into the killing of sixteen pilots a palestinians during landay protests on the gaza border i've been to a lieberman says the troops acted appropriately firing only at palestinian protesters who posed a threat a twelve year old boy hit by israeli gunfire says he was about thirty meters away from the border and thought he would be safe as long as he didn't touch the barrier or throw stones. i was just standing there when i felt so many more legs and it pushed me to the ground for the hospitals in gaza are struggling to cope with the influx of palestinian casualties nearly fifteen hundred people have reportedly been injured in the violence doctors say they're running out of medicine and supplies to treat patients many of whom were injured by live ammunition. away. from day one of the protests the strategic stock at the hospitals especially sheaffer hospital have been running out of because of that we're calling on donors to supply hospitals with medicine and other medical supplies for the sensitive

departments like emergency operation rooms and the intensive care in order to be able to continue serving these injured people. al-jazeera is how the are done hamid is in gaza she has been talking to injured people just for those here in gaza overwhelmed health officials say that eight hundred and five people were injured by live ammunition now the doctors i spoke to say that it seems that the israeli soldiers have used high caliber bullets they deduct that from the extent of the wounds that they have seen on many of the patients now speaking to. do wounded some of them will tell you that they never expected such a response from the israeli soldiers i spoke to some that said that they actually did to her some stones but they were quite far away from the fence at least about one hundred meters away one girl said that she was carrying her flag she even went
12:04 am
to the extent of taking off a backpack for the soldiers not just think that she was carrying something suspicious and she stood there and that's when she got shot actually her blood was caught on video now when you ask people are you going to go back to defense are you going to continue that six week long sit in which is dubbed as a long. the march of return and well everybody seems to say yes they will they say that they have no other means at this point to negotiate for themselves that they have been under siege now for more than a decade that nothing is getting better and it is actually no hope for them when they look to the future so they say that they will continue doing that research and we also heard from the had a mass is my new year the leaders said that friday was the first step that actually the palestinians have showed restraint last friday but they don't know what will
12:05 am
happen next that was probably in retaliation to the statement issued by the israeli army just a day before in which the army also said that it had showed restraint and if this situation and that tension continues of the border it will actually also retaliate with force. well we've got correspondents standing by for us in both ramallah and jerusalem let's go first to ramallah where mommy is that most we are obviously in a different place in the west bank but i'm guessing there is quite a sense of solidarity with the people of gaza and with what's been happening on the border. now there certainly is sue one perfect example of that interfaith the marge that we attended just a few hours ago these were christians and muslims coming together tonight to show their solidarity with what happened in gaza to commemorate the victims those who
12:06 am
died just two days ago now they gathered at a church the council of churches had decreed that today in lieu of festivities that would normally be happening for easter and for palm sunday that they were going to instead have this very peaceful and brief gathering this march through the streets of downtown as i mentioned this was not a long march it was a short one we spoke to some of the participants there were palestinian officials who were very grateful to the christian leaders saying this really showed that they cared for their muslim brother and we also spoke to a priest who said that beyond just trying to show solidarity for what happened in gaza they also wanted to demand that the international community do more to protect promised any and soon the paint has been facing up that much people look very thoughtful but it can get tense on the streets way you why is there any sense that it could boil over. look today
12:07 am
