hello i'm marianna mozzie this is the news hour live from london coming up in the next sixty minutes russia vows to retaliate as the united states and fourteen european union nations expel its diplomats over the u.k. spy attack. saudi arabia says it shot down seven missiles fired by the rebels in yemen targeting its airports. turnout is low in egypt's presidential election where the incumbent abdel fatah is interest to office. and at least sixty four people are dead and dozens of remain missing after a fire at her shopping center in siberia. and i'm tatiana sanchez in doha
9:02 pm
with all of the day's sports news including a ball tampering incident involving the australian cricket team has its major sponsors assessing their future relationship with the team. the united states and fourteen nations have expelled more than one hundred russian diplomats it's in a coordinated response to the nerve agent attack on form a double agent sergei's cripple in the united kingdom earlier this month u.s. president trump ordered sixty russian diplomats to leave including twelve attached to the united nations and he's also closed the russian consulate in seattle russia saying that it will respond in kind well this is the breakdown with more than sixteen russian officials set to be kicked out of europe france germany and poland are each expelling four diplomats ukraine which is not in a member state is also taking action there expelling thirteen russian diplomats
9:03 pm
from the country and canada and now it's the expulsion of four diplomats and said it was denying accreditation to three more that speak to our diplomatic editor james frey's who's at the united nations what further reaction has there been in the last hour. well there has been reaction in the last half hour from the russian ambassador to the united nations and from the u.s. ambassador to the united nations about all of these diplomats around the world but in particular about the diplomats here at the united nations the twelve that are really being expelled here because they're in a slightly different position from the others because the others it's up to a country to decide to expel another country's diplomats but clearly the russians that are here at the united nations the twelve that we expelled from here are not here as diplomats to a country their diplomats to an international organization that just happens to be based in the united nations it's clear the russians do not like what has happened
9:04 pm
and are going to protest it in about zero the russian ambassador to the u.n. telling our jazeera in the last half an hour it's a very unfortunate and a very unfriendly move he said that his understanding was that the diplomats here at the u.n. have just seven days before they must leave the country have been told to leave by april the second but he said he thought this was a violation of the deal between the united nations and the united states that allows the u.s. to be the host of the united nations the u.n. itself is making no comment on that the u.s. ambassador nikki haley also spoke a short time ago she told us that when we see espionage tactics taking place right here at the heart of the u.n. we can't have that and she then went in to exactly the same luck that the russian ambassador was attending they will now sit around the table and are right now sitting around the table at
9:05 pm
a regular lunch of the fifteen ambassadors of the united nations and the u.n. secretary general antonio good terrorists we've already seen paralysis on so many international problems and conflicts why how does this impact international diplomacy. well there's bound to be another phase i think the russians will strike back circle be a further tit for tat as they call it and in the end i think that's just going to make it more difficult for the international community to get around the table and talk about important issues like the war in syria like the war in yemen we've seen a deterioration of the relations between russia and the west in recent years every year seem to get worse particularly in the last four years since the annexation of crimea this is going to make things even harder for for the rats to get together and work on some of these crucial issues thank you very much ed dept matic editor
9:06 pm
james bays at the united nations well let's head to go now every challenge is standing by for us as james was saying now the russian ambassador to the u.n. says that the move to expel their diplomats is very unfortunate and very unfriendly what then retaliate what were talents rematches can we expect from the kremlin now . james was very right there when he was talking about tit for tat starts not the way the russians call it's they say that this is reciprocity and what we're going to see i think over the next few days is. mere a response essentially with the russians expelling as many or more diplomats from all the countries that have chosen to expel russian diplomats maybe we might see some extra measures taken by the russians just to keep everyone guessing now the foreign ministry here is basically coming up with a list of possible responses and they will submit that sue the president vladimir
