4:00 pm
the preparation for our first president george washington said if you want peace prepare for the coming war on china at this time. and we went. on that time to this is some of the times the story the story and. i like to tell that i want the viewer in malaysia like al-jazeera english because the news is not sent but you didn't miss any of the news and you can watch it on like. this is al-jazeera. hello i'm come on santa maria this is the news hour live from doha coming up in the
4:01 pm
next sixty minutes a diplomatic dispute the u.s. president hits back at the u.k.'s prime minister after she criticized his retreats of anti muslim videos also in the news a call for action from pope francis as he urges the international community to take decisive measures to resolve the ranger refugee crisis. north korea releases pictures of its latest ballistic missile launch as international calls for more sanctions against pyongyang grow louder. and i'm for a small i'll have all the day's sport including brazilian side gremio beat argentina's lanas to win south america's biggest club football competition in a couple of doors for the first time in twenty two years.
4:02 pm
so let's start with the fallout from donald trump's retreating controversy and britain's prime minister to resign may's insisted she is quote fully focused on tackling extremism she says that a day after she criticized the u.s. president for retreating anti muslim videos from a far right british group trump bags to resume a should focus on terrorism in the u.k. the british parliament has been discussing the role of the home secretary and the rudd says she hopes british condemnation of trump's twitter behavior will be taken seriously. i think it is fair to say that we have been very clear president donald trump was wrong to retreat videos posted by the far russian first we have said so clearly in this house and the prime minister has said so clearly online we will continue to speak freely and frankly when it takes place. the parliament in london the. important moment for two reasons so often accused of
4:03 pm
looking a bit weak in her position as prime minister she has to come out strongly on this one and. it's a very uncomfortable moment to reason she's actually touring the middle east at the moment she's been in iraq saudi arabia today in jordan trying to forge a role for britain in the world in trying to deal with all the very delicate diplomatic issues in the middle east so i think this is. i think donald trump and the relationship with america has been difficult she was criticized for the haste with which she went to washington immediately after his election she was. needed to be invited to the white house she was criticized also for the haste with which she extended visit for the american president here to the united kingdom a visit that would involve the queen a visit that diplomatically would be extremely embarrassing to go ahead
4:04 pm
in the near future and for instance you could only imagine what sort of protests that might be on the streets of london the british government line is. saying this to parliament again today this special cultural military diplomatically it is much more important it is much deeper than the current incumbent of the white house it was before and it will be that afterwards. it's been talked about it's not confirmed it is a state visit it isn't a state visit what's the difference can you just run through that from a. visit the highest accolade a foreign leader. can be given and if you like it it's with the bells and whistles ceremony. carriage down the. visit to.
4:05 pm
something which has been of course. several american presidents in the past. later on in the cases during the second and that's why it was contentious. was offering visit straight away back in january at a time when donald trump but only been inaugurated a few days before of course even during the campaign before his victory he had a lot of people with his proposed. debate in parliament about a lot of criticism from the mayor of london that anger towards donald trump on the world of the attacks in london. which a lot of people and again provoked a reaction from. for the prime minister and yes i think it has to be thought through in the context of again that if britain is to make
4:06 pm
a success of its place in the world it has parted ways with the european union well obviously. international relations will be its ties with the united states and britain. to be strong in theory. today is that the special relationship invitation is still on the table in practice i can't see it happening any time soon phillips thank you for that. quick look at donald trump's twitter tweets this morning nothing about this just talking about little rock in the new york times. a little bit earlier professor of international politics at the university of birmingham in the u.k. and he told us. and it's damaging to the united states.