where we are the mood has been somber it has been mournful it has been a slow day but there is growing concern about what might happen tomorrow there were no huge demonstrations today out of respect for the christian holidays but there have been factions who have been speaking amongst themselves they are going to be meeting tomorrow palestinian political factions calling for more action calling for escalation and calling for demonstrations in the streets and that's where there is a worry what will happen next although those organizing these events insist they will be peaceful and ask those who are gathered to make sure that remains peaceful that's not the first time we've heard that there's been violence at demonstrations like this in the past and there is some concern here tonight that perhaps tomorrow and in the days ahead there could be clashes that could happen in these demonstrations as well so. let's go across to western and stephanie dacca stuff
12:08 am
one of the israelis now saying in the face of what seems to be quite a growing international criticism well particular we've been hearing from these really defense minister avigdor lieberman his saying that the soldiers acted exactly how they should have done and in his opinion deserved imagine we've also had praise from the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu so everyone standing very solidly behind the army that is not surprising sue it's not the first time the army's accused of using excessive force and it's also not going to be the last time that they're saying is that this was a breach of security that it wasn't a main protest that basically it was a mass attempt to breach the border wall and this is why they say they opened fire and they said they opened fire not against peaceful protesters but only against those who tried to breach the wall. steffen the protest continues the big gazans are committed to israel still warning that it could retaliate in
12:09 am
a similar fashion. it is and it's warning that it will retaliate in a stronger fashion and i think when we look at the numbers of what happened on friday you heard from just a little earlier you're talking about over eight hundred now injured by live fire that's a massive amount of bullets that have been dispensed into a crowd and what we are seeing this is unprecedented soo tens of thousands around thirty thousand people coming out to protest israel says that how mass and other organizations like what it deems terrorist organizations are infiltrating these protesters but certainly you know listening to people in gaza they seem to say that this is a kind of momentum that it's the first time that the world is woken up to them in a long time i think certainly if you look at the media reports television news print that don't usually pay gaza any attention have woken up to it so i think
12:10 am
there will be a mention that continues and i think it will be a challenge for israel particular when it's already under such scrutiny and how it's going to handle this having tens of thousands of unarmed protesters close to the gaza border fence protesting what is a never ending seeming occupation how they retaliate to that will be something we'll have to keep a watch on good to talk to if any deck of their life is in west jerusalem. still to come only al-jazeera news hour donald trump says the deal is off on young immigrants in the u.s. known as the dream of costa rica votes in an election that's being dominated by the issue of gay rights and in sports the church of the longest gets thrown into chaos in the sun i will tell you what happened later in the program. at least four civilians have died in massive anti india protests which broke out in
12:11 am
the southern villages of indian administered kashmir but then mr asians kicked off after indian forces launched a counterinsurgency operation overnight killing at least thirteen rebels three soldiers also died in the gun battle many kashmiris say they openly support anti india rambles of several protesters tried to march to the gun battle sites to help the trapped fighters escape residents then began throwing rocks at indian forces who responded with live ammunition shotgun pellets tear gas. actually in an odd day care act here tonight they cordoned off the villages there is no count of the injured people they martyred australians. they think of the kashmir struggle for freedom or end by such means but god willing the freedom movement will rise like the sun this struggle belongs to our youngsters. and at least ten people have died after a hotel collapse in the indian city of in-door local officials say up to five

people may still be trapped under the rubble according to indian media the four story building came down after it was round by a vehicle the government has ordered an investigation. north korean leader kim jong un and his wife resoled jew have joined hundreds of people who watched south korea's k. pop stars perform in pyongyang for the first time in over a decade the concept coincides with the u.s. and south korea launching joint military drills on sunday which have been scaled down compared to previous years due to shop a small. this was a cultural charm offensive that would be set to music after months of escalating military tensions the north korean leader kim jong un seemed determined to enjoy himself as he arrived for the first concert in pyongyang by a team of south korean entertainers.