9:07 pm
putin and he will decide what's. what measures are going to be undertaken i don't think the russians saw this level of international response coming i think that they probably assume the united kingdom with its weakened relationship with the united states under the trumpet ministration and with the difficulties that come county has with the with the european union over brics it i think it so thought the both those factors would stop london being able to assemble such a broad coalition of allies and this will come as a surprise that comes on a bad day already for russia because of this fire this horrible horrible fire in camera in siberia. we are i think getting an idea about the kind of way that russia is going to be spinning this story by something that has been said by a car of of the foreign ministry spokeswoman who says that rather than expressing
9:08 pm
sympathies with the russian people because of this awful fire in eastern russia instead western partners have chosen to expel diplomats instead this will feed into i think the russian narrative the there is an anti russian camp. in a foot in the west being fanned by london but until western countries go off to russian cash the oligarchy assets being held in london and other global financial centers i think perhaps russia might think that it's got off slightly likely ok well thank you very much roy chalons bring us all the latest on that from moscow. well now the saudi led coalition has accused the who see rebels of smuggling in weapons to yemen from iran this comes after ballistic missiles were launched across the border with the saudi military saying they shot down several missiles fired
9:09 pm
from inside yemen late on sunday a binge of aid has the latest. as the rockets rained down there were moments of panic. this is what's left of a missile fired by hutu rebels in yemen which targeted the saudi capital riyadh on sunday. and the fragment landed on an island on a busy road. a barrel range of seven ballistic missiles were intercepted by saudi arabia's air defense multiple social media users posted videos of the u.s. patriot missile defense system used by the saudi military. at least one egyptian resident was killed in the intact as forensic teams collect evidence the saudi coalition is again blaming iran for arming the hooty fighters. as you can see this is one of the other missiles fired all riyadh after the nineteenth of december all evidence shows that the regular regime has been involved in supplying the army with
9:10 pm
militias with missiles the world is facing the danger of supplying terrorist and organized crime groups with ballistic missiles there's a strong evidence including the valves that exist on the missiles these types of attacks continue despite the saudi coalition announcing in two thousand and fifteen that most of the routines ballistic arsenal was destroyed the objective is to continue to look for this guy and of missiles targeted destroyed. we believe that we destroy most of these abilities it's been three years since the coalition launched a military campaign to fight the hoodies in support of yemen's government hundreds of thousands have gathered in the capital sanaa just before the missile attack the hoody leader talked about his group's capabilities we. will use a long range drawings which have excellent military capabilities we will activate the military institutions in an unprecedented way and open up more opportunities to recruit the children and men of our people to fight. the hoodies of been cheering
9:11 pm
images of the destruction caused by saudi attacks in yemen they say their missiles are acts of revenge. these ten thousand people on all sides of being killed in yemen and millions more suffer in what the u.n. calls the worst humanitarian crisis in recent years and through all this the war continues some of the job aid out there. still ahead for you in the news thousands of people are transported across syria as government forces regain control of nearly all of eastern ghouta. we'll tell you what a top fundraiser for president trump has to do with the united arab emirates. and in sport n.b.a. teams come together to show their support for an unarmed black man in sacramento last week. egyptians have started voting for
9:12 pm
