welcome to the news great seeking a new partner for peace. calls on europe to play a bigger role in haiti's peace efforts a day after the resounding rejection at the u.n. of president trunk's recognition of jerusalem as israel's capital. no longer accept any peace plan put forward by the americans but can the u.s. be easy beside. also on the brakes let's talk the deposed leader of. discussions with the prime minister. when regional elections the polls were supposed to help solve. that case instead instability is set to continue to boss and. the g.c.c. crisis and the fight for influence. is on a six nation tour of west. new markets to diversify its country's economy amid the

ongoing neighbors but. also been shoring up its long held ties in the region we'll explore what each side stands to gain. and if the confession many of us have waited to hear. for years apple has finally admitted slowing down over i phones on purpose the tech giants explained why but it's not enough for those now planning lawsuits i mean to schapelle with all the online outrage and request. the with the news great live on air and streaming online through you to facebook live and at al-jazeera dot com thank you for joining us conason president mahmoud abbas is urging france and europe to play a bigger role in peace efforts he insists no longer accept any u.s. input after the trumpet ministration recognize jerusalem as israel's capital abbas is in paris where his tanks french president emanuel michel for voting with one hundred twenty seven other countries at the u.n.
6:03 pm
general assembly to denounce donald trump's decision many of washington's western and arab allies were among those who voted in favor while nine countries sided with america including israel guatemala and a handful of pacific island nations. well because. thank you france and thank you for the vote of yesterday at the general assembly it shows very clearly that you mr president that france is the country of freedom and democracy it has also shown that the whole of europe supports international law and justice that is very much sought after in the middle east i have reasserted to president macron that after the decision of president trump to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel and the wish to transfer its embassy the united states is no longer a credible mediator in the peace process we will not accept any plan on the part of the us because of the parties unfeeling and because of this violation of international law sharply. i told president abbas that i did not approve of the
6:04 pm
decision taken by the us president with regards to jerusalem and i reassert my support to launch a new policy to have a sustainable policy which is vital relations between israel and palestine it can only exist through a policy that we can help to support on this point i wish to be very clear there is no alternative to the two state solution and no two state solution without an agreement between the two parties on jerusalem. live not to natasha but in paris natasha mahmoud abbas wants france and europe to play a bigger role in the israeli palestinian peace efforts but for france this is a very delicate diplomatic game isn't it. it is a very delicate diplomatic game indeed because you have france there's been a very staunch critic of the united states his decision to recognize jerusalem as the israeli capital but of course the french president has good relations with
6:05 pm
israel and with the united states and he doesn't want to see that change him at all mccaw is very cautious he doesn't want to be seen as somebody who is taking sides in fact in his press conference with a bit earlier he talked about how sensitive this issue was he was asked why france isn't recognizing a palin's palestinian state right now maybe this should be the time he said it would be very unwise to do that in the current circumstances in any case france's position is that it supports a two state solution that it has to be directly negotiated by the israelis and the palestinians in a two state solution means recognizing a palestinian state and an israeli state and what about all michael is doing is he's really trying to mediate in this crisis by using france's position as a country that has historically good relationships good a good understanding with all the players in the region and the united states to really try and what he says he really wants to do is trying to revive talks he is
6:06 pm
not putting forward a new plan he's not putting forward an alternative to the united states he says he just wants to try and bring all the sides together and that is the role that he sees for france natasha butler in paris thank you very much for that natasha now as the palestinian president is in paris have been more clashes in palestinian territories between protesters and israeli security forces at least two people have been killed in gaza near the border with israel ways really forces used live ammunition to disperse demonstrators who gathered after friday prayers let's go live to gaza and our malcolm web who's been covering the demonstrations there for us just bring us up to speed with what's been happening i know it's been a very tense day there. that's right and we're just a few hundred meters from gaza city is just over there about one hundred meters in this direction is the border with israel the fences along there and if we zoom you might still just about be able to see the crowd
6:07 pm
a small crowd of dozens of protesters who are still here they've been trying to get as close to the fence as they can all day trying to plan palestinian flags and throw stones in the israeli soldiers be retaliating with some gunfire and volleys volleys of tear gas we breathe a lot of tear gas today but every time that the crown's been dispersed they've gathered somewhere else further up and down the fence we've heard from the ministry of health that two people are being killed in gaza today and one in the west bank and also that dozens have been injured have been ambulances coming and going here all day long taking injured people away to the hospitals but it's gone on much longer than then apparently has the last two fridays this is the third friday in the word of the third day of rage as palestinian political leaders have called it ever since trump announced on the sixth of december that the u.s. would recognize to resell them as the capital of israel so what's been the reaction then in gaza and markham to the u.n. general assembly vote yesterday that denounce trumps decision our political leaders
6:08 pm
on the same page as mahmoud abbas when they say you know europe needs to play a bigger role now in the peace epics. well the political leaders of all the different factions said that they welcomed the vote so that was it was universal this included that view seems to be shared by factions we attended a rally earlier with a few hundred supporters of the islamic jihad faction their leaders speaking to supporters said that it was a moral victory but that any substantive any real progress has to be made on the ground any real victory would have to be achieved by direct action by palestinians might not i mean this kind of protesting that we've seen here today where these protests have been clashing with israeli soldiers malcolm webb in gaza thank you very much for bringing us the latest situation on the ground in gaza now as we've mentioned the u.s. found itself isolated at the u.n.
