but just when he's been feeling saying. we just don't know yet where the lines when drawn between what can be said and what conduct where the lines when drawn between what can be said and what conduct that. some journalists decided to sacrifice their integrity for outside polling the media opinion the listening post based time on al-jazeera. the nature of news as it breaks this was a great election about it was going to win but it was about by how much with detailed coverage the syrian civil war most of them said to state what is new or different is that each day some people will live until to morrow so many innocent people will die from around the world the bats and balls are several years old the really good players to end up creating a cricket academy and maybe one day play for the national team.

i am. and live from studio team here al-jazeera headquarters in doha i'm fully back to go welcome to the news great she didn't bring not donald trump becomes a first world leader to meet kim jong il in north korea's leader discuss ways to give up his nuclear weapons and is said to be looking forward to his upcoming meeting with president trump will explore what kim's visit to beijing could mean for the u.s. also on the great ethiopian moxon ethnic milestone the ruling party has elected abi ahmed as its new chairman paving the way for him to become the first a woman prime minister despite being ethiopia's largest ethnic group feel more almost have long complained about persecution so will the next prime minister help unify the country and in the long running border dispute between chile and bolivia goals all the way to the world or to the bolivian president himself was at the

hague to petition international court of justice to force today to grant is country direct access to the pacific ocean and take a look at the case and the impact on relations between the two countries. to win a second term after three days of voting comes to a close in egypt's presidential election i mean to schapelle a look at how cash handles government threats on pop culture impact voter turnout. here with the news great live on air and streaming online for you tube facebook live and at al-jazeera dot com thank you for joining us after much speculation it's been confirmed that north korean leader kim jong un has made his first foreign trip since assuming power in twenty seven meeting china's president xi jinping in beijing the visit has been described as a success by the chinese were the two leaders reportedly discussing ways for north

korea to give up its nuclear weapons kim jong un's trip to beijing was a first. potential meetings with some of the world's most powerful leaders is due to attend a summit with south korean president one j a next month and will later meet president donald trump in what would be an historic first encounter between is sitting u.s. president and in north korean leader or reacting to claims historic visit to beijing president trump tweeted this early on when say received a message last night from xi jinping of china that his meeting with kim jong un went very well and that came looks forward to his meeting with me in the meantime and unfortunately maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all costs he goes on to say for years then through many administrations everyone said that peace and denuclearization of the korean peninsula was not even a small possibility now he says there's a good chance that came jiang on will do what is right for his people and for humanity look forward to our meeting. there as agent brown has this report now from

beijing wrapping up all the latest developments for xi jinping this was a diplomatic triumph he not u.s. president donald trump now the first world leader to meet kim jong il. chinese state controlled media waited until kim was back home before confirming what officials to try so hard to deny just a day earlier. in the great hall of the people kim and his wife will welcome like old friends appearance is important at times like this. she opted for a business suit where is kim stuck to the look favored by his father and grandfather the wives of both men were present during most of the photo opportunities. visits like this are all about symbolism for she it served as a reminder that china still holds sway over its neighbor and intends to be at the

