right senator. what makes this moment. so unique this is really an attack on itself is a lot of misunderstanding a distortion of what free speech is supposed to be about the context it's hugely important. to be civil for all it's all about. this stage for a serious debate up front at this time on al-jazeera. this is al jazeera and live from studio fourteen here at al-jazeera headquarters in doha i'm come on santa maria welcome to the newsgroup
6:01 pm
a truce of sorts in eastern crudes. syrian government bombardments a group of rebels has agreed to a cease fire and one possibly on life some fighters have already surrendered the only thing that we wonder is this not definitively a losing battle for the anti us it's great another white house shakeup. outs. john bolton is in as national security adviser but is the appointment of someone who has previously advocated military action against north korea and iraq affect america's foreign policy now and pull back a warning for the u.s. off the donald trump it's just sometimes on chinese goods beijing says it doesn't want to trade war but isn't scared to engage in what we're going to look at exactly what is a trifle what it means for the global economy and one. and only a hearty female students in southern india are protesting with watermelons that's treating quite a buzz online we'll tell you what's behind the outrage you can access the hash tag
6:02 pm
. look at the news grid live on air and streaming online through you tube facebook live and around as a result come all the stories to come but we start with a developing situation in the southwest of france which actually seems to have come to an end in the past hour a gunman stormed into a grocery store taking several people hostage he reportedly was claiming allegiance to isolate and see large numbers of police who are on the scene there they have shot and killed the gunman but not before he killed three people the french president a man who micron not in france at the moment actually in brussels but did address the media about the incident says it was a terror attack it too but the cocky decision on the feed unitech least everything leads us to believe that indeed it's a to attack the police intervened in a very coordinated manner after what was first an attack against officers please
6:03 pm
allow me to express my utmost support to the police officers who responded. just to put it on the map for you very quickly will zoom in here it is type is the very small town there in the caucus on region in the south of france just a very very small place there i believe only about five thousand people or so live there now we've got paul brennan who is in paris has been live on air on al jazeera for the last three hours i'd say paul covering this one well you tell us exactly how it's played out. yeah it started this morning came out with reports that a drive by shooting at taken place targeting police offices that seemed serious enough but what developed was something far more big and far more ominous it moved the action to super super markets in the town of now the drive by shooting aiming at the police officers was a caucus on travel about eight kilometers away it was clear that the same gunman had been involved in both incidents and the hostage situation developed at the
6:04 pm
supermarket but during the course of the investigation as people as the police started tackling the the incident and working out what exactly had happened there it was realized there was a third incident as well before the drive by shooting that the drive by shooting had been the result of a carjacking where one person had been killed and another man grievously wounded the gunman had taken the white opal gone to the four police officers were jogging down the street in caucus on shot at them and then gone to the supermarket there was then a standoff a police officer john dom swapped himself for some civilian hostages went into the supermarket he was basically the only person there with the gunmen opened a mobile telephone line to the outside world and it was by using the communication that they could him being able to listen in but the order was made that the decision was made on the timing of the operation to bring the hostage situation to a close that gendarme has been praised by the authorities for extreme bravery in
6:05 pm
the attention now is to work out exactly what caused this man this gunman to set off on his rampage early days i know paul but any information on the suspect indeed the interior minister who raced down from paris down to tried as soon as the incident started to unfold has given a news conference in the past column is his name he gave us a few more details about the identity the name of the age. tilly's said. the terrorists name is red one. he was twenty six years old when it was known for petty crimes we had followed him but we think he was not radicalized he jumped to the asked abruptly he was already under surveillance yeah unfortunately we lost our link with paul brennan there but he was actually
6:06 pm
leading into what we heard there from the interior minister what we know the very little we do know at this point about the suspect in this shooting in france if you want to get in touch with us if by chance you are in the region we're hoping to actually speak to some of them there but want to get in touch with us hashtag a j news grid on twitter at a.j. english if you want to reply to the tweet there. and with the hashtag we'll keep a lookout for that facebook dot com zeros with a live stream is to watch and comment as you go around the what's that number and the telegram numbers are plus nine seven four five one triple one four nine on your mobile phone to get in touch with us directly. we will move on just for now syria and rebels in the group to have agreed to a truce in the southern part of the enclave one of three parts controlled by the rebels government forces have been bombing the area for weeks now even despite a short lived cease fire fighters in another section and had surrendered on thursday and the other area duma continues to be hammond by bombs just to
6:07 pm
understand a bit more about this we turn to every trusty syria's civil war map who's controlling what so we are of course talking about this tiny little area near damascus but we do have a more detailed map here and it's those three areas you heard me mention huster and duma as well days of the three spots small parts of eastern good which is still under rebel control and it is in those two southern ones that we are seeing this cease fire of sorts and surrenders going on zain i thought of following events from us for us as ever from beirut to talk us through this and i guess where it's actually taking us with regards to maybe an end to the situation in eastern guta. well this is the second deal of its kind in eastern huta like you mention eastern who has now divided into three pockets as a result of the government offensive three pockets which is under the control of the opposition but surrounded by pro-government forces two days ago on wednesday i
