i'm a woman i get to have so much empathy and contribution to a story i feel we cover this region better than anyone else working for us as you know it's very challenging liberally particularly because you have a lot of people that are divided on political issues we are we the people we live to tell the real stories are just mended is to deliver in-depth journalism we don't feel inferior to the audience across the globe. the nature of news as it breaks this was a great election about it was going to win but it was about by how much with detailed coverage the syrian civil war no moves into the state of what is different is that each day some people will live until to morrow many innocent people will die from around the world the bats and balls are several years old when really good players could end up trading cricket academy and maybe one day play for the national team.

side of things is going to be progressing fairly quickly in the days ahead while staying in russia the emir of qatar has arrived in the country for talks with the president vladimir putin no he's the first foreign leader to visit moscow since putin was comfortably reelected last week now the talks are expected to focus on economic toys the blockade against qatar turned the war in syria. large actions of started casting their ballots in three days of voting to choose a new president the incumbent of them for the c.c. is widely expected to win and her opponents with through saying they faced intimidation is a new challenge it is most of whose previously expressed support for sisi critics say the vote is a shiraz and have called for a boy he calls. looks at season's first four years in office. although

opted for the has since he was only named president in june two thousand and fourteen the former army general has been in control of egypt since july the previous year when he led a coup deposing the country's first democratically elected president mohamed morsi since taking power sisi has made numerous promises and pledges to the egyptian people in a bid to win their support first he vowed to defeat what he described as potential violence and terrorism in the digital fleet i call on all egyptians to take to the streets to task me with preventing the potential violence and terrorism that threatens us. in reality however since sisi became president attacks and bombings appear to have increased dramatically across the country i saw which did not have a branch in egypt recruited fighters and began killing soldiers and police officers in sinai but the violence was not limited to the peninsula car bombs in central cairo and alexandria are testament to cc's inability to deliver on his promise of
11:09 am
security another pledge made by the army general was to build a national road network that would connect cities and help improve road safety i would i will build a world class road network within one year that will connect all of egypt. four years have now passed not only does egypt have an extremely poor road network according to the world health organization it ranks amongst the ten worst countries for road safety with deaths being an almost daily occurrence. c.c. had also promised to drastically improve the economy and increase living standards there was initial hope when his government organized the two thousand and fifteen international economic conference billions of dollars worth of projects were announced until now though very little of those have been achieved even the much hill construction of a new administrative capital has seen little to no developments similar to the pledge of building one million new homes with hundreds of thousands of egyptians

still either homeless or living in slums one promise that was fulfilled by c.c. was the expansion of the suez canal however the promised revenue from this project has not materialized in fact after convincing the public to help fund the project through investment bonds the government's own figures show revenue from the suez canal has actually dropped as a result of the decline in maritime cha fic says he has been president for four years and in power for five in the early days he had promised to transform egypt into a world power the reality is that he presides over a country where thirty percent live below the poverty line and the vast majority are struggling to remain just above it his critics doubts that's another four years will bring any significant improvement. the egyptian government has been cracking down on the media in the run up to the election hundreds of websites and blogs have been blocked but it's understood that hasn't stopped the

online conversation. it appears more egyptians have been busy discussing football and the arabic version of the t.v. program the voice then the presidential elections on monday but security certainly became a trending topic over the weekend after an attack on egypt's second city alexandria on saturday now at least two people were killed including a policeman in what the ministry of interior has called an assassination attempt of a local security official prime minister sharif ismail says such attacks will not affect the election process but security is high across egypt's major cities and more than thirteen thousand polling places and it remains a central issue in this campaign many twitter users outside of egypt are talking about the same thing with me sharing some critical pieces from the economist in the new york times which focus on the security dimensions of the election in the new york times asking why president sisi appears to be worried if the election is supposed to be a lock now the president has adopted a more threatening tone in the final month of campaigning focusing on unspecified

enemies while the economist says that sisi must provide security and jobs for young people if not there's a recipe for more of people down the road and while they like many of the supporters say that his firm hand has prevented egypt from collapsing in recent years they say he should respect the constitution and ignore his most sycophantic supporters who want to amend the constitution to let him rule for life and then you can you tell them to say we did give me a loser you much and while a number of famous actors and singers have helped spread cc's message to nearly sixty million eligible voters to come down and participate many egyptians are wondering if their vote will even matter the hash tag why are you boycotting the elections was trending on the eve of the vote after seven political parties and one hundred fifty opposition figures denounced the process as a farce calling for a boycott one of the most popular posts from the former sisi supporters. compares

this choice whether to boycott or not to a. football match he says if the results are known in advance and the referee is bribed the fans would certainly boycott the match so we'll have to see if these security issues and the perceived lack of choice will have an impact on voter turnout remember that the last time sisi ran nearly half of eligible voters did turn out giving him nearly ninety seven percent of the vote well still ahead here on al-jazeera it's been hailed as a success but will the march for. any real impact on gun control in the u.s. . vote the c.e.o. of facebook is doing to calling sanity over the cambridge and lunatic a scandal those stories on the other side of the break to stay with us. from long flowing on in the winds to an enchanting desert breeze.

