air strikes and there is a province which the coalition says killed all those one hundred fighters loyal to the syrian government confliction blinded the area is supposed to prevent direct contact between u.s. and russian troops now the u.s. said the strikes would responds to what it called an unprovoked attack. on the headquarters of its ally the s.d.f. a force that opposes assad but russia which backs assad says the strikes are part of an effort by washington to control key economic assets in the region to prevent them from falling into the hands of the syrian government the us backed s.d.f. took hold of the strategically aboard oil fields north of the euphrates river is september or they had previously be deisel control forces loyal to the syrian government control the lead to the south wall for paired to good corresponded particle hades. i said at a briefing with secretary of defense jim that is he was off camera but on the record and he called what happened in syria

a quote perplexing situation and he said because for years the euphrates river has been a kind of do not cross line that if the u.s. or u.s. backed forces or russian or russian backed forces were going to cross it they talk about it before and he said that didn't happen this time he said u.s. forces were embedded along with the s.d.f. and they saw tanks and artillery start rolling in and say that one shell got within five hundred meters of the s.d.f. headquarters says that is when they picked up the phone they called their russian counterparts and he says he doesn't think that the group that moved in is actually controlled by russia he called this a great success story because in his words two great powers did not fight each other still the russian ambassador to the united nations was less than pleased i asked him to remember that the. syria illegally in fact. they were not invited. they claim with. the fight the international terrorism but we see that it goes beyond that. to confront those who really fight

the traditional terrorist with the glove with the syrians say is is giving secretary mabus didn't speculate on how many casualties were caused by the firing from u.s. jets and heavy artillery positions but he did say that they took out two of the incoming tanks and the heavy artillery positions the u.s. is calling this self-defense and warning that that happens again the elect again but also in syria for the fourth consecutive day bubs have been raiding the rebel held areas which were designated deescalation zones local media say government and russian air strikes have killed at least fifty seven people in eastern on the edge of damascus on state including children domestic they've escalated their attacks there and did it live province since a russian jet was shot down on saturday killing more than two hundred people in just four days jude reports of the rest of the violence.

by thursday the bombing raids in eastern hold ahead only intensified at least two dozen were carried out and activists say they see no end in sight to this horror from the sky. oh i was injured because of a plane. the night before fires in the town of modoc in the month the target of dozens of air strikes. that's despite it being in the northeastern province of a rebel held area and one of syria's so-called deescalation zones whose borders were agreed to by russia turkey and the on bombing raids carried out by russian and syrian forces have only intensified since a russian warplane was shot down by rebels on saturday when another blazes put out rescue efforts begin a new were seen as an escalation because isis has largely been defeated the.

