looking beautiful moment to blossom in tokyo and it really does look good from some of the images we've seen twenty three as a whole in tokyo on thursday we're going to see our patchy cloud across the korean peninsula but it should be dry very poor air quality in beijing at the moment that will probably continue to head on through into friday though it should stay dry up a stable bit cooler for tokyo highs than of seventeen. conflict standing something. united tyrian disaster displacing more than half a nice and. just zero world meets the children who have become victims of syria's civil war. i am a syrian child announces iraq.

this is al-jazeera. hello i'm barbara sarah this is the news hour live from london thank you for joining us coming up in the next sixty minutes a diplomatic triumph the china in pink trumps from becoming the first world leader to meet north korea's kim jong il in the. polls close in egypt's presidential election but it looks like turnout has been low despite the best efforts of the government is donald trump setting his sights on amazon rumors that he's doing just that send shares in the retail giant tumbling. and i'm peter with all the day's sport including australia's disgraced cricketers steve smith and

david warner are banned from playing for twelve months for their part in a ball tampering scandal. in the program. north korea's leader has pledged his commitment to denuclearization and says he will go ahead and meet u.s. officials that's according to china which has just hosted the reclusive leader after days of speculation beijing revealed that kim jong un was its guest from sunday to wednesday what it called an unofficial visit but kim jong un received almost all the trappings of a state visit including an honor guard and a banquet in the capital's great hall of the people from beijing our china correspondent adrian brown reports for xi jinping this was a diplomatic triumph he did not u.s. president donald trump now the first world leader to beat kim jong il. chinese
12:03 am
state controlled media waited until kim was back home before confirming what officials had tried so hard to deny just a day earlier. in the great hall of the people kim and his wife were welcomed like old friends appearance is important at times like this she opted for a business suit whereas kim stuck to the look favored by his father and grandfather the wives of both men were present during most of the photo opportunities. visits like this are all about symbolism for she it served as a reminder that china still holds sway over its neighbor and intends to be at the center of diplomatic efforts to achieve a nuclear free korean peninsula it's not clear what made him come to beijing or indeed what incentives he may have been offered to do so but china remains north korea's only real friend and ally so it's fair to assume the president xi jinping
12:04 am
might want to know what kim's negotiating strategy will be during his upcoming summit with president trump. kim's visit made it possible for china to know what north korea will be talking about to south korea and the united states in his discussions on the nuclearization china has also learned what north korea's demands will be which will help china. it's a visit that would have seemed unimaginable just a few months ago where north korea was ignoring chinese appeals for restraint at an exhibition showcasing some of china's technological achievements the message appeared to be we can help you with all of this if you behave. china's leaders of fond of metaphors that a lavish banquet she told his guest that in the beautiful season of spring everything comes to life kim replied i believe our meeting will yield abundant fruit that could mean making good on his commitment to give up nuclear weapons the
12:05 am
fruits of spring were apparent in the garden of the state guesthouse where friendship also seemed to blossom she accepted an invitation to visit north korea and told him he was welcome to visit china again the visitors left happy adrian brown al-jazeera beijing well the us president donald trump gave his reaction to the meeting on twitter he wrote received a message last night from ping of china that is meeting with kim jong il on went very well and that kim looks forward to his meeting with me in the meantime and unfortunately maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost let's get more on this now then joining us live from washington d.c. is patricia kamal who is a stanton nuclear security fellow at the council on foreign relations her current research portfolio includes projects on the north korean nuclear crisis and the
12:06 am
future of the korean peninsula madame thank you so much for joining us here on al-jazeera so this meeting between the chinese and north korean leaders take place takes place after what seven years that kim jong un has been in power so why now and what do you think each leader takes away from it. so i think the meeting between china and north korea demonstrates that despite the strained relations as you noted you know the two leaders haven't met for seven years despite these strained relations for many years that the two sides realize that they need each other to be partners that there is mutual gain to be had by corden ating their approaches to the united states so for shipping paying he most likely reached out to kim jong un to at a minimum get his read on the situation and to ensure that north korea would keep china's interests in mind as it starts to negotiate with the united states and kim
12:07 am
jong un probably accepted xi jinping offer to meet in order to enlist china's support for its negotiating position to and to get china's guarantee to stand against military strikes in case the talks don't go anywhere i guess we have seen from the north koreans more diplomacy than we have seen in the past in the past few months but ultimately what incentive do you think there will be for kim jong un to actually denuclearize. so i think most experts agree that kim jong un doesn't intend to denuclearize at least at the pace that the united states wants it's to north korea has come to the negotiating table because the maximum pressure campaign has been or they've realized that the maximum pressure campaign is unsustainable that it's squeezing the regime and that it needs to find a way out so they will most likely be seeking concessions seeking some sort of
12:08 am