center of diplomatic efforts to achieve a nuclear free korean peninsula. it's not clear what made him come to beijing or indeed what incentives he may have been offered to do so but china remains north korea's only real friend and ally so it's fair to assume the president xi jinping might want to know what kim's negotiating strategy will be during his upcoming summit with president trump. and kim's visit made it possible for china to know what north korea will be talking about to south korea and the united states in his discussions on the nuclearization china has also learned what north korea's demands will be which will help china. india it's a visit that would have seemed unimaginable just a few months ago where north korea was ignoring chinese appeals for restraint at an exhibition showcasing some of china's technological achievements the message appeared to be we can help you with all of this if you behave. china's leaders are
6:06 pm
fond of metaphors that a lavish banquet she told his guest that in the beautiful season of spring everything comes to life kim replied i believe our meeting will yield abundant fruit that could mean making good on his commitment to give up nuclear weapons the fruits of spring were apparent in the garden of the state guesthouse where friendship also seemed to blossom she accepted an invitation to visit north korea and told him he was welcome to visit china again the visitors left happy adrian brown al jazeera beijing well let's take a closer look now at the relationship between beijing and pyongyang china's support for north korea dates back to the korean war in the one nine hundred fifty s. when its troops flooded the korean peninsula to help its northern since the war china has lent political and economic backing to north korea's leader is china's pyongyang's most important trading partner and main source of food and energy
6:07 pm
historically china has opposed international sanctions on north korea in the hope of avoiding regime collapse and an influx of refugees across their one thousand one hundred kilometer border but strains in the relationship began to surface when pyongyang tested a nuclear weapon in october two thousand and six and beijing supported a u.n. security council resolution which impose sanctions on north korea well let's speak now to international security expert jim walsh who is a research associate at the massachusetts institute of technology security studies is live from boston very good to have you with us on the news great what do you think motivated kim jong un's visit to beijing now to meet xi jinping first. well i think it's a good sign and it's a good thing because if we're going to have a major summit and if the summit is going to go well then all the parties have to be prepared for it the north koreans should be talking to their friends the chinese asking for their help asking for she's assessment of trump remember trump and she
6:08 pm
had a very successful summit of their own and she is in a position to tell chairman kim what that was like to tell them about donald trump but also to for that a chance for the chinese to say hey if you do this we will do that so it seems to me this is very good news and if we if it was the opposite if they hadn't met that would be a very bad sign because you would have a kim going into a very important meeting without full preparation so i welcome the some very good news you say jim this is being portrayed as a diplomatic triumph for the chinese president there was a lot of diplomatic maneuvering a few weeks ago involving the u.s. south korea and other countries not necessarily china making this meeting between xi jinping and kim jong un. even more important even more significant today do you think china is back in the game now. oh it always has been the game it always will be in the game i don't buy this analysis that i've
6:09 pm
seen in the u.s. newspapers write that it's sort of a zero sum game and this is a win for she and a loss for trump i think that's all baloney you know this agreement a positive outcome to this summit only happens if china's support is is china is involved and giving its support there is no agreement north korea is not going to make an agreement on its own it's the weakest power for it to have confidence to make a real agreement it will need the backing of its ally china so china is going to be part of this no matter what and that's a good thing not a bad thing when you say that you don't agree with the view that china is in a stronger position than it was maybe a few weeks a few months ago what about the u.s. position going into this meeting between donald trump and kim jong un will the u.s. be in a position of strength or weakness when donald trump and kim jong un meet and what is the u.s. strategy going to be going into this meeting given all the tensions we've seen at the state department recently. you know i think the u.s.
6:10 pm
faces a lot of challenges first of all it's not a lot of time to pull together a strategy now you know there have been all these papers and studies written over the years and they can sort of consult that but you know the president is not known for someone who does a lot of homework he's known as someone who sort of wings it and goes by his gut so that's a little concerning it's the first time ever that north koreans and americans would have sat down together like this right and as someone who is who has sat down with north koreans i can tell you practice helps it's it's better to have had a little experience under your belt and then finally as you alluded to there are a lot of empty chairs the u.s. does not have an ambassador in south korea it does not have a confirmed assistant secretary of state for asia pacific we have a new secretary of state coming in you know lots of moving parts so i am concerned about it but at the end of the day with these two very unusual leaders what will matter will be those two guys how they react to each other and whether they can
