business updates brought to you by qatar airways going places together. for the final solution here.
1:01 pm
this is al-jazeera. hello there i'm oracle this is a special extended edition of the news hour live from doha coming up. like. saudi arabia says it shot down seven missiles fired by who think rebels in yemen targeting the kingdom's ports. at least sixty four people are dead dozens more missing after a fire at a shopping center in siberia. polls open in egypt for an election that involves little suspense. i'm joining the day's sports cricket australia sends its investigators to south africa as major sponsors assess their relationship with the team over a ball tampering scandal. saudi

arabia's military says it shot down seven missiles fired from yemen who think rebels say they carried out the strikes targeting several polls. say at least one person was killed brandon alexander has the latest. loud explosions and bright flashes in the sky saudi arabia's and forces it intercepted a series of ballistic missiles fired from neighboring yemen who three rebels say they've targeted airports in several cities including the capital riyadh and egyptian resident there was killed the hoofy leader is warning there's more to come on the use of long range drones which have excellent military capabilities we will activate the military institutions in an unprecedented way yes. open up more opportunities to recruit the children and men about people to fight. saudi arabia
1:03 pm
is leading a coalition that has been fighting the who things in yemen since march two thousand and fifteen thank you mr president u.s. president donald trump may have been braced saudi's crown prince mohammed bin soundman at the white house last tuesday but it didn't stop the senate from voting on a resolution calling for the end of u.s. support for saudi forces in yemen saudi war effort and particularly air campaign over yemen has not stopped it has only increased lately so i imagine it's normal that these are firing. to show that they are still capable and. not to be taken for granted militarily. at least ten thousand people have been killed in yemen since two thousand and fifteen which is also battling cholera and diptheria outbreaks the u.n. says living conditions there have reached catastrophic levels with more than twenty
1:04 pm
two million requiring some form of food assistance was the point of this three years of war hundreds of thousands of people have died because of quote it are because of starvation this means that you only heard the yemeni civilians on zoloft the hold is still capable to long there are stronger than before and this is another failure to the saudi led coalition in yemen numerous rounds of u.n. sponsored peace talks have failed to stem the bloodshed in yemen diesel xander al jazeera. or thousands of her visa running in sana'a after mark three years since her salary or air campaign began a few rebels control large parts of yemen including the capital saudi arabia's bombing campaign in support of the government which began in march two thousand and fifteen has failed to push the rebels out of sana'a and its cause large numbers of civilian casualties sparking criticism from rights groups and the united nations all rights groups are calling for action to ease the suffering in yemen unicef has
1:05 pm
tweeted as the conflict enters its third year children continue to pay the heaviest price today nearly every single child needs humanitarian assistance. and head of the norwegian refugee council has tweeted three years of war three million people forced to flee two thousand seven hundred forty people on the run every single day because of senseless violence ceasefire and of the blockade and peace talks now. we have human rights watch calling for accountability on the third anniversary of saudi arabia's intervention in the war it said saudi's crown prince must answer for atrocities. and as crazy as the system faster the defense studies department at king's college london he joins us now from berlin just look at these missiles that were fired by heathy rebels to sound see what do we know about the type of weapons that they are right
1:06 pm
what we know so far as they're probably borke onto h. newest type that the yemeni armed forces have or had the who these have taken control of this part of the yemeni armed forces is three or four years ago but at that time the balkans that they had in possession weren't as capable as those once they have been fired over the last six months particularly in terms of range but also in terms of precision what we see now is that they are actually very capable of targeting precisely more or less precisely areas within riyadh which suggests that the missiles they have today have been augmented in terms of their capabilities so we have the old stock still there but they have been a new technology that must have come from overseas partially they have been developed locally in yemen but to be honest the who these don't have the capability the knowledge or the technology to actually built this kind of relatively sophisticated missile system ok so when you say they must come from overseas and we
1:07 pm
then talking about them coming from iran. most likely i'm not saying that so there is a blockade in place i mean part of the human tragedy is the reason for the human tragedy is because the saudi u.a.e. coalition have a blockade and plays because exactly for exactly that matter that no missiles are coming into the country but so you can't ship entire missiles into the country but there are alternative ways to put parts and pieces on ships or over the land route even through a man or other places and then reassemble of them locally in the northern parts of yemen as they have done so it suggests that the cooks force who have operatives on the ground in yemen have helped the who are these and the yemeni armed forces to basically augment the capability of the missiles in order to make them more capable which is part of the deal you know the who these are trying to put pressure on saudi arabia in the upcoming negotiations it seems like there will be mediation on
1:08 pm
that there will be a mediation on the way with a new u.n. envoy the british government has certified who has agreed to play a more active role in mediating that conflict the saudis need to stop now they realize that this there will be an increased toll on their head and increased pressure on saudi arabia and saudi people who these say you know if you don't negotiate with us we will continue with more sophisticated weaponry more missiles being fired and there will be more dead on the side of saudi arabia which is something they can't sustain if three years of war with vastly superior weaponry a lot more money why have the saudis not been able to defeat at the very least destroy their weapons stockpiles. well firstly i think it is because they're the who these are very good in concealing their capability they have been hiding the weaponry they have been assembling the weaponry on spot and then firing them off which makes it very very difficult to
1:09 pm
target them from the air the other problem is the saudi air force doesn't have the kind of reconnaissance capability in order to properly locate targets and that's part of the problem of this entire war the saudis are unable to actually pinpoint targets and that's why they drop bombs on targets which are actually not military but civilian targets and the other issue is that the saudis don't have any boots on the ground they have no eyes on the ground the human intelligence network that you need in order to pinpoint precision strikes on such targets is not available and i think that is the biggest problem that's why this war will never be won from the air and it will probably never be won militarily it's a war that has to come to an end through a political process let's hope it doesn't dress crack. thanks for joining us there from ballin. now at least fifty six people dead and of the forty eight engined after a fire swept through a shopping center in siberia and lays it out but families of the missing a worried because rescue workers have not been able to reach the top floor that's
1:10 pm