4:07 pm
what this is done is just highlighted the fact that trop and this i think is the far more important story is now damaging values that are upheld here in britain and in the us i mean he's up damaging the notion of decency and tolerance and respect for office and all cultures indeed he is now effectively an accomplice of hatred and division and his momma phobia so we're not even talking about you know the special relationship whatever that is we're talking about donald trump actually damaging the u.s. position with many countries around the world and prost most importantly trying to set americans against americans the convergence of this unique man with his ego with his narcissism with his lack of information and the use of social media puts us into a very different position and that is donald trump is not just going on twitter as some type of political strategy or tactician when donald trump goes on twitter he goes on as double trump to say what he believes and what he has done in the last
4:08 pm
twenty four hours in a message to forty four million people on twitter and his supporters as i believe in hatred of muslims i believe in basically inciting hatred against them i believe that even if those muslims are americans you have to look upon them with suspicion that is the point that we're out to be blunt if donald trump was at my university he would be fired for what he has done in the last twenty four hours if he was a teacher at a school or my children go alongside muslims and jews and christians he would be fired so why should he have a special position to say what he is saying just because he is inside the white house we're moving on to other news the head of the roman catholic church has called on the international community to take what he calls define the measures to resolve the refugee crisis in bangladesh and me and my thoughts once again he did not use that would range up francis now in bangladesh. more than six hundred
4:09 pm
thousand ranger have fled after a military crackdown began in me and. the pontiff had been criticized for not publicly mentioning the range of crisis during the me and if it's true he also avoided the word in an address in bangladesh's capital instead he spoke of the refugees from a kind state you need. it is imperative that the international community take decisive measures to address this grave crisis we need to work to resolve the political problems that is causing these people to suffer and also to offer immediate material assistance to bangladesh to respond to those who urgently need it. wrapped up his visit to me and now with a mass for young people he told worship is and young going to never be afraid of making a ruckus while encouraging them to ask questions that make people think. the plan to send hundreds of thousands of back to me and mary's facing some hurdles while the bangladesh government agreed on a deal to return the ranger home issues with identification documents are
4:10 pm
presenting some problems with this now from cox as bizarre. fires in his family fled their home in the bangladesh border a month and a half ago. military were taking woman away and raping them we saw them burning home always so was the fire everywhere. following huge international pressure myanmar has agreed to work with bangladesh on a plan aimed at eventually allowing the region just to return to plan entails refugees staying in temporary camps close to their property and destroyed homes their injured have suffered decades of persecution they're often described as the largest stateless people in the world. i'm never i know what our main demand is that they recognize us as romania and then we may go back just a little it's when you take a look at the various identity cards issued to the ranger that you begin to understand how vulnerable they are to further violence and discrimination these
4:11 pm
cards and pieces of paper highlight the kind of problems that the rangers have had for decades in relation to their legal status inside myanmar and they also highlight potential difficulties with respect to their identification if indeed this repatriation plan goes forward this is a citizenship card and it was made available to all ethnic groups including the ranger after independence now in one thousand nine hundred two citizenship was withdrawn for the ranger it was a few years later that they were issued with this the so-called white card now the word ranger has disappeared from it instead there is written main goal in and the religion islam in twenty fifteen they had to hand these over and they were issued with this receipt now there is no mention of any ethnicity nationality or religion
4:12 pm
on this receipt it was a few months later that they were issued with the east with a similar scant amount of information that the vast majority of ranger refused to ever pick these up from the government. and today she's already registered hundreds of thousands of refugees living in the camps. have dual son muhammad with his new id card but the information on it is far from clear. first they gave us a card which said growing your registration card now they gave us a card which has me on my national registration card why the bangladeshi government gave us this card we don't know based on information provided by bangladesh me and maher says it will accept the redeemed only after it verifies the information. and muhammad walked to the border and look at their home which is now occupied by the myanmar military. says he just wants citizenship and security in the country he

his family and hundreds of thousands like them believe they are from. al-jazeera cox's bazaar bangladesh and the u.s. is calling for more sanctions and the complete isolation of north korea after another ballistic missile test united nations security council held an emergency meeting following pyongyang's latest launch with north korea saying the test proves it has the capability to hit the u.s. mainland this from kathy novak and so. thank you all owing the latest in a series of ballistic missile launches north korea says its rocket weaponry system development is complete and it's finally a nuclear state the day after firing what the north says is its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile yet state t.v. showed leader kim jong un overseeing the night time test the u.s. president again called kim little rocket men and added a new unflattering description little rocket man rocket fuel for the american