sanctions relief in return for minimal concessions on their part so i mean there does seem to be even if it's superficial but some kind of optimism about these talks looking ahead with soul and washington as well but ultimately what do you think all of this is going to lead to or is it just the case of north korea as you mentioned kind of pulling back and realizing that the path that that it was on wasn't sustainable in the long term. so i think we can hope that it will open some doors but again i think where we have very different expectations on all sides and i'm afraid that it could lead to disappointment in talks when trump and kim jong un meet in may like i said the united states wants north korea to quickly denuclearize it the trump administration has said that it cannot tolerate north korea gaining the capability to strike the u.s. with a nuclear weapon whereas when north korea talks about denuclearizing we don't know
12:09 am
what timeline it has in mind most likely its thinking in terms of you know years or decades and so i think there are very different expectations on both sides so we're so you know i i don't i'm not too off to mystic that we're going to solve this problem with just one summit coming up in may patricia kim stanton nuclear security fellow at the council foreign relations madam think you. polls have now closed in egypt's presidential election ending three days of voting with no real challenger president of the fact that sisi is set to win a landslide victory but low voter turnout has been a problem despite the best efforts from the authorities who have been trying to lure people into polling booths with the promise of many. reports yet natalie's he'd go vote and you will immediately be paid the equivalent
12:10 am
of three dollars an ounce because of for bribes to egyptians to cast their ballots as government fears of a low turnout grow state media police and officials are pushing to try and prevent embarrassment. trucks distributed sugar rice and cooking oil in poor areas businessman offered people free rides to go to polling stations. the government's using the carrot as well as the stick to boost turnout it just choose to stay way risk being fined. for whoever abstains from casting his vote with no justifiable reason faces a fine of twenty eight dollars it's our duty to ensure the law is implemented we are a country that respects the law president our bill for to has sisi has bit for reelection
12:11 am
is almost unchallenged fear is a low turnout will be widely seen as a sign of growing discontent among the people senior army officers visited polling stations across the country they insist the election went smooth and the turnout is higher than reported by the media. but even if the turnout is low c.c. is expected to trounce his opponent. the little known politician who announced his bit of a last minute sissy's sat for an easy win but is likely to face many challenges during his second term critics dismiss claims by c.c. supporters who say he's the right man for egypt and he's helped improve the economy some analysts say the vast majority of egyptians were solved the biggest challenge
12:12 am
for him right now i think is the economy if you look at some of the macro level indicators like g.d.p. and foreign reserves things seem to have improved for for egypt over the past two years particularly since they enacted tough economic reforms encouraged by the i.m.f. but on the micro level life for the average egyptian has actually gotten a lot more difficult because inflation has increased dramatically presidencies he said repeatedly that if we elected it's going to be his final four years. but he's already pushing for constitutional changes to pave the way for the general turned politician to run for a third term. well little earlier i spoke to our senior political analyst madeleine he told me the satisfaction is high in egypt for a number of reasons but mainly due to the strong political repression that is great
12:13 am
that the selection of europe has been silent in fact has been a piecing the egyptian general and the united states not only has been appeasing has been praising the. president in fact the former sec of state tell us and said there is no gap between the egyptian regime of the united states vice-president pend said. president sisi is a friend of the united states and of course person from said he's a close friend of ours i guess especially the european countries would look at egypt and say well o.c.c. is the devil that we know and the last thing we need is an egypt that is like libya or iraq or syria we need stability and we are willing to sacrifice the democratic principle but how stable is egypt right now and you know this compromise it's be made by the west i mean ultimately is it going to be effective that's a very important question and i think that's the dilemma facing most of western leaders. there's this idea this notion of the likes of sisi even the likes of
12:14 am
assad and the likes of publicness old man and others but they'll get on ters of security and stability in the region and partners in the fight against terrorism than the alternative but the fact of the matter is the hit the ships authoritarian regimes and repression in the arab world is that the root cause of terrorism instability and violence in the middle east so having taking the shortcut of supporting more repressive regimes will not allow for stability in fact i would argue not only it was going to create more chaos next time around in egypt and the likes it's going to create even worse blowback to those who supported repressive regimes in the arab world and i think the egyptian streets we're going forward it's i think it's going to show signs of dissatisfaction and we've been seeing that since two thousand and thirteen when sisi basically you know ran a coup to tell in the country and with each and every passing month we're seeing
12:15 am
more and more dissatisfaction the political repression is high and deep and why. the economic austerity measures are leading to more and more dissatisfaction among the egyptians and certainly radicalism extremism and the likes of isis in sinai is all or causes of insta pics. well voting is now over in egypt but our social media producer and pal has more now about what's been trending online on the final day of voting the turnout in this election is being closely watched for an indication of egyptians trust in the president local media dominated by pro-government voices have portrayed voting as an obligation and the only way to prevent foreign forces from sowing instability regardless of the choice of candidates many egyptians voted to carry out a basic civic duty. we have to cast your ballot we have to express our opinion and make a difference we've seen our neighbors suffering instability and turmoil but we have