6:09 pm
general assembly on thursday as many of its on lies condemned to president terms recognition of jerusalem as israel's capital let's get a recap on the un vote tally one hundred twenty eight countries voted in favor of the non-binding resolution calling on the u.s. to drop its recognition of jerusalem as israel's capital nine voted against thirty five up stayed and twenty one countries didn't show up at all and israeli prime minister benjamin that's now picked up on that in his response to the result. israel completely rejects is preposterous was a drusilla's our capital always was always will be but i do appreciate the fact that a growing number of countries refused to participate in this theater of the absurd so i appreciate that and especially i want to again express our thanks to president trump and of those who do only for their store difference of israel and there's goal difference of the truth. well let's speak some more about this not to was
6:10 pm
afraid man who is a professor of law and global development at the university of reading in the u.k. she joins us on the news great via skype thank you very much for speaking to us i know you've just returned from the u.n. and you've observed the workings there the dynamics between all these countries only nine countries voted with the u.s. among them honduras micronesia nauru do you think trump's threat to cut funding to countries that voted in favor of the resolution had an effect but i think what we have to look at isn't so much which countries voted with the u.s. but which countries didn't participate which countries abstained because we can see that there's only one hundred twenty eight yeses which sounds a lot but for these emergency sessions that a cold about israel and have been colton's nine hundred ninety seven that's quite a low vote tally in fact it might be to do to the u.s. pressure it might be too many other factors but i think that we have to reverse the way we look at it and think about why it was so many countries did not vote in
6:11 pm
favor of the reson why why do you think some countries didn't even bother to show up when you have some small island states who simply don't have representation in the u.n. so when in an emergency session is cold they don't have the money and resources to turn up but we see that there are very many countries from africa and from eastern europe that didn't turn up and it's likely that they think they don't to be better not to show up in the road and be recorded as having chosen one side or the out of what is the dynamic of the relationship between the u.s. and some of these small countries that voted against the resolution just how dependent are they on america because some of the biggest recipients of u.s. aid most of them muslim a lot of countries defied president trumps right to support the motion. well so many of these small island states they don't have a particular view one way or the other on israel or palestine where's the muslim countries do have a particular view and therefore well what will advance their ideology in that political viewpoint over their relationship with the us now if we look at the
6:12 pm
marshall islands narrow in some and they were actually halted the us until not very long ago and therefore they that dependent isn't just economically but there's also a great dependence on the u.s. leadership and for political support and we see something similar with the latin american countries which is why we have so many of them abstain not be in the room or even vote in favor with the u.s. this more countries are dependent you say it is ironic though that the u.s. you know is threatening to cut aid to some of these countries and it's the u.s. is also pulled out of the paris climate accord and the small island pacific states have been the most affected by climate change how do you explain this dichotomy. unfortunately what we see in terms of development between sort of the larger developed countries and those that are more dependent on them for aid is that often single issues can become very very important and they and the smaller countries can
6:13 pm
be coerced or encouraged to vote alone signed an ally who may not have all of their sort of best interests at heart particularly as you say around climate it isn't only the us that does this we see these tactics from china from russia even at times from from western european states but the way that trent went about this over the last week has been very very different anything we've ever seen from the united states previously a question here rosa from one of our viewers on facebook. what can the international community what can the u.n. do now do more if the u.s. doesn't rescind its declaration which are not likely to do i think we heard president abbas in paris say today that the europeans should take on a bigger role in the mideast peace negotiations do you think that this can actually work and the u.s. being easily sidelined the bigger question is do we want the u.s. to be sidelined the western european states and we should we should acknowledge that there was a split in the european union between the western and eastern european states on
6:14 pm
this vote for the western european states have made it very clear that their position is now much of all moving away from trump and towards palestine now that might be because of the threat of palestinian terror it might be because of anti semitism it might be because every jet and donald trump or it might simply be that they realize that the time has come for viable peace and viable peace means a two state solution with a viable palestine but whether israel will be willing to accept western europe as a partner to peace in the way that it sets the united states it's very unclear that rosa friedman very interesting to talk to you thank you so much for joining us there from reading rosa friedman it's a rector of the global development division at the university of reading thank you so much for your time. let's bring in our social media producer to ship out so much conversation online about this story since yesterday in fact right and so many people were following the vote as the debate was taking place and as the tallies were being counted in fact hundred the hundreds of thousands of people following
6:15 pm
this story around the world then went online to post their reactions that's as the vote was taking place you can see how much it just lights up right after the the numbers start to come in many of them took to twitter especially to express outrage at how a particular country voted or didn't vote or didn't even show up to vote half of the social media reaction that we saw out of the united states but in second place was in india now many are using this image which we showed you a moment ago of that u.n. vote tally to share some very divided opinions you can see india there voted in favor of the resolution and subramanian swamy is an indian politician who says his government made a huge mistake by not voting with the united states and israel so certainly a big conversation there related to this story you have others like the cia director former cia director john brennan who say that every nation all nations have a sovereign rights who opposed the u.s. position on jerusalem he says it shows that trump expects blind loyalty and
