where ever you. what makes this moment this era we're living through so unique this is really an attack on itself is a lot of misunderstanding a distortion isn't of what free speech is supposed to be about the context is hugely important level what to publish if you have a duty to be offensive or provoke the target of it as people did setting the stage for a serious debate. up front at this time on al-jazeera. at least a dozen children who'd taken shelter in a school in syria's eastern guta a killed during government test rides.
5:01 pm
hello again i'm a fiend an issue with al jazeera live from doha also coming up former french president nicolas sarkozy is in custody he's being detained by police in an investigation into alleged illegal campaign funding. and it's time to get out of town for russian diplomats expelled in london the midnight deadline approaches. this is a john the world's last mail nor them why driving it is just i couldn't care. less asking syria's eastern ghouta where the un is now calling for urgent access both to civilians who fled the own place as well as those who remain trapped inside the u.n. says many of the fifty thousand people who've managed to get out in recent days a suffering from potentially fatal illnesses. and that's thirty two civilians were

military operations to force a surrender or pressure back to the negotiating table was. some of the new doctrine the shelling is targeting civilians and it hasn't stopped in the duma this is an airstrike right now as you can see as plain as bombarding residential areas from bombardments haven't stopped since yesterday until this very moment. tens of thousands of civilians are trapped in eastern hooter's largest population center cynthia salt was launched more than a month ago syrian government forces and their allies have advanced deep inside the rebel controlled area outside damascus splitting it into three pockets aid managed to enter to my joy in recent weeks but one of the warehouses was hit in monday's attacks humanitarian agencies said the supplies that were delivered were far from enough but they were desperately needed by a population that has been under tight siege for months that brings. ceasefire in

tomorrow also allowed dozens of wounded and sick people to be evacuated to hospitals the delivery of aid the evacuation of medical cases and a ceasefire are what the rebel factions are demanding but it's not clear how much bargaining power they have they have been weakened after losing a lot of territory the pro-government alliance has the upper hand on the ground. and its aim since the start of the bombing campaign is to recapture eastern and and the presence of the opposition in the area. that the syrian army is now clearing and it's from terrorists and is removing all the explosive devices and after that we went into our entire mall all the way until we reach job or until every piece of land in eastern water is liberated. the battle has caused immense human suffering the united nations is warning of a further deepening of the crisis it says more than forty five thousand people have been displaced seventy percent of them women and children and they along with

hundreds of thousands of others trapped in the rubble pockets face what the united nations calls a catastrophic situation senator beirut the u.n. says there are about one hundred thousand people who are trapped inside the african district that's in the northwest of syria and half of them and children turkey has taken control of the city of afrin after battling kurdish fighters the two months has been heavily criticised by the u.s. and the syrian government which calls for the an occupation and wants turkey to withdraw he's refused saying it will expand operations to other kurdish help taiwan's in syria including each. the saudi arabia's crown prince is due to meet u.s. president donald trump in the white house shortly as part of his three week tour across america thirty two year old mohammed bin solomon is hoping to remake the kingdom's image in the eyes of americans the iran nuclear deal and the saudi