stability thank god the most important thing forty seven point five percent of eligible voters participated four years ago handing sisi his first election victory with nearly ninety seven percent of the vote if you were voters participated in the last election in twenty fourteen compared to two thousand and twelve when mohamed morsi became egypt's first democratically elected president egypt's election authorities said sisi received ten million more votes in twenty fourteen then morsi did in two thousand and twelve so forty seven point five percent in two thousand and fourteen fifty two percent in two thousand and twelve but check out this number from two thousand and five only twenty three percent of eligible voters cast ballots in that race when former president mubarak faced a challenger from the gods party that's the same party as cc's only challenger. now pop culture has played a role in getting people to vote this week and many of the prominent pro-government hashtags for the election featured videos of people dancing outside polling stations playing songs by popular artists encouraging people to participate this

song. or good omen was released for the twenty fourteen election but it continues to be played outside many polling stations this week it's a massive hit that's racked up more than two hundred and eighty six million views on you tube. and it appears that american election observers became hooked by the catchy tunes as well several videos of u.s. officials dancing outside polling stations have gone viral on egyptian social media that's something that's hurt some online observers a cairo based writer and filmmaker here calling it a celebration of the unopposed triumph of a military dictator and while the u.s. embassy in cairo says that as americans they are very impressed by the enthusiasm and patriotism of egyptian voters you have commentators such as while iskandar who say that western complicity and partnership in the crimes against the egyptian people are the most important story about the elections. there now much more to come on the news hour including courtroom drama. faceoff in

president wants to change amazon's tax treatment let's go to my cabin now who is following developments in washington d.c. for us so tell us a little bit more about what happened on wall street. well it was a disaster for those investing in amazon at the close of the day the value of amazon shares had dropped by nearly five percent of that amounts to sun thirty three billion dollars lost and all of this because of the reported musing of a president in which he was quoted in a news report as saying that he is looking for ways in which to take action against amazon now no coincidence perhaps as well but amazon has been the subject of tweets by the president before he's accused in the past of costing u.s. jobs he's also twin demos on with the washington post now these are both earned by jeff b.'s us so there could be a personal element to these reported public statements that it would appear by

president trump so mike i guess you sort of explain one of the reasons why the president could be targeting amazon but publicly what what could be his other reason. well the report is goes into quite some detail about what has been happening in the white house and the way in which the president has been speaking aloud to two business associates and indeed two friends now the report goes on to say that his friends have told him that they are suffering because of amazon's action that also the shopping malls the bricks and mortar type retail facilities are also suffering because of amadan also the report states that president trump and he has stated this publicly and on the record in the past contends that the amazon is benefiting from the u.s. postal service claiming for example that the postal service has to work on sundays