6:08 pm
heard a sham that is the rebel faction in control of agreed to surrender and seven thousand five hundred people are now being bussed to the northwestern province of idlib which is under the control of the opposition a few hours ago man of the rebel faction which is in control of these southern pockets a few towns in the south and pockets they too have agreed to evacuate up to seven thousand people will be bussed this well to tomorrow morning of course it's not just fighters and their families civilians are leaving as well people who were involved in opposition you know activities like media activists medics civil defense volunteers these people are considered terrorists by the syrian government so they cannot stay so these two rebel factions agreeing to surrender and of course you have duma that procket in the north. refusing to surrender we understand that the o'shea sions have stalled is coming under fire and of course there are people in this pocket so interesting how negotiations saying iran now finally seeming to
6:09 pm
work out to the bombardment in the pictures we see of the salute destruction and then oster all of that they reach a negotiation. well i guess we've seen this this is a strategy to military tactic that has been used over the past seven years the syrian government laid siege to an area and they bomb it into a submission star of the people and give them the choice to leave starve or die so this has happened in the past in the united nations has criticized this force displacement because at the end of the day you're making people leave their homes and and live is not any safer if live is going under the control of the opposition but it is coming under fire the past three days dozens of civilians were killed and the number of attacks there's been a number of air strikes in a number of areas children among the ted yesterday a border town a market was hit and many children died so at the end of the day they are being moved to another safe area ok zain thank you for the update. in beirut.
6:10 pm
and now we have just ruined us director at the center for middle east studies at the university of oklahoma he's currently in italy thank you as ever for your time joshua hopefully you could hear what sino was saying there in her report it is a horrible cynical way of doing things isn't it this bomb some bomb people into submission and then they do submit but as far as the syrian government is concerned it's worked hasn't it. it hasn't you know and it reminds one a little bit of what went on in world war two for example when the united states attacked and in tokyo in march the biggest single event in world war two firebombing of tokyo where one hundred twenty five thousand people were killed in one night they called it the night of the black reign and yet the japanese refused to surrender and so then you got mega saki and hiroshima where a hundred thousand each of those cities was killed in one night and japan did
6:11 pm
surrender and then that's you know in a sense what's been going on here in syria is just brutal warfare where people get killed of course in syria it's been about two thousand one hundred six thousand six hundred people killed so darn it was done the last several weeks but but the devastation is total. and this is a huge broad statement i'm going to make joshua but is this war looking like it's coming to an end as i look at the map of syria who controls what there is not a lot left in rebel control asshole and you just get the feeling that this is that sort of beginning of the end situation well i mean we've been saying this for a long time because i mean at the end and it it it does it does seem that way of course there are many areas like the whole debt off reach and next to the border with jordan which is still quite project there is that tons area which america is
6:12 pm
controlling in the desert that's very important because the highway to baghdad from damascus and syria wants that opened america wants closed and you know the united states continues to own thirty percent of syrian territory in the north which turkey has promised it's going to attack in order to get rid of the y.p. jeep. it will have problems there's still a number of areas that you know that fighting could drag out for a long time indeed see what we're seeing and it wound up all over again. so one final sorry one final thought from you just received matches have coffee off camera there for a second. what happens and i know i'm cristobal guys in here again but after the war you know if bashar al assad is still in power in effect you've had seven years of war nothing's changed except that the country's been destroyed yes
6:13 pm
and unfortunately it looks like syrians are going to be at the worst of all worlds because they're going to be left with the same regime in power and this country will be divided the united states holds thirty percent and perhaps fifty percent of syria's resource fifty percent of oil and gas much of the best agricultural land turkey is taking a much bigger slice now and topping the american model in order to gain leverage and that means that trade will not return the country will be divided and weak assad will be very poor it will be up to the russians and iranians to help rebuilding it it's not clear that they will do that and that way they'll be little commerce and it'll it's going to strangle people and we're already see the lebanese government coming under tremendous financial pressure in part because there is no train meet it's not growing the roads to amman to baghdad are closed and that situation may remain the way it is for some time to see what the new you know
6:14 pm
recruits in the trump administration have planned for syria perhaps they'll be some product surprises there but perhaps not just you and i and i thank you for your time thank you for bringing us your expertise on this topic thank you. we're going to go back to our breaking news now the developing story as i said out of france where his hostage situation at a grocery store in target is now over however three people are dead and we believe the gunman is as well we have got the ana shanahan on the line now who was in tribe close to the supermarket when the shooting happened tell us about what you saw and heard. hi how are you. it starts off in caucus on the floor the actual living when the gunman opened fire.