6:16 pm
subservience from everyone qualities he says are usually found in narcissistic vengeful autocrats so we received a lot of questions yesterday many questions and comments on twitter as people were following the vote thousands more on facebook so thank you for those honey here honey for other told us that in his opinion this boat shows how people power power of the people is still alive since u.s. threats didn't really resonate so keep sharing your thoughts with us we asked one viewer beheading in gaza to tell us what the nonbinding resolution means to him. i think the vote of the u.n. yesterday eliminates the effects of drumstick liberation. for wise of the divil stations all over the world. provide political support for the third intifada called in to follow us now do you think the vote has been useful in any way we would love to hear your thoughts you can tweet us directly
6:17 pm
using the hash tag news grid or my handle is. andrew thank you very much for that and there's plenty more on this story on al-jazeera dot com of course our web site if you have a chance to read this very interesting piece by how many dabashi was a professor at columbia university his top ten reasons he says to celebrate the u.n. vote on journalists and the vote he says expose that the palestinian cause is a towering global concern not limited to arab and muslim countries an interesting piece read it on al-jazeera dot com moving on and you've lost and catalonia separatist movement is stronger than ever that's the combative message from the ousted leader qantas puja mond to spain's prime minister mariano rajoy after elections that look to have return pro independence parties to power the holy hoped the elections would end efforts in catalonia to break away from spain. spoke from brussels weighs in south imposed exile. the last of the screen
6:18 pm
you know that the spanish state has been defeated roy and his allies have lost and have got a slap in the face from the citizens of catalonia today has sunk the three parties that have won are not in any way behind the political party to pay pay with these results in hand the situation needs to be rectified to be fixed we want you to rectify all those people you have hurt let's look at them being. there what is clear from yesterday's results is that nobody is able to talk in the name of catalonia unless they take into account the whole of catalonia what is clear is that catalonia is not monist its clueless and we must all cultivate this diversity as a virtue and as a richness these elections show that it's plural and we must respect that there's a clear fracture in the society from the radicalization it will take time to mend and this must be the first obligation of all the political actors the necessary reconciliation must come from
6:19 pm
a legal manner respecting the rights of the majority and the minorities and it is now up to the political parties of catalonia to offer the solutions that the catalonian people deserve. let's bring in caller panel now into the news group he joins us live from boston to cause. any speech in brussels was certainly combative but he also offered to talk he asked the prime minister to talk outside of spain what's been the response from the government. well the spanish prime minister has said that he won't meet carlos pushed him on because carlos proved him on simply put isn't the head of the capitol and government anymore it was it was mr officer who deposed carlos pushed him on and the rest of the kaplan government in the wake of the october the first secession referendum so those talks won't happen now if calas pushed him on decides that he's going to try to come back to spain to carry out some kind of talks with the spanish government then there is no arrest warrant out for him and for members of this political cabinet of fled with him to
6:20 pm
belgium and if they set foot back inside the country they run the risk of being arrested well that is the same fate of other politicians who were also candidates in those days election and that really throws up the problem yes on the one hand missed that are wholly says let's have some dialogue but not with mr pollution mond mr rajoy says let's have a dialogue but within the framework of the law that would seem to rule out anything that the procession the. parties are likely to request which is some kind of legalized route to secession some legal referendum and so far the spanish central government has ruled that out the reality card is that none of these two camps today seem strong enough to impose dare stand so what happens now who's going to be given the right to form a government. well i think we all know what the rules of democracy are and it's the party or the coalition of parties that win the elections that
6:21 pm
manage to get a majority that run the government now on the one hand yes a pro unionist party the citizens party came out asked the biggest biggest single policy party in the parliament but we knew from the get go that this election wasn't about individual parties but who could build a coalition and very simply the citizens party does not have sufficient numbers to produce ninnis parties do not have sufficient numbers in the new capital on parliament to put together any kind of coalition the only possibility either to run either a minority government or a majority coalition government lies with the process session parties and that before the twenty third of january mr hori has called parliament has to call the candidates for them to be sworn in at that point there will be horse trading over the coalition but there are also will like the big question who of these politicians who are have either been arrested or under threat of arrest on charges
6:22 pm
of rebellion will actually be able to appear here at the capital on pollen to take this seats there are legal questions that are also mixed in with the political complexities of this of this situation falling so no end in sight just yet for this political crisis in spain thank you very much for that cop and whole life for a sense boss unknown and an interesting opinion piece on our website on spain spiritual crisis and the effect it's having on other independents movements in europe and around the world jason so and of dot with college says cracking down on independence movements is a bad idea because it always leads to political and economic instability and even violence an interesting piece on al-jazeera dot com. now the world news south sudan's warring sides have agreed to let their guns fall silent from sunday to allow deliveries of food medicine and other supplies to desperate civilians the agreement was signed off in ethiopia between delegates representing

