this was down to security reasons really when kim jong un's father and grandfather came to china their visits were only ever confirmed after they had left the country so i think it was mainly for security reasons in this era of political and diplomatic surprises we now have another xi jinping has demonstrated that like president trump he too is capable of surprises we have to remember that kim jong un and president xi jinping have not really been on speaking terms ever since kin jong un came to power relations have gone from good to basically extremely testy and of course china has been the country that's been in forcing sanctions against north korea that it's almost certainly taken a toll on the north korean economy and it of course may be one of the reasons why kim jong un has come to china now now with these pictures of president xi jinping

and kim jong un together shaking hands smiling we're being led to believe that these two allies are once more close again that normal service in a sense has now been resumed china has really rolled out the red carpet albeit a red carpet that was rolled out during complete secrecy kim was given a full welcoming ceremony with military honors inside the great hall of the people and of course this was his first visit outside of north korea and the fact that his meeting was with president xi jinping of course gives enormous face to china's leader or we did see a lengthy statements come out about the meeting from the chinese state run news agency but what was at the heart of these discussions do you think. i think virtually jingping wanted to know what kim's strategy would be during his upcoming summit with president donald trump i think you know china regards anything

that happens on the north korean peninsula involving nuclear weapons missile testing as you know a direct threat to its national security and of course china and north korea are our allies they have a military pact that binds them together so china feels justified in instances like this to find out exactly what the north korean leader's thinking is right now it's almost certain that kim jong un was summoned to beijing but what has she jinping offered president kim in return was it the threat of more sanctions or has he offered him something something tangible i guess that'll become you know apparent in the in the coming days but certainly it does demonstrate that china does have sway over north korea because in the past of course during recent years when north korea has carried out missile tests china has always given the impression look we only have so much control over north korea will now we know that china has in many ways absolute control over north korea in some matters ok adrian thank you let's

cross now to kathleen of arches joining us from seoul to tell us what the reaction has been from south korea about this visit. well the government seems to be seeing it quite positively the unification ministry says that any improvement in development in the relations between china and north korea ahead of course of the upcoming summit between the south korean president and kim jong un and also plans for the summit between donald trump and kim jong un are conducive to addressing the issues on the korean peninsula including denuclearization and ultimately peace and the china's top diplomat. due to come to seoul tomorrow to brief south korean officials on this visit that visit of young was supposed to actually happen originally last week and now it's been moved presumably to allow for this visit and the announcement of the visit to happen and to allow young to

come here and talk to the south korean government about what was discussed between kim and she and of course the south korean government is pressing ahead with its own plans for a summit there's a high level into korean meeting show jeweled for tomorrow at the d.m.z. at the border between north and south korea to hammer out some of the details so i think broadly south korea is still cautiously optimistic about the atmosphere of peace that seems to have developed here on the korean peninsula and would hope to continue this engagement and dialogue with the government of kim jong il and how significant is it that president xi has accepted an invitation to visit pyongyang. you know it would be significant to see visit north korea of course this is significant that kim jong un has come to china the first visit as adrian mentioned that he has made outside of north korea since becoming leader in twenty two thousand and eleven the first time that he has met another world leader and comes

amid this flurry of diplomatic activity leading up to these summits of course the question has been why now why has kim jong un turned from this provocative atmosphere of launching missiles regularly to proposing the meeting between donald trump and kim jong and between the two koreas of course there's a suggestion that perhaps sanctions that have been imposed are starting to bite and that is what's forcing kim jong un to the table but on the other hand the narrative that certainly north korea wants to promote is that kim jong un is more confident now that he has solidified his position and his nuclear and missile weapons program and he can come to the table be seen he wants to be seen as a world leader that can negotiate with the likes of xi jinping and donald trump confident in the knowledge that he has this missile program that he has built up there's been some commentary also in the south korean media that perhaps north

korea might be turning more pro-american certainly china would not like to see that so the other question being asked is is kim jong un here trying to play china off against the u.s. so it will certainly be interesting to see developments with these plans for perhaps she can ping rather to visit north korea and the two summits that we're expecting in april and may during sure will ok kathy novak thank you now the white house has released the statements about the historic meeting it says the u.s. sees this development as further evidence that our campaign of maximum pressure is creating the appropriate atmosphere for a dialogue with north korea. there's been another round of blame trading among un security council members as they discuss the failure of their call for a cease fire to take effect in syria they agreed on february twenty fourth to call for a thirty day break in hostilities it's allowed some extra aid to reach people but