from the north korean audience starved of a little light musical entertainment were loving it. cool the singers and dancers weren't the troll card tonight. i. talk kwon do maybe an acquired taste in parts of the world. but enthusiasm for this martial arts display. unites north and south thank. you go ahead and they're beginning our first performances in pyongyang today and i find it very meaningful to the south and not to take window culture said the origin but the process is that different i am proud and happy that we got it as a plea to the north korean people taekwondo or the. north korean officials passing on this thanks to the visitors from the south a little evening distraction before the serious stuff

a meeting by the two leaders later this month and face to face with president trump judging from a thank it was the sight of a limp athletes from north and south korea marching under a unified flag at the opening of the games marked a significant thaw in relations and that momentum appears to be continuing but all that didn't stop the u.s. and south korea kicking off a so-called low key joint military drill on sunday in last a month that featured the deployment of fewer strategic weapons peeta shop al-jazeera. gunshots and explosions have been heard in the northeastern nigeria and city of man dugar a security forces are reportedly battling a large number of fighters a suspected to be members of the armed group. acknowledges joins us now live from freetown in sierra leone what can you tell us about this attack. well basically according to our sources in many degree governments suspected to be
12:15 am
members of book or her arms me under the cover of darkness this evening and tried to infiltrate the northeastern city of my degree this their eyes on the city since this insurgency was launched nearly a decade ago targeted to villagers jimminy and. on the outskirts of my degree they were reported casualties and several people have been one day the army so far as was able to repel the attackers and our sources are telling us that at least ten bombs went off and there was some gunfire it wasn't clear whether it was a military responding to the fighters or there were gunmen among them also try to take control of the two villages meanwhile this is not the first time the red the fighters have been i've been targeting maybe we are areas that only made agree to
12:16 am
do soko they have launched the suicide missions at least three suicide missions in my degree out on the border got a huge area of borno state but they were able to. sort of kill as many people as they wanted only one person died and the four suicide bombers so this evening's attack is one of the largest in months with the fighters ever more inched on the northeastern city and it's not clear whether it's the shake off auction of what i am or the and but now we fraction of book on which is of course allied to the islamic state or in west africa what's your sense of the strength of gawker at the moment we've heard the nigerian government say that they've been technically defeated and now we have this attack how much of a full fall that. well basically since the nigerian government made the declaration a lot of my general was questioning the russian army behind it. recently we've seen
12:17 am
and heard that you know if you're in central government offering amnesty to boko haram fighters who have surrendered or who will just want to surrender and basically nigerians are asking if these fighters have been technically defeated why are you going down the street to people who have already been defeated and then of course the abduction of the build up to goes at this moment it's another pointer to the strength and resilience of boko haram we have several factions of this group notably vishakha faction and there but now we function and each and every one of the beast trying to prove that this still relevant in the scheme of things we're seeing them knowing suicide missions the military has been able to change them to out of areas they have previously occupied but they still remain a potent force attacking isolated and vulnerable villages in northeast trying to. manage risk even has some insight into that breaking news coming out of the. u.s.

president on charm pass threaten to pull out of the nafta free trade agreement with mexico if it doesn't do more to stop people crossing the border trump was thought to be referring to people from central america making their way to the u.s. through mexico. coming because one. would. like. to take a mexico it's got. water. right. well there was a swift response to trounce comments from mexico the man who is currently the favorite to win the presidential election in july and dress money well lopez obrador said he would demand respect for his country no mobile service.
12:19 am
we're not going to rule out the possibility of convincing donald trump that his foreign policy is wrong and in particular his contemptuous attitude towards the mexicans. we're going to be very respectful towards the government of the united states but we're also going to demand respect for mexicans neither mexico nor its people will be a pin yacht's of any foreign government. while for more on this let's go straight to diane estabrook in washington d.c. sent out what is probably to donald trump getting to talk about immigration today. well it everybody's best guess at this point is he was referring you mentioned earlier this story about these thousands of one thousand migrants from central america most of whom were from honduras that were traveling through mexico hoping to seek asylum in the u.s. anybody's best guess is that he was maybe watching fox this morning and there were commentators on fox early this morning that were talking about this report that
12:20 am
appeared last week in buzz feed talking about these migrants that were heading through mexico and reported that was following them said that they weren't being stopped so that may have been what prompted this twitter rant that the president went on early this morning and then the comments that he made later to reporters as he was heading into church what's been the response in washington where you are to his comments well not a lot of response so far because congress has been out this week because of the easter holiday but one response from governor john k six who is the governor of ohio and who ran against president trump for the republican nomination he tweeted a truly iter preserves and offers hope doesn't take hope from innocent children who call america home remember today is easter sunday so it will be interesting to see if we hear anything from other republicans and democrats about this later this week
12:21 am
