1:01 pm
in doha coming up in the next sixty minutes. on the move with nowhere to go thousands of civilians are unable to escape fighting in northern syria. also a gunman stormed the offices of a global aid agency in afghanistan after a suicide bombing at the entrance. and egypt's presidential hopeful withdraws from the election campaign a day after he was detained by the military. i'm going to get your ask out with our top sports story for the first time there will be a career in play in the semifinals of a tennis grand slam dunk chung's next opponent could be but ephedra. gadhafi company all the news are five days of fighting hundred five thousand people are escaping. in the war zone in northern syria now turkey's offensive against
1:02 pm
kurdish fighters is showing few signs of actually letting up now many civilians are trying to escape the kurdish controlled city of a freend through therion government held areas to the south they're hoping to get to an enclave inside aleppo city controlled by kurdish forces human rights activists say government forces are blocking their escape turkish forces are targeting y p g kurdish fighters who they call terrorists turkey is to force the wipe out of a free and uncreative thirty kilometer deep buffer zone to protect the border with syria our correspondent who's following events forces stephanie decker joins me live now from the turkey syria border i mean we are getting an idea of how many people are becoming displaced according to the u.n. and that situation isn't going to get any better while the conflict continues. that's right and it's only day five the numbers that the u.n.
1:03 pm
is giving according to their sources on the ground are roughly five thousand people displaced by the fighting particularly along the border so and that is where we are actually very close to syria just behind that mountain i can tell you the military activity here is quite apparent we've had jets in the skies above us is a base a little further along has been helicopters hovering over had and we've heard the good lad sound of heavy artillery so it is an act of battle we know this but certainly when it comes to the civilians it is concerning because they have nowhere to go because of course turkey's borders the shot you have the east of africa and surrounded by free syrian army fighters the south has also got another rebel group and turkish military you have a small pocket out to government controlled areas but we understand from various reports according to the u.n. as well that some people who have managed to make it out have been sent back and reports that the local authorities enough feet have closed all the roads so it is incredibly difficult i can tell you it is also winter it is very cold the people
1:04 pm
been displaced it's wet there's nothing that will draw your clothes if you do get caught in a rain shower and it's freezing so it is it's going to be a desperate situation for them going forward we're going to follow the link of the weather a little bit later old stuff because the problem lol so as you say have closed off the borders and checkpoints so politically it's really just a matter of time before the accusations of human shields rears its head. well that's already happened turkey from day one said that the white p.g. was using civilians as human shields you're now getting reports from some of our sources and also the u.n. saying that they were concerned that authorities and block the roads other people will tell you that the y.p. g. wants to make sure civilians don't need because they're afraid that turkey will flatten the city so you have this whole sort of you know accusations pointing at another site that's the problem with covering syria so it's been the problem for years and that is a very active propaganda war whether it is you know things coming out of turkey
1:05 pm
things coming out of the white b.g. for example turkey says it's killed over two hundred sixty y. p.g. fighters in the last few days the white p.g. says it's killed over thirty seven turkish soldiers and also you know blew up three armored vehicles these things are impossible to confirm and constant you get the sort of information coming out so it really is a puzzle that through sources you have to sort of weave together and you sort of backtrack it with what the u.n. is hearing to finally get a picture and i think one thing we are clear about is that the civilians are going to be facing the most challenges as this war moves forward leave it. with you through the day thank you. well bad weather has been hampering turkey's fighting it's also led to some tragic deaths in neighboring lebanon over the weekend fifteen syrian refugees were found frozen to death while trying to cross the mountainous. correspondent for us live in the bekaa valley in lebanon i mean the deaths of these
1:06 pm
syrians zaina highlights really the desperate situation the displaced are experiencing and the issue of people trafficking abusing the desperate reality that these migrants a facing. and i must mention to nobody. from that area says that team syrian refugees. are used to make their way from syria into the mountains. and there was a fierce snowstorm and these people were on one of the camps where those people used to live and some of the people here are survivors were on that mountain trail it is an hour journey from lebanon to syria and now the question is why did these people go to syria we asked actually fifty three they are going to be living here she told one child with. the money this medically to provide immediate treatment
1:07 pm
a lot of. work to. her child and then she had to make her way back here because her family here two young children lost their mother and my sister in law and her father in law. trying to hurt others like you mentioned they make news like these people they charge him a hundred dollars why do you have to take it it's because the lebanese authorities have to order. or do it in that way for for three years now since two thousand and fifteen they do not allow refugees to enter the country anymore looking on says we can't we can't provide assistance for these people we are facing a loss of. you know obstacles and we need money to help these people so the people here are asking for if you please over the border you cannot make changes joining going back and coming back to lebanon we're ready to pay one hundred dollars fee but then you come to. syria. and we have to tell you where are we going to