economy. is a sick puppy for the ninth time this year the united nations security council discussed yet another crisis centered on north korea this test is another confirmation that the north korean threat has changed dramatically in a few months both in scope and scale the threat us shifted from being regional to global. and from the u.s. ambassador a direct plea to china to exert greater economic pressure on its ally and neighbor we need china to do more president tropp called chinese president xi this morning and told him that we have come to the point that china must cut off the oil from north korea that would be a pivotal step in the world's effort to stop this international pariah but no such

pledge from china instead it called again on the u.s. to explore a freeze for freeze scenario in which north korea would slow its missile program if the u.s. and south korea lowered their military posture on the peninsula this position supported by russia in the booklet with what we proposed a solution based along the principle of suspension for suspension which in visions of d.p. r. k. stopping missile tests while at the same time the u.s. and south korea decreasing the scale of their military exercises this in turn will pave the way for the principles of peaceful coexistence and peaceful discussions between washington and pyongyang. but this has been repeatedly and vehemently ruled out by the u.s. another round of joint exercises between the u.s. and south korean military forces are due to start here next week north korea has said the drills are a rehearsal for war at the united nations america's ambassador has said the u.s. doesn't seek war but if it does start north korea's leaders would be in her words

utterly destroyed calving know that al-jazeera will. plenty more heavy this news hour with living conditions already dying syrians are facing a new threat for survival as winter said also european union and african leaders pledged to do more to help thousands of migrants stranded in libya and in sport toronto f.c. secures a big win in major league soccer far with all those details a little later. now medical sources say at least ten people have been killed in fighting in yemen's capital sanaa forces loyal to the former president ali abdullah saleh fought with hutu rebels near the mosque loyalists who accuse the who these of committing a coup as groups you have a loose alliance was the british prime minister has pushed the saudis about

limiting aid into yemen and is calling for the blockade to be completely lifted this is winter is a moment the saudi king salmon and crown prince mohammed bin salman on wednesday her office is the prime minister made clear the flow of commercial supplies on which yemen depends must be resumed if a humanitarian catastrophe is to be averted her office is the prime minister and saudi royals agreed steps needed to be taken to address it. with us now protection and advocacy adviser at the norwegian refugee council she is in and we thank you for your time suzy have you noticed any difference in the last few days with the levels of that access to that people are getting out of. kemal i was the only recently allowed back into sun after the blockade on aid workers i was left outside the country for fifteen days and on return i have noticed dramatic queues on the the airport there were at least sixty cars lined up for fuel in sana
4:18 pm
. where hearing from our colleagues that they're less able to access food that quantities are going down and prices are going up so where is he going to mediate impact on a desperate need for commercial supplies what is left i know that's a very broad question but i'm just wondering of the supplies which weren't already there enough for you know well how much longer really. where there's a very small amount of food and fuel trickling in through arden and mccullough ports in yemen itself but these aren't enough to sustain the population yemenis three point three million liters of fuel a day in order to power the generators that run the hospitals transport the food. and keep the country running so while there are small amounts coming in and there are small amounts left the simply not enough and we will see seven million people slide into famine. when you hear as i just mentioned the british prime minister putting some pressure on the saudis do you does it give you any hope or the fact that this is even going on for as long as there has. i mean i can't leave you with
4:19 pm
a very well too much hope but yes. well we really welcome steps that are being taken in the u.k. the u.s. and around the world but there are not enough we're seeing duplicity from these governments who are selling weapons to the saudi they're part of the saudi led coalition they're selling weapons to saudi arabia and then they're trying to solve the crisis at the same time yemen's now been in war for almost one thousand days and there are twenty seven million people suffering as a result so it's very hard to be hopeful but we're trying to be so it's really good to get your thoughts someone who is there on the ground and seeing what's happening so thank you so much for joining us. syria's opposition is meeting the un mediator stephanie muster in geneva in the eighth round of u.n. sponsored talks to end the civil war discussions are happening as the rebels trying to topple syria's president bashar assad face up to being significantly weakened by
4:20 pm
a nearly seven years of syrian government fighting syrian government negotiators held talks with de mistura on wednesday let's go to james where is diplomatic editor is covering things from geneva force james what sort of phase are these talks and of stephanie mr a sort of in the middle east got people coming to him from either side how would you describe the the the scope of these talks at the moment while he's trying to create some momentum in this talks process and he's moving pretty quickly in this around he's had for the first time on the second day of the two sides being here in geneva both of them in the building behind me at the same time that hasn't happened since the special envoy lakhdar brahimi some years ago what's called proximity talks the two sides in adjacent rooms the special envoy stefan de mistura shuttling between the two now they're not
