8:01 pm
thousands rally in support of iran's government as the foreign minister mocks the u.s. for its emergency meeting at the united nations. angry scenes and backlash as palestinians protest against the greek orthodox patriarch accusing him of selling church land to israelis. and challenging viewpoints week outside indonesia's international museum of modern not. the president has rejected accusations that he is mentally unfit for office describing himself in a tweet as a stable genius responding to criticism in a newly published book that caused doubt over his ability to do his job he posted actually throughout my life my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being like really small i went from very successful business men to top t.v.
8:02 pm
star to president of the united states i think that would qualify as not smart but genius and a very stable genius at that. well here is the man himself yes president donald trump and we're now at camp david way that meeting it will rationalize prepared for the coming year we finished very strong one of the things we are discussing and discussing very powerfully is drugs pouring into this country and how to stop it because it's at a point over the last number of years it's never been like this we've never had a problem with drugs like we do whether it's opioid or drugs in the traditional sense it's never been like it is and we are going to do everything we can it's a very difficult situation difficult for many countries not so difficult for some believe it or not they take it very seriously and they're very harsh and those are
8:03 pm
the ones that have much less difficulty but we're going to be working on that very very hard this year and i think we're going to make a big dent into the drug problem and with that i think of what it i'll do is a scare majority leader mitch mcconnell say a few words that i had paul ryan and will perhaps you have some questions for some of the folks we have a great group of talent and i will tell you the meetings again were really perhaps transformative in certain ways of doing things that we have things planned for next year or one of things mitch said and he said it very well was it's going to be tough to beat the year we just left because what we had last year was something very special especially to cap it off with the tremendous tax cuts and tax reform and don't forget and war and don't forget the fact that the individual mandate such a horrible thing for so many people was terminated it's very very tough but i'd
8:04 pm
like to ask mitch come up say a few words placed. thank you right so we've been listening to u.s. president donald trump talking about some of his priorities for the year mentioning the need to tackle drug smuggling that he has been meeting with congressional leaders camp david over the weekend as they try to really crystallized their priorities and decide on their agenda for the twenty eight team but of course all of this is being overshadowed by the revelations in michael wolf's new book inside the trump white house and more on that our correspondent john hendren following all these developments from washington d.c. and so despite attempts by donald trump to perhaps take the focus off wolf's publication which ended up being published a few days. it seems that it's quite remarkable that trump was actually in
8:05 pm
a position where he was having to defend his mental stability and whether or not he should be in the office of the presidency. that's right miriam all the republicans in that room with the president at camp david right now what they'd like to be talking about is the things they've accomplished they just had a major tax reform bill and they are moving forward with immigration that's something they expect and hope to accomplish a complete overhaul of immigration including in addition to that border wall that trump has always been talking about but he stepped on his own messages morning parent lee waking up and then sending out a barrage of tweets defending his intellect and his mental acuity and that's in response to a number of things that came out in that book you had steve bannon quote quoted as saying the president has lost his stuff rupert murdoch the media mogul called him an idiot and then you've got aides describing him as a semi literate dope one of the words that someone used in that book so these are
8:06 pm
the things that have gotten under the president's skin and he just apparently couldn't help himself this morning sending out a barrage of responses to those comments he's also claiming that this is part of a campaign by democrats and media people to paint him as some people painted ronald reagan as a guy who was out of touch and was losing it while in office and this is his attempt to defend himself while meanwhile the rest of those republicans they want to be talking about immigration in the future accomplishments that they hope to achieve in the coming year as you say john this is what the republicans wish to focus on and we're just seeing paul ryan speaking that at camp david off to meeting with president donald trump bought the what this book by michael wolff has revealed troubling questions about the president's state of mind this must be weighing heavily on the minds of the people that he's been meeting with what point
8:07 pm
does that perhaps bring about a shift in how congress chooses to deal with donald trump. it's clearly gotten under his skin and he's clearly worried that it's undermining his effectiveness that's that must be why he addressed that this morning and members of congress of course are cognizant of the fact that the president really only has the support of about a third of the american people that's the republican base and there comes a point in a presidency where if he loses enough support and his credibility is damaged enough that congress will not necessarily cooperate with him because they'll be looking out for their own skin in the upcoming twenty eighteen elections and in order to in order to look good in those elections what many of those republicans the president is with right now they want to pass an immigration reform bill they've agreed to fund this wall the president has been talking about but they haven't they haven't agreed to make mexico pay for it that comes with an eighteen billion dollars bill
8:08 pm
over the next ten years and they also want to come up with some kind of agreement for these these children of undocumented immigrants their so-called dreamers who president obama protected under an act in his administration trump rescinded that act and now they're in this sort of neverland where they don't know whether they're going to be protected or not congress wants to take care of that that's what they want to do but president trump keeps stepping on his in an administration message in this book has apparently really rattled him thanks very much john hendren in washington d.c. . now thousands more pro-government demonstrators have been rallying in iran in a show of strength after more than a week of anti-government protests government supporters marched in the streets waving a write in flags and chanting slogans against the u.s.