6:11 pm
form some sort of bond and make a big commitment if they can do that all things are possible if they can't then we're going to enter a very dangerous phase and we heard in beijing today a pledge to denuclearize the korean peninsula which i imagine is encouraging going into this possible meeting between trump and kim jong un do you think out of the sanctions and the sanctions alone have been the factor that have changed the tone of north korea in recent months. i doubt that very seriously i mean i think the sanctions have had some effect but far more limited effect i've conducted a study with a colleague at harvard where we interviewed the north korean defectors and we didn't find much evidence that the sanctions mattered a lot i think there are a lot of things that are that are going on here but you know frankly we don't know what kim's intentions are this is the most opaque country in the world and i will remind you it's important keep in mind here that it's very good that the north
6:12 pm
koreans say that they are endorsing the concept of denuclearization right a have done this before it all depends on the conditions that they're saying they're willing to denuclearize but there are things they want in the past they've wanted a peace treaty they wanted a withdrawal of u.s. troops from the been insula x. y. and z. so saying you want to nuclearization is great but it depends very much on the conditions under which that would happen i want to ask question for you jim and i want to put to you a comment here from one of our us on facebook live jamaal who says president xi jinping is currently top leader and a man with political with them wisdom rather he does have my respect and you think being is emerging as a top leader now in the world and you know signing perhaps see us president. i think this is a little overwrought i mean she is china's rising power in the international relations expert will tell you that its economy is growing and it's an important
6:13 pm
player in asia which is sort of the ground zero for a lot of economic growth but you know there are some problems that china has and it really hasn't been out on the world stage that much and i would remind the viewer that she jinping just announced that he was going to centrally be leader for life so it sounds to me like a john is taking a very authoritarian turn so i think it's a mixed bag and in any case yes china is important yes the u.s. is important it has the biggest military and the biggest economy in the world none of these problems of particularly the north korean problem are going to be so solved without all the parties if you take the u.s. out of this it's not going to be solved if you take china out of it it's not going to be solved and it's not a competition here the reality is we're trying to achieve a policy goal of denuclearization and that is in the interests of both china and the united states thank you so much for sharing your views with us jim walsh of m.i.t. joining us live from boston very good to have you with us on the news great and as
6:14 pm
always all you need to know about the north korean nuclear crisis on our web site al-jazeera dot com a very good explainer here about how it all started the history of the koreas with the war in the one nine hundred fifty s. north korea's nuclear and missile tests and if you scroll down a net a bit further down you can find out more information about north korea its trading partners scroll down a bit more and i see its exports and also its economy how they've been handling being basically out of the international community all this information on our website at al-jazeera dot com to help you understand the story even better. let's move on to other world news now an ethiopian is ruling coalition has picked as its new leader baiting the way for him to become the country's first ever overall more prime minister the ethiopia's largest ethnic group but they've long complained of the marginalize. the head of the ethnic party within the ruling coalition he was born in the city of aggarwal in armenia and comes from
6:15 pm
a mixed christian and muslim family the forty two year old is believed to have a huge amount of support among the overall more youth many of whom have been active in untied government protests but critics have also pointed to his background in the military and as director of the information network security agency which has been accused of spying on ethiopian dissidents as evidence that he's not a reformer. international community is closely watching the developments in ethiopia it's africa's second most populous nation and many are hoping the appointment of a room or prime minister will help address some of the demands of recent protests the government declared a state of emergency last month after the sudden resignation of prime minister. he said it was to make way for reforms it's a second in two years if you o.p.'s coalition government had been facing pressure from two of the largest ethnic groups the oromo and the m horace both say the minority to agree ethnic group has too much influence in the country the president
