as part of genocide the listening post provides a critical counterpoint challenging mainstream media narrative at this time on al-jazeera. al-jazeera. where every. the financial legibly conducted what they called information warfare against the united states several russians are charged with meddling in the twenty sixteen u.s. election barking and a major development in the f.b.i. investigation.

the whole robin you're watching out is there a live my headquarters here in doha also coming up a state of emergency is declared in ethiopia after the prime minister's sudden resignation. and u.s. school shooting victims are laid to rest repercussions grow over the failure to investigate a tip off before the attack plus. politics race and superheroes why marvel's latest comic book movie is being hailed as a cultural milestone. to out is that now the u.s. department of justice has outlined its strongest allegation yet of russian meddling in the twenty sixteen presidential election length criminal charges against thirteen russian nationals and three companies most worked at the internet research
3:02 am
agency nicknamed the troll factory however prominent businessman with close ties to putin was also charged the indictment says that from twenty fourteen russians used thousands of fake social media accounts to influence public debate ahead of the election and staged rallies in support of donald trump other charges stem from the investigation by special counsel robert muller who's been assessing whether the truck campaign colluded with russia and the white house says that the indictment show that the trim campaign had nothing to do with the russian battling the president himself took to twitter. saying that russia started that anti us campaign in twenty fourteen long before he announced that he would run for president he goes on to say that the results of the election were not impacted the trump campaign did nothing wrong no collusion michaela is our correspondent following all of these events and developments from our bureau in washington d.c.
3:03 am
mike it's really a very detailed document that once again raises more questions about how intricate the alleged russian involvement in the election walls is that is more than thirty pages of tightly condensed detail about the operations of the individuals and the russian organizations the charges are specifically conspiracy to defraud the united states and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud the members of the organization allegedly stole american identities they pass themselves off as americans to take part in social media debates to organize rallies all sorts of levels the indictment finding that the aim apparently was to promote donald trump at the expense of competitors within the campaign both democrat and republican the attorney general also saying though that there is no evidence presented within the indictment that the operation had any effect on the
3:04 am
outcome of the election and also saying that there's no involvement proven of any american nationals that those who were involved with the russian group did so and knowingly this is what the attorney general had to say this indictment serves as a reminder that people are not always who they appear to be on the. internet and alleges that the russian conspirators want to promote discord in the united states and undermine public confidence in democracy we must not allow them to succeed. the department of justice will continue to work. with other law enforcement intelligence agencies and with the congress to defend our nation against similar current and future efforts mike kim how does this particular statement made by the deputy attorney general sort of fit into the much larger investigation when we have
3:05 am
names like paul butler for water and michael flynn being bandied around and documents. well that's a question because this is just perhaps the beginning of this investigation as you say there have been indictments against some u.s. citizens members of former members of president trump's campaign this is all going to be folded in together the what one thing we have seen in this particular indictment is the detail that miller's team have gone to to actually establish every part of the process so in the weeks months ahead we're going to hear more revelations no doubt and certainly president trump himself while stating there is no collusion proven that was indeed in the indictment but there is no attempt in the indictment to prove any form of collusion at this particular stage this investigation is going to go on and importantly now that the indictments being made any attempts to undercut or even hold robert miller's investigation which had been
3:06 am
the case before. and so clearly robert mueller is going to go ahead clearly they are going to be more details perhaps involving american nationals rather than russian nationals in the weeks and months ahead well for the moment but we'll leave it there thank you. so what all the russians saying in response we said particle going to the embassy in washington d.c. . so far we haven't heard anything just yet from any russian officials who work here at the embassy in washington d.c. but we are hearing perhaps appropriately on facebook from a spokesperson for the russian foreign ministry calling these indictments absurd saying that thirteen people couldn't possibly have impacted the u.s. elections talking about the billions that the u.s. spends on intelligence encounter intelligence and said this is absurd yes with a question mark this will probably not help what is already pretty low point in the russian u.s. relationship the president president donald trump saying that russia did interfere
3:07 am
but that it had nothing to do with him it didn't impact the election he so far has been really unwilling to do anything to punish russia for what many people here in washington say was blatant interference in the presidential election. south africa's new president has pledged a new tone for the country in his first state of the nation address civil room opposable sworn in on thursday after the resignation of his predecessor jacob zuma the former union leader and businessman promised to unite the country and put the economy back on track but opposition parties say his plans a thin detail for me to miller reports from cape town with no threat of protests and less security this state of the nation address was a departure from recent years with demonstrations had become routine this was an opportunity for president settled. to outline the government's goals for the coming yeah and set the tone of the new administration much of the speech focused on