8:09 pm
israel and person iran's government has blamed western nations for fermenting the on rest which has seen twenty two people killed and more than a thousand arrested in the last ten days iran has accused the u.s. of abusing its powers a member of the u.n. security council offer it called an emergency meeting on the protests well iran and russia both accuse washington of exploiting the protests to undermine the iran nuclear deal same bus driver he is into iran with the latest. iran's leaders are no doubt celebrating what they'll consider another victory against the united states on the diplomatic front shortly after the u.n. security council met to discuss a government protests in iran the foreign minister zarif tweeted out that he was glad that the majority of security council member countries rebuffed america's attempt to misuse its power to bring what is essentially a domestic iranian affair on to the international stage he also called it another foreign policy blunder for the trump white house we also heard from iran's presidency president hassan rouhani as chief of staff in
8:10 pm
a statement said that the move by the united states at security council was both desperate and further isolated the united states itself on the international stage now as far as the protest themselves are concerned anti-government protests are all but over while pro-government rallies still continue as the government continues to cement its footprint on the streets later on on sunday lawmakers will meet to hold a close session of parliament where they will discuss the root causes of the recent unrest many lawmakers see it as foreign as that led to these protests and blame foreign countries for trying to create instability in iran and other lawmakers sympathize with protesters saying that they have valid concerns and valid grievances since many iranians suffer a great deal of economic hardship now whether they agree with the demonstrators or not lawmakers in iran do realize one thing that if they don't address economic concerns that these protests could happen again. try to take you back to camp david
8:11 pm
and u.s. president donald trump i did a quick interview with him a long time ago having to do with an article but i don't know this man i guess sloppy steve brought him into the white house quite a bit and it was one of those things that's why sloppy steve is now looking for a job ok who else is there just. as i was reading the meetings now between south korea and north korea is exactly. how. i was going to ask are you comfortable that this whole room. just about feeling fixed or you were. arrested as you know the first hint of south korea he thanks me very much for my tough stance and you know for twenty five years they haven't been using a tough stance they've been giving everything when you look at what bill clinton did and you see in the famous clip where bill clinton wants to give him everything and where i said years ago with. russert meet the press many years ago. we talked i don't think anything's changed you have to have
8:12 pm
a certain attitude and you have to be prepared to do certain things and i'm totally prepared to do that but president moon called me and we had a great discussion a couple of days ago and he thanked me very much and i hope it works out i very much want to see it work out between the two countries i'd like to see them getting involved in the olympics and maybe things go from there and so i'm behind that one hundred percent he actually thanked me he said and a lot of people have said a lot of people have written that without my rhetoric and without my tough stance and such a stance i mean this is this is what has to be done if it has to be done that they wouldn't be talking about olympics that they wouldn't be talking right now. they're not taking this conversation not still if it's quality what do i hope they do i would love to see them take it beyond the olympics but we have a very good relationship with south korea i would love to see it go far beyond the olympics absolutely just at the appropriate time we'll get involved but i like the
8:13 pm
idea of the dealing on the olympics that should be between those two countries yes mr president if you asked the white house counsel to ask for anything else that's just not certain some stuff you want us to her. proper of the story by the way the times is way off or at least off but everything that i've done is one hundred percent proper if that's what i do is i do think it's proper and you know i guess the collusion now is dead because everyone found out after a year of study. there's been absolutely no collusion there's been no collusion between us and the russians now there has been collusion between hillary clinton and the d.n.c. and the russians unfortunately you people don't cover that very much but the only collusion is between hillary and the russians and the d.n.c. and the russians and one of those things ok any other questions some of what was your i'm sure you'll find it but the story was of. stand by general area general yosef. continue in many. areas here he was here.
