hello there i'm dealing with some of this is the news hour live from london coming up. protesters face off with israeli troops in occupied palestine as uyghur builds over the u.s. decision to recognize to roost as israel's capital. turkey's president becomes the first head of state to visit greece in decades but historic disputes still looming large and wildfires in california force hundreds of thousands of people to flee their home. i'm tatiana franchise in doha with all the day's sports including christan ivan alto has won the twenty seven taina. for more on that story later in the program. hello there a very warm welcome to the news hour more than one hundred palestinians have been injured in violent protests across the occupied territories after the u.s. president donald trump formally recognized jerusalem as israel's capital on
12:02 am
wednesday. demonstrators in several palestinian territories have clashed with israeli troops in ramallah in the occupied west bank for i wasn't as he did the call from palestinian leaders to mobilize for three days of rage but the abdel-hamid has more now from ramallah. anger disappointment and a sense of betrayal. among palestinians now still they remain defiant saying that regardless they do consider jerusalem the capital of a future palestinian state now this march is a show of unity usually you would see the many flags of the palestinian factions. only the palestinian flag is raised. for jerusalem that's the only thing we can do this time to clear a sions a slap for us here to wake up and realize the peace process was just an illusion it's the biggest insult to arabs even before palestinians saudi kuwait emirates
12:03 am
jordan all of them then to us here in palestine we defend it but we can't do without support but if those were peaceful protests there were also clashes across the occupied by this bank usually a distil called fiction point that's when palestinian youth come face to face with the israeli army now the military had announced that it has deployed several extra battalion to the occupied west bank because it was preparing for the eventuality of unrest now friday is another day of rage and more of these kind of violent scenes i expected while a general strike is also in place schools and shops businesses and schools have reports from occupied east jerusalem. the day after the us president recognized jerusalem as israel's capital palestinian
12:04 am
residents of its occupied eastern half protested outside the old city's damascus gate the unfurling of the palestinian flag prompted the first of several interventions by israeli security forces it's less than five months since people here took to the streets in their tens of thousands to protest against the placing of israeli metal detectors at the entrances to the al aqsa mosque compound one activist says these protests could swell around friday prayers to see into the wee jerusalem residents we will stand up against this decision every way we can exactly as we stood up against the closure of today there's a general strike and protests tomorrow with a big wave. in a short distance from the mosque a skate inside the old city it's clear that most of the businesses here are observing a general strike that's been called in protest of donald trump's decision. it's a pretty big sacrifice for them it's a sign of how deeply this is being felt. bakeries are among the businesses exempt from the strike i had bush i was born here and what palestinians views their