much for that apple is say seeing a wave of class action lawsuits after admitting that he didn't live at least slows down the performance of outdated i thought ones andrew is back to explain huge controversy about this and that is certainly the case fully there's owners of the apple i phone who have long suspected that their devices slowdown right around the time that a new model is released now until this week this was mostly a conspiracy theory that many owners would speculate about before running off and getting the new i phone right while some fuel was added to that theory this week after sam size shared some performance test results of his i phone this week ended up going viral it shows how his i phone six processing speed jumps back to factory settings after he replace the battery he says this is proof that apple intentionally slows down old devices so i phones use lithium ion batteries and they decay over time as it happens they retain less and less of their original charging capacity and at some point they're no longer able to handle some of the newer

processor intensive applications and games so apple was asked about this in the company released a statement saying that its goal is to deliver the best experience for customers which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices last year apple released a feature to manage some of the peak demands that are made on batteries as they age over time so you have two sides of the on line debate really you have people i phone owners apple lovers who buy that explanation they say it's to improve battery performance not to force your prompt you to upgrade your device this user says conspiracy is always more appealing than engineering well sam the original guy who posted the performance stated he responded to him saying that apple needs to notify i phone owners when their batteries are being degraded no i phone owner he says knew that a twenty dollars third party battery replacement could be a solution to their problem so many die. hard apple fans are feeling this way one