6:16 pm
of protests led to a heavy crackdown hundreds of people were killed and tens of thousands of arrested along with a six month state of emergency which was imposed back in october of two thousand and sixteen to grains account for just about six percent of the population but they have dominated politics and the security forces in ethiopia it's been that way since a group of guerrilla fighters led by the to graham's overthrew or marxist regime in one thousand nine hundred one and took power but this has created a great deal of resentment in recent years among ethiopia's ethnic groups when i speak to. in. frankfurt germany for she is the editor in chief of the added standard and she's with us thank you so much for dolly for being with us so how significant do you think this appointment is beyond marking an ethnic milestone for ethiopia do you see in changing the ways of the ruling party. significant it is yes
6:17 pm
but when we talk about changing the ruling party disses changed out there really prior to brought in order to redeem itself because it has been facing a deprived her and in fact a for a collapse within the last few months is so they have finally begin to reckon with is this danger and that is taking the party down i know it was the country and this is a mystery that the party decided to take in order to redeem itself and in order to become relevant in the ice of the constituency in the narrowest of these european people in the right so it's significant thing that's we've got to help us understand a bit what's been happening within this ruling e.p. r.d.f. party as you say they've been quite a bit of wrangling you have the conservatives of course who want to maintain the status quo and the reformists who feel the country is heading in the wrong direction which of these two parents right now in the wooden party is in the
6:18 pm
strongest position well i'm afraid to say that they're the ones that are advocating for the status quo are still having sort of picture called during the political infrastructure in the country however the you know the popular protests that have been going on for but the last three years have prepared some of the reformist groups particularly it was in the a p.t.o. and the ag and. the state to come to the forefront of its priorities. so however they still have to run right i certain said it was and continue to become relevant again us the ones that are advocating for the status quo some analysts have pointed to a. background as evidence that he's not a before my that is part of the establishment but these appointment is being welcomed by the people is it not they've long complained of being marginalized and
6:19 pm
persecuted but now they have one of their own at the top is going to make a difference see you think as far as the protests we've seen in recent months and recent years in ethiopia where that's that's going to significantly depend on the actions that the prime minister elect is going to be taking on he saw and yes he comes from the home or background and he is i would say the first prime minister to identify himself as a new home as well so this has given some real hope for the room a constituency in that country but i don't think there are more people are going to settle because and romo is occupying the palace now. they will be settling for that it all depends on what kinds of reforms he's going to be conducting and if they're referring to start his own party have put forward and how much of a livery woodgate executing the c four might and there are more people who will be
6:20 pm
worked through over dustings and. they will be back again into the streets if if they see that he will be hated to the room thank you so much for that speaking to us about the situation in ethiopia. with the added standard she is joining us from frankfurt there in germany apologies for that dodgy skype connection and there's been quite some conversation online about this on twitter the situation in ethiopia the fact that abby ahmed is from the protest stricken orania region has according to many its own significance some say it brings the possibility that he may not ignore the demands of the protesters yet this all depends on different factors one man tweeted this if the new prime minister doesn't become an agent of legal and political reform while responding to the demands of the protesters in the spirit of making them feel loyal and responsible citizens of ethiopia their ambivalence of
6:21 pm
dismantling or reforming the empire remain a destabilizing factor another we're tweet here which says we welcome the election of abi ahmed as leader we hope he will be a source of stability for the country and that he will guard and protect security and one more comment coming to us on facebook and live that says he will not unify the country at all every ethnic group or start reuniting with their respective people on the other side came to power by leading secretly their three year unrest by his own ethnic group if you're in ethiopia would love to hear from you on the story connect with us on social media using the hashtag aging is great and there's a very interesting opinion piece about the current political situation in ethiopia on al-jazeera dot com our i know gives his view on the latest state of emergency that was imposed he says its purpose is not to protect the constitutional order but to silence the voices calling for change it's an interesting perspective read it on al-jazeera dot com. all right time now for