a new president and the country's three day election bought the time out has been low incumbent president abdel fatah sisi is expected to win a second after most of his challenges with drew. reports. a crucial moment for the band seeking reelection president opted for to his c.c. once a comfortable win and the huge turnout among the nearly sixty million eligible voters his supporters see him as the only man capable of leading egypt at a time when the nation faces many challenges and an impish vote i couldn't sleep from all the joy just to come here and say yes to my motherland egypt i came here to say yes to stability yes to development i came here to say yes to our military and. i will vote for sisi for the sake of the coming phase and i have a bachelor's degree in business administration and i feel like i have not given
9:13 pm
what i deserve and i feel that this coming phase will offer great things but the election has been widely seen as a false potential rivals to c.c. have either been jailed or dropped out of the race after a campaign of intimidation the only candidate allowed to run is a staunch supporter of president sisi. whose leader of the centrist party told the media he doesn't want to challenge the authority of c.c. for critics who say the more that a candidate whose role is to give the impression of a legitimate election i don't think there's any question that it's a sham i'm not aware of any serious difference of opinion among you know political scientists or human rights groups or analysts i think the point of the election is to demonstrate cc's power and his popularity this is why the government is pushing so hard for a high turnout if there's a low turnout it will be bad optics for the regime. president sisi will likely
9:14 pm
secure a second term but the general turned politician faces botting discontent over the economy and armed groups operating in the sinai peninsula the vote will last for two war days a strong turnout could indicate a growing trust in cc's leadership has about al-jazeera. our senior political analyst marwan bashar joins me in the studio now so as you were hearing there president sisi is guaranteed a victory in this election but if the turnout is low how much of a triumph can it be shocking that he's winning the elections i think a lot of people around the world are surprised the president says he will win a second term. it's really a circus of sorts and hence i think it doesn't really matter anymore what level of participation because the the level of theatrical have been so high that i think
9:15 pm
egyptians have been one bar did with this. you know a national party of sort where you know loudspeakers and t.v.'s in the press and everything is all praising the president and the democratic process in the country while everyone knows that this election is not independent it's not fair it's not free in fact it's not an election it's more of a reform random on the presidency that is conducted in a way again that is neither free nor independent nor fair and a broad question are won but we've just been talking about an escalating round between russian and western countries and great deal going on what is the international reaction likely to be to this well this is also part of a pattern let's all remember that over the last several weeks president xi of china have assured himself
9:16 pm
a vote for. you know leadership until death we have also had put in reelected yet again the first time he was elected one in one thousand nine hundred nine i believe that was one thousand years ago and he'll probably govern at least until two thousand and twenty four and we have present sisi we've known from several weeks ago that he's winning so there's a trend in those among those regimes and i would even guess the likes of person trump i think president sisi is going to be congratulated for his electoral victory remember just a few days ago president trump. congratulated president putin for his election i think definitely you will congratulate president sisi probably the first congratulation we're. come from to leave so i can be a prime minister netanyahu as well as compress of saudi arabia and others are going to be quite happy that president c.c.
9:17 pm
is reelected of course and i'm more in the more serious democratic societies like in utah prigs full there's already you dread the khud of the circus that's going on in egypt among the egyptian most is among the arabs and you know there's a this unsettling depression that no matter what happens things seem to go from bad to worse all right thank you very much. right so let's then see how the election is playing out online and cross to media producer andrea chappelle what have you been seeing and well in the first day of voting we saw dueling hashtags trending on twitter across egypt the more popular one roughly translates to we are going to finish the journey it's encouraging people to turn out and vote over the next two remaining days now lots of people are sharing clips like this one of president sisi voting on monday.