1:12 pm
stemming from last year's succession of vote in castle lonia while we were in germany and spain for this story short games they were chasing cattle barcelona is where the been protests but first the barber is in berlin for us so what are we expecting to happen there in court today. well laura sometime on monday and your thirty's are being quite secretive about this we're expecting according to the prosecutor in schleswig-holstein region of northern germany where the mont was was detained we're expecting a court to to have a hearing firstly just to go through the formalities of identifying him but then also to decide whether to refer him to extradition custody or pre extradition custody in other words whether or not they think that the conditions
1:13 pm
are met under which he could be sent back to spain if he agreed to that germany has ten days to extradite him if he does not then it's a sixty day window after which it runs out we're not exactly sure what time this court appearance is going to happen we do know that of course he was detained on his way back from finland and had crossed he traveled by car he was crossing from denmark into northern germany he was arrested or detained at a petrol station and he says via his lawyer that he's going to cooperate fully his lawyers saying that he was always ready to cooperate with the belgian or thirty's but it is still unclear as to what his strategy will be and unclear what the german or thirty's a going to say the government going to great lengths to say it's nothing to do with us right now it's a digital matter a spokesperson for the justice ministry in the last hour or so saying that it's for
1:14 pm
the regional courts to decide what's the german public's thoughts on that and they support the arrest of pushing on a potential extradition of him. so. if rights. i think it's a mixed picture we haven't heard really any strong comments from the political parties apart from some representatives of dealing occur the left which are obviously present in parliament they've supported mr stance and believe that it was constitutional and he has been unfairly treated just a reminder that he fled to belgium along with some other ministers and several others under his leadership have been jailed in catalonia itself. i think really it's a bit of a hot potato now the government just in the last hour again they have come out and said that they can't comment on what other countries did not detain was to put them
1:15 pm
on obviously it seems he was being tracked his presence was known in finland where he attended a conference where he was expounding on his push for catalan independence and then he travelled by car a very long process to try to get back to to belgium over the land route so they're not saying why other states may not have decided to arrest him they're also not saying exactly what will happen next but obviously the decision has been made to that after a tip off from spain's intelligence services and now germany must deal with this in one way or another and send a lot more questions to be out there for the moment that in thank you very much is going on to david chase he is live for us in boston of course we've seen the reaction that very angry protests yesterday what's the mood like there today.
1:16 pm
laura still very much the same they were extraordinary scenes overnight some tens of thousands of people took to the streets during the course of the day but overnight the clashes became quite serious because the police were forced to draw their weapons and shoot warning shots in the air because the protesters were driving large rubbish bins at them so in those sort of situations it becomes very very clear that the danger of real number of casualties or even bullet wounds is an ever present danger and i'm a mentor i'm sure is building here they're very angry about what they describe the catalan separatists describe as an attempt by the government in the dredd to repass to repress this whole democratic movement and to take revenge on this democratic movement and we've also been hearing from the speaker of this catalan parliament that he wants very much for the protesters to desist from any violence of the moment they're saying that's been caused by police police aggressive tactics police
1:17 pm
