recounting the horrors hundreds of nigerian migrants are brought home from libya where many say they were sold into slavery al jazeera has this exclusive report. one of the last rebel stronghold in syria is attacked by government warplanes as its troops retake territory in italy province. the main challenger to egypt's president abdul fattah el-sisi pulls out of the race amid reports that he may have been forced. and find out why they're all wearing black on the red carpet for the annual golden globe awards. the first thousands of nigerians every year leave home and try to make their way to europe in search of a better life but once they get to libya which is the main transit point from the

african continent to europe many of them find themselves trapped soldiers slaves tortured and abused but now the nigerian government has stepped in flying five hundred of the forty thousand or so migrant stranded in libya back home our correspondent armitage dresses traveling with them here's his exclusive report a cramped office in the center of tripoli is the only decent place these nigerian teenagers have seen in years they left school with promises of a life of opportunity and comfort nothing prepared them for what followed. joy is not her real name she says she was sold for one thousand one hundred dollars to buy her freedom she needed to pay on two thousand five hundred dollars. last week she and her friend saw a chance to escape from their bio and they took. her to guest reference so at

slaves but officials say as well as nigerian traffickers there are also libyans and some europeans in the trade. the nigerian government team on a fact finding mission in libya say they are shocked at what they saw and heard it talked about the various abuse systematic endemic and exploitation of all kinds but challenge to the senior officials as to the discrepancy between the numbers you know they came up with all kinds of not very convincing excuses this played into a narrative that we had been. told about that indeed. there are obviously interests that wanted to keep as many of them there as possible because they were commodities the delegation was told there are fourteen detention centers in libya other reports suggest they may be as many as thirty holding as many as forty thousand nigeria's the nigerian government is preparing for an influx of

1:06 pm
badly of a crowded almost three thousand migrants are believed to have drowned in the mediterranean last year. in syria government and russian jets have been bombarding opposition targets in the last rebel stronghold of the in the country at least twenty four civilians have been killed in the latest airstrikes throughout the province of idlib the air offensive is backing up ground troops who have recaptured strategically important places like harassed the fighting has forced thousands of civilians to flee to also border with turkey in freezing when winter temperatures and on sunday a car bomb in a city killed at least twenty five people activists say the attack was targeting the headquarters of one of the opposition groups where osama bin jeffery interpose the. the people of the city have become used to silence like this syrian

civilians yet again caught up inside a war with seemingly no end in sight the target one of the many rebel factions who control parts of it although no one claimed responsibility some pointed the finger at the assad government was fellow bashar we would leave we will die in syria. of the assad regime have been making gains in the northwestern parts of it live in hama provinces in the last forty eight hours if they can more areas in the countryside. syrian rebels have not been able to stand the government's air superiority. but the relentless campaign doesn't only target fighters this is what happens when people hear warplanes in the sky. the population of village has more than doubled in the last few years over a million displaced people have been transferred to ad lib after the government starvin siege tactics in other areas assad forces have also stepped up attacks on