military campaign in yemen are expected to be discussed during his talks with president trump been sound man recently told u.s. media that saudi arabia would make a nuclear bomb if iran acquired other fisher is our correspondent live now in washington d.c. so first up then for the crown prince is a meeting with president trump. and that's the big meeting that he's going to have cheering his three week visit to the united states or spend a week here in washington meeting various members of the congress and senate but the oval office meeting is certainly the big one it's the second time in a year that he's been here you see exactly a year ago in march twenty seven thousand there's a lot to talk about there is the growing influence of iran donald trump has obviously been very critical of that and also talked about the iran nuclear deal there's the ongoing battle in yemen and i don't know if you can hear but there's a protest just across the street from the white house at the moment talking specifically about yemen the white house says that they will ask the saudis to open
5:07 pm
up the ports to allow it to come in there is the talk as well of sodium developing a domestic nuclear power program which needs american help as well all of these things to be discussed and as you see this is all about trying to remake the image of saudi arabia and the united states and that is a bit of a time for mohammed bin selman because according to a paul that was out in february fifty five percent of americans don't trust sodium revere and that is more than people don't trust cuba and don't trust china so you can see that in these three weeks when he's due to go to new york to boston to hoost in california and also to seattle he's got a lot of work to do and when it comes to this seemingly intractable gulf crisis what do we expect what kind of role can we expect president trump to take because obviously he's fluctuated hasn't he from being on one side to the other in this
5:08 pm
time of disconnect. that's right and there were mixed messages as well one coming from the president when he was very critical of qatar and the other from rex tillerson who was the secretary of state saying look there has to be discussions there are faults on both sides donald trump even suggested that it could be how to speak a camp david meeting between all the parties and he would quite happily cheer that to try and bring our own some sort of solution in the g.c.c. crisis there was a briefing late on monday with a senior white house official he was asked specifically by al-jazeera whether or not there would be some talks on the g.c.c. and the position though seems to have changed whether saying look this is really up to the parties that are involved to get around the table to discuss this and sort it out there was talk that he would hope that the saudis and others would attend the next g.c.c. meeting you remember the last one in kuwait the immoralities and the saudis among others sent fairly minor figures certainly not the big names that we would normally
5:09 pm
expect at such a gathering and so the americans don't seem to want to get involved in this argument between friends and allies instead they're saying it is really up to the arabs in the g.c.c. to sort this out for themselves an official live in washington thank you very much now we've got some breaking news coming out of the u.s. and for this we're going to get to another of our correspondents who's in washington this room has now all the news of a high school shooting in southern maryland and there are reports of injuries roseville as our correspondent rolls what more do we know. well this is what we know at this hour martine this happened at a public high school called great mill senior high school in mary's county maryland it's on the very southern portion of the state near the naval air station patuxent river where they test the f. thirty five fighter jet this is a school of about sixteen hundred students
5:10 pm
a few days ago they had participated in the walk out to march one month since students were shot and killed at marjorie stoneham douglas high school in florida they were getting ready for this coming weekend protest march on the national mall here in washington according to authorities at least two possibly three people have been injured we don't know whether they are adults meaning faculty and staff or students we don't know whether the person the alleged shooter is one of those who was injured in the shooting but at least two people possibly three have been taken to a local hospital for treatment as you might expect martin the high school is on lockdown as a nearby private high school parents are being told that their children are going to be evacuated from great mills and taken to another high school so that the parents can pick up their children and take them home obviously we don't know who is
5:11 pm
responding the shooting what sort of weapon was being used what the motive was and whether or not anyone has been arrested in this case it's still happening this all just started just about an hour and ten minutes ago and this of course is a start of the school day it's just gone ten ten am in d.c. kids would have been turning out for class and you say that we have no idea as to who the perpetrator is but you say that the sister situation is still alive. that's right the situation is still alive authorities are saying that it is what they say contained which is they believe that they have in custody or have detained whoever is responsible for this attack it's pretty a quick decision to make that given a campus of sixteen hundred students but it's a little after nine am here i'm sorry after ten am here kids were just getting to their first classes when the reports started coming in at least one student told
5:12 pm
the baltimore sun that he did hear gunfire and that as he was running to safety he saw a girl of another student fall to the ground we don't know who that young woman was but there is at least one eyewitness to what happened at this high school great mills on tuesday and drawls just to recap then for us because clearly this is a developing story and as we look at the life the life picture from the scene we can see lots and lots of of police cars with flashing lights said just to recap what is the casualty count as far as where of where as far as we are aware two possibly three people we've gotten conflicting numbers from various law enforcement agencies you have the local sheriff's department but you also have the f.b.i. the alcohol tobacco and firearms bureau all of these agencies have reported to the scene so there's a bit of
5:13 pm
a discrepancy in the casualty figure but so far no one from an authoritative standpoint has said that anyone has died because of this shooting a great mills high school but nonetheless another high school shooting in the united states for novels thank you very much roslyn jones and a correspondent in d.c. . now the seven day deadline for twenty three russian diplomats to leave britain is usually far at midnight on tuesday the british prime minister to resign may ordered them out of the russian embassy in london after the pointing a former spy sergei scriptural and his daughter with a nerve agent and in response british diplomats they were also ordered out of russia in retaliation let's go live to ban a beef and it's he's our correspondent in london today and so those diplomats have now started telling. yes that's right martin there were many buses and vans full of people leaving the russian embassy in
5:14 pm
notting hill gate in west london earlier today and there were waves and there were tears there was a short address inside the embassy by the russian ambassador they would no doubt argue that their diplomatic careers here in london and their family lives here in london have been cruelly an unnecessarily disrupted by the british government the british government believes that it has dealt a severe blow to the russian embassies capacity to spy on this country certainly seeing them leave as very tangible sign of how the souls bre poisoning episode has brought relations between britain and russia to a new low and meanwhile the international inspectors are still in the u.k. taking samples beginning their analysis of the substance used. to yes i mean the it's the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons
5:15 pm
they're adamant that they do not comment on operational matters excuse me so i don't think we can expect much of a running commentary from them in the coming days we believe it will take about two weeks before we get any results from them the british police say that the. their investigation carries on. excuse me. they've invested they've spoken to some four hundred witnesses and they say that their investigation looking forward really is again looking at weeks possibly months so this is a slow moving criminal investigation on the behalf of the british police and also a slope moving forensic chemical investigation by the opi c.w. at the same time all right bonamy thank you very much. the whole spawn of life in london. at al jazeera hamas rejects palestinian president mahmoud abbas's accusation that it was behind last week's attack on the prime minister. and they