if the president even responds or talks about it this week many thanks then after giving it the life response to the streets. the syrian rebel group in charge of the last opposition stronghold in eastern guta is again denying reports it's a great to evacuate gyre islam says the reports by the syrian government and lebanese armed group hezbollah are false and it's not allowing its members to the duma for rebel held areas in the north over one hundred thousand civilians are said to be trapped in the town which suffered major damage during the government assault . and separately fighters from the file. rebel group have left to remember these pictures from syrian state television said to show the fighters and their families on government buses headed for the province pope francis has used his easter message to call for peace around the world about eighty

thousand people were in some peter's square to hear his address in an apparent reference to the recent violence in girls so he called for reconciliation in the holy land and also called for action to bring the war in syria to an end you know you don't mind them or fruity deep today we implore the fruits of police upon the entire world beginning with the beloved and long suffering led to syria these people are worn down by an apparently endless fuel. the light of the risen christ illuminates the consciences of all political and military leaders so that a swift may be brought to the carnage humanitarian law may be respected and provisions be made to be. needed by brothers and sisters also allowing the return of the displaced. five saudis soldiers have been killed in the city of just down near the border with yemen saudi state media did not specify what caused the deaths
12:23 am
yemen's heathy rebels have released a video showing an attack on a military vehicle in the same area. people in costa rica are electing a new president in a vote that's been defined by the fight for gay rights the ruling party's candidate carlos alvira saga is up against british c.e.o. of a rod most of us who's a conservative evangelical singer when us is opposed to same sex marriage a position that's apparently boosted his popularity into american court of human rights ruled in january that member states must allow same sex couples to marry grocery because government has said it would abide by the ruling as has threatened to remove the country from the court's jurisdiction well let's cross to san jose and speak to katherine stanley obama the editor of the costa rican based teco times france very much for joining us on al-jazeera because of these very different stands on the question of same sex marriage has this election effectively turned
12:24 am
into a kind of referendum on this question. in a way it has both of the candidates who are in the two man right up today were in the middle to the back of the pack in the thirteen candidates field as recently as the beginning of january and then when the inter-american court of human rights released its ruling about marriage equality both of them moved forward in the polls to be sure but because of its opposition to the ruling incredulous that out because it is enthusiasm for the ruling so gay marriage all of a sudden became a huge issue which was remarkable given that when questions were asked in polls to name their biggest concerns marriage equality was not among them this country is facing a lot of other challenges so in a way it has been a referendum on that issue at the same time the way the campaign has played out it's also tapped into deeper socio economic issues and inequality
12:25 am
a lot of people are looking at somebody say well but as a candidate who might be able to bring their help in communities that have been neglected by traditional parties there is this question of the legality of i know for the initially said that he would pull them out of this binding court that basically said you must sign up to this but i have pulled back from that a little now but if he decided he didn't want to sign up to same sex marriage if he wins one of the options of a perm. well it'll it'll be interesting basically what happened is immediately after the separate fourth first rather vote when it became clear he would face carlos up but i want a second round he was under a lot of pressure to change its position including from leaders of traditional parties whom he needed to court to build unity for the second round and they said look this really is not viable to a group. from this court that's based in san jose it was promoted by close to
12:26 am
reconsider early so he will that back and said ok that's not going to be necessary we're going to deal with it through diplomatic means. so sorry to interrupt you talk just a little bit earlier on about the fact that there were other challenges for whoever wins i was reading that the country's murder rate is the highest ever it's be in last year one of they saying about that particular area while it's going to be a huge huge challenge for whoever whoever takes the reins as well as the economic challenges constrict its deficit is enormous that's really going to be one of the top issues facing place in the president so it's it's been a bit of a surprise that social issue that marriage equality has taken over so much of the debate many thanks great to talk to catherine stein the speaking to us from san jose thanks a pleasure. still to come on the al-jazeera news hour botswana's new president is
12:27 am
sworn in with a pledge to win the country of its dependence on diamonds class. i'm gonna hold this is russia's radioactive river touch up one of the world's most polluted water words. on top to make history against chelsea and salah has all the details in sport. and i there the rain is still pouring across many parts of europe at the moment the satellite picture is showing this huge expanse of cloud that falls bringing us all very wet weather we're also seeing some hail out of this and lots of thunder and lightning to the whole system is working its way up towards the northeast and it's still developing as it does so so we're seeing strong the winds on monday and more
12:28 am
intense outbreaks of rain and snow a lot of that will be snow particularly when it's all the nature behind it the something of a break so berlin looks nice at seven degrees vienna about fourteen but in the west there's another weather system that's piling its way in and that will bring us some very heavy downpours over parts of britain and ireland as we head through monday i think actually pushes its way northward across parts of scandinavia there for choose day behind it still very unsettled with some rather strong winds so all very messy across many parts of europe there for choose day for the other side of the mediterranean lots of cloud have another great deal of wet weather one weather system that's over parts of china zero stretching across parts of libya and there's a break before the next weather system is working its way in from spain and portugal that edges its way eastwards and the cloud does thicken up and off to give us a bit of rain on choose day particularly around the coast of algeria i think that's where we're going to see some of the worst outbreaks of rain.