corruption in government for me to melissa al-jazeera cape town. search for emergency has been declared in ethiopia a day after the unexpected resignation of the prime minister and the sun the country's seen a wave of protests fueled at least in part by ethnic divisions barco reports. the streets of ethiopia's capital addis ababa appear calm but the country's political landscape is slipping deeper into crisis. of friday ethiopia's ruling coalition decided to impose emergency rule to stem a recent wave of anti-government protests there is no indication of how long the measures will be in place the announcement comes a day after the sudden resignation of prime minister haile mariam to sell a new leader of ethiopia since two thousand and twelve he said he was stepping down in a bid to smooth reforms. the country's been troubled by years of unrest by ethnic groups

to quell protests stemming from ethnic groups that feel under represented. now the head of the f.b.i. is facing calls to resign after the agency admitted that it failed to follow up on a tip about the florida high school shooter before wednesday's attack the f.b.i. says a person close to nicholas cruz called them early in january to report concerns that he may kill people but nothing was done in response florida governor rick scott says it's an unacceptable failure nineteen year old cruz has been charged with murdering seventeen people in the shooting spree while i did gallagher is live in parkland north of miami where the attack happened we'll talk about the f.b.i. issue in a moment but the president has finally arrived in florida been meeting. well this was
3:17 am
a very unusual visit in that it wasn't announced to the public it was what you might call a surprise visit we know at the moment is that broward hospital the hospital that was close to the school that took in so many of those victims he's meeting with first responders medical staff and presumably he will be talking to some of the people still recovering inside the hospital after that he will go to the broward county's sheriff's office where he will again talk to law enforcement officials in the last few moments he's already making some public comments about what a great job the first responders have done but key to all this he's not here he's not in a place like this where i'm speaking quietly because people are coming to pay their respects he hasn't mentioned anything about guns it's perhaps not surprising because i think people here wouldn't really generally welcome the president there is a great deal of anger here at the inaction in washington d.c. over even talking about gun control i haven't found anyone over the past few days talking to parents and students and that don't want to see some kind of change that don't want to see somebody with such

a troubled background and so young able to buy an assault rifle and walk into a school and did what he did on wednesday so i don't know what president trump's plans are after friday evening but at the moment he is visiting with mostly first responders and law enforcement officials of course sunday that anger and heartbreak you know you're talking about as well way you are is only exacerbated by the families experiencing what they are with this news about this f.b.i. failing to be able to communicate within their own agency about this man. you know this is an astonishing admission by the f.b.i. that on january the fifth somebody close to christopher nicholas cruz called the f.b.i. this wasn't a vague tip off this was a very specific tip off they said that this was a young man who had erratic behavior who owned a weapon and who in fact had the desire to walk into a school and carry out
3:19 am
a shooting that message from the local federal agents wasn't passed to the f.b.i. office in miami so it wasn't acted upon that is something that's going to reverberate within the f.b.i. for months and weeks to come we've already got the governor of florida rick scott calling for the head of the f.b.i. his resignation it is a very basic error for a body that is set up a century to protect the american people and really i think if you spoke to people here they would say would have said if that tip off had gone through and been acted on probably this might not have happened at the moment here i have to say people aren't focusing on those kinds of issues whether the president is here or whether the f.b.i. made a major basic mistake what they're doing is turning up to memorials like this and we've been seeing scenes like this all day it's getting busier and busier as the night goes on it's very quiet it's very subdued it's a very sad moment and what people here are trying to do is remember those that lost their lives but again there is an anger that no one wants to ever see anything happen like this again they want to see action on gun control and at the moment

diffuse the tensions but experience diplomats were putting the blame squarely on president trump. we see a more assertive russia but we. are we just pointed out but the same time for nato it is important to avoid a new cold war avoid a prevent the new arms race and therefore we continue to work for dialogue with russia i'm very concerned that president trump has not been a strong leader for nato he's the first american president since my nine hundred forty nine to be openly ambivalent about article five an attack on one of us is an attack on all he's been openly competitive with the european union so we're looking at a major sea change in the least the rhetoric of the american president. the secretary general of united nations took to the stage to warn that the middle east was now what he called and authentically white mind what i think is changed clearly is that today the whole global middle east became a mess and became a mess with
