so countries around the world have walked to memorialize these events that have shaped that partition is not about the political events that led up to partition it's about the impact on each person who went through it it's really important that we highlight the stories of humanity hopefully one outcome on this would be that we remember our shared humanity and the shared history. this is al jazeera. blowups all right but you're watching the al-jazeera news our life one headquarters here in doha coming up in the next sixty minutes following the strained relations north and south korea are due to hold rare talks in
2:01 am
a few hours time. salvadorian immigrants in the u.s. all given a deadline to leave or face deportation. syrian government forces ramp up their offensive to take back to deliver province declared a deescalation zone. and was he forced to step out of the race egypt's former prime minister rules himself out of the upcoming presidential election. good to have you with us on the news hour in a few hours time north and south korea will hold their first time level talks in more than two years now the rare meeting is expected to focus on the north's participation in next month's winter olympics in pyongyang chang souls been projecting enthusiasm about the talks but some are questioning whether the lead to any real progress florence louis has more from the south korean capital this
2:02 am
was the last formal face to face meeting between north and south korean officials in december two thousand and fifteen the two sides discussed reunions of families separated by the korean war and economic cooperation. that is make a good start and open the great path to reunification. despite the initial optimism the talks broke down and in the two years since north korea has fired more than forty missiles and conducted three nuclear tests to v.s.e. escalating tensions on the korean peninsula but at the start of this year north korean leader kim jong il unexpectedly proposed dialogue with the south and. the focus of the discussions due to take place on tuesday at the truce village of panmunjom will be on north korea's participation in the two thousand and eight winter olympics in south korea next month and on improving into korean ties the
2:03 am
last time north korean athletes visited the south was for the asian games in two thousand and fourteen. sporting events have been useful in providing diplomatic openings between the two koreas but ultimately led nowhere and some analysts are skeptical of north korea's true intentions this time because of the effectiveness of the economic sanctions you know some of the fires the value of south korea as an alternative source of financial relief and using the pension on the ground. as punishment for its nuclear weapons testing north korea has been subjected to increasingly tighter sanctions including one that effectively slashes its petrol imports by ninety percent but kim has vowed to continue with his country's nuclear program calling for the mass production and deployment of nuclear warheads and miss else. alternately there is no guarantee that the north korea's peace officer will
2:04 am
continue northward north korea can easily make a sudden change of attitude after the end of the winter olympic games south korean officials are aware of that and preston when jay in his cautioned against expecting too much from the upcoming talks but engagement with north korea remains the best option to easing tensions on the korean peninsula lawrence let me al-jazeera so. well you know shit daniel baldwin is a research fellow at your insight university institute of north korean studies joins me now via skype from seoul good to have you with us on the program let's begin with the knowledge that the olympics will be the subject that will break the ice is the best way forward or best we all have no argument and the congress is. awesome perhaps they're not war. but i'm trying. it's eight so in the short time the indian government.
2:05 am
and now they're even have to hear some spanish another. is that everybody's interest would be no indeed i mean two years of silence and there's a great deal to discuss including north korea's missile development a nuclear capability i mean are these subjects that can be discussed now or put on the agenda for later discussion. oh you know of the statements issued by the i mean there are were national news there are you know. here i mean that when there are some here no money. is going. on on the table is i believe that this is as i first tried the focus will be how do you know are you know are still if you've been on this mission because now we've got him and so i mean the. meetings are separate
2:06 am
families sanctions obviously have been the hot topic in recent weeks in the beginning to hurt north korea but they're not a solution to a long long term stability in the region as many might think they only anger pyongyang more and yet north korea knows that more missile launches means more punishment have they realize that and is that the reason that they've decided to come to the discussion table a new use the olympics as a precondition but a precursor. well north korea must have been feeling. you know. they're not really. anxious but at the same time the north korean reduce our. it's a new. it's a little bit it's not changed so it's race whether or not really is bring will be
2:07 am
if you want to reduce the able. any part of the united states or pressure of the of the imposed by international community here you know that this will create. very earth or just see in a couple of hours what is said we're going back to south korea for the moment thanks for joining us from seoul. now the u.s. government has decided it will terminate the temporary protected status of more than two hundred sixty thousand immigrants from el salvador. protesters rallied against a move outside the white house people from el salvador were allowed to live and work in the u.s. after two large earthquakes hit the country in two thousand and one their so-called temporary protected status will now ended september next year let's go to diane estabrook who's following the story for us our correspondent in washington d.c.