6:15 pm
but he actually shot. jocking officers that were on the way back to the p.c. . they were obviously noticed by three to eight and they chased the two track which is a little village caucus on and there he is an officer. to the local interest people market super you and she show the culture and the shot of the church. a little cario. all right ok so i thought i'd lost you though unfortunately they both died and two of the hostages were injured and within three or four hours the police had negotiations for the cost. that they were eventually released. the fire brigade the bomb brigades that helicopters all over all caracas on an ultra sound booth were on lockdown people staying in the houses they want to leave for.
6:16 pm
anyone driving in the vicinity of supermarkets were evacuated from their cars so the cars were left there on the road and then once the hostages were released the opportunity obviously couldn't get the gunman to give himself up so there i think about. five forty minutes ago she was killed. can you describe from a water slide what goes through your head what instincts come to you when you find yourself are close to a situation like this. it's actually surreal because you see it all the time on television and it's always in. some corners of some other country or some other town but it's not. and my two children are in school and practiced on so when i was of shape actually the house to go through the trip when my partner
6:17 pm
rang me and he said where are you and i said well i'm trip and he's like oh no i said why what happened because i was forced mission for launch and she said going i'd lock the doors lock two interesting things that were happening and she's working center caucus on so she she wasn't supposed to he didn't realize but he left work to go back to the house try to get in contact with the school so. she got home and he told me that i couldn't stop all the road work so that when we really realized how serious the world trust was on total lockdown then it was like on t.v. so we thought everything was going to be what was happening and she then couldn't sleep the house the all the kids were cousins school so we rang the school she rang the school for the day will change a protocol of what they're trained to do a search the tops of the kids were sick and you know but then when your kids are beside you you always worry be mono of course one hundred straw that was or is out here or. thank you or not just what an extraordinary situation that you are and so
6:18 pm
many went through thank you so much for your time i'm glad we could talk to you and hear firsthand what it was like to thank you. moving on it is another day in the white house and just lately that's meant another shakeup to donald trump's front line this time the president has decided to replace his national security advisor and the man he has picked for the post to replace him is a hardline advocate against countries like iran russia and north korea we're talking about john bolton who's making a return to politics he once served as u.s. ambassador to the united nations made the announcement of course on twitter bolton to replace. the current national security adviser next month so let's get to know john bolton a little better he has served under several republican administrations gaining a reputation as a hardliner he was a regular feature on television programs pushing for tough policy positions he
6:19 pm
argued for military action against a number of u.s. adversaries as we say north korea included and wants the wilds to take a stronger stance against russia in a two thousand and fifteen new york times opinion column he called for air strikes against nuclear facilities in iran and while working for george w. bush he pushed for the invasion into iraq he was accused of manipulating intelligence reports he said saddam hussein had developed weapons of mass destruction which we course now know was untrue well we have interviewed john bolton before here on al-jazeera so we dug through the archives and found a few snippets from some years ago here is what he had to say about iran in twenty ten i think the biggest risk to peace and security in the region is iran with nuclear weapons you know iran is an equal opportunity supporter of terrorism it's it supports hamas which is sunni it supports hezbollah which is shia it supports terrorism in iraq it supports taliban in afghanistan it threatens the stability of other regimes in the region all of its behavior gets much worse once it gets
6:20 pm
nuclear weapons i think the arab governments in the region understand that i don't think they want to iran to have nuclear weapons any more than the united states or israel do. twenty ten that was on an episode of frost over the world and then we have this clip two thousand and seven where john bolton spells out his worries about north korea well i think north korea is up to its old tricks you know north korea loves to negotiate about giving up its nuclear weapons program in the past fifteen years it's even agreed four or five times to to do exactly that in exchange for tangible economic and political benefits the only difficulty is when it comes down to it north korea never follows through on its commitment john bolton on the risk that takes me back a bit here is my own bashara now a senior political analyst in london to talk about this what's your gut feeling mo and how much does one man in a very important position will be about how much difference does one man make here as far as u.s. foreign policy goes well look considering that the president has very little
6:21 pm