a.j. english to say. a genius great we're also on whatsapp and telegram a past one seven four five a one triple one four nine all the different ways to get in touch on the bottom right of your screen right now moving on is the final day of voting in egypt's presidential election the polls are expected to close in the next you hours next four hours to be for size the incumbent abdel fattah el-sisi is course away in a second term his only competitor has been a vocal supporter of the president all the other candidates withdrew after being. wrested pressured to drop out of the race prominent government critics have also called for a boycott of the vote now joining us is mohamed a master who is chair of the journalism program at the doha graduate institute thank you so much for being with us again today course we know we think we know what the result is going going to be but the turnout figures is what we're really waiting for do you think egyptians are going out to vote these past three days if they know what the result is going to be anyway well it's interesting because the
6:33 pm
government to sort of been pulling out all the stops to try to get people to go go and vote right they've threatened fines several government owned corporations have threatened to dock paychecks in april including egypt air the state owned airline police officers have been going door to door in some of the governor it's and you know sort of encouraging people to go vote they've been paying people between three dollars and nine dollars to vote they've been offering food rations to people who show proof that they voted so clearly the government is obsessed with this final voter turnout if they are nervous about the turnout that he gets less than the forty percent turnout that he got in the past election how big of a blow would that be to him you know i think it i think it to be a big a big blow he's looking for sort of a popular mandate to sort of with the legitimate his his rule right and cement his his popularity and also cement his efforts to probably go for
6:34 pm
a third term to amend the constitution and go for go for a third term so if he comes out with say i don't know thirty percent or thirty five percent voter turnout that's really bad optics in front of the gyptian population i think it would be pretty bad news now having said that what are people really going to do i mean it's not as though there's a democratic process in egypt that people can participate in it's not as though people can go into the streets and protest people who have done that have been either killed on mass or arrested on mass he has emphasized security and stability in his first term and his die. and so again throughout this campaign saying that he's the man that will bring back stability and security is egypt is that what matters to egypt today what do you see. his challenges ahead in the next four years what is he going to have to deal with and what do egypt want from the president right well there's no question first of all that egypt does face a problem with with terrorism right we've seen hundreds of attacks carried out in the last just in the last few years so that is one of cc's primary challenges the
6:35 pm
problem is that ccs counterterrorism strategies haven't seemed to work in fact egypt is suffering from greater levels of instability now than it has any point in its modern history in terms of his other challenges i think the other big one is economic unicef says that close to thirty percent of egyptians live in poverty and about ten million children live in poverty the coat the country has been ravaged by skyrocketing inflation it's making life very difficult for the common egyptian to just make ends meet so that's going to be his major challenge going forward now we've discussed the failure of these past four years at length these past three days as the voting has been happening in egypt but has it all been negative musri is there something positive out of this for you this last well look see see has been able to improve some of the macro economic indicators on the you know the
6:36 pm
national economy so for instance g.d.p. has gone up egypt's foreign reserves have gone up from one thousand billion dollars to about forty two billion dollars now there are some sort of structural explanations for that and it goes back to the i.m.f. the i.m.f. loan and it relates to the inflation problem so that's not necessarily all positive news but if you're asking for something positive i guess that that would be the one thing that i that i could point to unfortunately egypt has regressed significantly socially politically and economically in the last few years few years so there isn't a lot that we can point to thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us mamata musri. the divine state of graduate studies joining us here on the news great well let's not take a look at the conversation online and a ship asocial media producer is an egypt desk all this week what are you seeing online and to about the election well that turnout in this election is being closely watched for an indication of egyptians trust in the president local media dominated by pro-government voices have portrayed voting as an obligation and the only way to prevent foreign forces from sowing instability regardless of the choice
6:37 pm
of candidates many egyptians vote to carry out a basic civic duty lead them to the full but we have to cast your ballot we have to express our opinion and make a difference we've seen our neighbors suffering instability and turmoil but we have to build the thank god the most important thing less than half of eligible voters participated four years ago handing sisi his first election victory with nearly ninety seven percent of the vote if you were voters participated in the last election in two thousand and fourteen compared to two thousand and twelve when mohamed morsi became egypt's first democratically elected president egypt's election authority said sisi received ten million more votes in twenty fourteen than morsi did in two thousand and twelve so forty seven point five percent and twenty fourteen fifteen percent turn down twenty twelve check out this number from two thousand and five only twenty three percent of eligible voters cast ballots in that race when former president mubarak faced a challenger from the god party that's the same party as sees only challenger mystify mussa. now pop culture has played
6:38 pm
a big role in getting people to vote in egypt if you look on any of the prominent pro-government hashtags for the election you'll probably see videos of people dancing outside of polling stations playing songs by popular artists encouraging them to participate well the song bush threats or good omen omen rather was released for the twenty fourteen election cycle but it continues to be played outside many polling stations it's a massive hit that's racked up more than two hundred eighty six million views and it appears that american election observers became hooked by the catchy tunes as well as several videos of u.s. officials dancing outside polling stations have gone viral on egyptian social media and that's something that has irked some of the online observers a cairo based writer and filmmaker here calling it a celebration of the unopposed triumph of a military dictator now the u.s. embassy in cairo says that as americans they are very impressed by the enthusiasm and patriotism of egyptian voters but you also have commentators such as while
6:39 pm
iskandar who say that western complicity and partnership in crimes against egyptians are the most important story about the elections now the state news agency has reminded the gyptian that failing to vote is an offense that's punishable by a fine of up to twenty eight dollars other threats and enticements have featured prominently in foreign news coverage this week the new york times says it's seen people being paid from three dollars to nine dollars just to vote now as we heard earlier the international monetary fund says nearly thirty percent of egyptians are living below the poverty line so that's a lot of money for anyone living on less than a dollar a day and there are millions of egyptians in this category now government officials in several areas have promised voters improve services such as electricity and sanitation the wall street journal has added how other regional governments within egypt have offered to build new playgrounds nurseries and event halls in districts with the highest voter turnout and these kind of tactics were also used in the mubarak era promising infrastructure for votes and the washington post is reporting that. vendors the street vendors union in cairo was threatened with raids and