8:14 pm
i. did you hear the question garrett is beautiful here is freezing it got so i did not serve this it will be arab continue to remain in the administration i said i hope so now if he leaves i'm going to say i'm very happy that he left ok. all right camilla gary. are you happy gary he just has a very big deal i think he's pretty happy yes i'm happy how is it for some of the people here for you gary hopefully will be safe for a long time yes i'm just following this conversation korean south korea are you willing to engage in some talks to come right now. as we've been talking and think her case of course if you it is the first place we absolutely have it is in the front of the surface if you know if it's coming to the table i think. we
8:15 pm
could still rise to the right now they're talking about us it's a start it's a big stick if i weren't involved they wouldn't be talking about olympics right now and they'd be doing no talking or they would be much more serious he knows i'm not messing around i'm not messing around not even a little bit not even one percent he understands it at the same time if we can come up with a very peaceful and very good solution we're working order with the wrecks we're working or with a lot of people if something can happen and something can come out of those talks that would be a great thing for all of humanity. that would be a great thing for the world three or four of us are you planning on involving yourself in that of a primary purpose of fun fetish barbarisms and finally my own mother says. you have to explain that to me some of it but i tell you they
8:16 pm
actually hit what you read but they want to be involved and we're going to be very wroth in fact not only of the senate also ahead and protecting them in some way you got her to come on set and whoever have to protect your fareed more republicans we have to have problems with that being said i think with a real bipartisan i think we're going to have some really great fight partisan bill but we need more republicans so that we can really get the rest of the make america great again agenda passed and so i will be actually working for incumbents and anybody else that has my kind of thinking and i think it's going to happen with the make a lot of trips to be very involved i think you folks are going to be very happy because you can be doing a lot of traveling better put some challenger sort of governments to. i don't see you see that happening. there's really no i think they've sort of scattered we had some a little was to say of alabama and i think as far as i'm concerned that was
8:17 pm
a shame that that was one situation never the us and you have to look at it with a new role being said we have the right policy and we have the right everything you still need a good candidate you have a good candidate just not good and so we should never last elements of that question just it play out i know you guys really some fairy comments quiets things he wanted to see amerasian tight seal i don't think civilians means less right now well to say for the case. by case basis in one of the or was going to happen or we're not going to have done we want to get rid of chain migration very important. and we want to get rid of the lottery system in addition to that we want some money for funding we need some additional border security these are great people and we need some border security we need ice but we want to make sure that in terms of what we want and we we want docket to happen we all everybody i think i can speak
8:18 pm
for everybody we want john cornyn from texas here we all want dokken to happen but we also want great security for a country so important we want to stop the drugs from flowing in very important so we have to get rid of the visa lottery you know the lottery is a disaster they give you people in fact as you know the person on the west side highway they killed eight people and so badly injured legs and arms so badly injured many more they came in through the lottery system and remember this the largest just common sense then that sending us their finest ok when somebody gets picked in the lottery we're not getting the best people so we have to get rid of the lottery system we have to get rid of chain migration we have to have the will lottery to change three suspects in that same piece of legislation you say legislation yes and i think frankly the democrats feel strongly about it too i mean chuck schumer is new york he saw somebody that came in through the lottery system
8:19 pm
he saw this man kill eight people on the west side highway that he knows very well and he loves like i do. i think he's ok with it i really think we'll have a lot of democrats support i hope so. yes mr into. this. that it's a goal pay for the world i have a very good relationship with mexico as you know we're negotiating nafta see how that goes yes but mexico will pay in some form mexico will pay for the war. or two or three. the forevermore asks you to come and speak with this to me personally are you committed still to doing that if we do understand too soon says there's been no collusion. there's been no crime. and in theory everybody tells me i'm not under investigation maybe hillary is i don't know but i'm like but there's been no collusion there's been no crime but we have been very open we could have done it