eastern good visa two of the four deescalation zones agreed upon by syria iran russia and turkey. although there have been fewer attacks on farms and twenty three which are the other areas under the deal but the bombings never stopped completely . more than four hundred thousand people are besieged in the eastern border alone it was expected and there's a big agreement now between thirty russia and and. iran recently need to be. conflicting zon in. may from the sochi conference and basically the last. place for this union force fifty the un has declared that front civilians face a complete catastrophe because the assad government has paid deliveries in besieged areas. and as the guarantors of the deescalation deal get ready to meet in the
1:09 pm
russian city of softly later this month syrian civilians continue to suffer. all right let's move on kabul and now he is director of policy analysis is it you and mo on these scenes that we're witnessing particularly in italy province over reminder that the war the fighting is far from over in syria. absolutely right. i think right now what the russians are trying to do actually is to put maximum pressure on the opposition and be of almost last stronghold in italy in order to. force them to participate in the sushi in the sushi conference this is on one hand on the other hand we have been seeing escalation over the past few days actually in different regions are around different parts of syria fact and one of them was actually on the eve of the new year when the russian military airbase in me me me
1:10 pm
was actually under attack by the opposition and the russians there lost more than seven warplanes on the ground they have been destroyed by opposition file that actually drove the russians crazy about the whole issue but it's mainly about putting pressure on the opposition in order to force them to participate in sochi greater part of the opposition is actually very reluctant to go to sushi because they believe that suchi is not the police that the syrian constitution the syrian elections should be discussed all these things should be discussed in geneva and they don't want to actually switch in order to replace geneva because they they fear that the russians will put pressure on the opposition in order to give more concessions even on the political solution and on top of them this is why i believe russia is trying to humiliate even the opposition up right now there are trying actually to tell them forget about the departure of bashar assad to focus now on
1:11 pm
the things that we want to actually to focus on to talk about the constitution elections and. not in damascus not in geneva not anywhere else the opposition in syria perhaps the most significant failing of it has been its disunity isn't it absolutely and as we see also in this massive what appears to be a car bomb killing around twenty five people is an indication isn't it of so many different groups there are with different priorities and allegiances that's very true and this has been the problem from the very beginning within the syria within the sunni or positions. what kills in my opinion the syrian opposition is this regionalism and their says that every day every quarter of a city every street perhaps has its own faction that that was and those people actually it was very difficult from the very beginning to bring them together unite them and got one and when when when that was possible many times actually fought in bad clans supporters of the syrian opposition has not really very helpful in
1:12 pm
bringing them together so i think they contributed to the division of the opposition i'm talking about the foreign backers of the opposition contributing to the disunity the fraction and the division of the opposition more than actually they have contributed to their unity. thank you very much indeed. the seven month long blockade of catarrh is being discussed at a two day summit taking place in kuwait addressing the parliamentary meeting of the gulf cooperation council the g.c.c. the emir of kuwait urged nations to settle their differences or face many challenges in the future. said there has been some progress to settle the dispute but didn't say exactly what saudi arabia the u.s. egypt and bahrain all cut diplomatic ties with katter. what we have in common is we will never be affected by dispute we see it as
1:13 pm
a temporary however long it takes every one of us understands the deteriorating circumstances around us which represent a challenge to us all will understand the problems facing the g.c.c. and these problems require more meetings and consultations on all levels we will never be able to face these challenges individually. meanwhile u.n. investigation into the blockade has found that the g.c.c. crisis is negatively impacting the people of catherine the national human rights committee here in doha says the report shows the blockade is illegal. this report shows without a doubt that these procedures undertaking by the blockading countries are not to me a diplomatic severing of relations they are not just an economic boycott these a unilateral abusive up a tree measures that are impacting citizens and ex-pats in qatar all right let's go to our correspondent now mohammed values there at that conference that's being held
1:14 pm
in a mohammed remind us then all of the material impact of this blockade now in its seventh seventh month all of the people of. yes martin the material effect and impact of this blockade has been broadly an eatery today and mentioned in the report by the un human rights commission this mission that has been sent to qatar in november and spent two weeks here let me know if i hear that they have been denied access to saudi arabia and kuwait saudi arabia bahrain and and and the united arab emirates so they came only to qatar but collected a lot of material and this is the makes the content of this report today that we have just been listening to the human rights commission here the qatari rights commission has explained that it has this report has mentioned all the impact it
1:15 pm
has affected me disobedience other than the qataris the report says that these sanctions imposed by the blockade in countries have not distinguished between the qatari government and the normal citizens and it has not only impacted the qataris because of those who lost their businesses and their property their money there and they haven't been able to get in touch with their relatives in the blockaded countries but also has impacted even citizens of other the blockaded countries themselves those of them who have been living here in qatar those who have lost their ability to continue their education talking about students here those who have been denied to go to the religious sites and also the report has mentioned the violations in terms of the freedom of speech but as to actions that have been imposed the call to close our dizzy and the punishment that has been announced in the united arab emirates and other countries against people who criticize the blockade or talk in favor of qatar on their mobile phones s.m.s. messages or everything like this so they report it has actually included quite
1:16 pm
a lot of points even though it's the qatari commission today has said that i mean it has not given all the details about the number of people affected and the number of peace. been denied for instance religious rights go to the hard done for the qataris this is an official the first official confirmation by the un one of the major you one is to sions of what qatar has been reiterated during the last seven months so for them it is considered a kind of victory for human rights victory for those people the citizens who have been affected and the commission here today have has called on the qatari government to take into consideration this report to factor it into any future negotiations and even to abstain from negotiating with the other countries the blockade of countries until be recommendations included in the support has been heeded and complied with by the blockade in countries mohammed val thank you very much. we've got