suburbs of paris when i was back in twenty twelve that a french investigative news website actually published documents which suggested that the former president nicolas sarkozy had received illegal campaign funding for his two thousand and seven presidential campaign off to the last a year later french police want investigations in the case never since my just basically sitting trying to gather evidence and information and these allegations of really overshadowed nicolas sarkozy's political career in front didn't win. sixteen he was running for the presidency for a third time and that beard was in some ways more scuppered by the fact that a lebanese french businessman came out and said that he himself would carry five million dollars worth of cash in suitcases from tripoli's or paris and handed that money to one of nicolas sarkozy's closest sade's well over the years sarkozy has always denied any links or received denied that he's ever received any illegal
5:21 pm
funds from libya has always said that he's been the target of his opponents and critics it's been a political smear campaign but now that he has retired from politics it's only going to be a lot harder to use that as his line of defense that china's president has given what's being seen as his strongest warning yet to try one and the other separatists xi jinping says they are doomed to fail and they'll be punished by history he was speaking at the end of a two week long national people's congress president she didn't mention taiwan by name but donald trump calls chinese anger recently by encouraging direct meetings between the taiwanese and u.s. government. have us again denying all during last week's attack on the palestinian prime minister in gaza in a speech in ramallah president blamed his political rivals for the roadside explosion rami have dollar wasn't hurt but several guards. the condition

with her knee we offer well wishes and safety to our brother. the prime minister and magic father of the head of intelligence and the rest of our brothers from the security detail that went through this despicable incident that was done by hamas in the gaza strip. we call on our egypt brothers to intervene immediately in order to stop this criminal policy against the people of palestine and the palestinian cause and these policies prepare the environment for the arrival of the so-called deal of the century that will separate the west bank from gaza and we call for the creation of a large national front to reject these decisions and allow the reconstruction of the palestinian homeland more from our correspondent harder abdel-hamid. president mahmoud abbas was blunt and sounded quite angry he squarely put the blame on how much when it comes to the attack on the convoy of prime minister hamdullah last
5:23 pm
week in gaza he went as far as saying did there was no need for an investigation because hamas knew exactly who was behind this attack and then we talked about taking measures against the hamas leadership in gaza without giving any further details but you have to bear in mind that measures are already in place for example the salary of the civil servants have been cut and they have been receiving this reduced wage for several months already now hamas on its side seems to not want to escalate this this divide between the two sides it warned that such a divide would actually play right into the hands of israel and the trump administration at a time when already jerusalem has been declared a capital by the american administration and there is talk about how trump describes it the deal of the century certainly how messed warning of that now president abbas as i said seemed very angry but he is coming also under regional
5:24 pm
pressure from what we understand from our conversations with palestinian senior officials held a very long phone conversation last night with egyptian president of the fatah had sisi and during that conversation president sisi would have put pressure on how best to hold off from taking any further steps certainly this divide between hamas and fatah has crippled the palestinians for more than a decade now ever since the takeover of gaz that back in two thousand and seven national reconciliation has been elusive at best they had reached several agreements in the past for example in mecca in cairo and in doha but underground nothing has changed now that has always played right into the hand of the israeli's prime minister netanyahu saying more than. ones who i am i supposed to negotiate with the palestinians are not united as i said national

reconciliation extremely difficult this latest round has been going on for several months that there was hope that it would reach some breakthrough but certainly after the events of this past week and the harsh words we heard from both sides over the past few hours it seems that national reconciliation now has they can another setback amnesty international has accused of breaking international law by selling weapons to saudi arabia and the u.a.e. and failing to ensure that those weapons they use legally both gulf states have been accused of committing war crimes during the conflict in yemen the french foreign ministry has dismissed amnesties concerns into as tire reports. searching for what little is left this house was destroyed in an airstrike by the saudi led coalition the yemeni capital sana'a has been targeted repeatedly since the conflict began nearly three years ago killing more than ten thousand yemenis displacing millions and threatening famine and what the u.n.

terrorism abroad. and since twenty twelve the i.r.g.c. has spent more than sixteen billion dollars of iran's wealth to prop up the assad regime and support terrorists in syria iraq and yemen he goes on to say it employs propaganda and censorship to hide the fact the iranian regime plunders iran's wealth and abuses its people and to hide the truth around ruthless oppressor and citizens' rights to free assembly access to information and equal opportunity. is our correspondent in tehran. in his first nora's address u.s. president donald trump accused iran's revolutionary guard corps of plundering the country's wealth and to run civilian government of suppressing the civil rights of their own people at times like this it's difficult not to compare trunk to his predecessor barack obama in his first speech in two thousand and nine obama used

the opportunity to reach out directly to the iranian people in a video message from the white house trump's address was simply a written statement barack obama used the opportunity to extend an olive branch to iran's leaders and eventually open the road to dialogue and the two thousand and fifteen nuclear deal and ever since trump has taken over the white house he has done everything in his power to try and dismantle that deal obama spoke to the iranian people and said they had more in common with americans that there were more similarities between them than differences but ever since trump has taken over the us presidency iranians say his policies have made them feel attacked and excluded on the international stage so as a ronnie and celebrate their new year amid so much uncertainty essentially created by the trump white house any kind words that were in his nora's address are likely to be seen here as disingenuous. a u.s. bomb disposal experts are currently investigating the latest explosion in texas one
