writing that the u.s. respects the prime minister and sees him as a strong partner he went on to warn there is no place in lebanon for foreign forces and the u.s. cautions against any party within or outside lebanon using lebanon as a venue for proxy conflicts an obvious message to saudi arabia but his boss u.s. president donald trump has been more willing in the past to give saudi arabia a green light to do what it wants it remains to be seen if that will apply to lebanon but at the united nations growing alarm after saudi ordered its citizens to leave that country this is a matter of great concern to us and what we want is for peace to be preserved in lebanon. it is essential that no new conflict in the region is going to have devastating consequences a critical time for a country wondering what's next for them and their leader political hane al-jazeera washington let's get more on this with our correspondent there she is joining us

live from the lebanese capital so a day after that speech by the last time that we have foreign policy and weighing and zaina what is the latest on the situation the political situation there. well. still open to question lebanon has been holding contacts with arab diplomats western diplomats the president himself meeting the saudi charge at the fair in lebanon expressing concern about the fate of the prime minister asking about the prime minister's well being telling the saudis charge of the fare that lebanon does not accept the circumstances in which the prime minister resigned. the leaders are not accepting his resignation they want to return to explain his decision really there is a rare sense of unity among lebanese factions this is a deeply divided country but political parties across the spectrum all believe that in one way or the other is under house arrest and his freedom of movement is being

curtailed so this is the situation in lebanon a lot of questions. to return to return to maintain stability in this country and what people there politicians they're making all the statements such as the ones from you know the secretary of state the u.s. secretary of state. a little sis. but we haven't had any official reaction right now because of this uncertainty there's a real feeling that the saudi arabia and one way or another may have miscalculated because the very fact that saddam had resigned yes this was a move against hezbollah because hezbollah was part of saddam how do these cabinet then of saudi arabia's aim was to make sure this cabinet collapses and has any influence in government and cause instability in the country political opponents are playing it very carefully they're not appointing another prime minister because

if they appoint a prime minister who is seen to be close to iran then this would isolate lebanon on the international stage if they appoint a prime minister who is off accepted by the sunni community because in lebanon according to the power sharing balance in this country he must be a sunny so they're avoiding this. for the time being hoping that you can return and the sunni community themselves feel that resenting really what saudi arabia has done many lebanese feel that the way it has been treated is really humiliating to every lebanese and we're also hearing words from hezbollah saying he is our political opponent but he's our prime minister so for the time being the deeply divided nation is united they're putting their political differences aside in the hope that they can maintain stability and security in lebanon thank you very much for that for now that saying a hold over the nation from beirut we're joined now by al-jazeera senior political analyst the shabda what's that a miscalculation do you think on some of these part as well saying what's going on

with saudi arabia why they are taking this gamble well there's nothing. new here in the sense that for the last several years at least three years saudi arabia has been overreaching overplaying its hand it's been over the top there's a lot of overs in whichever way you describe any one of the actions the saudis have taken i mean certainly they overreached in yemen right they certainly overplayed their hand with qatar. so you know the whole saudi policy and that man has been washed ill thought through and so on so forth and apparently lebannon is part of this trend the way harry was handled the way he was summoned to lebanon to riyadh the way he was apparently fed these words he read during that press conference the way he has where about i was not really clear even though we hear about his meetings so all in all the reactions into rational reactions friendship

america and others as well as regional reactions and most importantly the reactions from lebanon across the board including from his own party is that saudi arabia has overplayed his hands it's really. over reached by trying to treat prime minister of lebanon merely as one of its own citizens in a kingdom where loyalty to the king supersedes everything else but of course he isn't just a saudi citizen he's not just a lebanese citizen he's the prime minister of lebanon we've spoken about you know this proxy war between saudi arabia for a very long time now but is this something new here do you think the overreach and this action is unprecedented absolutely i generally i've just tweeted asking for help i need to find a new term for then you bumped up proxy war or conflict between saudi

in power as well as in lebanon they feel that they need to cement these victories that they have and surely they want to make sure that hezbollah has a stronghold in the future of lebanon not only militarily but politically so you're a bit on the opposite side wants to make sure that it has that sort of influence in the region in order to confront the iranian influence increasing influence not only its in its immediate surroundings such as in yemen but others so a number of reasons last but not least is the incoming american president on all trungpa where the saudis and i feel more empowered in their defense to go on the offense against iran because as we all know for the last several weeks months president trump has been inciting against iran against the iranian nuclear deal he made the whole huge speech about it so all in all we do have

this then it's further indication of what we already suspect that donald trump is swung round pretty much behind the russian view of how things should play out in syria but i have to say where is the united states version of this document if this is a joint statement why has it just comes so far from the kremlin something here is a little bit off the sort of pattern of events over the last couple of days suggest that the united states has pulled back at the last minute that they were planning to have a proper sit down meeting trump and putin in vietnam but the united states washington didn't want that to happen it said tillerson said on on thursday that they would only sit down and have a chat with each other. a proper proper bilateral chat if they had something substantive to talk about and agree on what if this isn't some things of stance of to talk about an agreement then what is america for whatever reason seems have got cold feet and we have to wait and see what they're going to say about the crime