4:21 pm
really talking about any of the really hard issues what they're talking about now is a statement of principles and they came up with one of those early on in the year when there was a different opposition delegation they at the time refused to accept his declaration of principles saying that was all laid out already in u.n. security council resolutions and in the geneva communiqué back here twenty twelve this opposition delegation easing gauging on that statement of principles and showing that we have a different grouping of the opposition now negotiating in geneva today even get to discussing anything to do with humanitarian issues there james i've seen some new sort of warnings from the united nations. no one of the things that happened some time ago in this process is humanitarian issues were moved out of the negotiations because every time they came here they started certainly the opposition looking at the humanitarian situation and saying before we will talk
4:22 pm
about this we need to get this siege ended well that was taken out and they set up a task force for humanitarian issues issues under mr diem a story as office and his special advisor on this young nagle and he has been speaking to reporters as they had a meeting here in geneva two of that task force and as you say it's still a very grim situation because of the activity or in part because of the activity concerning the defeat of i saw in russia in the last month they've actually had more people displaced in syria four hundred forty thousand people that at any time in the last eighteen months really highlighting the humanitarian disaster that is syria you are only a few minutes ago hearing about yemen clearly the u.n. trying to cope with all of these ongoing humanitarian situations and it's worth telling you twenty four hours time the u.n. is going to be laying out his humanitarian priorities for the next year with all of the different crises around the world that it has to cope with all right thank you
4:23 pm
for that update james pace that the syria talks in geneva and on top of everything james talks about their winter is approaching and syria and many in the north of the country are worrying about how they'll even survive there is a lack of fuel and people living in the siege at area say they have already used most of the trees around them for firewood and some are been reports now from gaziantep on the turkish syrian border. it's getting cold and syria and it's the time of the year to scavenge for things to burn they need it more in winter because in addition to cooking the family will need to stay warm even tells you that we came from home city because of the government we didn't go to it i send my boy to collect things to burn. to face another winter without any food or diesel . diesel is expensive and in short supply because the northern countryside of homs has been under siege for years. is that. the reason behind the high
4:24 pm
prices is a blockade we live under even then the diesel we get from the regime areas is not suitable for cars. people are forced to look for alternatives. you had to become a tree. he fills all kinds of fees in his own and nearby villages. yes this year he says he has got sixty tons of trees to be burnt this firewood. the cost to the environment she was a small price to pay for survival. prices make us cut the trees down it used to cost less than two cents a kilo now it's over twenty cents. but keep it alternatives to diesel means trees in these villages are fast disappearing. there aren't enough trees left we have been besieged for the last five years when the firewood ends will have just our clothes and god help. some residents are
4:25 pm
trying to find alternatives to cutting trees. growing them to earn a meager living. back in this environment whatever they can get their hands on with and. i can't go to school i used to like winter but there was no money to buy firewood or diesel. this year. just one of many areas in syria where tens of thousands of people are struggling to survive this will be their seventh winter since the two thousand and seven uprising and many say that the outside world does nothing to ease their suffering. leaders in libya have agreed to the emergency repatriation of refugees and migrants facing abuse in detention camps scandal was a big topic at a summit of african union leaders in ivory coast by the french president emanuel
4:26 pm
follows the outcry over a video apparently showing african migrants being sold as slaves in libya. from the summit in. the end of this summit we are expecting a joint statement by europe and african leaders that will announce the creation of an anti slavery task force and i want. this task force will be used to save and protect refugees as they travel to tree roots in africa and in particular in libya would also be used to speed up the tree return. to their countries of origin and help identify possible asylum seekers there is no doubt that the issue of slavery and migration absolutely dominated the agenda here at the summit in abidjan but there is a lot of concern amongst those who say that perhaps the approach that leaders are taking is not the right one that they are favoring quick fixes over
4:27 pm
a long term solution and more needs to be done to really address the root causes of why people. leaving home in the first place. just going to check in with the british prime minister terrorism oh here is another man jordan being asked questions about this tweeting controversy with donald trump when i feel that should be a response i get it and i've given it to president rants tweets. do we have peter here from the guardian yes i thank you very much peter walker from the guardian newspaper. separately to these tweets in general do you think the u.s. president is a supporter and enabler of far right groups. i think that we must all take seriously the threat that far right groups pose and pose in terms of the terrorist threat that is posed by the groups and the necessity of dealing with extremist material which is far right as well i've commented in the past on issues in the