zones were marked out around syria yes collation while the united states and russia were interested in destroying isis now that isis has largely been destroyed these deescalation zones have become up for grabs you see turkey rushing in to wrap up rain in the north united states say it's going to stay for the long haul in syria it owns twenty eight percent of syrian territory and the syrian regime is trying to grab the remaining rebel parts of syria including. which has been surrounded and bombarded last. eastern huta near syria's capital damascus is also still in the hands of rebels and like it is also under intense bombardment dozens of men women and children have been killed in the last four days. many residents believe pro-government forces are pushing for a decisive outcome to the war in syria while the united nations has called for a month long truce to evacuate the wounded that appeal hasn't made
3:07 am
a difference even for those accustomed to the carnage of the seemingly endless conflict this most recent bombardment has been terrifying. now the united nations security council has been discussing humanitarian concerns in syria the french ambassador says the situation is only worsening despite the creation of so-called deescalation zones. in theory we are now back to the darkest period of this conflict with the highest death toll among civilians over the last year. and as we speak the situation is deteriorating by the day in and. in particular. the syrian regime keeps bombing and beseeching its own population.
3:08 am
ease a new alipore in the making. meanwhile russia has rejected a u.n. proposal for a one month polls in ground fighting and strikes we would like to see a cease fire the end the war in syria would put the terrorists not sure they're in the government would they use perl use who has put them out. well to the u.s. where the senate and the house of representatives are both set to vote on the budget deal to avert a fast approaching government shutdown though it's facing stiff resistance in both republicans and democratic terms speaker paul ryan says he believes there will be in the votes to pass the bipartisan agreement which was struck in the senate the bill is expected to pass there with relative ease but it does face a tougher test in the house where it must also be approved mystical closer look at what this all means while a two year deal seeks to lift spending caps on both defense and domestic programs raising government investments by three hundred billion dollars it's
3:09 am
a high priority for republican defense hawks in congress the bill proposes to raise military budgets by one hundred sixty billion dollars there's also a big boosted domestic for digg covering areas such as health care education did viral mental programs so that satisfies many democrats for now but not all of them are happy democratic leader nancy pelosi says it does address immigration she wants a b.d.'s legislation that protects young immigrants who add to the u.s. illegally as children there's also opposition from republicans very conservative budget hawks have been very good by the significant spare dick hike proposed well our correspondent kristen saluki is following events in washington d.c. we wait with bated breath really about what the chances are of a deal tonight as the clock is ticking away. it sure is we're now five hours away from that deadline when the government will shut down and
3:10 am
a deal is looking increasingly in doubt about an hour ago senate leadership attempted to call a vote on this massive spending package that they've proposed but procedural delays are stalling this now bear with me here of course the senate has to vote on the package in the house has to vote on the package and then the president has to sign it before they can even take it to a vote in the senate all senators have to agree to call that vote and one senator who wants an amendment rand paul wants an amendment considered for this spending package and he's refusing to let this go to a vote and he's been speaking on the floor of the senate for the last hour about his concerns so we're hearing now that republican leadership are preparing some sort of a stopgap measure should this go into the wee hours of the morning which paul has promised to do because he's concerned about this the leadership says if we let a vote happen on your amendment there's a number of other lawmakers are going to want to propose their amendments and you
3:11 am
know we need to go we need to act now so there's pressure but again increasing doubts and then on the house side. they have said that they believe that the leadership has said that they believe they have enough votes just like in the senate they've said they believe they have enough votes if it ever gets to the vote . but nothing is clear there's a lot of pressure on lawmakers right now from activists in their base on various issues so i think nothing is certain at this point and as i say increasingly in doubt that they're going to make that twelve o'clock deadline. it can't be of the size of the friday the concern. is whether they be republican or democrat about this deal because their concerns are very different to that you say they range from military spending into sort of social welfare education to immigration. well for republicans the main concern is the cost of this package a three hundred billion dollar increase over two years that is believed to send the
3:12 am
deficit over a trillion dollars and that's a lot of money in order to get this deal they had to put a lot of things into the package a little bit of something for everyone and that cost a lot of money frankly and when you have conservative republicans who were elected on reducing the debt seeing such a huge increase combined with the tax cuts which is which were passed recently which are also adding to this deficit it's a hard sell for them if they have to go back and face their constituents and if they're up for reelection on the democratic side it's the immigration issue nancy pelosi the leader of the house has said she won't speak she won't vote for this because it does not include a deal to protect children who are brought to the united states undocumented for them to stay in the country and she's not pressuring the rest of her party to vote the way she is and her leadership role but she says she's not going to vote for it
3:13 am
so i think. a lot of democrats are facing that pressure as well from their constituents at home who want to see something for these. undocumented who came here by through no fault of their own well of course i will keep all events in washington d.c. with you kristen as the clock ticks away krasinski me this. while stocks have been plunging on wall street for the fifth time in six days and are now trading ten percent below all time highs set on january the twenty sixth of those days the dow jones fell by more than one thousand points after large gains in the first weeks of twenty eight they started dropping a week ago after the u.s. labor department said workers' salaries rose at a faster rate in january while that's good for the economy investors worried her wages will eat away at the corporate profits a problem to the federal reserve to raise interest rates first gabriel is under as more. make no mistake about it this was
3:14 am
a huge stocks plunge the big question is what's causing it now there are a whole host of reasons but most economists and traders are pointing to three key things number one concerns over rising deficit spending the federal budget that's being negotiated right now in washington is expected to add at least three hundred billion dollars in deficit spending over the next two years add that with one point five trillion in deficit spending for the new text overhaul plan that trump and the republicans pushed through late last year and you're seeing these huge amounts of money that is added to the deficit and that is really concerning wall street the second reason is inflationary concern and rising interest rates and the third being political uncertainty in washington with the trump administration's continued fights public battles with the f.b.i. and the continuing russia investigation leaving the markets uncertain about the
3:15 am
political future of the administration and how they're going to navigate all of this markets don't like any uncertainty and they don't like political uncertainty either well still ahead. and that's right the lawsuit reopens wins for the family of a palestinian killed in clashes three years ago. and a show of full spoke low key by usual standards will quiz military parade only evoke the south's olympics. from the clear blue sky of the dome home. to the fresh fruits and breeze in the city. how the weather remains slushy dry across central and southern parts of china a little bit more clout than we have seen a recently having said that i would towards the southwest and maybe into that southeast and cold winds coming in from