welcome back a reminder of the top stories here an al-jazeera hospitals in gaza are struggling to cope with an influx of palestinians injured by israeli gunfire in protest along the border israel's defense minister has rejected calls for an investigation into the killing of sixteen palestinians during the demonstrations at least four civilians have died during anti india protests in indian administered kashmir after government forces launched a deadly operation against separatist rebels the north korean leader kim jong un and his wife we soldiers joined hundreds of people watching south korea's k.

pop stars perform in pyongyang. let's get more on our top story the gaza shootings. is the executive director of the u.s. campaign for palestinian rights and he joins me now live via skype from alexandria virginia in the u.s. thanks very much for coming on to al-jazeera first i just want to talk put she you the thoughts of justification the israeli defense forces are saying that led to them using such excessive force they are saying things like there are a lot of hamas fighters that they were threatening the border and that they were also using weapons what is your sense of what you've seen and heard as to what was going on in that particular border area. well thank you sue it's good to be with you look it's quite simple there is no justification for the use of lethal force against anyone who is not presenting and image in an imminent threat to my
12:32 am
perceived the of the israeli soldiers in this case but what we know is that well ahead of the events israeli soldiers in fact about one hundred snipers as the israeli media has reported were sent out outside of gaza and given orders to fire upon anyone who even came close to the demarcation so the israeli sources were actually given marching orders to use lethal force against people who did not pose a threat and i think what we have seen in the in the days an hour since this march began is plenty of video evidence that shows many on armed individuals being shot by snipers from hundreds of meters away who in many individuals who were
12:33 am
killed and hundreds of people who are hit by live fire were injured as well so you know there really is no justification for this and you know i understand that the israelis are trying to smear individual protesters after the fact but unfortunately that's that's just not how international law works and i think we saw a condemnations of this from the international community precisely because of that and indeed that is one of the things i wanted to say that they israelis on are saying that obviously the protests are going to carry on that they will carry on using some of the fullest or indeed it even more severe force where no herring for calls for an independent inquiry that's unlikely to happen so what can you now do to build on this condemnation and to try and stop this kind of violence and these killings happening again. well fortunately the united states
12:34 am
has used its position of influence to prevent any movement at the united nations as we saw it just the other day when they prevented a united nations security council statement from moving forward in condemnation of these events however there has been condemnation internationally from another number of other players but i think also importantly is that what we saw the ground the other day in the gaza strip was a massive mobilization of people very well organized and organized under a single flag the palestinian flag and i think this represents for palestinians a way forward that this might just be the beginning and i think that's a prospect that scares the israelis very much as one of the reasons why they attempted to wash it with such overwhelming lethal force from the outset because
12:35 am
they simply do not know how to respond to massive nonviolent popular mobilization and you know the palestinian organizers who are behind this is that if this is the beginning of things to come it could provide a great deal of leverage for them moving forward really hitting a achilles heel for an israeli state that is very much able i am. sorry to cut you off we are now time youssef many thanks very much for joining us thank you but for honesty president has found to tackle you fun employment pictures his country's dependence on the diamond industry and what same i.c.c. with sworn in on sunday am will rule the country until elections next year former president income a step down on saturday off to completing the maximum term of ten years in office catherine saw a point somehow but over night. president zuma sissy inspects the troops of to