using their batons causing many injuries and the police themselves have also been ages some twenty two police officers here overnight and so they're trying to remove that violent element from the from the protests they will be building there's been a call from the speaker of this parliament for a united front to be reestablished with the trade unions here there's a demand for general strikes with the people we've been talking to and there really is great anger here and i think it will increase and the demonstrations will increase when we start to see what happens in that german court so i think people are bracing themselves for a long week of protests and in the meantime got madrid the spanish central government a term in to crush the separatist movement of being within a wave of unrest that way the latest the new presidential candidate on friday.
1:18 pm
that's right and the century it's causing reaction elsewhere is as well the past nationalist party has said they're no longer going to cooperate with the government in madrid on trying to form a national budget they say the whole thing is humiliating to any democrat what the madrid government is attempting to do and i think that you might find these protests spreading beyond the region of catalonia and into the basque areas as well this really is being seen by many people as an attempt to decapitate the democratic process and the separatist parliament here which got a majority in the last election they've been trying since december to form a government but each time it seems that the government of madrid is stepping in to create yet another hurdle but as one of the protesters was saying only yesterday there are two million people who want to leave spain and you can't arrest all of them and there is as i say
1:19 pm
a growing momentum to show madrid that once again they have completely angered and isolated the people of catalonia and they want to show that anger and they want to respond david thanks very much to the man from barcelona. plenty more still ahead head on this news hour including an adult film star and public about her relationship with president donald trump and why she says she feared for her life. the sierra leone airport sets aside for the chief says presidential runoff can go ahead. and show we'll tell you how the golden state warriors will limp into the playoffs absence for. the. projections of begun casimir ballots in three days of voting to essentially reelect their current president the incumbent fattah el-sisi poised to win. opponents with drew saying they face intimidation i was only waiting challenger is
1:20 pm
new some new stuff and who has previously expressed support for c.c. positions as the vote as a charade and have called for a boycott and one man is running against abdul fattah el-sisi in egypt's presidential election that is was that was often looser and many other well known and popular contenders tried but failed to make it on to the ballot paper when a hand takes a look at who is not in the come pain and why just two names on the ballot paper two men vying for egypt's presidency now in a country of more than fifty five million eligible voters you might think there'd be a few more candidates well it's not for lack of trying over the last few months every other potential challenger for the presidency has either been detained disqualified or forced to abandon their campaigns completely so who's in and who's out first step sami and now we're talking top brass egyptian military here
1:21 pm
a retired lieutenant general a former army chief of staff a lot of them are awarded in ounce of his candidacy in a recorded video he also happened to mention he had information on government corruption he was arrested soon after the army accusing him of not getting proper commission to run and forging documents. another candidate another wrist this time abdomen name a bull for two a leading opposition figure who ran in the twenty twelve race he was accused of ties to the outlawed muslim brotherhood. fics campaign was short lived a former prime minister with links to the military he was deported from the united arab emirates where he'd been living in exile he was then detained in egypt he subsequently pulled out of the race opposition leader and human rights lawyer khaled early didn't stay in the campaign for long either he said he came up against frequent obstacles when he withdrew he said his supporters had been harassed and