foreign policy experience and doesn't seem to have accumulated much of it the last year. or interest for that matter clearly the national security adviser has the president's ear and hence has a lot of influence it's also important that there is chemistry between the two in as much as this chemistry between the new secretary of state pompei o. and the presidents here we have two hawks with very close proximity to the president with a very good and intimate knowledge of international affairs that said it would be able to influence the president also it seems that bolton has been in touch with the president over the last several months and hence they have a relationship of sorts and clearly he would be able to influence the president on issues that the president is let's say not too educated about that this would be the concern isn't especially at the moment that president trump is heading towards
6:22 pm
direct talks with kim jong un and north korea and now he'll have someone in his ear who clearly wants to take a military line and possibly still does want to take a military line with north korea. well for the time being it seems like you know john bolton known as the kiss up kick down kind of a politician kind of an inside that he's already been. you know playing nice with the idea of talking to north korea or although or although he criticized even attacked president obama for showing willingness to sit down with the north korean leader he's actually praised president thrown for want to do that in fact he was cited as saying hey why not why not do it march why wait until may to sit down with the north korean leader so you know he will he's what he probably would be appeasing dog thrown in as much as influencing him because as everyone seems to
6:23 pm
notice and as mcmaster did not you need to compliment the president you need to play nice you need to appease the president in order to be able to influence the presidents what about the iran deal mowen the j c p u a as it's officially called do you think that's potentially under threat now. the invest what you would call quote the trump card. clearly the hostility towards iran is going to continue and escalate and that's why there was a need for that kind of a change at the white house as well as at the state department clearly there's an escalation to words iran clearly there is a sect in the what i would call israel is words iran so you could say and here is the big elephant in the room come out trump this spite his hatred to john bolton's mustache that apparently according to the washington post and the
6:24 pm
new york times was. a breaker in terms of not hiring john bolton clearly he did hire him despite his moustache because i think the agree all too well on the question of iran moment bashar thank you so much for that moment our senior political analyst in london how extraordinary leader we would be talking about amends and stuff when national security advisor i've heard some people mention that online today when he takes the yellow any time there's a shakeup in the white house we see conversation like this on line john bolton is one of the top conversations trending in the united states at the moment some people are shocked others they're celebrating his appointment. you farand. if you search for bolton and maga or make america great again on twitter you can see just how excited many trump supporters are for the change this is one of the most shared videos online at the moment even though it's from last year antonio jr is running for congress and he tweeted quote americans will sleep better at night
6:25 pm
with bolton as national security adviser can't say the same for america's foes but as we heard earlier not everyone is thrilled one of the most popular tweets about bolton is from u.s. senator bernie sanders he said john bolton was part of the effort to mislead the u.s. into the disastrous iraq war and this supported military action against north korea and iran he was too extreme to be confirmed as u.n. ambassador in two thousand and five and is absolutely the wrong person to be national security advisor now we want to hear what you think which side of the aisle you fall on when it comes to this appointment you can write me directly at least a hearty a.j. even write us on what's up telegram or user hash tag a.j. news grid thank you if i spoke live as well facebook dot com slash now to zero a comment from one of our viewers so north korea is a real threat to us dogmatism the u.s. administration is now soft on north korean crisis and that would be i guess the argument that john bolton could come in and present really influence that and take
6:26 pm
a tougher line also plenty of you writing in on the situation in syria at the moment and just this one question or comment from pauline summed it up for me when she said how can they ever build eastern ghouta again you know i was thinking the same thing as we saw those pictures i think they were drawing shots going over the group that utterly destroyed like so many other parts of the country and when this war does eventually come to an end it is so much of the country which will need rebuilding again biggest believe where you even start quite frankly your comments your questions the hashtags a.j. newsgroup twitter facebook whatsapp and telegram. this is the news good if you're watching us on facebook live well it's comes down for months october going his company you're about to see how the social media giant is grappling with a loss of public trusts and then later on rescue is in western australia a race against the clock trying to save these one hundred and fifty beached whales way back and.