1:08 pm
go i'm just where these people are we have to remember everything is. destroyed and their house is destroyed there's no livelihood to live here because they get a company united nations about one hundred dollars a month which allows them to survive and they also find. harvest in the agricultural land you can't leave it there for now of course amongst those at least some happy people there those youngsters. in the back of ali thanks and. well to those meteorologists and folks who has been on that to talk about those conditions in syria we've been talking about this weather for the last few days of stuff cold and with richard as well and it seems to be hitting that area pretty hard now i mean how big is the front and and how cold is it going to get. a pretty large system this one a nasty little area of low pressure that's been sitting just across that eastern side of the mediterranean the making its way through it's going to stay pretty miserable over the next few days if you take a look at the satellite picture you can see just how cloudy has been the clouds
1:09 pm
been swirling away across a similar area for the past few days worst of the rain really set in last thursday but it did turn to snow overnight. less bad nation we say so is that it will turn somewhat milder as we go on through the next few days so we'll see that the really cold air starting to move out of the of the way but the rain does stay in the forecast over the next few days stays there for the next few days and how long can this particular type of front stay in the area considering what it's made january at the moment and we're not expecting winter such to clear from the area maybe till early march yeah yeah that's right so this particular feature well. actually make its way further eastward show you the forecast charts that we do have that will give us an indication of just when we are seeing the wet weather move out of the way so this is the situation now and bear in mind in the last week we had temperatures in there at around seventeen celsius now we're looking at struggling
1:10 pm
to get into double figures so that's an indication of of how cool it has been over on the coast it was a touch milder than that but we had we saw it turning to snow as you went on through the course of the weekend you can see a lot of getting up to around ten celsius there as we go on into thursday the wet weather still very much in place it eases a little further ways we're still seeing snow over the northern flank for sure but we are looking at the snow over the mountains continuing but it's rain for the south it will ease as we go on into the latter part of the weekend as you know as for if you're living in a plastic tent whether it's ten or eleven degrees rain or snow it's still miserable it's still miserable where usually thanks very much over to thank you now elsewhere in syria at least twenty one people have suffered breathing problems after a suspected chemical attack on a rebel held enclave near the capital damascus the syrian observatory for human rights accuses government forces of using chlorine gas in duma on monday the attack prompted warnings from the international community diplomats from twenty nine countries met in paris to push for sanctions and criminal charges against anyone
1:11 pm
responsible for similar chemical attacks. the united nations security council has met to discuss the use of chemical weapons in syria christine salumi reports from the un in new york. russia called this last minute security council meeting on the issue of chemical weapons in syria to defend itself against attacks coming from the united states alleging that russia was ultimately responsible for ongoing chemical attacks in syria because it had failed to authorize ongoing investigations by the u.n. into those attacks the u.s. and russian ambassador were quite friendly on their way into the meeting but once that meeting took off into formal statements they went on the attack the russians said they are all for accountability in syria when it comes to chemical weapons but past investigations they said were unscientific and politically motivated those past investigations found evidence that syria and ice will both have used chemical
1:12 pm
weapons syria of course denies that they have used chemical weapons russia suggested that the recent attack being talked about and eastern ghouta was actually being manufactured or somehow exploited by the west start a new company this is not seem strange to anybody that this alleged episode the veracity of which is yet to be confirmed or perpetrators yet to be identified for some reasons converges with the meeting in paris in the forthcoming syrian national dialogue in sochi when russia does not like the facts they try and distract the conversation that's because the facts come back over and over again to the truth russia wants to hide that the assad regime continues to use chemical weapons against its own people russia also announced it's putting forward a new proposal to address chemical weapons used in syria but the united kingdom pointed out in its remarks that past proposals undermine the council's intend to
1:13 pm
hold the government of syria accountable and said focusing. nonstate actors like i saw clearly this will be a problem going forward something that will have to be negotiated the united states for its part said that it would not accept any proposal that undermines its ability to get at the truth still plenty ahead here on the al-jazeera news hour including a health crisis in indonesia's remote papá province where a missile outbreak is fair to have killed hundreds of people we have an exclusive report. presiding over resource rich but chaotic economies zimbabwe's a new leader seeks earned investment friendly image at the world economic forum. and in sport the bron james hits a scoring milestone in the n.b.a. and he's the youngest person to do it show what happened news in sport.