9:18 pm
and seems like this from a polling station in months or which this clip was shared on facebook certainly a family affair as you can see there. now on the other side of the spectrum another trending has tag is pushing for a different kind of choice that translates to don't go down as in don't go down to vote now seven opposition parties and more than one hundred fifty politicians have called on egyptians to stay home this week these are some of the reasons why there's the sixty thousand detainees human rights groups say that's the number of political prisoners who've been rounded up or in many cases disappeared since the military coup in two thousand and thirteen there's also the iran and son affair islands that's the two islands that egypt agreed to give to saudi arabia this next one says that it's for our livelihood that's to highlight egypt's ongoing economic and social challenges and this last one is for what many see as a inability of failure to maintain security in the country there was
9:19 pm
a car bombing in alexandria on saturday that killed two people including a police officer that was a big topic on social media in the lead up to the vote but the government says it is working to address this issue egypt's military launched a new offensive against armed groups last week in several parts of the country and the egyptian armed forces have released this footage on facebook of guards outside polling stations to reassure the public they're promising to create a safe setting for egyptians to cast their votes now social media platforms remain available in egypt so we are able to get a variety of views from the arab world's most populous country now the same cannot be said for the news media within egypt because more than five hundred websites have been blocked in an ongoing crackdown on independent media rights groups say that this list these ongoing bans violate freedom of expression and run contrary to the egyptian constitution you'll see lots of cats are linked outlets on the list al-jazeera has been banned from egypt since two thousand and thirteen when the
9:20 pm
authorities started jailing its journalists accusing the network of links to so-called terror groups and for what the c.c. government labeled as pro muslim brotherhood coverage. now ken roth at human rights watch says these actions to silence critics in the lead up to the election show how repression and censorship do not translate into support and how president sisi is in his words running scared well one egyptian in geo worker responded to him saying that there are dozens of local organizations and hundreds of reporters monitoring this election so this is just one of many aspects of this election that continues to be debated on social media and we'd love to hear your thoughts on egypt selection you can share your views with us on what's up or telegram the number is right there on your screen that's plus nine seven four five zero one triple one four nine or you can message me directly i'm. all right now to syria where government forces have regained control of nearly all of the east and go to the area was once one of the last was one of the last strongholds close to damascus the

united nations has been reacting off to donald trump ordered sixty russian officials to leave including twelve attached to the united nations. i think you're seeing an increasingly. move of bad judgment by russia and when we see these espionage tactics that are taking place right here at the heart of the u.n. which we have that and this is really not just us but multiple countries saying all of these actions have to stop this is not what we do. in any other place and it can't be acceptable for you to do this unfortunately russia is now being held accountable for a lot of things and they have a decision and. that's very unfortunate very unfriendly. diplomats. expelled from here that they will have to leave by the second by the second wave now investigators looking into a fire that killed sixty four people in russia say a security guard switched off the building's fire alarm system exits were also

and turkey have grown increasingly strained so moving on now the israeli government's been given until monday to provide new details of its plan to deport more than forty thousand african refugees the supreme court set a deadline after suspending the program at a hearing earlier this month migrants and asylum seekers were offered a choice earlier this year deportation or jail. harry fawcett reports from west jerusalem. among the inmates of saharan imprisoned deep in israel's southern negev desert are dozens of eritrean and sudanese men who have in the narrowest sense chosen to be there instead of deportation to a third country known to be either uganda or wondered what are her son says the inmates have made the right choice he accepted a deal to leave israel for uganda in twenty fourteen but instead found himself delivered to sudan the country he'd fled now he's made it to uganda away studying law but says direct deportees from israel have their documents taken at the airport

leaving them unprotected no one is willing to fight or die for this because rates in israel there's at least there's activists and there's a lot of resistance. israel's government is trying to remove forty thousand africans mostly sudanese and eritrean who entered from egypt before a border fence was completed four years ago the first phase of the detention or deportation policy targets single men but for now it's been frozen pending a decision by israel supreme court on monday the train was running very quickly we at least stopped that seagull coco v.v. is one of those behind the legal petition against the policy she doubts the government has a defensible deal with rwanda to show the court and hopes the freeze will continue but i think it's going to be very hard for the supreme court now to turn this around and say without an agreement without seeing an agreement this can go on israel's prime minister though is determined to press ahead last week he said unrestricted african migration would be more dangerous than terrorism is on argued

that israel has the right to expel people he calls illegal infiltrators where somebody is granted asylum status he can be expelled but not to the country where he cannot be returned in this case but if another country is willing to accept him it's perfectly legal under international law. it's an argument that holds little weight for. who fled forced service in the eritrean army but how does asylum claim rejected in israel he says neither rwanda nor uganda offers the safe haven that should be his right under international law let so i do this or to stay in a prison to stay in a prison i prefer to stay in a body that instead of risk of death. i don't to give up also i don't lose hope i don't give up. in the short term such hopes depend on the next decision made by israel supremes court but more broadly they rely on the outcome of what's been a vociferously national debate about whether african refugees now deserve the same