hello and welcome to international weather forecast now starting in europe you see another area of low pressure pushing across southeastern areas and this is likely produce more rain deede some snow and higher elevations look at the forecast again big temperature contrast athens at twenty bucharest two so that will be some thawing taking place across this region as well of snow which is previously fallen elsewhere we've got to find conditions there for rome quite across central parts of europe and across western areas looking quite moderate moment temperatures well on into the teens but we have got this frontal system pushing towards the u.k. and then through france during the course of choose day twenty one degrees the high in madrid at that stage and then dry conditions across southeastern parts of europe now as we head into north africa with a little circulation of low pressure across north africa cross the libyan desert so that could pull up some dust across into benghazi and through towards tripoli which would be quite cool and cloudy with temperatures of just fifteen degrees but further east karo well into the thirty's for central parts of africa plenty of

faced intimidation. of the law is an assistant professor of history at georgetown university in qatar joins me now here in the studio good to have you with us again on the program we talked before about why this vote is or is not a legitimate one for the international community let's talk about good governance now that's a huge challenge for the next incoming president whoever that may be what are the challenges ahead when you have scenarios such as inflation hovering at fifteen percent subsidies subsidies having been reduced to many of the public increasing the poverty levels within the country and the minimum wage in real terms being slashed by at least fifty percent well let's remember that when when you know c.c. launched the coup in july of two thousand and thirteen in that part of the reasoning the logic but. the idea of a military takeover was the fact that the revolutionary process that had been launched a mubarak in twenty eleven was seen as being very destabilizing for the economy and
11:18 am
so part of his promise was to say look you know i'm coming in and restoring order but specifically i'm also restoring kind of some vision of economic prosperity and this was the promise that he he ran on as well in his initial kind of coronation as part of the presidential election in two thousand and fourteen so i think that that when we look at kind of the metrics in terms of how he's performed economically he certainly hasn't kept up any of those those pledges and in fact by lifting those subsidies in order to ensure greater financing from the international monetary fund in another international investors he's had to kind of really leave most of the most vulnerable citizens of egypt without their basic safety net and these are things these are reforms that were attempted all the way going back to the era of anwar sadat under mubarak even during this very brief presidency of mohamed morsi there was an attempt to try and think about how to encourage international investment but all of them decided in the end that they couldn't do it at the expense of the population and of course they weren't able to lift those subsidies the reason he's been succeeding in that is because of course he's also implemented
11:19 am
a very strong security program that has kind of left the population in fear of protesting or even expressing any kind of disapproval with these policies and some analysts do actually connects not issue of that of poverty. the downturn in the economy to radicalize ation in the way that individuals look for another alternative an alternative that isn't that of the political spectrum of the moment because of the clamping down on free speech rights and again this was kind of part of the pledge of the kind of sisi logic of coming into power as an authoritarian rule was the fact that he was going to restore order restore economic prosperity but of course having done none of those things it's only actually exacerbated the security problems throughout egypt but especially in the sinai as well and this isn't a government that necessarily enjoys the same degree of recognition or legitimacy. the part of many people from within the population who had been invested in some kind of a revolutionary transition the same egyptians of course who rose up against hosni
11:20 am
mubarak because precisely the kinds of abuses that sisi has now made permanently a factor in his presidency will leave that and of course continue to follow the discussion on various subjects throughout the day of the aryan thanks so much for joining us. the former catalan president is expected to appear in court in germany now he was arrested on sunday after traveling through finland and denmark he faces charges of rebellion and sedition in spain which stem from last year's session vote in catalonia angry protesters in barcelona call for pujols release police said three demonstrators were arrested and fifty were injured in the scuffles. they were cheating is live for us in boston of course those tensions we presume are still remain on the streets of barcelona what is this it's like on monday morning. well i was over night in on those streets and i think the final figures are something like ninety
11:21 am
injuries so of course there were just the use of police batons and twenty two policemen were injured in one stage during those skirmishes if you like to call it that the police were forced to draw their weapons and fire shots into the air to keep back the crowds now that is not an easy situation and i think that when we see the appearance of colors push them all in the german court today that will. provoke another response and so at the moment there is a great tension here that the momentum of protest is building it may have been quiet for a few weeks here but it's definitely back on the cards non it's very much a case that the protesters and the members of the catalan parliament especially the speaker do not want violence in this situation they want to keep it peaceful protests but what they're saying is essentially that the madrid authorities are
11:22 am
mounting a campaign of what they call repression and revenge and it's striking at what they say is the heart of democracy and there are real calls for action may be a strike throughout catalonia and the formation of a new front to coordinate this action so this is going to this is going to build during the course of the week with more appearances by by in the court and whether he's remanded in custody or not by that court in germany i will also have an impact because if everybody main the main leadership has been decapitated from the separatist movement and if the former president is actually in prison as well i think you can expect a very strong reaction here in barcelona and across catalonia and of course state i think raise eyebrows is raised eyebrows a cross in europe at the way madrid as you've just touched upon have been so quickly to reissue that arrest warrant surprisingly leading to the situation that
11:23 am
we've seen in the past forty eight hours. that's right i mean there is a problem with this european arrest warrant in as much as that there's going to be what they call the jewel criminality that is if the charges against puts them on which are as you said sedition rebellion and misuse of public funds do they have those same charges in germany and actually they don't they don't have anything courts edition they don't have anything called rebellion but they have something called high treason which is very similar so the judges have got to decide it's not the politicians it's the judges of the courts of law who decide in the european system whether he'll face a fair trial here and whether there is. a similarity in the court system so there's a lot going to stand on that decision in germany today whether he's put back in prison put back into a detention center or remanded on bail then he'd be very much in the same situation
11:24 am
as he was in belgium where he was free to move free to talk free to talk to the press and free to continue trying to coordinate the attempts against the redress authorities so a lot rests on that decision in the court in germany and i will come back to you for analysis reaction as and when it happens for the moment david thank you. south korea has secured an exemption from have to u.s. steel tariffs in exchange for revising the country's free trade agreement under the changes u.s. automakers will be allowed to double the number of cars they can import into south korea and south korea will now have to comply with a quota which cut steel imports to the u.s. by about thirty percent the agreements the south korean become the first u.s. ally to receive an indefinite exemption from the tower its people we hear from books from big amid rising uncertainties in the global market due to the united states treat actions against china the latest agreement has moved to uncertainties