8:20 pm
two ways we could have been very close or would have taken years to do no sort of like when you've done nothing wrong let's be open and get it over with because honestly it's very very bad for a country it's making our country look foolish and this is a country that i don't want looking foolish and it's not going to look foolish as long as i'm here so we've been very open and we just want to get that over with ok everybody else thank you very much i appreciate it thank you thank you very much appreciate each. write a listening that to us president donald trump meeting with congressional leaders in camp david we heard that at the start of his remarks more disparaging comments about michael wolff following the publication of his book which has raised even more questions about trump state of mind about his mental health and his ability to
8:21 pm
govern but it's also seen a very public falling out between trump and his former strategic adviser steve bannon so let's talk to john hendren he's in washington d.c. staying across all of this and i suppose we had a taste of the key challenges or certainly an ongoing challenge for the donald trump this year john he's trying to forge a legislative agenda. but he is going to be haunted by two things the investigation into collusion with russia and continuing questions about whether he is fit for office. yeah you could see him there just struggling to stay on message not being able to help himself in talking about this book he's clearly rattled by that book and upset by the things he has seen in there and then also at the end as you say that miller investigation into the potential collusion the possibility of collusion between his campaign in the russian government those are the two things that are really knocking him off message right now the book will go away eventually
8:22 pm
but those questions about his mental acuity might not there are democrats who are raising that as a as an issue for his presidency and some of those democrats are pressing for an eventual impeachment of the president and if they can if they can continue to press this message that he's forgetful as the author of the book says he's repeating stories several times within a ten minute period of time that is only going to continue to damage him while he's pressing for immigration reform and all these other things and he this is a time when he really should be allowed to trumpet his passing of a major tax overhaul law he got a supreme court nominee through a while back so it has not been in altogether bad year for donald trump and here he is talking about the things he really wants to focus on at least or should want to focus on least doesn't seem to be able to help himself in talking about this book and of course he cannot help himself in fending off the questions that are going to
8:23 pm
continue to come about that moeller investigation and you you heard there he said he has still got faith in jeff sessions the the attorney general who has been criticized by trump himself for recusing himself from that miller investigation so a lot of stuff going on here that trump really is being knocked off message by right and also. determine president trump insisting that he will campaign alongside his policy in upcoming midterm elections but is that something that will make many republicans nervous is there a feeling that he could be more of a threat when it comes to maintaining the charts in congress. well interestingly only about a third of americans support president trump but those people are almost all within the republican base so it's a majority of republicans so there are many of those solidly republican districts where he could campaign where he would be helpful to those candidates but there are
8:24 pm
probably some other ones that are leaning more toward a centrist you know political stance in those areas it's possible that those republican candidates will not be asking president trump to come and speak to them because he is so unpopular i would thought it was interesting as well that he goes who took credit for a kind of beginning a reproach or moment between north and south korea considering cooperating over the olympics he's taking credit saying that his harsh stance pushed those two sides together i think that's a stretch. all right thanks very much john hendren with the latest from washington d.c. i want to turn to news from syria now where at least seventeen people have been killed by as strikes in the rebel held area of eastern ghouta artillery attacks were also launched by syrian forces on areas of the countryside outside the capital damascus have been reports of an increased number of as strikes deliberately targeting hospitals in rebel areas in the last ten days. now they've been