in killing of an african-american man in louisiana video of thirty seven year old out in sterling's death caused national outrage and helped build momentum for the black eyes matter movement mike hanna has this report from washington. the death of alton sterling was caught on mobile phone video he was shot by officer blaine salamone injuring a struggle. yeah the opposite did not destroy his weapon but did wrestle sterling to the ground the state department of justice left the investigation to the louisiana attorney general who's now announced the two offices will not be charged as in his view they attempted to make a lawful arrest this decision was not taken lightly. we came to this conclusion after countless hours of reviewing the evidence gather it turned over to us by the u.s. department of justice the dead man's family is outraged by the decision he was murdered

. he was murdered. and. yes there is no those being protesting the similar shooting of stefan clock in sacramento last week we'll hope for a different time to come. the twenty three year old was shot by officers responding to reports of a man smashing car windows they chased him cornered him in his grandmother's backyard and paul had twenty shots fired. no weapon was found on the did man only a phone. and in an attempt to calm the community the second mento police chief says the investigation into the shooting will be supervised by the california department of justice not local law enforcement officials as our city's police chief who has lived in this community my entire life i'm dedicated to making sure that we gather all the facts conduct a thorough investigation and promise we will continue to be transparent about the

process another major difference in approach the body camera footage in this case was released within days that in the sterling case has still not been made public it was definitely encouraging that the chief of police is. the attorney general to take the lead here and all we can hope for is that this is this investigation is going to be conducted fairly and transparently the question is whether this is indeed a more transparent and proactive approach that could signal the beginning of the end to the ongoing cycle of police shootings and consequent protest with a funeral planned for thursday the answer could well lie in the reaction of the tens of thousands that continue to protest and were in the death of yet another african american at the hands of police mike hanna al-jazeera washington. well the movement black eyes matter has played out a lot on social media especially following incidents of police shootings in the

last few years how high art has been following the latest discussions on line with well people are definitely looking about and i'm going to show you a list that should come up in any moment and it shows names of black people that have been killed by police near and that's being shared on social media including at the top there if you can see alton and stephanie crock and there's the survey keeps going on but they're sure these are just some of the names because one they're the ones that made it into mainstream media but the list actually does go on now people from different backgrounds there have been coming together online in solidarity just there is one of them he's encouraging the sikh community to march for steffan krog but scenes from sacramento city hall were posted and shared as well online. those themes of protesters interrupting a special city council meeting on quat death and they held up their mobile phones and chanted this is not a weapon a reminder of cop being unarmed and holding just

