accusations that he is mentally unfit for office describing himself in a tweet as a stable genius responding to criticism in a newly published book that cost doubt over his ability to do his job he posted actually throughout my life my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being like really small i went from very successful businessman to top t.v. star to president of the united states i think that would qualify as not smart but genius and a very stable genius at that michael was fire and fury claims that the president's staff knew him as a child a publication went on sale on friday four days early despite threats of legal action from trump's lawyers the president has described the tell all book is full of lies misrepresentations and sources that don't exist he insists he never even spoke to wolf a claim the author denies. or president has also turned his folk. it's to keep policies meeting congressional leaders account david infrastructure and welfare

reform was expected to be on the agenda as was immigration a top administration plans to ask congress for eighteen billion dollars to build a security wall along the mexican border while some democrats have outright rejected the plan both democrats and republicans has been working on a compromise to protect the border and to also protect the hundreds of thousands of young undocumented migrants well in the last hour mr trump has again insisted that he has the right man to lead his country speaking off to those talks at camp david he said he went to the best college was an excellent student and a top businessmen he also strongly criticized the book's author again i consider it a work of fiction and i think it's a disgrace that somebody is able to have something do something like that the libel laws are very weak in this country if they were strong you it would be very helpful you wouldn't have things like that happen where you can say whatever comes your

head but just so you know i never interviewed with him in the white house at all he was never in the oval office we didn't have an interview. and i did a quick interview with him a long time ago having to do with an article but i don't know this me and i guess sloppy steve brought him into the white house quite a bit and it was one of those things that's why sloppy steve is now looking for a job. so for this let's speak to john hendren in washington d.c. and so we heard the president and his congressional colleagues that trying very desperately to keep the focus on the legislative agenda for twenty eighteen spoke about challenges of a drug smuggling immigration bought the focus keeps coming back to the revelations and will spoke. as right if you want to rattle donald trump all you have to do is bring up this book he had so many other things to talk about today there were he was meeting with congressional leaders republicans at camp david for immigration
9:05 pm
they have a new plan for immigration one that was a key promise of trump's including building the border wall but he couldn't focus on that the first thing he apparently did was tweet out a barrage of tweets in defense of his own intellect in his own stability and that's not a position you want to be in as a sitting president arguing that you're smart enough and stable enough to hold that job and of course he had to return to that subject during the news conference when he was asked about the book which he says he claims is a work of fiction but it's really rattled the president and it's knocked him off message a time when he should be crowing about the tax plan he just passed the tax relief plan and this new immigration policy which got short shrift because of the focus on this book that has been going on now for days. and john we had president trump insisting that he was going to campaign alongside republicans for the upcoming
9:06 pm
twenty eighteen midterm elections now we know the republican candidates already facing a bit of an uphill struggle is president becoming more of a liability for the more of a threat. well he tried to salvage their campaign of roy moore a republican candidate in heavily heavily republican state. and he wasn't able to do that and there will be other candidates who will likely not be asking for mr trump's help because he has become so toxic at least in those swing districts now there are plenty of republican states where he has a lot of support still he has the support of about a third of americans with that includes a majority of republicans so there are areas where he really can help out the republican party and where he's likely to help get people elected but in those more moderate districts in the swing states they might not ask him to do that because he has become so divisive. and interestingly during that press conference the issue
9:07 pm
all of north and south korea came up he was asked about talks this that the first diplomatic contact between the two countries in over two years and he seemed to suggest that he was in a post to this he did and he also took credit for a kind of reproach him on between north and south korea in which they're talking about cooperating on the olympics he is somehow arguing that his hard stance on north korea has really driven north korea into potential cooperation with south korea it's hard to understand exactly how that chain of events work but he definitely took credit for that and maybe in the end if he is open to some kind of agreement he could look back on that later as a kind of progress but it's hard to balance that with some really belligerent