1:14 pm
where gunmen have stormed the office of save the children aid agency in eastern afghanistan the attack began with a suicide bombing in front of the compound in jalalabad two people have been killed including one policeman at least twelve or wounded the taliban has denied any involvement jennifer glass joins us now live from afghanistan our correspondent keeping an eye on the situation and that is the first question what is the situation right now at the location. well so it's still going on five hours after that attack began we have a few more details from the provincial governor spokesman two attackers are already dead one of them detonated his suicide vest another was shot by afghan special forces but the third attacker continues to hold afghan police inside the building at bay they cleared two floors in this three story building but the basement the top floor still problematic the top floor is on fire right now and we know that twelve people were injured in the initial blast nine of them have already been
1:15 pm
discharged from hospital three of them are critical and this so going on for five hours now and save the children has issued a statement saying that they are very devastated by the news of this attack that their primary concern is the safety and security of their staff members it's not clear how many if any staff members are trapped inside that building and so another devastating attack for afghanistan just five days after an attack here in kabul due to the talk about of issued a statement saying they're not responsible if the who all the likely suspects jennifer well the most likely culprit would be i saw all the islamic state or days shows the afghans call and they have a very big stronghold in eastern afghanistan and usually if it's not the taliban it's i saw or it's the haqqani network a taliban affiliated pakistan based organization who were accused of being. involved in the planning of the attack on the intercontinental hotel here on
1:16 pm
saturday and sunday to kill twenty two people so really the main culprits would be i saw in that kind of network before the bridge if i will leave it. in kabul. is the afghan ambassador to qatar to as we know here in the studio to talk with us thank you could just be good to be here thank you can we just begin with your reaction to the attack in jalalabad. will unfortunately these kind of a occur from time time to. this one unfortunately was against an aid agency that is working in afghanistan providing services for mother and children so there's pretty. good an agency that is not involved in war but is providing help to the very poor of all over afghanistan the unicef the work if i can supplement that by saying we know how important these are to afghanistan in its
1:17 pm
current situation what protection is your government offering to aid agencies not just in jalalabad but also in kabul that all the wider areas quite a bit our government is trying to share security information with them often the government is involved to go in look at the environment see where they're living and they train the the guards the usually in addition to the the government provides additional guards to make sure that they are not there but from time to time it happens. but the situation afghanistan security wise is much much improved now we have better security now in terms of trained individuals train police and also they're better equipped and better experience now that mr bassett it doesn't seem to stop the ongoing attacks that do you might say give your country the reputation of being in secure and unstable i mean just if you look at the attack at
1:18 pm
the weekend on a major hotel in kabul the security of that was given to a private operator obviously there's an investigation ongoing but your president continues to promise the international community that he can keep afghans safe and we've seen time and time again december last year fifty dead at a cultural center in kabul last october two shia mosques attacked for thirty dead forty five injured assurer in september sixth at a shia center it doesn't seem that you were able to secure the country regardless of what kabul it's a. what doesn't get to the news in the world the international community doesn't know how many how many potential attacks are prevented by our security force that is very important that information is with us and with our government but unfortunately those who are trying to destabilize the country their. attacks and their activity has also increased but overall i'm sharing with you our security
1:19 pm
situation has improved and hopefully it will get much better do you also think that there is a scenario where you may as a government blame other agencies or even your neighbors as being part of the problem within afghanistan but afghans themselves are very. would it be correct they are very in secure about the way kabul is ensuring their safety they have no confidence in the government even in areas where you say you are in charge. well unfortunately in a war situation people do worry the feeling of security in security comes there but our people also know that the situation has improved considerably they know how many police we used to have and how many we have how many helicopters it's rather that we had before and how many we have now and also there is something very important current that is very hopeful over those words so we'll leave it there but a cocker to catarrh from afghanistan thank you very much for joining us here on q.