a mobile phone at the time of the shooting now stuffing clocks brother took his concerns to city hall as well. stefan sing caulks entrancing his brother's name the meeting was cut short as a result but not before he spoke out against city leaders and the treatment of its residents. meeting get the window for kick you out here get through until you get the idea or sit. down to a shot. you are you doing yes the mayor and. the outcome of the. now i know you want to talk to me the chief of police got my brother killed here he shows no emotion at all and our young fans are not crying on the monday stevan today thank you thank you show me the police tell them we're doing your talk is not the mayor no more if you guys don't vote for j.t.
6:46 pm
i'm leaving a second i'm not. you're going to start his campaign right now my. obviously his brother's just died and he's very emotional that's what people did point out and says many were quick to criticize his behavior which obviously as you saw involved quite a bit of swearing and shouting in the mayor's face as well and the skids here says that he says while i understand this family are hurting but some respect goes both ways these people think it gives them carte blanche to disrespect everyone else just wrong and people should not should not allow it's anymore and most of the people did defend and salute him for speaking as a grieving brother and for the rest of the community and jerry keith is one of them he says seventy crocks passion for justice is heart wrenching and yet it's a beautiful sight to see i love i look forward to seeing what he does with his activism moving forward well the protesters did move forward and they marched on to

gold in one center stadium and brought fans from entering their rena they chanted say his name stefan crawford and twenty shots of those cops now if you happen to be in the u.s. and have been following this story then get in touch with us we're is love to hear from you these are details to get in touch with us sara thank you very much for that moving on and the international court at the hague the international court of justice has finished hearing a long running dispute between to south america and countries bolivia and landlocked nation wants chile to allow its sovereign access to the pacific ocean the two countries have not had full diplomatic relations for almost sixty years but libyan president evo morales has returned home after attending the proceedings in the hague well let's take a look at how it all started more than a century ago bolivia lost three hundred eighty kilometers of coastal territory to chile after the war of the pacific bolivia says it needs sovereign access to boost exports of natural gas and minerals but libya's lawyer argues that the country's

g.d.p. could be a fifth higher if it controlled access to the sea the disputed region contains mineral rich resources and some of chile's biggest. mind but media filed a lawsuit against the hague in twenty thirteen calling for sovereign access chile says that a nineteen zero four peace treaty settled the matter that's bringing a latin america it's a new c n u n now to a news group she joins us from china's capital santiago is here hearings ended a few hours ago at the hague with chile's president presenting its final defens why is today so reluctant to cede a piece of its more than four thousand kilometer long cost line to bolivia in exchange for better relations well and indeed this has been a bitter bitter dispute that has divided these two neighbors for more than a century there have been many attempts to reach some kind of a settlement but they've all fallen short of giving bolivia exactly what it wants which is a sovereign corridor from bolivia across chile to the pacific chile says it can't

divide its country in half by allowing part of its territory to be occupied sovereignly by another country but also chile argues that by doing this by not recognizing the one nine hundred four treaty that would jeopardize global peace by not recognizing borders that are established by peace treaties it says what would happen for example to the border of the agreement between mexico and the united states or the boundaries that was set after the second world war in europe by and so this goes back and forth and the big question now is what will happen in this lawsuit leaves president said just a few hours ago that no matter what happens chile will not cede a single centimeter to bolivia of sovereign territory so what's likely to be the outcome you think and is the verdict going to be binding. well the verdict is expected sometime before the end of this year but whatever happens. chile has much more to lose clearly than bolivia does the court at best is likely

to exhort chile i believe it to go back to the negotiating table and that for president ever what alice of bolivia will be considered at least as a political victory one that he very much needs right now because he is trying to run again for the presidency a controversial fourth consecutive term that he actually lost the right to do in a referendum which is not binding so the bolivians feel very very strongly about this almost anything the court says other than to throw out bolivia's demand will be considered again as a defeat for chile thank you for that lucy in human and latin america editor at lucy and human is where you can find her on twitter thank you so much for joining us on the newsgroup and more from lucy on the worsening relations between chile and bolivia at al jazeera dot com as she explained relations has been have been at their warse since eighteen eighty four. now if you're watching us on facebook live coming up next a story about ballet classes in rio's have and how it's inspiring kids to be