9:08 pm
tweets that have been highly critical of kim jong. indeed it's never a dull day there in d.c. thank you very much john hendren with all the latest. well now thousands of pro-government demonstrators have been rallying in iran in a show of strength after more than a week of anti-government protests the government supporters marched in the streets waving iranian flags and chanting anti western slogans iran's government has blamed western nations for the mentally on rest which is seen twenty two people killed and more than a thousand arrested in the last ten days iran has accused the u.s. of abusing its power as a permanent member of the u.n. security council offer it called emergency meeting on the protests will iran and russia both accuse washington of exploiting the protests to undermine the nuclear deal same bus drivers into iran with more. iran's leaders are no doubt celebrating what they'll consider another victory against the united states on the
9:09 pm
diplomatic front shortly after the u.n. security council met to discuss anti-government protests in iran the foreign minister zarif tweeted out that he was glad that the majority of security council member countries rebuffed america's attempt to misuse its power to bring what is essentially a domestic iranian affair on to the international stage he also called it another foreign policy blunder for the trump white house we also heard from iran's presidency president hassan rouhani his chief of staff in a statement said that the move by the united states at security council was both desperate and further isolated the united states itself on the international stage now as far as the protest themselves are concerned anti-government protests are all but over while pro-government rallies still continue as the government continues to cement its footprint on the streets later on on sunday lawmakers will meet to hold a close session of parliament where they will discuss the root causes of the recent unrest many lawmakers see it as foreign espionage that led to these protests and
9:10 pm
blame foreign countries for trying to create instability in iran and other lawmakers sympathize with protesters saying that they have valid concerns and valid grievances since many iranians suffer a great deal of economic hardship now whether they agree with the demonstrators or not lawmakers in iran do realize one thing that if they don't address economic concerns that these protests could happen again. open angry scenes in the occupied west bank as the patriarch of jerusalem attempted to leave manger square in bethlehem off to mocking off a duck's christmas if ellis the third has been at the center of growing public anger after being accused of selling off large swathes of church land to private businesses. all the protests and tensions in bethlehem of casa shadow of law many festive period as mama june reports. despite the best efforts of the organizers there has been a dampened sense of enthusiasm here in manger square in bethlehem in the occupied
9:11 pm
west bank far fewer people than would usually be here on orthodox christmas eve now part of the reason for that is the fact that there have been calls by groups to boycott the arrival of the greek orthodox patriarch the awful list the third because there is growing anger among palestinian christians about allegations that have been made in israeli media outlets that the greek orthodox patriarch has been involved in selling properties or selling lands to foreign tax havens and in those reports it's also been alleged that some of the buyers may end up being israeli businesses that's one reason why there are fewer people here because usually the ushers that would be here to try to welcome the greek patriarch who has not yet arrived they are basically turning a cold shoulder to the patriarch now we've also spoken to the church about these allegations and they have denied the allegations they have said in fact that was going on is that the greek orthodox patriarch it has in fact been trying to rectify
9:12 pm
bad deals that were made in the past and that that's really what's going on right now now there's another reason why there is such a dampen sense of enthusiasm and that's because of the sense of hopelessness that's really spreading far and wide here because of the decision just a month ago today by u.s. president donald trump like to recognize to slim as the capital of israel since that decision was made week after week we've seen protests that turn violent in the occupied west bank and in other areas and that's just one more reason why there's a sense of uncertainty and a sense of hopelessness at a time when usually people are so celebrate torreon festive. the new york times is reporting that egypt has asked media that play down opposition to president tom's controversial decision to move the u.s. embassy in israel to jerusalem and leaked phone recordings a senior egyptian intelligence officer reportedly told leading t.v. talk show host to influence their view as to back the decision that's despite egypt's public condemnation it comes as egypt and saudi arabia vetoed