1:23 pm
this election a farce as it stands the outcome looks likely to favor the incumbent president. assistant professor of history at georgetown university and catherine joins us now here in the studio great to have you with us president is popular in egypt today is assured a win so why she goes to all above on the trouble of getting rid of all viable opposition well i think the way that these elections are operating is really to erode the last time once of any kind of attempt at a democratic process right so there was the transition from two thousand and eleven after the overthrow of hosni mubarak and then of course there was a free election in two thousand and twelve the first in egypt's history and everything since the coup that that that overthrew that elected president in two thousand and thirteen has been about going back to this idea of an authoritarian ruler and these elections are merely opportunities for egyptians to kind of show their loyalty and their kind of subordination to this authoritarian regime and it's the specially against the backdrop of this kind of violent crackdown that's been
1:24 pm
taking place for several years now how russell do you think he was by the two were tied generals trying to stand as presidential candidates i mean it's been a lot of speculation that that has exposed a rift behind the scenes within the military right so i think ever since the coup took place there has been a sense that sisi is legitimacy has remained in doubt and that these elections are meant to kind of cement his legitimacy in the eyes of millions of people who refused to kind of recognize him as the legitimate ruler of egypt and so the fact that you have two individuals not just kind of ordinary egyptians citizens but actually coming from the ranks of this ruling class of military elites attempting to challenge him shows that there was actually a little bit of a division internally within the ranks of the regime itself something that they normally try to cover and so i think making that public was extremely threatening to him ok so do you say that for a moment we're just going to see how the election is playing out online i got under
1:25 pm
chappelle standing by for us he's also sure media produces to give us a a snapshot of the discussion missing taking place there. thanks laura now that the polls are open we're seeing some dueling hashtags trending on twitter across egypt now the top hash tag roughly translates to we are going to finish the journey so that's encouraging egyptians to go out and vote in the past few hours it's been used to share clips like this one of president sisi voting earlier on monday at a school in cairo's heliopolis districts well others are using it to share some photos from polling stations like this one and also to talk about what they see as some or many of president cc's achievements during his first term in office now on the other side of the spectrum you have another hash tag that's trending in egypt which is pushing a different choice for voters it translates to don't go down as in don't go down to vote and people are using it to show the reasons why they are boycotting the elections remember there are seven opposition parties and more than one hundred fifty politicians who have called on egyptians to stay home over these next three
1:26 pm
days and some of the reasons that they bring up sixty thousand detainees that's the number that human rights groups say the number of political prisoners who have been rounded up or in many cases disappeared since the military coup in twenty thirteen another reason is that iran and sunnah fear islands which those of the two islands that egypt has agreed to give to saudi arabia another one says this is for our livelihood to highlight egypt's economic and social challenges this last one is what many see as a failure by the government to maintain security including that car bombing in alexandria last saturday that killed two people including a police officer but the government says it is working to address this issue egypt's military has launched a new offensive against armed groups last week in several parts of the country and the egyptian armed forces have released this footage of guards outside polling stations to basically reassure the public now they are promising to create a safe setting for egyptians to go out and cast their votes or i'll keep monitoring
1:27 pm
this for you in the days ahead and for more on the elections you can visit our spotlight page that's at al-jazeera dot com and if you're in egypt we'd love to hear from you you can share your views with us on whatsapp or telegram the number is plus nine seven four five zero one one four nine or you can message me on twitter directly. and you're right this is become what angie was saying that this big call for a boycott turned out masses to c.c. doesn't it do you think he's going to get the number of votes that are going to legitimize his reelection well it's impossible to know because i think the way that the voting process has been structured especially doing a three day election gives the regime tremendous license to be able to subtly many people at this process will never really know how many egyptians have actually taken to these these polls because as we saw especially in the last vote i think when the very abruptly added a third day of voting a lot of that was seen as being an attempt to kind of stuff the ballot boxes and there was tremendous amount of footage that was floating around social media that
1:28 pm
was showing you know state security agents that were stuffing thousands of ballots into these boxes maybe they'll be a little bit less sloppy about it this time but certainly we can expect that that this is not going to be any true measure it's really more about the perception and for sisi of course that perception matters to be able to stand before the world and say you know tens of millions of egyptians all came out in a firm there in the world to win their approval of my rule and this is something of course that's meant to consolidate his his control in a way that he hasn't succeeded to doing so so thus far maybe people are already looking for years down the line to what comes next this is the second of his two year do we think he's going to try to cement his power to stay in power longer well of course this would be going back on the promise that he made initially when he said he wouldn't attempt to stand for more than two terms this is this is a very plainly kind of false move that many authoritarian regimes kind of undertake
1:29 pm
where they say they won't go beyond a kind of two term limit but what people are expecting is that very soon after this vote there will be an attempt to change the constitution to allow him to continue to run and effectively govern egypt a definitely which is kind of been the playbook by which most of the authoritarian rulers not just in egypt but really across the region a kind of maintained. he relies so much as the on the support from outside. the u.s. but one wonders whether they'll go all the way and support war terms of c.c. even the two year limit right well we haven't seen any indication to the contrary for the most part there's been tremendous backing of him by of course the united states and many of his regional allies who've seen egypt as being a very reliable partner for most of their regional agendas and i don't think we can expect to see much change or let up in that kind of support because as long as he's kind of continued to serve their interests will be more than happy to kind of continue to maintain him in power a great speech he thanks very much for coming in. now in just a few moments we'll have all weather with richard and then still ahead on

