely being seen as an assault on media freedom in afghanistan. new

information is continuing to emerge on the shooter who killed twenty six people in a church in the u.s. on sunday according to a local t.v. station in texas devon kelly escaped a mental health facility five years ago he'd been sent after beating his wife and stepson kelly had also made death threats to military superiors when in the u.s. air force and tried to smuggle guns on to his ad base despite all this is rob reynolds now reports somehow he was still allowed to buy an austin of guns. a bureaucratic failure by the us air force allowed the texas church gunman to buy an assault rifle and other weapons despite a conviction for domestic violence devon kelly beat and choked his wife in two thousand and twelve while serving in the air force and struck her toddler son so violently he fractured the child's skull kelly was sentenced to a year in military prison and given
12:25 am
a bad conduct discharge the air force should have provided kelly's information to a national criminal database listing those convicted of violent offenses who are prohibited from legally buying guns but for unexplained reasons it failed to do so that blunder ultimately allowed kelly to buy multiple firearms which he used to kill more than two dozen people in the small baptist church in sutherland springs on sunday roseanne so elise survived my with hiding under the benches and i could feel her. while back and forth and i knew i was going to call that boy the air force says it has launched a review of how kelly's case was handled police say the killer was embroiled in a dispute with his strange to second wife's mother who sometimes attended the church but was not present during the rampage two men chased kelly from the church
12:26 am
until he crashed his car and shot himself dead mass killings on this scale inevitably lead to call for stricter gun control laws president donald trump on a visit to south korea dismissed the idea out of hand there would have been no difference three days ago and you might not have had that very brave person who happened to have a gun or a rifle in his truck go out and shoot him and hit him and neutralize him. and i can only say this if you didn't have a gun instead of having twenty six dead you would have had hundreds more dead so that's the way i feel about it in the past eighteen months there have been more than five hundred mass shootings in the united states with nearly seven hundred people killed and thousands injured a record of violence unmatched by any other developed country rob reynolds

12:32 am
how fast things have changed for the independence movement probably independence is going to have a secondary role i mean this doesn't mean that people are going to forget what happened the last month but of the same time in their minds of the politicians are now also the whole society we are starting to think about this process as something that you need more time in other to to make the underpinnings of the new contrie. that new country now under the thumb of central government the independent republic they proclaimed less than two weeks ago has been stamped out the most urgent task now lifting direct rule by madrid restoring catalonia is autonomy before deciding what to do next march will depend on the far left coupe party supporters of independents and previously kingmakers in parliament who may yet decide to boycott all disrupt december's election but here too the tone has changed.
12:33 am
are people aware that this is very difficult right now yes but people are also aware that the way to achieve our sovereignty is with a republic. it does seem that those who support independence of catalonia are beginning to accept that their dream a distant one journal al-jazeera barcelona. to governor elections on the way in the united states could be seen as a crucial indicator of the popularity of president donald trump polls in the swing state of virginia show a close race between the republicans and the incumbent democrats. in new jersey will also get a new governor both parties are looking for momentum ahead of next year's midterm elections and mike hanna joins us now from washington d.c. and like it looks like a close nail biting race in virginia one of the polls showing. well the polls indicate that it is neck and neck particularly in that race for
12:34 am
governor in virginia that between edulis be the republican candidate and northam who's fighting for the democrats now this is a key contests for democrats and republicans trying to get some kind of surge of energy before next year's mid-term elections it's important to note that they're also elections in the state legislature in the course of the stay there the republicans in virginia have a two to one majority but very significantly two years ago more than forty of the seats were uncontested by democrats this year only twelve republicans are not being a forty against in the polls this is a massive upsurge in political participation by the democrats all well aware that the necessity to show that there is some blowback perhaps against a tramp presidency for the republicans there's an insistence to show that the
12:35 am
momentum established in last year's election is maintained. and so mike what are the crucial issues for voters in these states one of the campaign strategies. well it's been very interesting because what one has seen is that both republicans and democrats have gone very much for a grassroots strategy now this is something out of the trump playbook at sol he managed to achieve victory last year the republicans focusing on energizing the support base of organizing from the bottom up rather than from the top down and democrats imitating this as well they are going to the telephones they have been knocking on doors this is very much a surge of grassroots political activism which may manifest itself in more voters going to the polls and certainly what we've heard from party organizers is that there appears to be a far greater interest in these elections than there has been in the past this is
12:36 am
a consequence most maintain of the controversy that surrounds the trans presidency manifesting itself in a political formation of groups not necessarily interested before but who have been galvanized into action by the past year by the trump administration being in power and it's going to be fascinating to see how it turns out in the cheney and the jersey but for now mike hanna thank you. zimbabwe's president robert mugabe has fired his deputy are being disloyal the decision of the leading contenders to become a garbage successor with speculation the president's preparing the way for his wife to take her arm which asser imports from harare. zimbabwe's former vice president in a similar gaggle hasn't spoken or been seen in public since he was sacked on monday but some of his supporters are talking and they are not happy they say president robert mugabe and his wife grace think the country and the rulings on the party is their own personal property you just weren't people and then what you liked is

the hatch sirius seventeen will be followed by a four month mission next year eight months in two thousand and nineteen and a full year in two thousand and twenty. you may think it's a bit strange looking a bunch of people inside a tin can here on earth and running tests on them when there's actually a space station orbiting the planet and has been for decades seemingly much more suitable for these sorts of experiments but there are actually key reasons why this works. it's not that the international space station isn't being used to simulate tests it is but earth based analogs are much safer cheaper and in some ways can better mimic the space travel yes wasn't a lot to design to be in an isolation environment it does i mean here you are isolated but more and more you know crewmembers how about you know a cell phone in their pocket they can call their friends there's a requirement there's there are many thousands of commands and get sent from mission control to the vehicle every day with nasa russia and the european space