a call from jordan for an emergency arab summit on jerusalem. we have specific requests the most important of which is the recognition of a palestinian state with your islam is its capital according to the truce in the fourth nine hundred sixty seven borders it's just as there was a political decision to recognize devotion is the capital of israel will now work to achieve an international political decision recognizing the palestinian state of the nine hundred sixty seven border with your ruefulness its capitals. now saudi media says eleven princes have been detained in riyadh and are awaiting trial off to staging a protest outside the royal palace the prince is reportedly being held in a tourist high security prison that's in contrast to dozens of other high profile figures who were detained in a luxury hotel last year during an anti-corruption drive there are conflicting reports about what sparked the protest some outlets say it was about the removalist

state subsidies all those talk about the previous round of detentions well all this comes as the saudi king announces plans to give a monthly allowance to state employees military and pension is to help offset the impact of economic reforms for the next year one point one eight million saudis employed by the government will get two hundred sixty seven dollars a month to help with the rising cost of living one point two million pensioners will receive one hundred thirty three dollars a month and they'll be a bonus of more than a thousand dollars for military personnel involved in the country's ongoing war in yemen this announcement comes days after the kingdom doubled petrol prices and introduced a five percent value added tax to a broad range of goods and services a budget plan released last month projected a deficit of fifty two billion dollars for two thousand and eighteen joseph catchy chan is a senior fellow at the king faisal center for research in islamic studies in riyadh and the author of several books on saudi arabia joins me now from mount lebanon via
9:15 pm
skype thanks very much for taking the time to speak to us i wanted to start by asking you about the arrest reports of another round of arrests by saudi princes eleven princes have been arrested we're talking about conflicting reports as to the reason they were protesting outside the palace in riyadh but what are you hearing about the reason behind these arrests. there are conflicting reports as to their identity obese individuals that have not been outsourced fall and the reasons why they were held clearly those this group is very different from the previous group that were arrested that was arrested last november the eleven digitals officially were arrested because they were complaining about the fact that they had asked for subsidies for winter and electricity for some reason they were denying other reports say that the fact there were presence of a prince who respects
9:16 pm
a q did you know the word two thousand and sixteen and come to us court you should it's very conflicting at this point we don't know exactly what is going on but presumably it is serious and out with these eleven to digitals to be to arrest that carted away to your high security prison. but even though the way in which that there are differences between this group of saudi princes they don't seem to have the profile that the first round of arrests have they are being kept in a high security prison where where is the others who are at that the ritz carlton hotel so there are differences here but can we conclude that it's very lightly that. regardless of the rationale these these sorts of arrests are likely to continue in the country. well the program before program is ongoing for programs arrestee individuals that have been arrested for corruption purposes
9:17 pm
that's one thing but if in fact individuals are beat arrested for other reasons the rationale becomes very important at this point and it is important to separate the wheat from the shaft i don't think that we should look at everything together these individuals these you know that individuals have been taken away to a high security prison whereas the previous troops were housed at the ritz carlton as you just mentioned so therefore i think that there is a slight difference in terms of what kind of grievances maybe. again may be held against these individuals and i suppose it is very difficult to make sense of the arrests and to verify anything that's taking place precisely because there are issues around transparency the rule of law and legal institutions. there is you know i think there should be careful with the server with the use of the term rule all you know there is a rule of law and there is
9:18 pm
a rule by law all to all of the way different from each other of your city the country has a constitution which is the one before our it's a monarchy it has very strict rules of place and in fact you have a new government goes trying to position itself straight through the identity of the production costs of the heir apparent or to assume power so therefore you are talking about a series of events that are following each other security related economic related and social relief that this is a full package and it will take time for all these differences to be sorted out and thank you very much jessica chan and the mount lebanon region thank you you thank. well in other developments saudi led coalition as strikes have targeted a fruit and vegetable market and gas facility in northern yemen witnesses say the strikes killed one person and left three others injured the area is under the

9:32 pm
ahead. has begun escaped with their three children across the border from the animal into bangladesh the end of december they join the more than six hundred fifty thousand refugees who fled the military crackdown on the region in rakhine state in which the young. she says her husband was killed as they tried to flee. that. we couldn't go anywhere because there was heavy fighting from all directions and my husband was shot dead by security forces there are very few people who still remain here they try to go to the forest and river fishing but the military does not allow them they say you can't go there anymore and you can't harvest the paddies either so people are not able to work the million mom true tells us you are not surrender and there is no ranger in our country go to the country where there are all ranges. of western governments including the u.s.
9:33 pm
of called the crackdown on the predominately muslim or hinge or ethnic cleansing but myanmar has denied access to any independent investigation in rakhine state. the reinjure have suffered at decades of persecution and violence that was stripped of their citizenship in what was then burma thirty five years ago the myanmar government considers them illegal immigrants from bangladesh and evidence of the brutality they have suffered in recent months is shocking if the charity doctors without borders says at least six thousand seven hundred were killed by the myanmar security forces between the end of august and late september it says at least seven hundred thirty range of children younger than five years old were among those killed mostly shot dead doctors without borders also says nearly ten percent of children who died were burned alive in their homes and at least five percent were beaten to death human rights watch and aid organizations working in
9:34 pm
these camps in neighboring bangladesh say myanmar soldiers gang raped women and young girls the refugees have escaped deaths in myanmar but the struggle to survive in the camps goes on the un says seven percent of children here are suffering severe acute malnutrition a condition that will kill if not treated properly. biggest challenge that we face right now is that this is the fastest growing refugee in the world think about washington d.c. but without health services without medicines without proper access to food we know recent studies that eighty percent of new arrivals need food assistance. if you know breaks of communicable diseases including measles and diptheria the camps aid organizations estimate around seventy percent of the world's a contaminated the government supplying the day should we say they will proceed with a voluntary repatriation scheme in the coming weeks. says she will never take her

participation less third know because of fear less political less people voting. i know about it and is hinders the strength of a democratic system. there are over three thousand four hundred elected positions up for grabs in the upcoming elections but it's candidates for local posts who are especially vulnerable targets by organized crime twenty one local public servants were murdered in two thousand and seventy which was also a record breaking year for homicides in mexico the concern now is over the potential for yet another exceptionally violent year as we approach the two thousand and eighteen general election when we get up a little al-jazeera mexico city election officials in honduras have rejected an appeal by the opposition to an all the results of november's presidential election present on our london and as was declared the winner after a narron he defeated opposition candidate salvador. election officials are saying