also been making gains against isis the question is what happens when you take out the common enemy that is isis and according to president bashar al assad he's going to take back every inch of syrian territory and he said that it does not matter what these so-called terrorist groups are called he is going to go after every single one of them and we got an indication of that after they took the important crossing between iraq and syria. there were clashes and they were they were fighting between not just. the al qaeda linked group and if the problems but there were also reports of skirmishes on other on the other fronts that have opened up on either side of the euphrates river so it is very interesting because they say that the deacon fiction is working there is a mechanism between the two militaries that is working they're avoiding clashing with each other but that's only the troops and of assets that they have in the air there's a lot more that is happening on the ground in syria that seems to be out of the control of both sides and it's sort of

more about this i'm joined by the executive director of a pic itself dr thanks for joining us ellen obviously it seems to have been a fairly successful summit what's been the main takeaway for you well you know i think it has been successful we didn't go into it assuming it was going to happen there's been different views around the table leaders agreed position with those years were still. for free and open trade but we want to ensure that we're getting rid of unfair practices were possible and if the w.t.r. needs attention on that then that's got to be looked at as well but from a couple of the big things we're pretty much all the leaders assigned we want more growth we need it but we've got to pay a lot of attention to where it's falling who's getting the benefits who's not getting been a fits and workable to do about their outside the other big thing was really that they were trying to commerce and how we can make sure that it's not just for the

big players but we want to see a revolution in the way small business can get access to international growth drivers through e-commerce a lot of attention obviously on the u.s. president as there probably is but particularly this time because of donald trump's views on trade he seems to be a protectionist at least that's what people are painting him as so how did his views on trade reconcile with a pick which is very much a multilateral format. on trade that we should pay more attention to the rules of try to get fear trade. and i picked this tradition being free and open trade so we had to bring that together i think that we just have agreed with a stand on that that we all want more trade everybody wants more trade is concerned in some places but what sort of trade deficit and so on and others there's no agreement that actually matters that much so we'll have to see developments on that

that statement from the u.s. and russia say reaffirming what they call their commitment to end the fighting we've heard from the kremlin we haven't heard from the u.s. what do you make of it so bizarre. i mean. wait and see right it doesn't sound like a statement that would be opposed by the united states but it would underline the simple fact that if it's true that they agreed that the geneva once again not a stand on geneva is going to be the place where a political solution is going to be found because there is no military solution. then the united states was going to have to be more committed than it has been over the last year last year after that these pinprick attacks on against syrian targets in the beginning of the year at the top administration did very little for syria while the syrian tragedy continues to unravel and russia continued to dictate the pace of change in the country in favor of the assad regime so much so that

today russia turkey and iran have more or more of a say more of an influence in syria down the united states does that's that's the real. fact of life in syria today now you know i've been what a good quarter of a century a student of international politics in the middle east. i've never seen so much cynicism when it comes to global and regional powers dealing with issues of the middle east the people's and people's lives people's livelihoods is turned upside down with the hundreds of thousands of deaths and destruction and sounds of war and yet the regional powers like iran and to some degree turkey like russia and the united states continue to deal with that with a high degree of cynicism with urgent matters that concern you walk in syria and lebanon and yemen and libya and other places and yet they come out with

a statement like this you know you would hope that they would act on it but it's probably a bit too late for the russians to say there is no military solution in syria after they'd been involved in a war in syria against mainly the moderate opposition in syria that we want the democratic change and become and it is of course their military involvement that has given their side the syrian president the op a hand politically in the country where are we now in terms of finding a political solution are we any closer you know i suppose nearly defeated we have these deescalation zones. in the country what do you think look i mean in the end of the day we are in the in the logic of regional powers and global powers in terms of post eisel course dyce syria. if we are if we remember after the pinprick attacks against certain targets in syria trump the american president said some nasty things about bashar assad of syria basically. dismissing the

possibility that this guy can be the head of state in syria and it would have normal relations with the west on the other hand moscow continues to hold on to us and i think that's going still going to be a sticking point the other idea is what future in terms of all these ideas for constitutional changes new constitution democratic elections and so on so forth and how can you get and see that these things will go you know hand in hand with some sort of stability there the turn of syrians and also i think it acquires the participation of their key iran as well as the as the goodwill of russia and the united states i honestly don't find it today that good will i find words and more words but i don't find real goodwill that will put syria on the track towards prosperity and democracy any time soon. thank you very much for that matter.

iraqi forces have launched an offensive to capture one of the last remaining areas on the ice and control in the country to infantry divisions and sunni tribal forces are carrying out the operation and province it's believed by some fighters a holding ten thousand civilians hostage in the town of ramallah and while khan has the latest from the iraqi capital baghdad. the operation began early on saturday morning as iraqi forces went in to the town of ramadi is described as a town however it's a series of small villages where i saw fighters have been holed up after they fled operations against them in ramadi and fallujah now this is on the border the border crossing with jordan which has been a strategic stranglehold for isolate managed to stop traffic coming in and out of that border crossing so this is quite key although we're not expecting huge amounts of isis fighters to be in the area the fact that they are still there means that they were controlling that territory and this is all about who gets to control the

territory now we're not expecting this to be as large an operation as we've seen perhaps say in mosul or in iraq against eisel in syria what we're expecting is the operation to be concluded fairly swiftly in fact what militia sources are telling us from the ground in amman is that ramana has already been liberated that hasn't been confirmed by the joint operations command that also the joint operations commander told our desire that they're very concerned about civilian casualties and they want to avoid them so they're going to go in and a step by step basis they're going to surround romana first take ramana and then likely to move across the euphrates river and into and do exactly the same as a tactic that we've seen the iraqi security forces before take over areas outside of the areas i still control and then use that as a staging post to go in now like i said we're expecting this operation to take months or weeks it's going to be likely it is going to take days and we will hear