1:20 pm
of the studio because i think. in egypt another challenger to president of the c.c. has cancelled his election campaign after being arrested something unknown was detained by soldiers on tuesday after announcing that he was a candidate for the presidential election in march egypt's elections committee says the former army chief of staff was removed from the ballot because it's illegal for military commanders to run for political office several other presidential hopefuls have dropped out of the election over the past few weeks. and worse that the nephew of former leader anwar sadat ended his campaign last week he said it's to protect his campaign workers from intimidation or unrest the former prime minister amateur feet also tweeted that his withdrawal from the race is going to happen two weeks ago that was after he was deported from the united arab emirates where he was living in exile chics lawyers say that he was arrested as soon as he landed in
1:21 pm
cairo and human rights work early is still securing enough signatures to challenge sisi but he's facing a charge of offending public decency if the verdict is upheld in march he will be disqualified from the election and then there's an army colonel that consol why he was sentenced by a military court last month to six years in prison after announcing his plans to run for the presidency some he had the is a middle east analyst and he joins me now from our london studio good to have you with us i mean it's interesting that some in a would actually. enter the competition throw his hat into the ring knowing that he may well be disqualified or arrested he must have had a knowledge that there is some sort of ground support within the military services or with the public at large that sees him as a potential candidate. i think that's very true i think what this demonstrates is
1:22 pm
that the army is losing its ability to keep its ranks in order i remember is also part of the army and served as prime minister and he was he disobeyed the army and then i was his intention to run for presidency and likewise i think semi and then even in the days when sisi took over power in his military coup there were rumors that semi and then did not necessarily like the prospect that semi and then was for reconciliation with the muslim brotherhood and he's always been touted as a potential conciliatory candidate for the presidency of egypt of course don't forget that semi and then was also very brazen in his approach to the president's presidential candidacy he appointed he shamed going into the former top auditor who was ousted by sisi after claiming that more than seventy five billion dollars was being lost in corruption and then in his speech and mounting his presidential candidacy accuse the army of mismanagement of egypt it was very brazen this is why i don't necessarily think that it's a surprise ok because also to remember those want to get in there it's not so much
1:23 pm
of a surprise if we can just talk in broad terms now how much of a threat are there and these candidates who throw their hat into the ring and then they are either dismissed barred or arrested they must be a threat to sisi in some shape or form. i think they are a threat remember this is a country where presidents don't leave by elections they either die in power of the nuts or they're either killed like i said it or they're ousted by a mass movement like hosni mubarak the problem is for egypt for cease right now is he struggling to find a puppet's candide it he's struggling to find somebody that when he wins ninety five ninety six percent of the votes everybody can say oh that's ok that's legitimate it is not a puppet candid it is not a puppet candide it they can call the command weight in the social sphere these other liberal candidates what they command puppets so you need somebody like one of these media personalities or one of these businessmen who are proceed who will put themselves up for a candidacy and then lose by a sweeping margin c.c.
1:24 pm
is struggling to find that candid it and that's why there's a need to imprison all of these people and what is interesting is there is a wall was a draft law issued i've got that got the paperwork here in two thousand and fourteen which basically to cut it because a long story short says that if no candidate is found and c.c. runs this election to its obvious conclusion all he has to get is five percent of the vote and he's won the presidency is he trying to actually push all these candidates away as this is another theory push all the candidates out the way so that you can win the election with just five percent. i think that's a last resort for c. c. c. c. does not want to be shown as the sole candidate in the presidential election remember despite his dictatorial brutal regime and the like he needs to keep up the show to europe to the us to the rest of the world that there is some semblance of a democracy even though he's going to win by ninety four ninety three percent if an election does pass he needs some sort of fake contest fate competition he desperately needs a puppet otherwise there he has no propaganda line to use so i think with c.c.