1:35 pm
basically when a member of the ruling party. the votes to be recounted the judge on such a day slummed an interim injunction on the election happening two more now the election commission challenge that decision saying that. the high court constitutionally is not empowered to hear the case is that much at all to see we've got the presidential elections is handled by the supreme court so the judge that day said you need to file briefs on that we would take all those submissions challenging the jurisdiction of this court not to entertain this case so the been asked to come back today to file their brief they did that some thirty five minutes ago what will happen now in the next one and have also so the judge will sit on this case and determine whether or not the elections will go on. as it did monday
1:36 pm
by by the election lol insisted that the presidential petitions will all go to the supreme court for the tabulation so that are two things now it's either the judge says there is no election tomorrow in which case the election commission will take the matter to the supreme court all it will allow the elections to hold by which of course the election commission has already lost forty eight hours in terms of its preparations or to do the commission said it has delivered materials to such an areas but it hasn't been able to reach communities for the conduct of elections it wanted the last two days for that to happen and now this matter if you decided that the elections will go ahead to mortal it's difficult to say whether or not the election commission will hold it tomorrow. election commission is hinting that it may not be able to do so his case goes to the supreme court it will take
1:37 pm
a long time to tell and of course the longer this drags on the more risk there is of election related violence growing more widespread. absolutely there's been tension all around issues like religious and tribal sentiments already in the people of the warning politicians to be careful so that they don't punch this country into another crisis another problem may be if this is extended for a number of days a week or two adult means another constitutional crisis may develop as a result of. the tenure of the sitting president remember his term has been extended to deal with the crisis and now this election is also dragging the. course a case to be determined also by the supreme court. just many thanks for the update will await that court's decision and if you ask from now. now an adult film star