a lot of come on this al-jazeera news hour including the french president arrives in china for a state visit trade and security expected to top the agenda making amends former trump strategist seed ban and back from explosive comments made about the u.s. president and in sports competitors tackle the extreme sun jeans of peru in the running. egypt's former prime minister ahmed shafik has ruled himself out of run out of the running for the upcoming presidential election he said in november that he intended to run later this year but he's now pulled out of contention saying he's not the perfect person to lead state affairs now that was said by twitter now according to the new york times shafique could have been influenced by the government to
1:18 pm
withdraw from the race one of your fixed lawyers reportedly said the government had threatened to investigate old corruption charges if shafiq remained in the race the lawyers claim is consistent with audio recording. was reportedly obtained by the new york times the newspaper says an egyptian intelligence officer was heard warning a t.v. presenter against criticizing shafique on his show because the government was quote still in talks with him now sheikh was seen as the most serious challenger to president abdul fattah el-sisi who has yet to announce his candidacy but is widely expected to run two other candidates have entered the twenty eight presidential race but both could be ruled in eligible to run if they're found guilty on charges that they say are politically motivated a lot to get through then abdullah al ahly on is assistant professor of history at georgetown university here in qatar and he'll help us unpack this thank you very much indeed for coming in first of all tell us about ahmed shafik and how
1:19 pm
surprising it is that his decision not to run in this in this election later on this year has been posted on twitter in a very very abrupt sentence well i think it certainly speaks to the. uncertainty that's been surrounding the egyptian regime for some time in terms of where it's finding its alliances politically when we look at someone like ahmad shafi for instance this is someone who course is part of the mubarak era. around which of course the revolution erupted in two thousand and eleven armature feet was longstanding minister under mubarak eventually he became the prime minister and then he decided to break with mubarak and eventually ran in the two thousand and twelve election which of course was the only open free election that egypt has ever had he ran against mohamed morsi from the muslim brotherhood it was extremely close race but the interesting thing about trophy at the time was that he was running on a counter-revolutionary platform which meant that he said he would crush the revolution he would return to order and stability that defined the mubarak era when he lost the election he retreated to the united arab emirates where he's been
1:20 pm
essentially in hiding for the last several years he was watched as the coup and folded there that brought sisi to power in egypt and since then he's been a sort of card in the back pocket of the. gulf states that is the saudi's and moralities have been hoping to use at some point in the future as a possible alternative to c.c. at the same time he had developed his own ambitions and so when he made that announcement in november it didn't come at the wishes of his host and so now we're seeing the results of that that explains and if what you say is right that explains why he's been in residence in the us and was apparently deported from the u.a.e. back to egypt well that was as a consequence of his announcement that he wanted to challenge sisi in the upcoming elections that wasn't something that he took any kind of let's say permission for it as a result of course he had kind of overstayed his welcome he was forced to return back to egypt where he kind of face the consequences of this open challenge to seize his authority and r.c.c.
1:21 pm
of course had the choice of allowing a kind of a semi open election that would have at least given him the veneer of legitimacy which he's been long seeking but i think it speaks volumes the fact that sisi doesn't even want. to have this kind of appearance of multiple candidates and it speaks to how weak and shaky his his claims to legitimacy are and ok so ahmed shafiq seems to be out of the running we haven't yet heard confirmation from sisi himself that he will contend but it's a foregone conclusion is it that he will take right and i think this is this is you know straight from the authoritarian playbook they usually don't make these announcements until they absolutely have to they keep people guessing in alternately they try to at least give this appearance that perhaps there there will be some hope that there could be some kind of an open a contest but as we've seen especially with the intimidation of many other candidates not just a few but many others who've put their name in the ring people who have absolutely no chance of winning but even the fact that they've been suppressed and silenced i think speaks to the fact that this is not going to be anything resembling an actual