1:25 pm
that's a last resort that nor is there just in case that he's unable to find a puppet but i think that there are some candidates who are suitable to play as puppet candidates and we'll hear about them in the coming future the problem is however the likes of me and then come on support from the muslim brotherhood from segments of the army from segments of the why the liberal population because semi imam has exposed a willingness to tackle some of the corruption but what is really really interesting is this the fact that we have now have two former military officials on the rebel list ready to go against sisi suggest that the military is losing control the military is unable to keep its ranks in file with this is just this some sort of problem going on within the army we've never seen this before in egypt we've never seen such a public this agreement between military officials and i think sisi will be very concerned that the likes of sami and then a former chief of staff a man who's fortan all of egypt's wars where sisi has it was brazen enough to come out in public and challenge his will which is what does happen as we lead up to the

too bad at least at the moment but a complicated system of weather fronts making their way through and it's a perrier flow pressure this precious been named a storm georgina that's making its way across the british isles bringing some very lively conditions in the process further south with that complicated system of weather fronts making its way through is heading towards northern parts of france and this is the same in paris of the mind of the same again has burst its banks we are looking at something reminiscent of the kind of conditions that we saw here just a couple of years ago so at present we got the wetter weather just pushing across a good part of england and wales and that will just hate its way down across the breast peninsula continue pushing further south was thirteen self's in london twelve in paris so it's mild air that's coming through but it's still looking pretty miserable and by thursday see that wet weather makes its way across northern parts of france and exacerbating those floods that we have in paris the wet weather continues to extend its way down across the northern parts of spain and portugal

that same reason we wish to invite you all to take part in this new chapter in our history do invest in brazil and you shall not regret it. our correspondent. joins me now there was a keynote speech from the indian prime minister on tuesday we've already heard from the brazilian who else is on the podium on wednesday jonah. the big speakers today will be emmanuel macron and mater merkel from germany the german chancellor mr macron those are the young french president fresh from his stunning election victory last year with his brand new centrist party probably the rising star of the two he's seen as the reformist face not just of france but of the whole european union and he would indeed have had top billing here at davos this year had it not been for the late announcement of the arrival of donald trump and really so much of the politics here now being framed around this trump visit and merkel being seen as two leaders who will form a sort of european counterpoint if you like to trump's america first agenda they
1:32 pm
will stand up separately they're not speaking together but they will stand up generally for the strength and unity of the european union for reforms in the european union for a union overcoming its challenges via core values of democracy and free trade and really there is slowly not so slowly really a sort of empty trump. front growing here because as you say on tuesday there in india warned that protectionism was threatening globalization that was a good trump clearly and also on tuesday justin trudeau the can the canadian prime minister announced a brand new asia pacific trade pact eleven countries involved in that but not the united states of course as you just touched upon the fact that issues around protectionism are the big talking point whether it's nafta or whether it's the t p p when asia pacific these are all issues very dear to the heart of president trump so perhaps all eyes and ears on what he has to say when he arrives.
1:33 pm
and undoubtedly everything is sort of building to that point on friday when trump gives his closing address and as i say it's likely to be an address that moves very much in in the opposite direction to much of the things we'll be hearing in the days ahead he's likely to promote that america first agenda he's likely to promote that the economic policy of nationalism and protectionism indeed just this week donald trump and his administration announced tariffs on imports particularly from china and south korea fridges and solar panels and so on angering those two countries and it really is a perfect illustration of the sort of economic policy he may be hearing from promoting and that sort of protectionism of course anathema in a place like this among the leaders who be gathered there to watch him speak. with you and our correspondents there endeavors for the moment joe thank you. ways new leader is also in davos he's looking to use the world economic forum as