4:28 pm
united states on this matter in the united kingdom we take the far right very seriously and that's why we ensure that we deal with these threats in this extremism wherever it comes in whatever its source now can i ask is this somebody here from the jordan times i feel. yes i think if you were in jordan we should just thank you for this one last question by the way i want you. now given to the new national and the cost me theory and stability and in hosting large numbers of refugees from syria iraq yemen before that palestine do you think that is true that has received on the receiving. from the international community the u.k. the e.u. sawfish or on this work that's something. well as i was speaking about in my speech i think the support we had given and i'm i'm proud of the support that you know specifically has given to. helping to resume they're trying to deflect clearly from the issue of tweeting and outright though she did say just before we came to i've
4:29 pm
made my position clear on those tweets as for the relationship this is a long term special relationship and ensuring our relationship and she said i am very clear that retreating version first was the wrong thing to do to resume in the jordanian capital amman richard angle and in the studio with me now we saw some very cold conditions coming for syria looks like europe's got a bit of that coming as well here has a nice place to be cats are isn't it this time it's always lovely beautiful going to temperatures in the mid twenty's and it's blue skies a stark contrast to many parts of europe we have really cold they're thinking they have wet weather taking down certainly across parts of spain it has been very wet of last twenty four hours that shot comes from monica another one from this sinkhole opening up there response to some really heavy rain so as we look at the situation that was the front which went through the south pushing into central parts of europe the flow coming down from the north indicating cold air is still
4:30 pm
pushing in around and this frontal system is active and ahead of it cold air and as a result we're going to see some significant snow fall developing now we've also had some pretty hefty rainfall totals being reported over parts of italy as the front went through and on into montenegro to we've also seen some very. heavy rain here so as we look at the forecast we're likely to see that frontal system continuing to push through so we've got this cold air across many parts of europe as well and the combination of that front and the cold air is going to result in some significant snowfall you see it pushing up across parts of poland through into lithuania russian federation and on into russia itself moscow will see some patchy snow meanwhile out towards the west the cold air taking all looking very unsettled some snow right down across central parts of spain richard thank you for that now thousands of passengers stranded at bally's international airport have started to fly out after a change in wind direction blew the volcanic ash from mt away the volcano has been
4:31 pm
increasingly active this past week and scientists say the threat of a major eruption hasn't ended but one hundred thousand people living in the danger zone have been told to move to emergency centers more on this from step vasant she is near now on bali. i'm here in one of the largest evacuation shelters near mt this is basically the same but still near enough to do for people to come here and spend the night as you can see there's a around a few hundred people here but only half of all the people in the danger zone have actually registered at these shelters which means that thousands of people are still actually in the danger zone risking their lives it has been a very big challenge for the government to persuade people to calm down because this situation has been going on for two months already back then two months ago i spoke with the family here of a man who actually survived the one nine hundred sixty three eruption she told me
4:32 pm
back then that people in her family had died and five hundred people in the whole village which was completely destroyed by the eruption at that time guy. here is her son in law and he actually still goes back and forth to the village which is very near to the crater. and he told me there is what he called fire rain coming from that right now. it's a very dangerous situation when i went back to the village in the morning i could see ash spewing out. my mother told me that that fire rang out to fragments from the crane and assign a bigger option what could happen but it has been quite difficult for the government to persuade people to come down and to explain to everyone that it is very dangerous and very deadly. it's a very unpredictable and although the warning system is in place all the equipment
4:33 pm
has been in place it's very difficult to persuade people to spend their life like this for days for weeks and even months in a row. police in the philippines have used water cannon to disperse thousands of anti-government protesters in manila demonstrators attempted to break through a police line of president. official residence the protests happened on the anniversary of the birth of the country's national hero on the response. government leaders in the united arab emirates and a former prime minister of egypt are arguing over his travel plans i think he lives in exile in the u.a.e. says he's banned from leaving but the u.a.e. says he's actually free to return home to campaign in next year's presidential election as the full story. the former prime minister of egypt ahmed schiff feat has been in self-imposed exile in the u.s. for five years now he's running for president in next year's election it's his second run but he says his hosts are preventing him from leaving. for sure