hello there it was certainly hard to in sydney on sundays temperatures in some parts of the city made it to forty seven point three degrees and what do you do if it's quite that hot and if you're in the hottest city on earth we head down to the beach course if you're me i think i'd probably head to the fridge but i jest of course it is cooler by the beach we were at least five degrees cooler than the hottest part of the city so sensible thing to do temperatures have gladly foreland for today that it's all thanks to this area of cloud hits working its way down towards the southeast and as it's done so it's also brought in a fair amount of cloud a change in the wind direction and a lot of thunderstorms as well and some of those a pretty violence at the moment there rumbling their way across parts of it toria new south wales and sydney is now seeing those thunderstorms as well so i think that definitely change for the better for us in sydney but while things are changing their elsewhere they're beginning to hot up and that's in the northwest you see lots of cloud over the top and as you normally do at this time of year

that's now beginning to pull itself together and it looks like they could well be a cycling developing here as we head through the next day or so so. we look at the forecast then if we had to choose that into wednesday you can see that system gradually working its way there giving us some heavy rain and these systems in the northwest can be very intense like the recent storm hilda the borders four hundred twenty nine millimeters of rain in only two days. the weather sponsored by cats on a race. unbelievable it sounds like an agreement between criminal bosses it's like trading in stolen goods that have been taken by the place if anyone ever comes to ask the question then sort of throw their hands up in the air and say i don't know i was just nominee director we're doing a investigation into. ukraine could you pay bribes you've been corrupt and are being corrupt i did just what the president say al-jazeera investigations the only go at this time. discover

president called for the e.u. and china to work together on president xi jinping a trillion dollar project to connect asia and europe by road rail and c. but he said the projects benefits must be shared president also pledged to visit china every year for the duration of his presidency mcbride has more from beijing. president macron has begun his visit in the ancient city of scheana home of the terra cotta warriors but also more symbolically it's one of the departure points for the ancient silk road to trade routes connecting china with the west and macron is keen to play up to the historic nature of the franco chinese relationship and in a wide ranging speech he went into the details of how france can continue to work with china on the world stage in a number of different areas and specifically in the development of africa china was
1:34 pm
reminded about france's long relationship through the colonial period with a number of countries in africa macron compared that with china's interests now china of course has been building up relationships with a number of different african countries investing heavily in a lot of infrastructure projects they're reminded is hosts about the responsibilities that comes with that you cannot simply build something can walk away from it pledging to work with the chinese to tackle things like corruption in africa basically having the message that china should not make the same mistakes as us this isn't a good it is economy. we need to improve development education health and the economy in africa by working together we can change the world for africa the trip continues after she and to beijing where much of the deals related to this trip the

visit from president mccrum the president she has got what he wanted he wanted a u. approval didn't he for the belgium road initiative which is already got yes indeed the one belt one rolled initiative is not only important to china but to almost one hundred countries in the world including many countries in europe including france and i think president micron is doing the right thing to endorse the one belled world rolled initiative was again on behalf of the french government and hopefully china and france and all the other almost one hundred countries can join hands in promoting this a major infrastructure project and enable all the parties if the country is to benefit from this one world initiative and in the past china perhaps directed it. its attentions if you like through the u.k. for access to the e.u.
1:37 pm
can we say now obviously with the brics britain coming out of the e.u. that france is taking over the mantle france has to be the conduit if you like between beijing and europe. i disagree a little bit of outs about the. premise of your question i think that traditionally china has attached a lot of importance not only to u.k. but also to france and germany in europe and china french relations have always been very important both in terms of trade economic relations problem also in terms of political relations the two countries share actually many similar views on international relations paul france and china are permanent member states of the security council of the united nations and the two countries have been cordy to lead positions are many important international issues for years and i hope
1:38 pm
with the brics it happening as we speak china french relations will remain very strong arm and will take on new time mentions going forward because france and germany for example remain the two most important e.u. member states as far as china is concerned and it seems very much as a europe and while at least front of president would like to join in the chinese project in terms of its expansion in africa is that something that beijing would be willing to contemplate. oh yes indeed i think china has been a major investor in africa for several decades and has been leading the international effort in building up a capacity is for many african countries it is also true that france still
1:39 pm
keeps a lot of influence in many french speaking countries in particular and i think in these countries china and france can really team up together and we can work together to ensure that the recipient countries can benefit in the matzoh been away from the capital investment from china but also from the better knowledge about the local conditions about the culture that france has accumulated over many many decades so this is a win win situation for both china and france but also more importantly it is a wee wee wee in situ issue for the recipient african countries themselves all right victor gao thank you very much indeed there one student has died in protests in sudan over the price of bread police arrested a prominent opposition leader and confiscated newspapers in
