finally resigned on wednesday a governing a.n.c. party demanded he step aside of corruption allegations the president spoke in parliament after he was elected as leader he pledged to work with the opposition for the good of the country. seeks to work with all political parties. started all free. well started off with wanting to have a meeting with the leaders of all political parties so that we can try and find a way of working together and i'm heartened by some of the sentiments expressed here about working together which i will want to touch on. and i will do all this as

a servant of our people because i do believe that when one is elected in this type of position you basically become a servant of the people of south africa and all seek to execute that task with humility faithfulness and with dignity as well let's go live now to rob matheson he's in johannesburg for us so rob tell us more about what around oppose his priorities will now be. well his priority was really summed up in the clip that you just heard which was his intention to try to bring together all the opposition parties to to try to move forward from the jacob zuma administration and the situation in the allegations of surrounded the rule of jacob zuma but at that point when he made that speech in the

national assembly just a few hours ago we i think saw the first hurdle that he is going to have to cross as he tries to move things forward the opposition parties were standing up to him saying that they welcome the fact that he has had been given his appointment but they objected to the fact that the intention seemed to be to put to paint them as the problem when in fact the opposition party had been telling the a.n.c. and several. during his ten years as deputy to dig observe about the allegations surrounding jacob zuma and the administration of jacob zuma and they have done nothing they opposition said that they have put forward motions to try to get zuma charges brought against zuma to get debates held and that each stage the a.n.c. had blocked those so he's really facing a very significant problem in trying to hold together the opposition and also the

a.n.c. it's well because the n c has been badly fractured by the allegations that have surrounded the zuma administration we have to point out that the pressure that the a.n.c. was putting on jacob zuma to resign was not because they say they believe that he is guilty of those allegations they simply say that the allegations have been some become so great that they were affecting the party's. potential when it comes to the general election which is going to be held in twenty nineteen and they want to get all of that out of the way so that they could prepare well in advance to get back on track for those election. in the twenty nineteen other questions already being asked about is actually over promising is there a suggestion that he is very open to having talks with the opposition parties but they are going to demand something in return and what is it that he can actually give them and not compromise themselves if he is determined to be seen as fair and

transparent in the way that these zuma ministration was not seen but also as i say he has to hold together a very fractured a.n.c. and deals will have to be done compromises will have to be made within the party as well to try to hold that together in the run up to the general election next year and mention that about getting the a.n.c. back on track robyn him importance of trying to do that ahead of crucial elections in a year's time. zuma really dragged it out he has finally resigned in terms of public perception how much damage has been done to the party just from that. i think there's no there's no question just from the people that i've been speaking to here since i arrived in johannesburg and certainly looking at the newspapers and in the radio and t.v. coverage there is a very strong perception that the a.n.c. has been very badly damaged by jacob zuma the a.n.c.

itself no one has openly said that it has been badly damaged by the allegations that have been surrounding the zuma administration we should keep repeating of course that these are allegations nothing against jacob zuma orders administration has yet to be improved in a court of law and part of the process as you rightly say is that this whole thing has been dragged out it's part of a very long ongoing legal process the a.n.c. felt that they had to do something to try to draw a line under the zuma administration to stop these allegations creating more harm to the a.n.c. in the run up to the election than they were going to do had the allowed him to stay for say even an extra three months which he had wanted to do in the week so the a.n.c. decided to cut effectively cut the ties from with jacob zuma and try to move forward but in terms of the perception of the party itself you've got to remember this is the party the brought liberation to south africa this is the party the

an attack like this we know from the f.b.i. we just heard of last few moments in a press conference that a you tube user reported a comment from nicholas cruz that said i'm going to grow up and be a professional school shooter that was in fact investigated by the f.b.i. so clearly the authorities knew of this individual and nothing seems to have happened we've also got e-mails from teachers at the school who were terrified of this young man who used to be at the school before he was expelled and while he was at the school he was not allowed to carry a backpack in there but yet somehow was legally allowed to buy an a r fifteen assault rifle we know that he was a loner we know that his friends faded away as his behavior became more erratic as he began to post pictures of himself with weapons pictures of dead animals so all the warning signs were there but this is not an unprecedented case in the mass shootings in this country carried out by individuals with similar profiles to nicholas cruz it seems to be

a patent it happened at virginia tech where the student killed more than thirty people there in what was at the time the largest mass shooting in u.s. history had himself a history of mental illness and yet he was still allowed to buy and possess weapons and large amounts of ammunition that's what happened in this case it continues to happen in this country we've already had president trump tweeting out that this was a disturbed individual one reply from one student has gone viral which says we don't need your prayers we don't need your condolences we need congress to do something about gun control that is not likely to happen in this case it hasn't happened any other time before particularly after the sandy hook shooting in connecticut in which twenty children who were very very young was shot and killed by exactly the same weapon there is a mounting pressure on republicans to take a. a lot of money from the national rifle association to sit down and do something about this governor rick scott spoke in the last few moments he was talking again about not letting people with mental illness get hold of guns but once again no

fact that he didn't seem to adapt to it and this is one role that the american public expects from their president certainly the president sticking to the teleprompter there in his prepared remarks saying that his entire administration is there for a grieving public to ease their pain the belief of this is ministration no child or teacher should feel unsafe in an american school having said that again the approach in terms of trying to make children safer is very much different this belief that we heard not just from the president earlier from the attorney general jeff sessions the top lawyer in the united states head of the justice department that the way that this administration will pursue this is with this intersection of mental health and criminality the president saying in fact that this is going to be a top priority that he will be working in his administration with local law enforcement leaders as well as in the state of florida to try and address this the

belief that this is the way to make american safer when it comes to gun violence which is so prolific in the united states. and just briefly we know that you're saying this administration is going to take a different approach in terms of the way gun violence interacts with mental health issues but what about gun control and stricter legislation we'd like to him much on that in the coming weeks or months. there's certainly going to be that effort and we've seen that already by some democratic lawmakers but you have to remember the very powerful national rifle association it receives millions in the united states to lobby lawmakers to keep gun control from being put in place there have been repeated efforts in the u.s. congress to bring about stricter gun laws but right now we have a republican president we have two chambers in the u.s. congress controlled by republicans they're largely not receptive to seeing any sort