6:27 pm
some rather lively weather moving across northern parts of the middle east at a moment bigger is a class spilling out to turkey's a rolling out of the black sea cascades scene you can see it does look rather overcast for the time being not too much rain on that at least away from turkey saturday that's like a very wet day here very windy as well some brisk winds coming through that stiff wind there will be a feature across iraq maybe into western parts of iraq we'll see temperatures in the southerly winds getting to thirty three cells just there in baghdad so quite a picture further east couple at around twenty one celsius picking up to twenty four as we go on through sunday cloud really right that will make its way little further a swiss by this day so things will quieten down high by really getting up to around twenty one celsius or twenty eight in baghdad with the possibility of a little bit of patchy right just maybe for northern parts of iraq we could have twenty nine here in holland sassed
6:28 pm
a pleasantly warm light winds not too bad the winds will pick up a little as we go on into sunday could touch thirty two degrees out where i was you can see more very warm sunshine coming in right across the region the sunshine continues across the a western side of south africa the eastern side we'll see some showers once again and further north live down pulls in mozambique. it looks ugly and sounds ugly and scares people from america's high streets to mexico's on the wild free control just this side and who controls the other side people in power follows the smuggling route and test the ease of acquiring untraceable weapons on american soil the weapon that was designed for war and it took you about five minutes to buy it unless you try america's guns arming mexico's cartels on al-jazeera congressman are you interested in stopping crime one of the
6:29 pm
really special things about working for al jazeera is that even as a camera woman i get to have so much empathy and contribution to a story i feel we cover this region better than anyone else would be what it is you know it's very challenging liberally but the good because you have a lot of people that are divided on political issues we are we the people we live to tell the real stories are just mended is to deliver in-depth journalism we don't feel inferior to the audience across the globe.
6:30 pm
they were dot com and what's trending as well not surprised to see stories on john bolton high today it has been a very popular story. on the mall that issue which killed fourteen people yesterday as well look at some of the top stories there some of the news stories as well coming up here what's trending it out as we talk. so we've been hearing a lot about this brewing trade war between the u.s. and china and we're in that same as we are now closer to that than ever china is warning don't try to pull back from the brink that's a quote he ordered sixty billion dollars with a tariffs on chinese imports beijing has hit back with its plans to slap the u.s.
6:31 pm
a three billion dollars of levies of its own on products including pork and steel solace to the tap trade which has sent shock waves through global markets as well scott has more from shanghai firing back china responded within hours to president donald trump's announcement of the tariffs beijing said it's planning to impose three billion dollars in tariffs of its own targeting one hundred twenty eight u.s. goods bound for china focusing on agriculture wine fruit nuts and pork products but also recycled aluminum and steel pipes this is china vowed it will not back down from a trade war while insisting the friction should be resolved through negotiations. if the dispute continues china says it could damage the broader picture of cooperation between the world's two largest economies it's telling the us to pull back from the brink. it's a destructive move china and the us so will trade leaders i think it's going to
6:32 pm
escalate gradually it will damage the economic relationship between the two countries and that will have a negative impact on the global economy both nations have said they're going to start legal action through the world trade organization here in china's commercial capital shanghai there's growing concern over a trade war with the u.s. they're worried about jobs in their worried about chinese businesses. so it may affect employment in china since export is a big part of china's economy there's a lot of low and industry but in many people's jobs a dependent on export. so i watch a lot of news of course china will fight back but the point of doing business is that we both win it doesn't work if america is the only leader china has to protect its own interests to the increased trade tension could prove to be a challenge for chinese president xi jinping who by a measure passed during the national people's congress earlier this month can
6:33 pm
remain as leader indefinitely a big trade war with the u.s. could slow china's rapid growth critical to his long term vision it's got harder al-jazeera shanghai. ok so trade was is this catch phrase at the moment i think it needs a little bit of explaining as to what it exactly is now i showed you some of this last night and in photograph it from al-jazeera dot com called china and the u.s. face to face i'm going to skip right down to it i go to thought this one ok so have a look at this the yellow line is showing everything that the united states imports from china we're talking billions and billions of dollars with but china is only importing this much from the united states and this is what upsets donald trump this trade deficit the number in blue there and the reason that he says the united states is getting a raw deal so we're going to talk to stand about as he's a resident scholar at the american enterprise institute joining us from washington d.c. and we thank you for your time stan. made the point that this phrase trade war keeps