technology editor here says that if he knew about this he would have just stuck with his one of his old phones and replace the battery he says this so-called harmless policy has earned apple a couple thousand of his dollars at least and as we all know apple's made a lot of money from people regularly replacing working phones with newer models in fact they've sold more than one point two billion i phones that's b. billion since it was first introduced in two thousand and seven releasing eighteen different models the latest version the i phone ten sells for a whopping nine hundred ninety nine dollars now to put that into a global perspective that's more money than most people make in a year and dozens of low income countries like malawi burundi liberia and north korea so they made a lot of money apple is starting to face blowback this week with this admission one prominent u.s. republican party former presidential candidate mike huckabee here says that this mission and this power this practice probably break some consumer protection laws

and he was protected predicting rather a class action lawsuit from all i phone owners well he was right the day after apple statement so this is thursday there were five customers who filed a federal lawsuit in chicago against the tech giant for whether they call deceptive immoral and unethical practices that violate consumer protection laws so we'll certainly follow that case we also want to hear from you you can share your views using the hash tag. and to thank you very much i want to pick this up now with john beggs who is the u.s. east coast editor of tech technology news website tech crunch she joins us from new york via skype thank you very much for being with us so what's your take on this was sis a necessary technical function or any legal marketing ploy. no of course of the technical function i mean. there's nothing marketing about this this is some state ensures that my phone is not going to spike or fail early because i have an older battery the the question here is whether or not whether or not that apple should

have been doing this and that and i'm absolutely certain that every other manufacturer does something very similar to the us. the concern right now is what's the communication what should they be saying to consumers when their phones are just getting older essentially and nobody wants to nobody wants to hear that they have to buy a new phone obviously right to get a casket is this feature an actual moneymaker for apple is there any way to tell no it's not a money maker i mean the money makers already there they they make new phones and people buy them so that's not the something concern here what this does is it basically slows it down to a degree that encourages that ensures that the battery in the phone doesn't shut off. i think it lets people use their phone a little bit longer than they would even expect to be expected to what about consumer protection laws do you think there's a case against savile now it's not i mean if. if if b.m.w. said that you're not supposed to drive on the tires for for five years and you
6:43 pm
should change your tires or rotate them out. and you kept your tires for seven years and your tire popped what's the what's the claim there is a change or ties in that you can if you don't change your car to you. in some cases you can really you can swap out a battery for as low as twenty dollars in some places people don't seem to know that. they didn't figure it out this is a this is a tempest in a teapot right now but you know a company sales can be affected by tris how much do you think how much trust consumers have in their product and will this admission by by apple affect that trusty thing. no i don't think so i mean in terms of samsung samsung phones would literally explode in your pocket and i it's not like samsung is losing that many many sales this is a again this is a it's not a marketing ploy its base going to generic trick a put in to make sure that everybody had the same situation you don't think it's a big deal but i want to ask you about the ways i mean one point two billion i

phone sold since two thousand and seven and many wealthy household households in america have iran five apple devices that's a lot of either waste you know when older devices that thrown out isn't it. absolutely but there's also a lot of plastic waste polluting the ocean i think i mean it's has it has no bearing on this on this conversation you waste is not the same as is debian reuse these phones are going to resell these phones and in fact apple has a better resale value in any market than any other ok john biggs very good to talk to you thank you for sharing your views with us john beggs is the east coast editor of tech crunch joining us a via skype from new york thank you for your time. moving on and the emir of qatar is looking to tap further into the west african market as his country continues to live under a blockade that's been going on for most of this year i mean been hammered out funny has met leaders in senegal booking

