welcome to the program north korea's leader has met china's president on his first foreign trip since taking power seven years ago kim jong un's secretive meeting for the first time we've xi jinping was revealed after it happened chinese state media reports kim saying that he's open to giving up his nuclear program his all china correspondent adrian brown with the latest from beijing. and so he was here after a. chinese state controlled media waited until kim jong un was back home before confirming what officials had tried so hard to deny just a day earlier in the great hall of the people kim jong un and his wife were welcomed like old friends by president xi jinping. a brief greeting in korean was the only time kim's voice was heard. appearance is important at times like this kim looked like an old style communist leader where is she opted for

a business suit. the wives of both men were present during most of the photo opportunities. this visit was powerful symbolism for both men but especially for president xi now the first world leader to meet kim and a reminder that china still holds sway over its neighbor and ally. it's not clear what motivated kim jong un to come to beijing now and whether he was offered any incentive to do so but china remains north korea's only ally so it's fair to assume the president she might have wanted to know what kim's negotiating strategy will be during the summit is expected to hold with president trump it's a visit that would have seemed unimaginable just a few months ago when a chill in relations deepened over kim's refusal to halt the development of his nuclear weapons and long range missiles at an exhibition showcasing some of china's technological achievements the message appeared to be we can help you with all of

this if you behave china's leaders are fond of metaphors at a lavish banquet she told his guest that in the beautiful season of spring everything comes to life kim replied with another metaphor i believe our meeting will yield abundant fruit that could mean making good on his commitment to give up nuclear weapons what the fruits of spring were apparent in the garden of the state guest house where friendship also seemed to blossom she accepted an invitation to visit north korea and told kim he was welcome to visit china now and then the visitors left happy adrian brown al-jazeera beijing. now the u.s. president has weighed in on kim jong un's visit to china they're saying and we quote received a message last night from xi jinping of china that his meeting with kim jong un went very well and that kim looks forward to his meeting with me in the meantime

and unfortunately maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost that said the situation on the korean peninsula has changed rapidly over the past year north korea conducted its sixth nuclear bomb test and launched intercontinental ballistic missiles over japan the us president and north korean leader exchange angry rhetoric trump promised fire and fury or kim threatened attacks on u.s. territory but then there was an apparent olive branch kim's new year's speech over talks with the south and participation in the twenty eighteen winter olympics delegation including his sister kim jong traveled across the demilitarized zone and this helped set up plans meetings between the north and south with pyongyang and washington now kim has made his secretive visit to beijing it's his first time out of the country as we said since taking power in two thousand and eleven now robert kelly is an associate professor in the department of political science and

diplomacy and national university he says it'll take a lot to get north korea to abandon its nuclear weapons. it would be amazing if they were to give them up for anything other than a massive concession from the american and south korean side probably something really extreme like the end of the american south korean alliance more likely is that they'll allow build like caps on nuclear weapons or on missile count or something like that but i would be amazed if they would just agree to go to zero they would ask for something enormous i think the sanctions have played a role i think the two certain set right we don't know right because the north koreans don't tell us a great deal on the north koreans don't give us proper trade statistics but there's a fair amount of anecdotal evidence flowing out of northeastern china and north korea to suggest that the sanctions have begun to bite and we have heard the north korean media talking about sanctions and sanctions relief more and more if only to say you know that we don't need it and stuff like that but the fact they're talking about it is suggested. i think from here the issue is that north koreans now have these weapons and they feel like they can negotiate right they've probably got the

ability to strike the united states so why not now that you have a one and see what you can get i think the first meeting the one between going on and seoul in april that's the most important one right i mean that really i mean ultimately this is a korean issue right the chinese the americans the russians japanese you know we're all kind of involved in how but shakes out but it's really ultimately this is a korean issue the two koreas really need to work out their own fate as well and should be right that one will set a lot of constraints on what trump has a lot to offer the north koreans if the south koreans come back with some really good deal some kind of do nuclearization in exchange for something or other you know constraints on the u.s. alliance south korea or something like that if the president of the group bring someone back like that back and he can sell it to the south korean public that will put a lot of constraints on what donald trump can do right so the first one is more important but the trump one is getting more i think attention because it's trump though the u.s. ambassador to the united nations is blaming both the syrian government and russia for what she called a slaughter in east and he says despite a cease fire the u.n.

security council should be ashamed of the continued bombing of the rebel held on clay. russia will stop at nothing to use its permanent seat on this council to shield itself bashar al assad from even the faintest criticism and we cannot take these actions because instead of calling out how assad russia and iran made a mockery of our calls for a cease fire too many members of this council wanted to wait this is a travesty. this should be a day of shame for every member of this council and it should be a lesson about what happens when we focus on fleeting displays of unity instead of on what's right. well russia's ambassador accused curity council members of wasting time instead of taking action against armed groups in eastern guta. some members of the security council prefer to squander time on letters and

rhetoric with us now to claims against our country probably this is to conceal their own willingness to do something constructive in implementing the cease fire resolution and mind that the groups they sponsor will stay on the subject turkish troops are close to taking another northern syrian town as part of its offensive against kurdish y p g fighters now they are closing in on tolerably far to near freezing turkish troops to control of a frame ten days ago following a two month operation the turkish president recipe for the one has said his forces will continue to move east as far as man beach to push out the y.p. g. fighters who say or who he says are terrorists and has more from istanbul. turkish officials have told me that white pages withdrawing from tel rafah but they underlined that there is no military operation as an offering on the other hand why p.g. has denied all these statements that they are withdrawing from tel rafah at the town which they conquered from the syrian opposition groups in early two thousand and

sixteen what we understand is that there is a deal between russia and turkey over this strategic town of northern aleppo but this time told her father is going to be more different compared to our friend because often there were boots on the ground at the f.s.a. and the turkish military but intel are far it is more about the plastic and political talks between two sides both russia and turkey also turkish foreign ministry under secretary who will be in washington d.c. on march thirty to talk about by literally issues and also about the ongoing operations in northern syria so probably we are going to be hearing more detailed information within the coming days about the strategic town of. norden it is very strategic for all parties in syria because it is a strategic transition straight across syria so if you take tel referred under control you are controlling the east west route also the area between aleppo and.