4:34 pm
anybody i reject any intervention in egypt is offended by preventing me from participating in a constitutional right and the holy mission to serve my country i call on the leaders to order the lifting govan you know strictures on my ability to travel. the u.a.e. says sure feet is free to go but some analysts doubt that citing the amorality staunch support of egyptian president abdel fatah el-sisi they are in favor of sisi staying in power and not interested in seeing any potential challengers in egypt in regime is also not interested in seeing potential challengers in next year's election should feet narrowly lost to former president mohamed morsi and egypt's first democratic election in two thousand and twelve shortly after his defeat should seek was charged with corruption stemming from his time as minister of civil aviation he was tried in absentia initially found guilty but later acquitted but is
4:35 pm
risky for should think to return is technically or he's legally free to return to egypt but sisi could manipulate the executive branch to file trumped up charges of corruption or a handful of criminal charges and then put him in pretrial detention which could last for years following a series of attacks in the sinai peninsula and a faltering economy critics say president sisi is in a weakened position as he aims for reelection sure feet is hoping to take advantage and many have died. by also promised my photo egyptian citizen but i will not give up on my duty to serve you regardless of the hardships that i might face if she feet returns home the question remains. really gyptian voters see the former air force commander turned prime minister and two time presidential candidate as capable of implementing real change natasha going to aim al-jazeera. so the world's

major oil producers are set to extend a deal to a couple of production until the end of twenty eighteen opec the organization of petroleum exporting countries is holding talks in vienna on ways to boost oil prices this deal due to expire in march reduces output by nearly two million barrels a day since then oil prices have risen more than ten dollars a barrel paul brennan reports now from the summit in vienna. the indications are that the negotiations between the opec members the opec nations and the non opec parties to these these talks this conference have broadly agreed that there will be a nine month extension to the production cuts which were introduced earlier this year now that there was pressure from russia for example about the extent about the amount of time that those cuts should be imposed russia can live with a lower oil price than some of the middle eastern countries for example and russia
4:37 pm
of course is concerned about the resurgence of the united states industry if the price stays tight but it seems that russia has been able to fall into line with its middle east and opec partners and as a result we're not expecting a huge surprise out of this meeting here today now of course with the g.c.c. blockade of qatar at the moment it makes the pre meeting consultations extremely difficult boil and energy ministers simply cannot meet openly because diplomatic ties have been cut off and it's difficult to send messages for example via intermediaries such as kuwait and have the same degree of efficiency of consultations as you would have had in previous years. he has received an invitation to attend next month's gulf cooperation council summit in kuwait they had been done about whether the g.c.c. meeting would go ahead but coates confirmed it would. send that

invitation he has been acting as a mediator after four gulf countries were arab nations cup ties and imposed a blockade on qatar. a surgeon refugees heading to greece in the past three months straining emergency facilities camps built to house just a few thousand people are now coping with three times that number the conditions are so dire in fact that some refugees are hurting themselves in the hope of being removed from the camp this is on the island of let's pass john holl is there for us . in a busy cafe outside the main refugee camp on lesbos island. to tell stories of self harm and abuse on your way out of. the had been absent i know of some people who cut themselves so that doctors can see that and let them go. people have been here for more than a year that tired and psychologically and well they will hurt themselves in any way
4:39 pm
just so they can leave this island inside the camp more than six thousand people share facilities designed for just a third of that number in conditions that appear to be in breach of their human rights many have severe medical problems a man with little bolts in his knees. a husband whose wife is about to give birth. says this gentleman has had two recent hospital admissions in with chest pain it sounds like he has significant coronary artery disease. but there is no easy ticket out of this place or silent the asylum process could take more. and therefore greek government policy now to stem the tide of refugees into europe so we've heard stories about people getting themselves making themselves sick have you heard these stories can you confirm that so it's true they do these things
4:40 pm
they're quite common all the time we hear it those sorts of injuries and that they have various problems for their health but it's something we've become used to and i've been here for years at this camp and for all the years i've been here this has been going on. the words there of the camps chief doctor and surprised he says at the lengths people are prepared to go to because of the conditions here to that that senior members of the european commission have visited this camp and nothing changed even the greek health minister has visited this camp and nothing changed the medical charity doctors without borders concentrates on mental health and sexual violence inside the camp it is horrendous and it isn't acceptable so for me the question will be. what is pushing people to take this measures this extreme measures. and what do you think that is the policy it is that you probably since today they're pushing people to this to complete and utter despair