rule that is further you want. we didn't but. it came through a country called synagogue which organizers learned you know one of the first quarter or the first islamic summit comes and then prevent of still i don't. believe. quarter close before coming to me i think the former president of synagogue need to do the thing work with rather close to the immediate family of qatar somehow managed a visit in order the game engine is it has a market is also seen as a bid to counter some of the winds in west africa saudi arabia though has a strong standing in this region its engagement in west africa dates back to the one nine hundred seventy s. just how talent bring is it going to be for qatar what inroads can they hope to
6:47 pm
make in light of saudi arabia standing in this region. never forget that west african nations and function countries even in one hundred seventy two we did them prisoner of sin they got a lucrative us single organize a peace mission for our east they are doing diplomatic work in order to mend fences between saudi arabia and qatar they are highly qualified in order to please the lord because since i was invited when tom visited so but also said i was invited when saudi arabia decided to send troops to yemen so they got almost decided to send troops but because of the international pressure public opinion. was obliged to cancel that for the head i think that synagogue can play a diplomatic road in the fact that also qatar did the same for synagogues because you know one of the main opponent of the current president of syria gun market is staying as a political refugee in qatar and the qataris have played
6:48 pm
a role i think that with this visit on the one hand the qataris they want to fix their diplomatic ties with saudi arabia using the long relationship between senegal and saudi arabia second to use the cut of that political prisoner they have buckham their you know order to have leverage on the senegalese people what are your what are the ways that make any kind of an independent money what is a country like santa guy getting out of this what we know what is carbon received. they receive financial aid they always receive financial aid from qatar let's take the kids of working a fast to one of those countries the immutability gave them. to. health center to fight cancer so this is tough to follow and qatar has been giving money to senegal i think it's important other facilities infrastructure there even
6:49 pm

6:55 pm
a long exchange with the kuwaiti media organized the reason behind the walkout was revealed the presence of qatar based news channels including al-jazeera. the saudis and in marti's are part of a blockade of qatar that's been in force for more than six months they accuse qatar of sponsoring terrorism accusations vinci denies just a few weeks ago it looked like at this year's edition of the gulf cup wouldn't go ahead a tool but hey in saudi arabia and emirates were threatening to boycott the banned neural event i'm in the regions of worth diplomatic crisis in years the gulf crisis saw the competition moved from qatar to kuwait. the host nation where themselves are banned from international football by fifa until just two weeks ago they're hoping this story meant will help ease the tension between qatar and its neighbors

it's not about for talked about something to give them football it's something we're going to run sport. for core to typical initial team is that they are attached to it i can describe how. how how how how like how they felt. going to last two weeks and also the last two years this tournament is very close to the kuwaitis hearts they've won the title ten times the first was back in one thousand nine hundred seventy eight when it began you know quite where they're sort of the environment for every reader is very visibly so this is history there are over they will be really easy. very very very far of this history. this is the first official training session for the kuwaiti national team in two years and despite the press conference a drama earlier on the home team are determined that nothing will spoil their party

but there will be facing a tough challenge as they're getting ready to face the only team that is called the fight for the twenty eighteen world cup. a sixty thousand capacity crowd is expected that the opening ceremony on friday including the fee for president giani in fun tino after two years of football they thought the home fans are hoping for some great football action and a fierce contest on the pitch rather than off it. the political dispute has very much lived in the online sphere for the past six months and so that incident from yesterday has been no different a lot of the reaction is naturally in arabic but in english too going to start with this one from nadia she's from kuwait she's particularly unhappy. the displacing that kuwait is hosting the gulf cup tournament in order to bring the countries of the region together the behavior of the saudis and the u.a.e. according to her is extremely childish but there is of course the other side of the