2:08 am
hi diane first it was the haitians that was the salvadorians truckers making good on his promise to deal with immigrants legal or illegal or otherwise and that must run shivers down the spine of those wondering about their fate in the usa. absolutely and these are some of these people have been here for as long as seventeen years that have children here that know no other home but the united states these folks might have a couple of alternatives the administration says that they could pursue lawful immigration now that could mean getting a work visa could also mean becoming a naturalized citizen but the problem with that is it's a lengthy process and these people only have eighteen months before they have to get out of the u.s. now the other option too is a humanitarian groups might be able to appeal to the administration to maybe extend t.p.s. one of the things that they might point to is the fact that the u.s. state department issued a travel warning it by using americans not to travel to el salvador because of gang
2:09 am
activity and other crimes they also say that it's mean spirited to send these immigrants back to those conditions but you know keep in mind as you said this is an administration that's been very tough on people that are undocumented here in the united states and so it may be very tough to to sway them be able to stay in the united states i mean you touched on some of the elements that those affected could sort of follow legal routes for example we see with could we see this issue end up in the cold is very similar to the muslim. several several countries in the middle east. well this isn't it this isn't anything where the administration is necessarily breaking the law i mean this is temporary status that was granted to these people because of
2:10 am
a crisis. what the administration is saying is this is something that's turned in to sort of a what they call it was i permanent solution for these people they were brought over here because of a natural disaster in some cases some people come here because of civil wars what the administration is saying is homeland security has taken a look at el salvador and determined that it is safe for them to go back hospitals have been repaired homes have been rebuilt electricity has been reinstalled and so they can go back there so they could try to challenge this potentially in the courts but that could be difficult and of course you know as you say there is a precedence of people coming to the u.s. on this legislation through civil war for example many bowls of people from bosnia herzegovina the balkans came to the u.s. in the early ninety's what with the civil war in the former yugoslavia it's only a temporary fix and it has to be understood perhaps by a rule to insert this isn't
2:11 am
a generous gesture by the u.s. they were given you might say shelter for a short space of time or that those coming did no illusion as to what the prerequisites were for entering the us at that moment in time. yeah you're absolutely right and in the case of the people from el salvador and people from haiti and some of these other countries like sudan in the case of el salvador this was they came here under president bush he extended it they have to it gets extended every eighteen months and other administrations have continued to extend it extended president bush then president obama now president trump so yes this was supposed to be meant as a temporary haven for these people and then when the administration determines that it's safe for them to go back then they need to go back unless they do something to apply for permanent status here in the united states as i mentioned earlier like a visa or becoming a naturalized citizen which is what happens in the coming weeks on this one for the

in two thousand and fifteen after years of delays on monday president hassan rouhani had this reminder donald trump has failed every time the white house has tried to confront iran. and the foreign ministry warned washington not to do anything it might regret. we have to wait for their decision as for iran stance we've made all the necessary predictions about any scenario and all options for different situations are on the table depending on what the united states decides to do. at a security conference in tehran attended by foreign dignitaries and regional allies iran's defense minister told us that the u.s. is orchestrating artificial conflicts in the middle east to create perpetual war. maybe. we understand well why do i especially the us are pursuing iran of hope this is a total american story that says for the progress of america's economy staging wars is inevitable so from their perspective it's necessary to produce permanent war

hundred sixty thousand immigrants from el salvador protesters rallied against the move outside the white house also twenty four civilians have been killed near the syrian city of idlib as government strikes bob barr the region government forces are advancing on the rebel held territory forcing thousands of civilians to flee towards the turkish border. now people close to media personality and business from an opera winfrey say she's considering a run for the u.s. presidency in twenty twenty the hash tag hash tag opera twenty twenty began trending on twitter on sunday after she gave a rousing speech at the golden globe awards and hollywood fisher reports say new day is all. she's best known for a talk show which made her billions of dollars know the talk is of oprah running for president for too long women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men. but their time is up.