. my. answer is for speeders here peter we finally know the punishment australia's cheating cricket is likely to face that is indeed the case fair harsh or not harsh enough that's the debate today after australia's cheating cricketers were punished for their roles in ball tampering during a recent test in south africa for captain steve smith and vice captain david warner
6:53 pm
twelve month paying bans and two year captaincy bans for cameron bancroft the player who carried out the cheating by roughing up one side of the ball with sandpaper a nine month suspension and for coach terry lehman well nothing and investigation said he did not have any knowledge of the plan to cheat and so he will stay in his role as. the incident says cause a massive scandal in australia but it's not just there where people have been discussing it take a look at this you can see warning smith bancroft and cricket all be the scuffed and tweeted about across south africa north europe and the united states as well and lots of people tweeting in india as well don't forget it's their bed is the country where the lucrative indian premier league takes place and smith and warner will not be allowed to play in that competition in twenty eighteen either. and many former international cricketers have used social media to voice their opinions to former england captain michael vaughan and ladies' country to an ashes
6:54 pm
series win any of the defeat against australia tweeted many think the bans are harsh me included but the president has now been set by cricket australia they realise they have to send a message across the whole game with what these players will lose out on i am sure the shockwave will do its job former pakistan fast bowler shoaib akhtar who himself served a suspension for ball tampering during his playing days applauded steve smith for readily admitting his guilt but adds what a waste of a good captain and a great batsman lesson for all the cricketers to be on the right side of the game and controversial and outspoken former england batsman kevin pietersen is survey showing empathy for smith warner and band probably also convinced that they were not the only ones and that more is still to come we're joined now by e.s.p.n. cric info writer for those men who is in johannesburg ahead of the fourth test between australia and south africa starting on friday for the it's good to have you

with us on the news grid to what extent does the punishment fit the crime here. there are actually two sets of punishment and one from the i.c.c. in which they just follow the own code of conduct and that's all bent to mention climbed into the cabin only plan seventy five percent and facing the vendor told the second set of punishment handed down by cricket australia and that's that you know then that you're talking about me and david ball and what i meant by the i.c.c. it's all thanks to me i think it's quite a harsh ban for the actual act and for tempering but i think the commissioner was handed down both reputational damage that was called to quick of the scale and that's going that station with a lot of corporate kind of commitments to keep up a lot of sponsor interest and lot of influence over young people like they could get in this trailer and so they did that a suitable commissioning part and i want to elaborate a little bit on that because as you mentioned the sanctions handed out by cricket
6:56 pm
australia they are considerably different to those handed out by the i.c.c. what kind of message does that same boat. if you're going to sample the bowling on a scale in cricket are you going to be punished not much and then if you have any other kind of kick in really you know i'm just thinking that because only people have and they've been convicted and found guilty of both have been three times in the last five years on none of those occasions did cricket south africa take any other steps so the i.c.c. took to its steps and in fact it's not like it's not to defend its players in one instance they even appealed the guilty verdict so it's just a very different message that cricket australia send across i think there is a fair amount of hysteria there is some amount of her reaction but this is an organization that has got a commitment that is open a station that takes very seriously the way its players represent the game so that said if you come across in any way that makes you no longer a role model for young people then get them to act in so that's what they've done and what kind of future do you see. been crossed. yes yes crazy
6:57 pm
make him better and possibly play. well i think you did enough the game is clearly distraught and then he does seem like perhaps the guy was strong in a situation like what i read it's a lot more to look at the history of just. watching it. and know that you didn't challenge the very that set me to talk it's going around so i just think i just get uglier and uglier when i'm not sure i can see into straight in cause and then what you need is young any atheist genes can react if you take a look which people confident repudiation and up to score a lot of grounds to be considered a game or right for those let's leave it there for now thank you very much and i hope we can have you up on newsgroup again in the future that was e.s.p.n. cric info writer for those minda and as always you can let us know what you think about all those so you