a different nation lawsuit that claims the president six arrest her oh she was on his apprentice television show there's a huge potential for embarrassment on behalf of the president where he could be deposed you could have documents they could be released as part of this they could be embarrassing details that could get leaked from these lawsuits it could be a problem our civil trial could be huge spectacle accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior have dogged the president since his election campaign two months before the election in two thousand and five tape surfaced of trump talking about groping women. to do it you can do anything whatever you want. to any of that. stormy daniels story goes one further alleging a cover up complete with physical threats allegations the white house says are without merit shall not dallas era. joe watkins is a republican political strategist and former aide to president george h.w.

bush he says the allegations were little influence on donald trump's supporters. interestingly it should but it doesn't even the evangelicals in the united states have given him a pass on these allegations from other accusers and as far as his base is concerned these are just allegations meant to the real him from his primary agenda so with his base i don't think he suffers at all i think he does just fine with his base of course that he takes a moral hit from the standpoint of how he looks in america and how he looks at the international community but from the standpoint of hurting his base hurting him with his base or impacting the election in two thousand and twenty i don't think this impacts the election in twenty twenty in any kind of a big way is very different than any other political candidate that we've had the past because we know that in the past any one incident like this would derail the candidacy of a person gary hart ran for president and one hundred eighty was running in one

looking at this particular visit from the qatari emir at the moment. i think because i think this visit is important in terms of political messaging strategizing and that certainly could tare mears looking to position himself better year russia following the saudi kings visit to moscow and in a cover two thousand and seventeen so we're looking a lot of sort of russia has you know re reemerge in the middle east as a key strategic player so obviously everybody in the in the gist is he's looking to improve their ties with russia to sort of position them better themselves better of his of the russia so this is kind of geopolitical justin is it to get russia's ear to get its attention and strong work out whether rushers on qatar side or saudi side right i think you know certainly to the g.c.c. of the americans are still more important than the russians but we can see how you know americans have been gradually withdrawn from the middle east over the past few years and russians have remerge to in the militia obviously it's very important to

to to to have that stronger relationship with moscow of course if you look at the qatari and saudi relations moscow there is like the this actor that did not take sides in the in the in the just as he crisis and so obviously both these countries all looking to rally russia's support of their cause and what about for moscow because you know we hear a lot from western governments that russia is isolated but you know from the perspective standing here in moscow and you see the number of world leaders that come trekking through here and speaking to the team uproots in it it doesn't seem that way does it yeah sure i mean certainly russia is looking to capitalize on that on the dynamics in the gulf at the moment since the beginning of this crisis you know saudi in qatar in yemen right into shells have been coming to moscow looking to strike all sorts of deals with the russians and obviously moscow sees an opportunity there to to become a stronger actor in the gulf as well so yes russia is looking to to benefit

financially politically in this in this crisis but like i said i don't think russia is ready to take sides in this conflict. what about the kind of the deliverables of this visit all we likely to actually see anything concrete happening with regards to the conflict in syria or energy deals or any of that kind of thing right. i think given the given the planning of this this is that you know the new year comes to moscow first and then in april he goes to d.c. i don't think we're going to see any any major deals here in moscow but at the same time they're discussing oil and gas industry we've seen messages statements that russian companies may be allowed to do. some work in the with qatari companies in the on gas industry that could happen as well but you know we've seen so far is that stars have been willing to invest in russia i'm talking about the russian of deal so we might see some deals here on syria i don't think so we see it's sort of a period of calm on the syrian front because the major meetings on syria happening in april so i don't think we're going to see anything and major on the. over there

more transparency they need to review and over you know totally over you know redo their entire security and privacy protocols look them over and if they want to you know keep this you know what close to two billion user accounts they have to have more transparency and perhaps more importantly you know once the users leave then the advertisers are they may even jump ship also so this is a big thing that they need to do so is that enough it's something you know that the silence right after this story broke by october was deafening because it took him a few days to come forward clearly he was figuring out what this p.r. team how to come out so they did is it enough we'll have to see they lost quite a bit of money in their market value last last week about fifty billion dollars u.s. . had a head hair on al-jazeera buses bring displaced syrians to rebel held a neighbor that contect them from the country's civil war. and dance with him

investigation so it's unclear what form it would take but there are no doubt many questions that need to be answered including what if any involvement the coach had in this there are also calls for further sanctions on the leadership team and we've been getting some mixed responses from people outside the sydney cricket ground on what sanctions should be should be replaced. you can do this in an international. stand down stay standard. but then again every team cheats. just got caught not only to go but i think the sheriff has more responsibility on this trillion sports commission said the players involved should have immediately been sent home and that there needs to be an overhaul of the culture within the sport we think that one of the good things that's come out of this situation is that the public has still a very strong message to the leadership of the sport about where they brought along