capital he says trump has jeopardized its future status homework and we can address jerusalem as a sacred place for three religions he can't just give them something that is just for them there was islam judaism and christianity all here this is a city of peace. donald trump did speak of the need to preserve the rights of all three faiths in this holy city and for sizing that he wasn't taking a position on any final status issues including contested borders but his decision to recognize what he called the reality of its status as israel's capital is also emphasized another reality for palestinians life and occupation with the peace process stalled for two decades and now thrown into ever greater jeopardy sorry for said al-jazeera occupied east jerusalem well our white house correspondent kelly how has the deputy assistant to the u.s. president hi there kimberly see you had a chance to talk directly to the white house what's the president's reaction to what he's seeing after all. right ali that's one of many questions i asked the
12:06 am
deputy assistant to the president raj shah try to get some clarity and also an understanding of what the president is seeing as he's watching these events unfold and what his take me is on it listen to what he had to say. so so help us understand with the president's announcement many have argued that this. decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel contradicts international law un resolutions with regard to jerusalem specifically. with the president's decision conforms with american law since one thousand nine hundred ninety five us law said that the president must declare jerusalem the capital of israel and there have been successive congresses that have continued to reaffirm that law president took action which just affirmed oh well congress in the will of the american people has stated for decades and look the policy makes sense we've been you know for now
12:07 am
several decades going to israel and negotiating and we've been pretending we don't know where the israeli capital is it's in jerusalem it's where the supreme court is where the parliament is where the prime minister resides and it's where the capital is so a recognition of reality we think makes the most sense and i try to get a finer point on this because when the president mentioned jerusalem he didn't say and recognize it as an undivided city doesn't mean that in a peace process that sponsored by the united states doesn't mean then that jerusalem could be on the negotiating table as part of a peace process look border sovereignty these are the types of issues are going to be part of final status negotiations were all the parties are going to have a role and have to negotiate a final settlement so that's the decision yesterday has nothing to do with that and we're going to allow the parties to work out the details so was the language very specific that in terms of the selection of the president using the phrasing that he
12:08 am
did of course it was in this is this was about a recognition of reality and not about you know putting our finger on the scale on the peace process we are an honest broker and we want the first word of being an honest broker is being honest and recognizing reality that israel's capital is risky. but many are arguing that just the opposite is being inferred from this that the u.s. is not an honest broker that it's in a sense it has taken a side look the peace negotiations that the u.s. has been involved in now for several months the president is aware of all the details but they're not public they've been confidential and the president is optimistic about the possibilities for peace precisely because they've been kept confidential so i wouldn't assume anything about what happened yesterday and all the context surrounding it were optimistic about the possibility for peace and the president's pursuing it when the president met with fifty islamic leaders months ago there was a report that was developed does the president recognized this decision could put
12:09 am
those fifty leaders that he met with in a very difficult position with their own populations we think that the united states under this president developed a really good relationship with those countries and those leaders and it goes beyond the israeli palestinian dispute it goes toward fighting isis and terrorism throughout the region to go toward it goes toward combating iran's influence throughout the region so our relationships with countries like turkey and saudi arabia and others in the region expands beyond the israeli palestinian dispute and look we are we are partners for peace we want to work with both parties and the parties in the region toward a lasting peace peaceful solution but we don't think yesterday decision was a deterrent to that what about the relationship with the king of jordan for example i mean a key u.s. ally particularly in the fight against eisel there was cautioning by the jordanians . for the president not to do this and now that he has the reaction has been that
12:10 am
there's a feeling that they've been deeply disrespected is their concern about maybe some other foreign policy goals being jeopardized as a result we don't think so we think that the president's action was clear and again reflected american law and we've seen for several decades you know the opposite we thought for decades that not recognizing jerusalem as the capital would lead to peace it has a right the results speak for themselves we're trying a different approach and that is being an honest broker being honest on the front end of that and trying to recognize reality which is what we think all the parties need to do to move forward is the concern that the president's decision though may have strengthened iran position in the region and perhaps some of the extremist groups that he's been trying to fight we don't think so at all we think that the coalition against iran and against their influence throughout the region in many countries is strong i think that many of those countries are frankly more self
12:11 am
interested in combating iran and its influence in the united states is going to work with them in that process we know that the vice president is headed to the region later this month what message is he going to send in some of those bilateral meetings that he's going to be holding well he's going to send the message that the united states is pursuing a peace agreement that we are partners in peace and that the united states and the president cares as much about the future of palestinian children as to cares about the future of israeli children we want a peaceful so a settlement that is in the best interest of israelis the palestinians of jordanians of saudi arabians of every country in the region peace is the goal that we all want we know the president is an avid watcher of television news has he been watching the international reaction and what is his take on what he's been saying well i think that the president has been happy with the reaction has. good that obviously there's going to be some disagreement but when you recognize reality and
12:12 am
you speak honestly to friends and are and are. straightforward with you know the the reality on the ground in israel you know we had better prospects for success and that was raj shah the deputy assistant to the president speaking exclusively to al-jazeera and just to follow up on a couple of points you made there of course the vice president mike pence will be traveling to the region we expect that he will have bilateral meetings to try and convey the top administration's message not only with the israeli prime minister but also the palestinian leader mahmoud abbas can really help get their life in the way has kimberly thank you so gershon baskin is founder and co-chair of the israel palestine center for research and information and he joins me live via skype from just i'm sighing jewess them a very warm welcome to the program good to have you with us what's your view on drugs statement yesterday and the international reaction to it. i think it's
12:13 am
important to say that it was unnecessary and problem very problematic for israelis and palestinians in terms of moving peace forward that being said the speech to change anything on the ground to jerusalem this morning the same as it was yesterday or. their decision to recognize them as the capital of israel is the president's advisor said it should have reality it is israel's capital and the permanent status a truism needs to be resolved in negotiations between the israelis and the palestinians so i understand why the palestinians in the arab world the muslim world are upset and why this is perceived as a violation of international law but in reality in real terms if the violence the eruption of anger is contained and there aren't casualties we will overcome this period to a time when. your americans perhaps get a real peace deal on the table or
12:14 am
a leadership change that israel and palestine that will enable us to get into genuine negotiations actual no isn't this part of the problem though because you say wake up in israel this morning and nothing to say but wake up in parts of the occupied territory and the mindset of those already beleaguered palestinians they feel that life only gets worse and worse and that can not be a good step on this path to pace's it so being called so short it does take something. i think that of course the occupation didn't change also that's not something that can change and needs to change israel cannot be the democratic nation state of the jewish people and to continue this occupation of the palestinian people forever and i think this is recognized by the international community i'm convinced that the people in the trumpet ministration recognize this as well and put a very high. importance on reaching an agreement from speech last night as much as i don't support
12:15 am
a presidential campaign speech last night was filled with mentions of the need to negotiate and to get to peace between israel and palestine and jerusalem is the core issue in the peace process and in the resolution even according to the official palestinian position west jerusalem will be the capital of the state of israel in east jerusalem will be the capital palestine this is what we're working for and this is something that we need to advance we need to recognize that the occupation exists it has to end the palestinian people need to be free from the israeli occupation israel needs to be free from its occupation so in my understanding from what you're saying. yesterday as saying that they are willing not just say force the palestinians to negotiate but also to force the israelis to give up on their occupation is that what we're saying well i'm not convinced that the trumpet ministration is going to put pressure on anyone who the israelis will pick up a stick process on israel to negotiate on the point of giving up that cell keep
12:16 am
pace and how do we have this after pools how does it move things forward i think that we've been living in this kind of delusion for a very long time for several decades that the united states is going to be that honest impartial broker but we haven't seen that the united states has not been impartial it is biased toward israel and i think it's it's wrong for us to continue to expect american pressure on you zero i think that we will have to come to terms of israelis and palestinians. and understand that we have to do it no one is going to deliver palestine on the silver platter there no one is going to deliver israel to continue to be a democratic nation state of the jewish people without negotiating be under the occupation it's one thing is really in the palestinian people realize this that we will get to genuine negotiations and do it gershon baskin joining me there from jerusalem to go sometime to well plenty more ahead on this al-jazeera news hour including two years after russia entered the war in syria moscow declares its