6:34 pm
getting used all over the place i want you to explain to us what it actually means in consequences first of all for the wider global economy if you've got tariffs going on either side between the u.s. and china how does it affect me in qatar how does it affect someone in the u.k. how does it affect someone in australia tell us. well the the increase in their ads and in general and to a broader protection is measures that we've started to see a little bit in that people worry are going to ask the late what it does is it makes products more expensive for consumers because they can no longer source them basically from wherever they want to read so if china is the cheapest manufacturer of clothing you'd want to buy a lot of your clothing from china if your government keeps you from doing that then that's that's harder to do. secondly and this is important even for people in countries that are not directly involved here there are a lot of global supply chains that involve tons of different countries within the
6:35 pm
media products being shipped from one to another and back if companies can no longer rely on those supply chains being able to function without sudden interruptions they're going to pull back from those and they will you know ill effect employment in different places and it will make their friend goods more expensive everywhere eroding people's purchasing power again short story it's not a good thing and yet donald trump was to say once that trade was can be a good thing and they're easy to win based on everything you've just said i would question that and surely when you stop getting down the throat of tariffs on either side people must know about the wider knock on effect. yeah for sure and so the only possible justification i see and this only really applies in airlie to china is that the u.s. is worried about the way in which china forces foreign multinational corporations to transfer intellectual property and about the ways in which china's own state
6:36 pm
owned enterprises operate but you know the w w t o the world trade organization access for reason it's exactly the settled that kind of dispute this kind of dispute i don't think they unite lateral tariffs imposed by the u.s. not even in collaboration with its closest allies in western europe are going to force china make these drastic changes to its inductor mergers so i really don't see any upside here ok but could it potentially open up opportunities elsewhere i know what you describe you're saying that china in particular is in the supply chain almost everywhere all over the world but there may be. opportunities for just straight bilateral trade in which can open up as a result of this for sure there's always going to be you know specific firm specific country specific individual that that will benefit or at least in there that will benefit and narrow industries from measures like this i think of the steel and aluminum there of that. do s.
6:37 pm
announced a couple weeks ago if those are really applied across the board then u.s. steel may have factors would benefit the people who work for us to still factories would benefit but you know that would come to a much larger cost to people who work in industries that require steel aluminum is imposed and do consumers at large so i totally agree with you that there are already a small subset of people and for and countries that may benefit certainly in the short run but that doesn't outweigh the overall losses the rest of us then so it's been great talking to you really explain that clearly for us and i do appreciate that thank you. yes richard javid hadari and as a regular contributor to our desire to come back in february write this what a u.s. trade us china trade war would look like in which he says among many other things what's clear is that almost overnight the u.s. has transformed from a preeminent advocate of free trade into a protectionist villain in the eyes of both friends and foes you can find the
6:38 pm
opinion section this article and many more right at the top of the menu bar at al-jazeera dot com and a few comments on facebook as well trade was made people poor china will go strong to combat trade wars but this will probably have a negative impact on world trade certainly that's what stan was outlining to us there now al jazeera has received new information about how people in yemen are going missing human rights group accuse us backed forces of being behind the disappearances of some a binge of aid has been looking at that. many in southern yemen are demanding to know where their missing relatives are and human rights groups accusing militias which are backed by the united arab emirates of making arbitrary arrests in aden and latch. they say some detainees have been tortured and others are banned from contacting their families testimonies given to al-jazeera provide new insight into how young men are disappearing. i'm from thai as i'm just