because of amazon but all of this is certainly the dumain of the financial trade commission or indeed the justice department should any legislation be considered against any specific company or any specific group of companies or type of companies for the record though the white house press spokesman says that there is no policy in place for any specific company at present she's apparently attempting to walk back these reports but for many amazon. holders of amazon stock this is certainly a rather hollow assurance given the fact of how much money they've lost in the course of the day and i can i with the latest from washington d.c. thank you. u.k. police investigating a nerve agent attack on a former russian spy and his daughter say the highest concentration of the poison was found on the front door of their family home from a russian double agent so i guess creep arlen is the uni every main in

anti-government protests he opiah began sliding into crisis in late two thousand and fifteen when protests began among the a moros and the m.r.o. who feel they are marginalized by the government both say the minority tea gray ethnic group has too much influence in the country the protests led to a heavy crackdown hundreds of people were killed and tens of thousands were arrested a ten month state of emergency was imposed in october two thousand and sixteen the prime minister haile mariam this alina struggled to contain the unrest and then a shock move announced his resignation last month he said that that was to make way for reforms let's go live to washington d.c. now where we can speak to mohammed adamle he's the founder and editor of oprah had dot com a news website about a romeo and ethiopia so thank you so much for joining us here on al-jazeera servia made to the new leader of ethiopia do you think he is the right man for the job.
12:36 am
i think given the alternatives that the people of ethiopia were given he is certainly the one that is more qualified one. semblance of legitimacy a popular support of some sort in clearly a landslide victory within the. ruling coalition that elected for him so i think he is better positioned to be the prime minister but again i think a lot of it will depend on what he does in how he lay the ground from here on forward and what do you think his main challenges will be because obviously you see opi is now coming well i mean certainly perhaps coming out of a period of instability so do you think that he will be able to calm the waters at least for a while. i think in the short term given that he has
12:37 am
a popular support in orania the epicenter of the government protest over the last four years in the short term he has he has an opportunity to stabilize the situation he also has cross-cutting support across the region the second largest in the country in the says i think he is qualified but again it comes down to a question of whether or not this tabulation in the security in the military interest is who want to maintain the status quo or will give him the full powers of the office of the prime minister to implement his own agenda to make changes to the ruling is tractor of the party putting a new cabinet in really. inviting the opposition in charge a better way forward for the country so i think he will face challenges this deeply into an entrenched interest in the party has been in power since one thousand nine hundred one he is a relatively an outsider in
12:38 am
a sense that he's his message is one of reform and one that is not highly popular with the powerful interests in the ruling coalition so he faces challenges but i think there is a lot of hope here just on the virtue of the fact that he is the first or a more prime minister there is so much goodwill. i mean obviously the process as you mentioned started there with india roma community and mainly they started about land rights and then branched out into things for example like greater political representation i mean certainly having a lower all moral. leader is shoojit the symbolic but do you think that it will go past that i mean you hinted that there were obviously that you weren't sure that effectively that he was going to be allowed to make the changes that the people protesting had wanted to be named. this is indeed a historic opportunity for the incoming prime minister not only is he the first
12:39 am
prime minister from this ruling party but in ethiopia as a long history he is the only self identifying oromo to be the head of the state so he's hugely symbolic but ultimately i think he he comes from rome which fills the highest number of members of parliament of the national parliament he now has the officer of the prime minister so i think it's a question of using that advantage in the popular support from the streets to implement to make changes right away in he can start doing that next week or in the coming days when he takes over by repealing the state of emergency by announcing the reforms legal and political reforms that could really inspire confidence in the public because the people are giving him the benefit of the doubt but they don't really trust the party the party has made so many promises in broke
12:40 am
a lot of those promises over the last quarter of a century so i think he has a unique historic opportunity with a law him to do this would he be bold enough to take on this interest would he be able to take the reforms that he put in place in or romania to the national office i think those are the questions that needs to be answered he can answer that by laying out a clear vision in his acceptance speech or will be following this story closely enough serious will be very interesting to see how his first weeks and months as leader at pan out for the moment for him made it they will founder and editor of a pride dot com search thank you for sharing your views. now the french policeman killed in last friday's attack in southern france has been honored in a ceremony led by president the man who and on it have been colonel bill thomas swapped places with a hostage during a supermodel supermarket attack entire saving her life but losing his own has been