yeah horrifying julie and i'm getting worse we're actually in a neighborhood as you hear one of the fire trucks passing behind this year that's been affected by the flames already i want to give you a look at that reduced to just rubble and i'm sure you can see the cars completely gutted by the flames and the whole me is for all intents and purposes gone nothing to solve each year things are getting worse i hate to say but they are the winds starting to pick up again it's pushing the flames and it's threatening more neighborhoods threatening to do what it's already done here and so that's a big concern for a lot of people watching and wondering where these flames may go next day how are people coping aware where are they moving on to when they're having to leave their homes. jay i'm not sure if you can still hear me there so i'll try again but i'm wondering

where is that the people are moving on to when they're being forced to leave their homes and how are people coping i think we've lost our correspondent there jay gray's ashame we'll try to get him back and see if we get any more detail on the situation in ventura and california on those ongoing fires which continue to spread the u.s. senator al franken has announced his resignation after repeated accusations of sexual harassment the democratic senator from the state of minnesota has lost the support of many of his party colleagues as a series of allegations from women have a march now franken who was a well known comedian before entering politics denied many of the allegations in his resignation speech to the senate but he also used it to take a parting shot at president trying. i have all people am aware that there is some irony in the fact that i am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the oval

12:21 am
or not it came up the idea of the u.s. and north korea sitting down in direct talks about north korea's nuclear weapons program essentially won't happen and here's why nart says that as far as washington is concerned north korea is not serious about ending its efforts to further develop its nuclear weapons program that by having all of these repeated missile to house and tests of nuclear warheads pyongyang seems to be much more committed to developing a robust military capability rather than trying to dismantle it and so she said and that she said that this is the view of the u.s. as allies that unless and until north korea commits to taking apart its nuclear weapons program there really is no point in having face to face discussions now of course that does beg the question given that even though the tensions have been ramping up between north korea and the international community the secretary of

marking a five year peak and greece's territorial water violations number sixteen hundred this year a ten year high that's an uncomfortable parallel with the recent quadrupling of refugee arrivals across the water from turkey causing camps on greek islands to overflow but greece's refusal to extradite eight military officers seeking asylum here is a major personal irritant for turkey accuses them of involvement in last year's failed coup two of the officers are thought to have been the ones intended assassins but that coup has also offered greece and turkey a chance to develop a special relationship. ever since the turkey is looking for allies in the region because of the unfriendly stance of western countries they did not immediately condemn the case but waited until it had resolved itself grace was the only country the mediately condemn the case and thus gain the trust of the president and. turkey has been increasingly isolated from the worst since july twenty sixth greece's

occupation is regarded by the world as illegal the international community also rejected a law passed in one nine hundred eighty by israel's knesset or parliament which declared jerusalem to be israel's eternal and indivisible capital palestinians see east jerusalem as the capital of their future state it's also important to note that jerusalem holds huge religious significance not just for muslims and jews but for christians as well but the palestinian president mahmoud abbas says he's rallying international opposition to president trump's decision calling it quote an unacceptable crime there are also been protests in gaza against the decision from where byrne is smith now reports. this is a scene being repeated across the palestinian territories. we are like a palestinian people we will not accept this world stayed to fight and fight and fight to get your is all i am capital of palestine. but beyond protesting palestinian leaders are now trying to come up with