2:33 am
comments at the golden globe awards in hollywood and several standing ovations was described as inspiring by those in attendance and brought the hashtag oprah twenty twenty trending on twitter but while the idea has growing support the media giant has already said she doesn't want to run for office wondering if you've narrowed down your shortlist of b.p. candidates. and how she's lost her mind. donald trump went from a hugely popular reality t.v. show to the presidency his star power in name recognition his brand helped significantly several democrats have been named as possible candidates for twenty twenty. cory booker joe biden elizabeth warren and kiersten jila brand are just a few of the names being thrown around none i was well known as oprah but one political analyst strikes a note of caution i think that's a very huge and tremendously for someone who has operated as a media personality moving into the space of governing we are at we're already
2:34 am
seeing how that hasn't worked out as many people had hoped it would oprah has done nothing to that don't speculation of a presidential run but there's still two years before the race for the white house starts to get really serious. alan fischer al-jazeera washington ok man is an assistant professor of philosophy at cornell university she's also the author of down girl the logic of massage and he joins me now via skype from ithaca in new york state could have you with us on al-jazeera kate is it really too early to start talking about oprah as a potential presidential candidate or should we be taking this quite seriously. i think it's mostly speculation at this point and i'm not sure how reductive it is. i think it might be a good opportunity there are no to be distinctive barriers that women particularly women of color face when we start to see how or how important is it then that one
2:35 am
should have a proven track record in governance not a proven track record in the media industry as we're seeing at the moment with the current president of the united states in all sorts of trouble it seems to me very important indeed and although i am a big fan she was infinitely more qualified and competent than child but that's a marrying r. and i don't think we should be looking. very worrying trend politicians particularly not president i mean to oprah winfrey level it is where she's black she's a woman. why does she have the influence that she has that radiates beyond the normal media personality because she does cut down through barriers through social groups through the political spectrum there isn't anybody she doesn't know and she actually manages to speak to the poorest of the poor to the richest of the
2:36 am
rich. well she's very brilliant and she you know fortunately been given credit where it's due for what she has achieved that doesn't however mean that she wouldn't be subject to instant suspicion and consternation and endless criticism you've actually read so we saw a very you know predictable trends play out with hillary clinton she was in two thousand and thirteen her and almost seventy percent approval rating after leaving her secretary of state decision and that plummeted to. around thirty five to set and was hovering at forty percent when she was actively seeking office so let's not lose sight of the fact that women need to try to run for these positions chicory against dominant men tend to be taken
2:37 am
down but in the run up to the trump presidency we saw michelle obama for example speaking very strongly very mentally passionately about politics in the u.s. in support of hillary clinton a senior white politician let's just let's just finally just try and focus on the fact that it is difficult for a woman to succeed in politics and certainly for the top job in america comparison to the united kingdom where we've seen two female prime ministers. yes very interesting differences and i think one of them is that when you have a head to head competition directly between a man and a woman and this i think you have begun as a trend for women of color it tends to be a method biased in favor of white men so that impurity demonstrably will and i think it would be foolish to think that our would be an exception to that even though she's currently universally beloved there are real. or almost universally
2:38 am
the real test is what happens when she actually stands it costs the way men are in a jar and then hostility turns to come out and i think again that we need to look at this intersection where you realize that for a woman of color that's going to be an easy and. growing a barrier to the kind of success that. if she were to run i think those predictions are. probably just told you interesting time certainly i will have to keep a very close eye on this one for the moment kate man in ithaca in new york state thanks for joining us on al-jazeera thank you. giant apple is under new pressure this time for from its a biggest investors not to major shareholders have sent a letter to the company has yet to address concerns over smartphone addiction amongst young children and they said paying special attention to the health and
2:39 am
development of the next generation is both good business and the right thing to do they cited a study which says sixty seven percent of teachers surveyed were finding that the number of students were distracted by digital devices in classrooms and that was growing seventy five percent of them say students' ability to focus on studies has decreased and the letter mentions that u.s. teenagers who spend five hours or more a day on smartphones at seventy one percent more likely to have a risk factor for suicide and ninety percent of teachers surveyed say that the number of students with emotional challenges has also risen well earlier we spoke to technology writer moody believes the focus may soon move from apple of to the big social media software companies. we've seen over the last year that social media is actually having a massive impact on the whole of society particularly in the political context where we find out that the advertising that drives social media let's remember that social media are free because of the advertising that is put on them and that's
2:40 am
advertising having a big impact on society in all ways so i think the concentration ultimately will be on the social media applications and again that's what children like doing i mean they really love social media up so i think this is really about that but shrewdly it's using apple as a kind of proxy to deal with this apple actually isn't in the business of getting people addicted to using these services as much as possible they just want people to buy that phone now there are only limited things that apple itself can do for example it can limit the amount of time that children spend on their devices or it can limit access to particular services ultimately i think it's going to be companies like facebook and google and twitter and all the others that will have to get involved to provide a much finer get grained control so that parents can stipulate i know something ridiculous like you can only send three hundred messages a day because if you do that kind of thing then children will begin to realize ok i'm this limit what i'm doing so i get the full benefit of that french president
